Restoring Mail and Safari settings.

Where would I find the Mail settings ( accounts, smart folders etc) I want to restore them after doing a re-install, as well as my Safaro bookmarks, but restoring the preference Folders didn't do the job.
Thanks

Hey Fred,
I'm in the same boat as you. I just got a MBP today and in the process of a selective restore. This link may help with safari. I'm sure the Mail folder is someplace in the same folder.

  • How to restore Mail and Safari from TM

Here's the background... I posed this question earlier today...
Just got my daughter a new 2.4GHz/160GB HDD/Wht Macbook for college. when she was running the initial setup for User/Account/Shortcut name she input her email user name as her shortcut account name (the name that appears in Finder under Places with the house icon).
Question is - can the name she enter that appears in Finder under Places with the house icon be changed or renamed??
Niel answered/solved the question via the following instruction:
Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, release the padlock, control-click her name, choose Advanced Options, and change the settings.
    end background info.
So, being the idiot Dad that I am... I decide to do the same on my 2 year old iMac (that was working wonderfully I might add) only to find out that my ALL my mail and associated folders "On My Mac" disappeared as well as ALL my Safari bookmarks, Dock, Menu Bar and you knows what else changed and/or dissappeared. Its like the system did an OS reset. YIKES! Niel's instruction didn't indicate this... not that it's his fault - its mine! Niel's instruction worked fine on a NEW Mac, but changed things terribly on my 2yr iMac.
So "my" question is - how can I recover from this??
Did multiple TM backups on 7/12/08. went to restore latest 7/12/08 backup but wasn't really sure what to backup. I hope I'm not messed up and can recover from this. My name change was so minor I feel like an idiot for doing it and these discussion groups have ALWAYS helped. So please - HELP me again. Can I or should I do a complete system restore to get me back or does this apparent OS reset mean I'm screwed? Also, never done a restore yet, so I'm kind of worried I'll make things worse. I LOVED my machine before I made the change and would LOVE to get back. Any and all input welcomed.
    Signed,
    Dummy Daddy

Should I call you Daddy, or just Dummy? (LOL),
You have one of two options. If you really want to use the new name, you can do so, but it will entail using the command line (Terminal). It's a pretty easy thing to do, though.
Another option is to just go back to the "Accounts" pane, and reverse the change you made.
Your old HOME folder, along with all the things you are now missing, is still there. If you have any doubts, look in the "Users" folder for it. Do not "monkey" with it until you decide which of the above options you would like to use.
Post back with your choice, and I'll provide instructions.

  • Mail and Safari Crash after Full Restore with Time Machine

I did a complete restore with time Machine. I opened Mail and it did it's thing importing all the mail and creating it's new index and folders. Now Mail and Safari will not work. They crash every time I open them.
They were working fine, the only reason I did the restore was I inadvertently formated my hard drive while trying to install boot camp.
Anyone have any idea what to do?
    Mario

I have exactly the same problem as iGin. All other programs appear to be behaving normally, just Apple Mail and Safari crash immediately after starting them up - very annoying!

    mail and safari crash

    Hey petershohdy,
First, try force closing the two apps if they're running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
from: iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137
And if that doesn't help, I would reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
from: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
And if that doesn't resolve the issue then I would backup the device to iTunes and restore it. Just be cautious and back up first, since restoring deletes all content and settings:

  • Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?

I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted?

While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time).  I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). Let me know if there is anything else you need. Thanks for the help LInc.

  • Mail and safari crash after update to 10.4.10

I have recently installed the update to Tiger (OSX 10.4.10) and ever since I have installed the update I have a problem with both Mail and Safari. In Safari the browser just closes (no dialog pops up, it's as if I'd just quit it). This doesn't have a particular point when it closes, it could be after as little as 5 seconds, or as much as an hour or so.
Safari does something similar however it is only when I click "New" or Forward/Reply, to create a new email, it just closes. It recieves and opens emails normally.
I don't know what I can do, so far I've had no luck finding anyone else with this problem. However I need my email for work, so it's getting quite a problem.
As a note using Fire-Fox I don't have any problems with programs closing, it is only these two programs.

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, if you’ve installed Safari 3 Beta, uninstall that first, then reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
If you installed the latest Security Update, you may need to reinstall that as well:
    Security Update 2007-006 (Universal)
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
BTW, please update the Operating System field on your My Settings’s profile (and click Save), so that the version of Mac OS X you’re running now automatically appears in all your posts and not just in some of them.

  • Problems accessing mail on Mac Mail and Safari

I'm having problems with accessing my email account, both through Mac Mail and Safari.  The domain appears to be blocked.  I receive the following error message when I click on the alert icon beside my inbox in Mail:

Both methods of accessing email work on my laptop on the same internet connection, so it appears to be a problem unique to this machine.

    wmail.speakeasy.net
Launch the Network Utility application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

    Step 1
Select the Lookup tab and paste into the address field (command-V). Press return. Post the output that appears below – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Step 2
Select the Ping tab and do the same. Please enter the same input as you did in Step 1. Don't use the output of Step 1 as input to Step 2.

Some web browsers and mail clients will automatically convert a domain name such as "www.example.com" to a clickable URL, such as http://www.example.com. That will interfere with the test. If necessary, edit the input in the Network Utility window to remove any added characters.

  • Mail and Safari crashing

Not until I moved to 10.5.2 have I had so many crashes and lock ups. It's as if I'm working on a PC. The problem seems to be when I'm working in mail and Safari. I know there is no solution to this problem but I thought I should post my frustration. I've switched my browser to FireFox and will see if that helps. I will also try and find a different mail client other than Mail.

Check these Console logs for clues. Look for large blocks of rapidly-repeating messages being written to the logs cited in that link. This indicates a process is logging excessively, preventing sleep. Known causes of this include software distributed with Canon scanners and HP All-In-One Printer-Fax-Copier devices.
If you find large blocks of rapidly-repeating messages, post a small sample for analysis.

  • Problems with Mail and Safari

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.11 and am having some consistent problems with Mail and Safari on my MacPro Dual 2.66. Here they are:
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, selecting these applications from the dock no longer opens the application (or a new window if already opened), but causes them to be revealed in the finder.
In Safari, when this problem occurs, another symptom seems to be that new windows will ONLY open in a new tab, even though I have preferences set to open links in a new window. If I click on a bookmark within a folder in the bookmark toolbar, Safari will open ALL the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs!!
In Mail, when I open my Inbox, clicking on various messages will highlight (in blue) ALL the messages I'm clicking on, instead of simply displaying the highlighted message in the reader.
The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot my machine, which is getting to be a total drag, especially since this seems to happen fairly often.
One other thing that may be related- if my screen saver is running, and I move the mouse to go to an active screen, the computer will "freeze." It stays like this indefinitely- I figured out that if I press the button on the machine itself it will go to sleep, and I can wake it up and then everything is fine, but I don't understand what's going on.
I have tried using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, and have used OnyX to clean out my system cache and aall sorts of other stuff, but to no avail.
Is anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm starting to get really frustrated. Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Scott,
I had posted earlier that I had Flash payer problems and then QuickTime and PDF preview problems too, on my Intel PowerMac. I could not figure out what the problem was, because fixing permissions and moving plugins did not work. Console indicated that the Quicktime components were not found, with the problem in a webkit pref file somewhere (nil field value). Anyway, I bailed and reinstalled Leopard from a 10.5.0 DVD, and then updated using the combo updater to 10.5.3. Everything worked. Then, after the 'Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 1', it all broke again. This time, repairing permissions resulted in:
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Home/lib/jvm.cfg", should be 0, user is 95.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.2/Libraries/classlist" , should be 0, user is 95.
Now it all works again. This is obviously a flaw with the Java update, and also somehow Disk Utility did not find it earlier. Anyway, take a look at reverting the Java update, or manually changing user for those files (I suppose user 0 is root, but maybe it is nobody).
    Obscure....

  • Slow opening of mail and safari!

Mail and Safari take a very long time - one.2 minutes to open on my imac with 10.3.
Safari keeps bouncing in the dock. Then, after 20 bounce, it stops. The black triangle under the icon isn't displayed. After 20 seconds safari opens!!!
mail: bounce just 4-5 times, then stops bouncing, the triangle is displayed, but no windows is opened. If i right click on the icon, the windows says "application not responding".
After a minute the window opens.
    WHY?

  • Safari and 10.6.2 upgrade. Mail and Safari will not open.

I upgraded to 10.6.2 and Safari. Now I cannot open my Mail or Safari. I get a message that says it Unexpectedly Quit. I see in the details it says unable to gather system configuration information. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?

    HI,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.launchservices.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash, restart your Mac and try to launc Mail and Safari. If that doesn't help...
Download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)
It's ok to do this even though you are running 10.6.2. Make sure and repair disk permissions after the installation.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from

How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from my Power Mac G5 2.3Ghz? I just purchased a new 2.5 MacBook Pro which will be delivered tomorrow, and I want to to know how to transfer Mail and Keychain?
Thank You in advance for your reading and replying.
    Kindest Regards,
    Sebastian

Rather than using Migration Assistant, which can cause trouble with the PPC to Intel change, simply boot the G5 in FireWire target disk mode and manually transfer the following:
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
You might want to look over Kappy's helpful guide for migrating, which covers the full process for a manual migration (including the above files).
    Hope this helps...

  • Mail and Safari no longer connect to the Internet, but connection is live?

I have a Quicksilver G4 running OSX 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4 and Mail 2.1.3, connected to the Internet via Ethernet and a BT home Hub setup. Recently the Mac refused to connect to the Internet although a PC connected to the same hub did. I tested the connection with a laptop and found the cable to be fine and a good connection. I ran system diagnostics which tells me the Mac is connected to the Internet and the connection is fine - except that Mail no longer sends or receives mail, and Safari tells me I am not connected to the Internet.
I've tried every test I can think of - the connection appears fine as far as the ethernet cable, Network Diagnostics state that I have a good connection, yet neither application will connect to the server. I have changed no software in years other than Apple updates, and this is the first problem in many months of trouble-free usage.
The BT Home Hub is showing as an active location in system profiler, all else that should be, appears enabled. Can anyone help?
What more can I do to get my Mac back on-line?

    Hi Heather,
In System Preferences>Network>Proxies Tab, make sure none are checked ON.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Airport Interface...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
So if you put 17.149.160.49 in Safari's URL bar & it connects to Apple, then these DNS numbers should cure it.

  • Frequent crashes on Mail and Safari since Lion installed

Since upgrading to Lion on my mid 2007 20inch iMac I get extremely frequent Mail and Safari crashes, usually a few seconds after launch with no user input, and all with the same error on the crashed thread:
    __THE_SYSTEM_HAS_NO_PORT_SETS_AVAILABLE__
This even occurs after a totally clean install and no migration of any previous user data. I am only using iCloud for email.
I have tried repairing permissions and run disk checks which are all OK.
    Any suggestions?
