Restoring/Loading iWeb sites to a new MacBook

My iMac G5 died and I've replaced it with a MacBook Pro.
I had saved my iWeb 08 sites to an external hard drive.
Is there any way to "reload"or "restore" those sites to the iWeb 08 application inside my new Macbook Pro?

iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder — that's the file you should have saved:

Since you have an external hard drive, hopefully you're using it within a wider backup strategy — Time Machine perhaps or a bootable clone via one of these apps...

If so, search for:
.sites2
...which is the iWeb Domain file's hidden extension. If you can find it, double-clicking it should open it in iWeb. Although you still may have problems as NOTE 1 here suggests:

  • Import iweb site in a new macbook

hi, i'm french sorry for my english
so my macbook hard disk broked last week, i buy a new macbook pro
but how can i do to continue my web site with iweb09 ?
i have no data just on my idisk and iweb says "open problem with the file ....iweb/Domains.sites2.
    how can i do ?
    thanks

Welcome to the discussions. Only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Moving iweb site to my new computer?

I just bought a new macbook pro. I am attempting to move my iweb domain to the macbook. I backed up the domain on my old computer (imacG5) to my idisk. I burned all the files onto a dvd. I want to move these files (five sites) into the domain file on my macbook pro. I am sitting here like a moron looking at the files; I've read th e posts that say to copy my domain to the new computer, but my domain is a big package of files and I am not sure how to "copy" them so they will open on my new computer.
    Thanks for any help!
    John Fitz

The Domain file should appear as a single file (though it is a "package" of files like you mention). Copying it to your new MacBookPro should be as easy as drag and drop. I would put it into the same default location as you found it...on your hard drive..../Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iWeb/... Drop it in this folder and if you are asked to overwrite and existing Domain file, this should be okay as long as you have not already started a new site on your new MacBook Pro.
Once you have this file copied over, you should be able to open iWeb on the new computer and see all your sites in the Site Organizer. Again, so that there is no confusion, the file that you need is called "Domain". Let me know if you have any trouble.
If you have found any of this information to be useful to you, please take the time to provide me with feedback by marking my reply as "solved" or "helpful" using those little buttons that you see in the title bar of this reply. I'd really appreciate it!

  • How do I get my old iweb sites into the new iweb 08 after upgrading?

I upgraded and now the new iweb 08 does not see all my old web site pages. How do Igetnthem into the new application?

I had a similar issure after buying a new iMac and trying to get my iweb sites onto the new computer. I called Apple tech support and they told me to copy the file "domain.site" form the user/library/application support/iweb folder from my old imac into the iweb folder located in the same directory on my new computer. Once it is copied to the new location, double click on the "domain.site" file and it should open in the new iweb program. They told me to check all the pages to make sure it works OK in the program. My problem is that the new iweb program crashed everytime I double click on the "domain" file. Hope this helps.

  • Take Image Of Computer And Load It Onto A Brand New MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I just purchased a MacBook Pro 13". I currently have a MacBook original (White Shell with Snow Leopard) which I want to mirror completely over to the new MacBook Pro.
So what I want is to completely erase (format) the new MacBook Pro and then load a complete mirror image of my current MacBook original on the new computer.
I bought a firewire cable to connect to the two and that works, but what software do I use to make the image of the MacBook original? Then how do I earse (format) the MacBook Pro and load the image onto it.
    Thanks a lo!

first make sure the OS on the old one will work with the new one.
put the old one in "target mode" and select it as a startup drive on the new one in System Preferences, then restart.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
if it boots your new one, check if all applications work properly.
if it's working, restart the new one from the OS install disc, got to Disk Utility and use Restore feature - drag the source drive (will have a FireWire icon) to the "source" bar and destination drive to the "destination" bar; there is an option to "erase destination."
be very careful not mix up the drives though or your data will be lost.
Restore in Disc Utility makes exact clone of the source drive
after it's finished, make sure the new one works and everything was transferred before doing anything else.
to install the new OS to the old one you'd need compatible install DVD, then select "erase and install" to put a new OS on it.
    try at your own risk.

  • Restoring old iweb site from idisk

THrough sheer ignorance, I created a "new Site" in iweb, not realizing it would replace my exiting website, which is far more important. I want to restore my old site. I am able to access the old site through idisk, but have no idea how to relink it so that it reappears as my website. (Someone suggested opening the index.html in plain text editor and correcting the URL, but I have no idea how to do that. Tried opening it in "text Edit" and no URL is there)
Appreciate any help!!!! This is killing me!

TextEdit is what is says - it is an html editor so that you use it to edit html code, so not url will show up as it does in Safari etc. Safari is a browser and TextEdit does what it says on the tin - edits html code.
The easiest way is to go back into iWeb and open your domain file with the site on it and re-publish all of that site and it will be back at the top again. That is assuming that you have the relevant domain fiel and have not deleted it?
If you publish another site in iWeb, assuming that they have different names, they will not cancel each other out, but what will happen is that the second published site will be at the top, so all you need do is re-publish your original site from iWeb and it will be back at the top again.
You can always get to all your iWeb sites via the url http://web.me.com/username/sitename so Site1, Site2 etc.

  • How to restore uploaded iWeb sites as iWeb data on your computer.

My original internal HD died. Fortunately, I had data backed up with Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had turned off automatic backup because Time Machine was giving my computer problems and I'd forgotten to do a manual backup. So the last backup my Time Machine did was in 2008. In that time when I Time Machine was turned off, I had created a few sites on iWeb and uploaded to my Mobile Me account. I now have a new HD and restored all my data from my Time Machine backup but the most up to date are from 2008. I've lost the iWeb files created in 2009. Is it possible to restore my iWeb files to my computer from the files I uploaded to the Mobile Me server? If so, how would I do it? Hope there's a way. Thanks.

As you already found out you'll have to rebuild from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.
Also it might be a good time to develop a backup strategy.

  • How do I restore from time machine on a new macbook pro ?

    Hello,
My Macbook pro was stollen about 2 months ago and i'm currently debating on which Macbook retina I should get, the higher 13" or the higher 15" model. In either case, how do I go about restoring the system to which my old macbook pro was at ? i.e getting the same itunes songs files, iPhoto pictures etc.
I have read that if the version of the os x in the time machine was an earlier than that on the new machine it would cause problems. so how do can I work around that if i face this problem ?
One last question, how can I know the space needed on the new system for the restoration from the time machine?

The new machine will boot into Setup Assistant, and you'll be prompted to import the data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. A system-version mismatch is OK.

  • Issues with restoring a Time Machine backup onto new Macbook Pro Retina

I recently got a new Macbook Pro Retina and I've been trying to restore a Time Machine backup made today from my old Macbook Pro laptop. I didn't restore from the first start up (foolishly, seemingly) simply because of the trivial reason of wanting to see the system all clean and new.
I've tried the Migration Assistant but it gets stuck on "looking for source..", despite having the ex.HD plugged in and double checking the existance of the backup itself on the ex.HD.
I've also tried booting the laptop up in the 'restore' mode (cmd R) and restoring from there but it sends me in a constant loop of 'this backup was from a previous model of laptop' or something to that affect. It also doesn't display the recent backups at all, only displaying those from the beginning of this year for some reason. All backups are in the same place on the ex.HD so its not an issue with locating the backups.
Really stuck on this one! Would really appreciate some help!
Thanks a lot, and merry Christmas

Yes, you can restore to another machine if needs be.

Thanks both - I have accessed my itunes account using my apple ID - but I don't see how I can restore all my previous purchases and am still nervous about plugging in my phone should it not recognise the account - though it did tell me this was the third computer I'd asked for access - which is correct.  Are you saying I can now plug in my phone and sync without loosing everything on my iphone? and what about the apps?
I said not to plug in the phone until you have restored the iTunes Library:
Open iTunes: Store Menu (in Sidebar) Purchased:
Select music 'Not on this Computer' and download, repeat for Apps etc.

  • Loading OS 9 onto a new MacBook?

Aloha, I just bought a great little MacBook. I have a few OS 9 compatible programs I'd still like to use. Can I load OS 9 onto a MacBook 2.0 GHz?
PS I don't have the OS 9 Software either, know where I can get it if it can be run on new MacBook?
    Thanks for any help!
    Mark

Hi, Mark. Classic mode is not supported on any Intel Mac. Sheepshaversupports the installation of OS 9.0.4 or earlier (not any later version) on such Macs, and enables the use of applications that will run in those OS versions. Some apps won't. To try it with your apps, of course you'll need to buy an OS 9.0 or 9.0.4 installer CD. The only dependable source I know for those, now that AppleRescue is defunct, is http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/, which charges unconscionable prices for them. If you aren't willing to pay those prices, you'll have to take your chances on buying a used installer CD on Ebay or elsewhere. Be aware that many Ebay sellers of Mac OS installer CDs and DVDs really have no idea what they're selling, or are misrepresenting it deliberately. Buy only an OS 9.0 or 9.1 CD with a white label and a large gold "9" on it, and be sure it doesn't say "Upgrade" on it.

  • How to restore files from Timemachine backup to new Macbook

    Hi,
I have just got a new Macbook and want to transfer the photos from iphoto on an existing iMac onto it.
I have the iMac backed up to Timemachine but don't want to clone the new Macbook from the iMac settings/files, just copy across the iPhotos.

  • How to redirect viewers to my iWeb site on a new domain?

I've moved my website to a new domain with a new Web host (which was much easier than I expected). Now, I'd like to redirect anyone who clicks on my old site to my new one, but I haven't found a way to do that. Any suggestions?

If you use personal domain at MobileMe then nothing will change.
Delete the CNAME record where you manage your domainname and point to your new host.
It takes a few hours for the change to propagate thru the network, so do not delete your MMe site yet.
    Your visitor won't notice.
If you use the web.me.com address then it is more complicated.
Duplicate the index.html file in your site folder as many times as there are webpages and rename each duplicate to the name of each webpage. You have to delete the original webpage.
Then open each renamed file in a plaintext/HTML editor of your choice and change the redirect URL to the same page on your new host.
    It looks like this :
    <html><head><title></title><meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; URL=http://url.to.new.page.html"></head><body></body></html>
Do so AFTER you publish to your new host.
    Practice.

  • Loading CS5 Master Collection onto new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive

I have a complete, legitimate, registered version of CS5 Master Collection. I also have a new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive. I have lost the disk, but have the box and confirmation email when I registered the product, with the key code. This product cost alot of money and I really need to get it onto my new machine. Can I do this without having the additional cost of a new DVD drive? I already paid for and own the software with keys so it's not like I'm trying to bend anything or do it for free. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Download the CS5 Master Collection trial version from
    http://prodesigntools.com/all-adobe-cs5-direct-download-links.html
You must follow the Very Important Instructions on that page first otherwise the links will not work.
Launch the trial and enter your serial number to license it.

  • Publishing an iWeb site with a newer version of iWeb.

I recently upgraded my MacBook to a Mac book pro running snow leopard an iWeb 09. I built my website with the old MacBook and an older version of iWeb. I had no trouble moving to and loading it on the new laptop but cannot get it to publish changes. It always comes up as "unknown error." I tried publishing to folder and got the same error. I did some searching and so far the only thing I have come up with is the possibility that it won't publish because I am not using the same version of iWeb. Is that correct? Any advice? Thanks.
