Restoring my MacBook pro to a previous time using Time Machine
Hi I accidentally deleted some files from my MacBook pro but I used a seperate clean up software to delete them so I'm not sure where the orinal files where so I thought I'd just restore the whole HD. I have backups on my time machine external hard drive, but when I try to restore the whole HD to a time before the delete it says that I don't have all the permissions to restore and replace my HD. I am the administrator and should has permission to do anything. I've tried changing all the folders to read and write but the same message appears. Can anyone help please.
Apple doesn't make it obvious how to do that, unfortunately.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine. -

This weekend I had issues restoring my MacBook pro using Time Machine. I was left with question marks in the dock for the folloing apps in Bold, the others are not on the dock but they could not be found..
1. Safari
2. LaunchPad
3. Missing Control
4. Mail
5. System Preferences
6. Photo Booth
7. Terminal
8, Itunes
9. Disk Utility
10. iText Express
11. Notes
12. Maps
13. XCode
14. iPhoto
15. Calendar
They were not in Finder, and as the Lauchpad icon was not there I could not check there either. Spotlight was not showing them either. They simply were not there on the Mac.
I checked on Time Machine and they could not be found there either. I don't believe they were backed up by Time Machine in the first place. I do not have any programmes or applications excluded in the TM preferences.
Its interesting that all my 3rd party apps were there, all the missing ones are from the Maverics iOS.
I ended up having to reinstall Mavericks via a VERY SLOW internet connection and hey presto, everything came back to normal.
It was a very tense few hours as I thought I had lost the lot, photo's and itunes collections etc.
Time Machine is sold to us by Apple as the perfect solution to keep your data safe and recoverable.... Really?
I do like Apple products, but this has left me a little unsure about them now, its like the trust and confdence goes when you catch your child stealing and lying to you...The confidence will come back but I guess I will always be a little warey now..
Apple, please do something about this - I have paid through the nose for a robust system that I can rely on, not one that has aged me by 10 years...It appears only the applications where missing. So your own data were safe all the time. However...
There appears to be a bug in Time Machine that causes it to exclude items that aren't supposed to be excluded. To check if that is the case, you can find more information here: http://pondini.org/TM/D10d.html
It appears the bug is very difficult to reproduce, mainly because in most cases it is only discovered when people try to restore an existing installation. -
Just bought a used MacBook pro after my previous died. I want to migrate my applications, data, etc from a time machine backup of the old computer to the new. Will this affect, or overwrite the Apps., data, etc existing on the new machine?
No. Only those Apps that are not installed on the new will migrate over.

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords). What can I do?
First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it. -

Using the Time Machine backup to restore to your Mac will not delete other files you have on the Time Machine backup disk.
However, in general, it is not a good idea to store live files on a Time Machine backup disk. The Time Machine disk can fail just like any other disk. If it does it is no big deal for Time Machine. You purchase another drive and start another backup. However if that drive fails, the other files on it will be lost. So if you offload files onto an extenral drive, they should be on a non-backup drive. Then go into the Time Machine preferences and make sure that offload drive is not excluded from the list of volumes it will backup. -
Restore my macbook pro through time machine.
I wanted to restore my macbook pro as new, so I held down the command+r and deleted the partition. I then wanted to reinstall Lion through a time machine backup, but after a couple of hours my macbook pro went to the sleep mode, so it ditn't get to do the full reinstallment. Now all I get is a grey box telling me to restart my computer by holding down the powerbutton, but nothing happens as I do so. I have tried to shut it down and start it up holding down shift, I have tried to shut it down and turn it on and holding command, option, r and p but nothing works. Please help me

I had to restore my Macbook Pro from Time Capsule yesterday and now when I go to log in as my usual Admin, it says there is a FileVault error and my access is denied. I created another temporary Admin acct, but everything I had on my desktop, etc is "gone" I can look up the "drive' or wahtever it's called, but I can't access any of it. In the Directory Utility window, click the lock icon and authenticate. Select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Users from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Select the affected user account in the list. On the right is a list of properties and values. Select the property "HomeDirectory" and delete it by clicking the minus-sign icon directly below the property list. There are two such icons in the window. You want the one on the right, not the one on the left.
CAUTION: Do not click the minus-sign icon on the left, below the user list.
Then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the window. Quit Directory Utility.
CAUTION: There is no "undo" in Directory Utility. If you make a mistake and delete something in the Directory Editor that should not have been deleted, restore your whole system from a backup and start over. I have no other help to offer in that case.
Try again to log in as the affected user. If you can log in, you should find a file in the home folder with the name of the user and the filename extension "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle". Double-click that file. A disk image should open. Copy your files from that disk image to restore them.
I strongly suggest that you deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, then log out and log back in. Consider activating FileVault 2 if you want that kind of security.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above. -

Back up the entire system onto an external drive for the last time.
Locate the original install media that came with the Mac.
Boot off the media, start up Disk Utility.
If needed, repartitiion the internal drive to a single partition (i.e., get rid of BootCamp)
Format the internal drive.
If paranoid, do a Security Erase of the drive.
Quit Disk Utility, start the OS X installer
Install the full OS X with all the trimmings onto the internal drive
When the install finishes, shut it down. Do not restart, to allow new owner to customize via Setup Assistant.

A friend of mine wants to restore his Macbook Pro running SL but he doesn't have any disk anymore. I don't have any disk either but I was able to do a clean install by using Internet Lion Recovery aand an external hard drive.
No, not without a 10.6 installation disk. Lion doesn't use disks for installation, but Snow Leopard and all previous versions of Mac OS X do.

The only problem that I forsee is that some have reported problems getting machine-specific builds of Lion via Internet Recovery. Not sure if it's working yet or not. But you could give it a shot, I suppose. Basically what you want to do is 'prepare your computer for resale' - just like it came out of the box. Kappy, a pretty wonderful and very knowledgeable man, has tip for that which I have copied and will paste below:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
