Restoring iTunes onto new hard drive

My HP PC is most likely going to have a new hard drive.
I have all 6000 songs backed up on not one, but two Seagate drives. Each have the entire library. Better safe than sorry.
Question:
When I put iTunes on the new PC Hard drive-----
*if I just have the iPod in the cradle and hit synch, will all the songs on the iPod transfer back over to where they need to be on the new PC hard drive?
*Or...I just copy the music folder from my Seagate and paste it to where it needs to be for iTunes to read it.
(If I do that, will iTunes then try and put all that music onto the iPod (where it already exists?)

you could 'authorize' the computer to play purchased music
or
you could get the preference file for itunes and copy it onto the new HD

Pete.

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

  • Backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

Help! My husband backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone from my library! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

    Hello Nataroo007,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
    1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
    3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

  • Restoring itunes from all hard drive

I apologise if this has been asked before of is somewere else, but i couldnt find it.
I basicaly got a new computer and have my old hard drive now plugged into the new one so cant run the old itunes (so i cant consolodate or backup or anything like that)
But i want to restore itunes onto my new computer so that i have all my playlists and song names. This is mainly because i have about 30+ playlists, and a lot of the things i had to rename because they wernt named properly (didnt have artists or standard names)
I have access to the old itunes folder, so can copy or import settings and music.
I have looked for hours to try and find out how to do this, but cnt seem to find anything. I am just copying the 'My Music folder' but it obviously says 'this file cannot be found' wen i try yo play it.
    Help pls!
    thanx, Ghost

that doesnt work, cause the old one was on XP, and this is on windows 7
    Doesn't matter.
If you copy the entire iTunes folder, it should work fine. You won't need to change any settings.
    Try this.
1- Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
2- Select *Choose library* and select the /iTunes/ folder on the XP drive (/username/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/).
3- Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
4 - Make sure the iTunes media folder location is set to /username/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music (or iTunes Media).
5- Go to iTunes menu File > Library > Organize library and tick Consolidate.
This will ensure everything in iTunes is in /username/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ folder.
At this point, you can leave it like this and use it as is. iTunes will use this location for everything from now on.
If you wish to move iTunes to the new drive, quit iTunes and copy /username/My Documents/My Music/iTunes/ folder on the XP drive to /username/My Music/ on the C: drive.
Now hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select /username/My Music/iTunes folder on the C: drive.
That is all you need to do.

  • SYNCING IPHONE AND ITUNES WITH NEW HARD DRIVE

My hard drive crashed on my mac book pro and I had to replace it with a new one. I'm trying to get new music onto my iphone that I purchased thru Itunes, but it is saying that only one computer can be used. This is the only computer that I used for the library, but now there is a new hard drive in it. Obviously I do not want to lose the music on my iphone and I'm curious how or if I can get around the message saying that if I want to sync to a new computer that it will erase the prior library. Please advice because I would like to update my iphone as soon as possible.

Connect the iPhone and choose Transfer Purchases from the dialog box which appears or the File menu in iTunes. Do NOT sync the iPhone until you've completed this task.

  • Can you transfer itunes to new hard drive????

Had 4th Generation ipod stolen and replaced with 5th generation 60gb ipod, laptop is only 30gb, which was fine with old ipod. Have recently bought a seperate hard drive 250gb. Is there a way to safetly transfer all my itunes songs, photo's, videos, etc onto my new hard drive to release some space from my laptop which is starting to work very slowly, took over 4 hours to install latest version of itunes

You could follow Apple's step-by-step directions on how to do this by searching on "Move iTunes library" or "move iTunes folder" in the Apple.com support search. They tell you how to do this, error-free if you follow their instructions to the letter.
Searching Apple.com or here prior to posting will get you the answer you need without the wait.
Please don't follow Slinger's advice, do it once the right way. He misread that you want to move to a new external HDD and thinks you are replacing your internal HDD. The part about copying then to a DVD or (yet another) hard drive so you can then copy them to the proper hard drive (vs. just connecting that new hard drive to the computer with all the files on it to begin with) made no sense as a result. Anyhoo... there is a way to do it, so good luck.
Here's the link, since I am now worried you may not get all of it right...

  • Restoring itunes from external hard drive

-I used WD backup program to store itunes on external hard drive
-hard drive on mac pro crashed, replaced hard drive
-trying to restore itunes songsa from external drive and when I copied songs from external hard drive to new internal hard drive which has itunes program, only song titles appear and track number for songs I ripped from CDs. All info is present for songs I purchased from itunes (why is there a difference in the way these two are restored???)
-Can I restore itunes from external drive so that artist and album are associated with each song title I ripped from CDs?
    Much appreciate all assistance. Thanks.

I know MP3 and AAC save tag data, and I believe AIFF does as well (if you want to keep them in full-quality but space-greedy format). I don't think WAV supports tagging which is why they were lost. Read:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9558241&#9558241
This time make sure you have a complete backup of your itunes folder (which, in fact you may still have). That way you can recover your complete library and everything intact (as long as you keep your backups up to date).

  • Update iTunes on new Hard Drive

I just got a new Hard Drive, and when trying to access my Itunes library dragged over from my old Hard Drive - it gives me an error message that Quicktime is needed. I have Quicktime - but seems to be an older version - 7.5.1 - when trying to install 7.5.5 it tells me it cannot be done since I have a newer version than that??

What operating system version are you using?  How did it get onto the new hard drive?
    QuickTime 7.5.5 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL27
    QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl761
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/QuickTime/061-674 2.20090909.TgQt4/QuickTime764_Tiger.dmg
=New version of Quicktime installed but application reports it needs to have that version installed=
Open Application > Utilities > System Profiler and check the Quicktime version in Frameworks vs. the version in Applications.  I recently helped where the person had re-installed their operating system.  It had kept the newer Player application but had reverted to an earlier version of the underlying support framework that works with many applications.  Re-installing Quicktime 7.7 took care of the problem.

  • Upgrade itunes install new hard drive

    Hi there.
Long long time iTunes user here.  A while back I switched off automatic upgrades and have been sitting on version 9.1.1.12 for some time.  I've been meaning to update it ... and now I'd like to do that and more:  upgrade my C hard drive and convert to 64 bit Windows 7 (currently on 32bit Win7).
As such, my objective is to add the new C hard drive, install Windows 7 64 bit, then download & install iTunes 10.6.1 while keeping my library intact (playlists, ratings, play counts, etc).
I understand the difference between the Media folder (where the songs are) and the Music folder (where the library is).  Currently my Media folder is on a separate hard drive (G-Drive) while the Music folder is on the C-Drive.  My choices are to continue using the G-Drive as the Media folder location, or I can move all songs over to a network share located on Windows Home Server (where the music folder can be backed up).  I understand how to change the iTunes Media folder location in the advanced menu, and how to select "Consolidate Library" to complete the copying process.
Once I select which option is best for the Media folder, here's what I am planning to do:
    1. Copy of the iTunes Music folder and all subfolders (C:\Users\Master\Music\iTunes) onto a zip drive or network share
    2. Install the new hard drive
    3. Install Windows 7 64 bit
    4. Install iTunes 10.6.1.
    5. Replace the iTunes Music folder with the copy I made
    6. Change the Media folder to the correct location (either G-Drive or network share on WHS)
    Does that sound correct?
Once I install iTunes, should I replace the iTunes Music folder with the copy I made *before* I actually start (open and run) iTunes?
Once I start iTunes, can I simply change the default Media folder location so that it's pointed to the current location of the songs (either G-Drive or network share on WHS)?
Lastly, is it better (less complex, lower risk, etc) to simply keep my Media folder on the G-Drive, or does it matter?
Thanks a million for your guidance ... usually I try to figure everything out myself and not ask for help, but after having dealt with broken links in the past I want to be sure I don't mess up the library/media structure (not to mention lose playlists and ratings).  Again, a big THANK YOU.

Can anyone help?  Not sure who else to ask.  Really appreciate it.

  • Restoring iTunes music during hard drive crash

I recently installed a new hard-drive for my computer. I also recently ended my .me/.mac email address subscription about a month ago. I plugged my phone in and saw my original music was restored from a month ago, but nothing I purchased within the last 30 days. Is there any way to get the music I purchased recently to restore? Thank you.

  • Can I load "Pages" onto new hard drive without having to pay for it again?

I have a 5 yr old Mac that just had it's hard drive replaced.  I had paid for and loaded Pages onto the original hard drive.  Wondering if there's any way to load Pages onto my new hard drive without having to pay for the program again.  Thanks so much

If you originally installed Pages from a CD or DVD, reinstall it from there.
If you installed Pages from the Mac App Store, yes, from the Apple ID you purchased it with.
If you got Pages from the iTunes App Store, the Mac version of it is a separate purchase.

  • Importing library onto new hard drive??

    Hi,
Can anyone please help with this? I have recently moved in with my boyfriend and I want to add the data on my ipod onto his iTunes without overwriting his library. Can anyone let me know where to get software to do this eg podutil or something similar.....without having to pay for it?!?
    Thanks xx

Is there a way to import the pictures to the Lightroom library without importing them onto the hard drive of my new computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you import using the "Add" option, the photos are not moved, they are imported and left in their existing locations.

  • Problems with copying iPhoto library onto new hard drive from external HELP

I had to get a new hard drive installed onto my MacBook Pro, but was able to copy my iPhoto library onto my external hard drive via another computer before the old hard drive failed. Now, I am trying to copy that library back onto my MacBook.
After I copied the library onto the MacBook, when iPhoto was opened, it showed no photos but I could see album titles. Then when I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key, it was all clumped into one event and not nearly all of the photos were there. Also, I have right-clicked on the library to see package contents and everything seems to be there, but I don't know how to make it all show up in the library.
I've downloaded iPhoto Library Manager because I thought that might help (but haven't used it yet -- don't know how) and I just need some help to recover my iPhoto library... and is there a way to restore all the separate events imported and time/date stamps, in order to get all the photos in chronological order?

Should I just go through the iPhoto Library package contents and drag every folder into iPhoto?
No. That will get you massive duplication.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD
