I need to restore my ipod....Which is a pain since we own 5 ipods. My problem with that is that I have toooooo many songs, videos, movies, and apps in my itunes account, since each one of us has different taste, specially with the kids. So I wanted to know which program you recommend so that I can back up my ipod touch and get the items back in it without having to pick and choose each song out of over 3000 possible choices. I have Podmaxx on our computer as requested by my oldest who's only 12, but she doesn't know if it works good or not, but she liked it because she can create her own ringtones...Please help, I don't want to just download something online and end up with the same headache of choosing one by one.

five ipods and one itunes library? wow. sounds like a major operation.
this might not help you right now. but you do know you can have different itunes libraries on your computer? hold the shift key while itunes is loading up and you will get options to create a new library or select a different one. next time you load up itunes the last library opened will load, so you will need to use shift to switch between them.
OR you could keep different playlists for each iPod and just sync that playlist. i have more music than i want on my iPod, so i have playlists 'On iPod' and 'not on iPod' and just sync 'on ipod'
there are many threads with 'ipod to computer' suggestions on them, just use the search discussions box, i'm sure you'll find an answer.

You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Next, authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account. In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials.
If possible, either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync. To do this, right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc. For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases. After you restore from backup, you MUST sync to restore your iTunes content. No iTunes content is included in the iPhone backup. Your apps should be in your iTunes library, just sync them back to your phone. If for some reason your apps are not in your library, you can re-download them for free:

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

The backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.
Redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
and then restore from the same backup again.

I did a backup on my iPod touch and it said it worked...but now it won't let me access anything and says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this IPod before it can be used." I will lose all my videos and pics if I do that

I did a backup on my iPod touch last night and it said it worked...I wanted to make sure my 1100 pictures and videos, mostly of my son, were safe since we rarely use the iPod touch anymore since we bought an iPad...I can't find them or I have no idea how to access them...I do not have a MAC...I have an HP computer with windows...

They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

I'm trying to clean out my iTunes and iPod, and in doing so I've realized that I have over a gig of "other" material taking up space on my iPod. One solution I was told about was to restore my iPod back to it's facotry settings (after you've backed it up) in order to help eliminate or help make the "other" section take up less space. I'm worried about doing this however seeing as my iPod has music from three or four other computers on it seeing as I manually sync music to my ipod rather than have it sync on it's own. I'm worried that even if I back the iPod Touch on my computer, that all the other music from the three or four other computers and iTunes' will be erased and only music left on my iTunes, on my laptop will be left over after words. This wouldn't be such an issue if I didn't have litterally THOUSANDS of music to sort through between these four computers.
Also, does anyone have any other solutions on how to reduce the amount that "other" takes up on your iPod? Thanks in advance! Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if you will loose your music or not, but I have a suggestion. If you sinc your ipod to your itunes, all the music from it should transfer to your itunes, it shouldn't matter whether it was downloaded on that computer or not. If you do this and then restore your ipod to factory settings and you do loose your music, then you can just sinc your ipod to your computer, or itunes account and then you will get your music back. Yes, of course.   Did you set up with your Apple ID?
Reset the iPad to factory and set it up with your Apple ID and password.   You can still sync different apps, music and other stuff onto the iPad, the devices need not mirror each other.

I have been getting this error message since about the end of June when I updated to the latest version of iTunes. It's pretty annoying. Let me lay out how this has been happening for the past month, the best I can. I have a 32GB 4th gen iPod Touch
I load content up to my iPod. Music, Apps, Videos, pictures, etc.
My iPod works well for a little while, days sometimes a week is the longest I went without seeing this message.
I connect iPod back to my laptop through the standard pack in Apple USB connector.
I get the "Itunes cannot read the contents of ipod. Go to the summary tab in Ipod preferences and click Restore to restore this ipod to factory settings." message. When I go to the preferences tab, I click restore and iTunes gets stuck trying to restore my iPod. Then I have to uplug my iPod. And Shutdown/Restart my PC reconnect my iPod, and go through the restore process again.
I have been doing this for as I said, a month. It's getting pretty grueling to keep havomh putting cotent on my iPod after these restores.
I've tried everything.
I've stopped autosync, it still happens.
I tried to reinstall iTunes(be it I didn't full uninstall before trying to install again and got the option to fix corrupted files and such
I've deleted all old back up, and it still happens
Today is the fist time I'm fully uninstalling iTunes, and then reinstalling to see if this works.
But do you guys have any otehr solutions for this? As I said, this didn't start happening until I installed the lastest version of iTunes 10.6.3

- When you have the problem, connect it to another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
- Try just restoring the iPod to factory settings/new iPod. Do not restore from backup. If you still have the problem with this and all computer that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Try doing a level reformat of the iPod's flash storage instead to see if that kills the restore loop using the instructions in the article below.

HT201210 i tried updating my ipod and it told me to restore my ipod, i didnt know what that ment, i asumed it ment ugrade or update, so i tried restoring and it said there was an error, so because of this IOS page my ipod is stuffed

okay I'll tell you the whole story; okay, I had this "1" on my settings icon and in my updates, it said there was a new software, I read a bit about it, and it said I needed 50% and needed Internet connection, so I turned on our "wifi" box. it said I can install so I pressed it. and then the Apple logo came up in the middle of the black screen with a loading line below it. so I left it for about 1 hour or so, and came back and it was half way, so I left it again of the same amount of time, and when I came back it had the computer side of the white cord that you get with your IPod and an arrow pointing towards the ITunes Icon, so I guessed that I had to go to ITunes so I did, and it told me to restore my iPod, I didn't know what that meant so I clicked Restore and Update, and up the top of the screen it said it was "extracting" and then a alert came saying there was an error, so I I clicked "ok" and then my IPod went to a black screen and the Apple Logo appeared in the middle of the screen again, I left it for 1 hour and came back it hadn't changed, so I left it over night on charge and in the morning it hadn't hanged, so I took it off charged for the rest of the day, and it said it needed charge, so the black screen and the apple logo must have taken away charge, so as soon as I plugged it into the computer again, it went back to the black screen with the apple logo, so now it wont even let my reset my iPod, so now I have to see if it is fixable, if it is not I blame the instructions IOS resolving thingy, and get a new iPod or spend a lot of money fixing it, I would trade it, but I doubt my folks would let me, so thanks a lot, if you know any way of fixing my iPod please "please" PLEASE! help me, it would be greatly appreciated, if I don't get it working I may loose friends, because my iPod was for some of my best friends the only way I stay in contact with them. Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Every time I try to restore my iPod touch 4G, I get an error message.

I plug my iPod touch into my computer, open iTunes, go to Devices, go to my iPod touch "King" and click on Restore. It asks if I want to Back Up the iPod, I choose Don't Back Up because I already have a Back Up I want to restore it to. Then the usual, "Are you sure you want to restore the iPod "King" back to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased." I click restore and it gives me a warning about how I haven't transferred my purchases, and they'll be lost. I wasn't worried about that so I skipped that. Then it gave me the iOS 6 Software update description, clicked Next. Then the License Agreement, wont through that. After I pressed agree, I got an error message saying: There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "King". A duplicate file name was specified. I did have another iPod touch used with this iTunes (3G), same music, plus more on my 4G. I'm using iTunes 10.7, the latest one, and Windows 7. The restore works on my laptop, but it doesn't have the Back Up I want.
What do you think the problem is?

Well, the problem isn't the back up because I already have a backup saved that I can restore from, I honestly don't know how, but I do, and it has all my apps. The problem is restoring it. I keep getting the "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "King". A duplicate file name was specified. With my 3G iPod touch, I did not have it named as "King". I had it as another name. I don't know if that helps, but as I said before, Backup-wise I'm okay for now. Restore-wise I'm not.
NOTE: Reinstalling iTunes doesn't help.
