Restoring Music to Computer - 'Date Added'

Hi
My Macbook had to be reformatted so the HDD has been wiped.
I have to restore the music on my iPod by transferring it from there onto my Macbook.
I've added my music over the past few years and on iTunes, I like sorting it according to the 'date added' column.
I'm worried that when I transfer the music onto my Macbook, it will lose the original 'date added' information and my iTunes will just show everything as though it was added today.
Is there anyway I can get it to preserve the original date added data?
Thanks, would REALLY appreciate if it someone had the answer to this.

  • How do you restore music when computer and iPod both die and get replaced?

My computer crashed, so I backed up music to an exterior hard drive, and they had to gut the computer and rebuild it. Same day, my iPod died. I recycled it and got a new one. So now that my computer is rebuilt, I can't download the sogns from my iPod. The back up hard drive then broke down. The tech is trying to fix that. Once he does, what is the best way to transfer my music back to my itunes account so I can synch my new iPod?

I have a follow up question to this:
My computer also crashed and when a tech restored it, my iTunes backed to 2007. My Ipod is apparently passed warranty and has 60g worth of music! Is there any way to retransfer what's on my ipod back onto my itunes? When I tried to resync my ipod to itunes it wanted to wipe my entire ipod as if it didn't recognize it. Tech support kept asking for my ipod number when this is a itunes problem. What can I do or where can I go for help?

  • How to restore music on computer after new hard drive installed?

had new hard drive installed and am not able to retrieve/find music that was backed up on my computer before new hard drive was installed.  Only music that was in the "cloud" was able to be retrieved. Any idea where it could be?
    Thanks!

Did you reinstalled iTunes ? It looks like you had a newer version of iTunes with the corresponding database, and now your iTunes seem to be an older version. If you are a little patient, you might easily fix this with iTunes 10.5 which should come out very very soon since iOS 5 has been annonced for tomorrow.

  • Backup iPod Touch music to computer without adding it to iTunes Library

I would like to backup/copy the music and books from my Mom's iPod Touch to my computer without mixing it in with my personal library.  I basically want to move all of the iPod Touch's content to a folder on my harddrive ("Mom's iPod" or whatever).  I have already created a backup in iTunes, but it is my understanding that the iTunes backup does not back up the music or books.  Is there a way to do this?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Based on the recomendations by lllaass, I tried 2 different programs.  Both were selected because they were free:
The first program I tried was SharePod.  This decision was based on CNET & user reviews.  It worked great for moving the music from the iPod to the computer, was easy to use, and was free; however, it is limited to music (it had a photo section but it did not see the one photo on the iPod so I was not able to test the feature).  If all you need to move is music I recommend this solution.
After I realized there were eBooks on the iPod, I had to find a second program to back them up.  I used Syncios (again based on CNET & user reviews).  This also worked great for backing up the eBooks, and I was even able to backup the apps (all were free apps, but I thought I would test the feature anyway).  I did not try to backup the music because I already backed it up with SharePod, but I would imagine it will work as well as the books & apps.
**BEWARE** when installing Syncios: the reviews stated the install adds malware.  To avoid the program installing additional software, make sure to select custom install and uncheck the additional programs!

  • Import date added

    hi all,
i just bought a new macbook and after i imported all of my songs from my old windows itunes library, i lost all of the dates added. i'd love to be able to import the dates along with the songs but have not found a way. please help. thanks.

    Hi, Mick,
so I manually relocated all my music to outside my
home directory and that way I could just back up my
home directory in one place and copy it across to the
other as needed. I then somehow managed to point
Your situation sounds a little different than Terin's, because Terin wanted to migrate his whole music library (meaning his music files and his iTunes Library file, which is iTunes' catalog--the terminology around iTunes libraries is a little confusing) to a new User on a new machine. You wanted to move your music files to a new location, but it would be the same User (and thus, the same iTunes Library file) that would make use of those music files. However, both of you needed the library file to know the current location of the relocated music files while leaving all the other information in the library file, including Date Added, intact.
Anyway, Apple provide details of moving your iTunes
    music library:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
Yes, that procedure would have maintained the relationship between the catalog, i.e., the iTunes Library file, and the music files as the music files were being moved to their new location. Instead, when you added or imported the relocated music files to iTunes, the library file thought they were brand new entries.
I'd like to be able to tell Apple that actually
moving, instead copying and then deleting, the
library can be a useful and practical feature
request. However I can't see them spending the time
The copying step does provide a safeguard against a catastrophic loss of files during a big file moving process, so I can't see Apple getting away from that.
Even though it seems editing these dates is
impossible from within iTunes, at the end of the day
these are just files that needs modifying. I was kind
of hoping that there was some scriptable file editor
out there (hexedit?) that could be programmed up to
read the unix creation date and somehow jam it into
the music file's Date Added field. That info may very
well be meta-data and so I'm probably way out of my
    league here.
The Date Added indeed is metadata, and it's contained within the iTunes Library file. It may also be stored with the music file itself, but iTunes relies on its library file, which has a richer set of available metadata fields, and I think the iTunes Library file's value would override (probably should say overwrite) whatever is in the music file. No doubt, theoretically there's a way to do what you describe, either directly to the library file or through the iTunes Music Library.xml file, but that definitely is way out of my league.
Sorry I can't come up with a good answer for you.

  • How to restore my old Itunes Library WITH the DATA (plays & date added) from a time machine

    Hi,
I recently got my macbook fixed through the apple store and the repairers replaced my hardrive, therefore wiping my computer of all its infor, including my Itunes library. Luckily, I had everything backed up on my time machine.
My question is how I can put back all my music into Itunes but also restore my data such as ratings, date added, and number of plays. Of course, I just want all my music back on my computer but stuff like this is what makes my library unique and personal to me. I enjoy listening to my music in order of when I downloaded them, bringing me back to specific experiences and times of my life where I enjoyed the group of songs, but I cannot do that when my Itunes has the "date added" of my songs all on the same date (the date that I'm putting my music back on).
Is there any way to take my itunes from library from my time machine and restore that back onto my itunes? (I've recently updated my Itunes too)
    Please, anything helps!
    Thanks!

Depending on what kind of problems, they may be damaged.
Long story short, all I want to do is restore my Itunes and just the Itunes from where and what it was like before.
Have you already set up a user account?  If so, you might be able to selectively restore your iTunes library from your backups, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
But the user account you've set up may not be recognized as the same one as on your backups; you may not have permission to view, much less restore, the library.

  • When I drag music from a folder that contains songs by different artists and then sort by date added it shows the songs in alphabetical order by artist?

When I drag a bunch of songs with different artists from a folder on my computer to the itunes library and sort by Date added it puts them into alphabetical order by artist. I am able to workaround this by using date modified. Why does itunes do this? This started happening in July. Prior to that never had this problem. Been adding my music the same way for almost a decade.

They are added in the same minute. I do not see the second area next to that if it should be. I'm guessing an update to a newer itunes build is responsible. It's a shame. I am using the sort by date modified. But now whenever I modify a file in Itunes it automatically moves it to the top of the list. I am trying to keep the newest stuff at the top of my itunes.

  • How to retain original song data (Date Added, etc.) after computer reformat.

    Hello!
I recently had to reformat my computer, and I was able to copy all my music files and data to an external hard drive.
I currently have iTunes installed on my C drive (Windows 7) and all my music files are on a partition of my PC hard drive (P:). See image below.
What I like to do is to retain all the original song information (Date Added, Last Played, Play Count, etc.) from before I reformated, without all the songs having a Date Added of today's date and time.
I've tried to research this elsewhere on the Internet. A couple suggestions I've read pertain mostly to Macs but included the following:
~ Using the "iTunes Library.itl" file by choosing a library. Not sure how to do this method on the Windows version. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3155068?start=0&tstart=0)
~ Changing the iTunes Media folder location (under Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced tab). I changed it to the folder above (P:\My Music\iTunes\) and clicked OK but nothing happens.
Any help or detailed instructions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, I partially solved the problem.
I primarily followed the steps under Re-creating the iTunes Library file on this page:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
I imported using the iTunes Music Library.xml file that I saved before reformating. This file had all the correct library information before I reformatted, including the Play Count, Play Date UIC, Rating, and Date Added data. Snipet here:
    <dict>
              <key>Track ID</key><integer>20090</integer>
              <key>Name</key><string>Killer Queen</string>
              <key>Artist</key><string>Queen</string>
              <key>Composer</key><string>Freddie Mercury</string>
              <key>Album</key><string>Greatest Hits I</string>
              <key>Date Added</key><date>2011-02-27T21:44:06Z</date>
              <key>Play Count</key><integer>5</integer>
              <key>Play Date UTC</key><date>2011-04-14T05:11:12Z</date>
              <key>Rating</key><integer>80</integer>
    </dict>
Upon importing, all the music and playlists are now in my library along with all the original data I had before (Last Played, Plays, Ratings)...
...EXCEPT for the Date Added column. All the songs in my library show the same date of 05/15/2012 under Date Added.
Is there a reason why the Date Added data is not carried over?
On a side note: my music hard drive partition before the reformat was "J:", now it is "P:". So, to make it work I made a quick find/replace to the iTunes Music Library.xml so that all "\J:\" now show "\P:\". If this makes a difference, let me know.
    Thanks!

  • If library is put on another computer will 'Date Added' field be lost? Thx!

Hi there, I'm planning on reformating my PC (virus problems) and of course i want to take my music along on an externam HD with but I'm not sure how to put my music back while preserving the Date Added field as well as Ratings and Play Count....
any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Bryan!
To preserve your playlist and related information, you have to include the iTunes Library files from your old computer in the transfer to your new computer.
They tell iTunes what songs are in your Library, where the song files are located as well as playcounts, ratings, etc.
It's important to maintain the exact same directory structure for your music files on the new computer as you had on the old one, i.e. if the path was C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music , it must remain the same ... including the same Windows User Account name.

Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

If you restored as new, without using a backup, and still only get an option to restore, there is a hardware problem or the phone was previously hacked (jailbroken, downgraded iOS, unauthorized unlock).  Your only option is to take it to Apple or whoever provides iPhone service in your country.

Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking".  Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

When in recovery mode you can't backup the iPod.
You will have to restore via iTunes. See:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
