Restoring iWeb /domain from Published Folders

Had a lightning strike and fried both my internal harddrive and my backup drive. Still 'might' be able to recover data from the external, but I'm looking for a work-around just in case.
Is there a way in iWeb (or using a 3rd party app) to convert published pages/folders back into something that iWeb can work with? I've read some older posts and it appears not, but thought maybe someone may have discovered a trick recently. Remaking them manually will be difficult, since the pages I created have many template modifications.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. If not I may give up on iWeb altogether, and switch over to Dreamweaver permanently.

Welcome to the discussions. A good reason to have iWeb Domain file backups offsite and/or on DVDs.

It's not possible in iWeb and it's hard to imagine someone ever coming up with a 3rd party app to do that. You've probably already seen section 2.3 of this FAQ page which gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Restoring iweb domain from published site?

I totally gaffed and didn't copy over my domain file from my old iweb application preferences. I just got a new intel imac and opened iweb and lo and behold my site wasn't there. I have it published to my .mac account and I can copy the web site files over from my idisk. Is there anyway I can use these files to get iweb to construct my domain and all its pages again so that I can edit them? I unfortunately don't have any way of retrieving my old domain file. If this isn't possible, can anyone recommend the least painful way of getting there?
    Thanks!

    Kevin...
unfortunatly.. if you don't have access to the old domain file then it's not looking good.
The best way for you to rebuild your site is to cut and paste them from your idisk into a new templet in iWeb.
I did it early on with my site and it took less time than you think... a couple of hours.
    Sorry for the bad news.

  • Moving website from published folders back to iWeb

I am currently working on a number of websites however when I went to publish one website to .mac it has put other websites in to a published folder. How do I move the works in progress websites from the published folders back to iWeb to continue working on them??

    Hi,
unfortunately there is no way to get html files (published files/pages) back into iWeb to edit them. To be edited in iWeb a site needs to be in the domain file (where iWeb stores its data).
    http://alyeska.altervista.org/en/iWebRetrieveWebsite.html
To manage more than one website they all need to be in the same domain file (showing up in iWeb at the same time) or you need have multiple domain files (not showing up all at the same time). You can't publish to folder, delete the site from iWeb, make a new one and get the one you deleted and published to a folder back in.

  • Restoring iWeb website from .mac and idisk files

my hard drive on my PowerMac failed this week and was replaced.
i am trying to restore my website in iWeb on the Mac. I sync with iDisk and it appears all the content is in directories there under /web/sites/iWeb.
To start up iWeb with all files in place on my Mac, where do I need to put these files?
    Thanks,

    J....
all of the iWeb files are saved in a file called DOMAIN on your hard disk. You find it here.
    harddisk/users/username/library/application support/iweb/domain
THIS is the file you have to back up after you publish or save your site. If your hard disk crashes again, just put the copy into the folder of this path and reopen iweb.
The post above about recopying the files into iWeb is right. It's not iWeb's fault that your disk crashed. Any program data that wasn't backed up, regardless of the application, was lost when that disk crashed.
I know this isn't what you needed to hear bro, but I hope it helps for the future.

  • Can you create an iWeb domain from an iWeb sight?

What happens if the computer you are using to create the iWeb crashes? Your iWeb page is still out there but the domain in Application Support/iWeb is now gone. Can I recreate that from the original site? I feel kind of dumb creating a whole new site that is still active.
This first came up because we run mobile accounts in our school. I only sync the desktop and documents folders. Then when a student moved to a new computer, the domain was not there. Or at least that is what I discovered. What they saw was when they opened iWeb, all the work they just did was gone. It wanted to start over. Even though what they had done prior was still on the web.
I am getting ready to show some of my teachers iWeb. I don't want them to have this same problem. Their sites may be quite extensive. And that much work to go lost would be a shame.

    Hi Brian,
iWeb's Domain file is kept in the user's Home folder Library:
    Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain
I think the easiest thing to do in your situation when you're finished working is just copy the Domain file to a usb flash thumb drive. Then you have your work with you and you can open and edit your site(s) from any machine running the same version of iWeb.
Remember also that flash drives can/will fail at some point. If you are building large sites it's not a bad idea to burn a copy of the Domain to a DVD now and then.

  • Reloading iWeb Domain from Backup Domain - Not working

My iMac hardrive crashed and died. We re-installed a new drive. We reloaded the old website back into the Applications Support folder for iWeb. But, every time we re-boot the iWeb keeps starting up with a new page. We then double click on the original icon and every thing is fine until we reboot again and again iWeb keeps defaulting to a new page and when we reload the original website all the newly added changes are no longer there and we have to start all over again.
Is there a fix to this?
    JKai

Yes, it is the original iWeb site we built from within iWeb. Here is another problem that is occurring. When you open the website from Safari the new changes are there. But when you reboot the computer the iWeb site reverts back to the older version where the changes we just made is no longer there.. but in Safari the NEW changes are there. Somehow the iWeb site we are working on keeps reverting back.
I will make the changes again but this time I will be sure to copy the iWeb site from the "Applications Support" folder and replace it with the version iWeb keeps reverting to - to see if that will work.
I will post my results some time today when I have time. Thank you and hope stay in touch to help me with the results.

  • Restoring iweb site from idisk

My hard drive from a Mac with OS 10.4.11 recently died a painful death and was unrecoverable. My files were unfortunately not backed up as they should have been (lesson learned). I have a new Mac and am trying to be able to access my iweb site without having to start over again. All of the files are accessible via idisk, but is there a way to restore them so that I can actually make edits in iweb?
    thanks!

  • Restore a domain from Time Machine

I opened iWeb today and it asked for the domain file. I pointed it to Library>Application Support>iWeb. But when it opened it was a very old version of the file it was missing several pages. I'm thinking MobileMe sync messed the version on my Mac. What is the correct way to restore my files?

Geoff ~ MobileMe live chat support is now 24/7 — see this announcement.
iWeb simply doesn't have the reliability of a dedicated blogging platform such as Posterous or Wordpress.

  • How to Restore iWeb Contents From iDisk?

After a format of my MBP I need to find out how to get the contents of my iWeb site back onto my Mac. Which directory does it belong to on my Mac for iWeb to recognize everything properly?

    So basically I'm screwed, right?
Unless you have a backup of your Home folder, otherwise yes
I can't copy the files from my iDisk to my Mac and have iWeb recognize them?
    No.
So when I start from scratch, will iWeb erase my current site from my iDisk?
If you give your new site a different name to the old one then NO, if you use a different name you will end up with two sites.

  • Need iWeb site from TM backup

    Hi,
I re-installed my OS and would like to bring back my iweb site I was working on from a Time Machine backup. I was hoping someone could direct me to the file that I need to restore to get my site I was working on back.
    Thanks guys

You need to restore the domain from the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ folder, where ~ is your home folder on the backup.

  • Restore Thunderbird Profile from Backed Up Computer

One of my computers needs to be reset to default factory settings. I have a back up of the files on the computer including Thunderbird data including the profile. However, I'm not sure how to restore my mom's profile to the newly reset computer. I know there's a service called Moz Backup but I can't even start the computer to use the program. All I have is the folders and files from the computer. Is it even possible to restore the profile from the folders and files on the hard drive?

Of course it is. Create a new profile and copy the old one over it.

  • Can somebody help me to restore my iWeb domain file from Time Machine (at the moment my whole life history is frozen online)?

I had to wipe my machine and create a new account. Now I can't restore my iWeb domain file and thus can't edit my site. When I do try to restore the file I'm told:
The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.
I've changed the permissions of the domain file/folder itself (within Time Machine) but I gather it wants me to change the permission of everything in there, which would presumably take hours and hours.
I've tried just dragging the domain file from the hard drive where the Time Machine backup is stored but the result of that is:
    Can’t open file “~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2.”
This is quite urgent because I am applying for a new job and can't display my latest work online. Any help much appreciated in advance.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I built a website, using iWeb.  I backed up daily with Time Machine and OS 10.6.  My HD crashed.  I replaced the HD and installed 10.5. But now I can't restore iWeb and my domain file. How do I restore my site files on the new drive?

I obviously dont know how to use this forum...my question to the community seems to be the truncated phrase in the title block above..you can scroll thru it to see my whole question....basiclly,.my question is:  How do I restore my iWeb domain files which are kept in  user>library>applicationssupport>iWeb>domain in my Time Machine date listings...to a newly installed disc.  I had a disk crash, removed the failed drive and installed another. I then installed OS 10.5 (I didn't have a copy of my 10.6). Now I'm having difficulty figuring out how to get the iWeb files from the Time Machine external drive used with the 10.6 to the new drive running 10.5...any help muich appreciated....!!
bob in St. Peters Nova Scotia...

Go to to your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in the Finder and then enter  Time Machine.  Go back to the last backup that has the domain file, select it and use the Restore button.

  • How can I edit or remove iWeb pages from Mobile me after I have published it to another site?

I have published iweb pages to another server and now I need to replace the mobile me version with page "pages moved to..." or at least I need to delete old version. However I can't find any way to do this from mobile me or from iWeb.
From Mobile me I cant find any way to even delete pages.
With iWeb I cant edit the old version because I cant find way to have two version of same pages. As I understand what I need is a version of my republished pages that only contains the index page "pages moved to...". But I cant create that because I cant have two versions.

  • Delete personal domain from iWeb

now that .mac moved to .me when ever i post a site it publishes to the personal domain that is listed in my profile but i don't want it published there but rather to the automatic url that mac provides (i.e. http://web.mac.com/username/Site...)
how do i removed a personal domain from my profile?
i found no preferences within iweb to do this, nor was i able to do it when i log into my mobile me settings (there i see the personal domain but no way to remove it)
    thanks!

Do you have a domain name that you have set up with iWeb and MobileMe? If you linked that name to just the default MobileMe URL, http://web.mac.com/username/, then any new site that is published will become the default that the domain name sends you to. You need to point the domain name to the specific site, http://web.mac.com/username/yoursite_foldername/index.html, in order to isolate the other sites from your domain name.
