Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.

No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

Boot from your Install Disc first off, then follow Pondini's directions freom here on...
On LEOPARD or SNOW LEOPARD, start up from your Install disc (or Software Reinstall drive on a MacBook Air).  Insert it and either wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up normally while holding down the "C" key. That takes a few minutes.
Select your language, then on the next screen, select Utilities from the top menubar:

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

  • If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes?

    I have two questions...
    1) If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes? (because I don't have them)
    2) Has anyone ever seen anything like this before on their computers?
The Apple Genius' were stumped by my laptop issues and said they'd never seen anything like it before and recommended I did a clean install. Below you can see my trash bin, and if you look at the "Empty" button it reads "N201" and then there's the "N39" to the left of it. You can also see these numbers over by the folder area--"SD5, SD6, SD7." But that's not all...
When I right click on items I see the numbers again. Instead of "Open with" I get "N152" and there's an "N35" and "LB1" towards the bottom.
I have no idea what's going on so I'm just going to do a clean install on my machine but I don't want to lose my apps. I don't have the original install DVDs for them anymore. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

You don't lose them.  You can always redownload them from the app store after you log back in with your Apple ID.
    "Buy, download, and even redownload.
You can install apps on every Mac you use and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own."

    Cannot get the Apple.. what?
Model and actual device you are talking about?
Apple covers a pretty huge range.. If you mean extreme.. did you reset it to factory and start over.. that is always necessary when you change a network. You cannot pick up a router from one home and network and plonk it into another and have it work.. aint gonna happen.
You also need to power down any pure cable modem for 20min or so to get it to forget the old MAC address that captured the IP so the Apple ??? has a chance to work.

  • Hard disc repair needed. how to start with the snow leopard dvd?

    Hi,
after a check with the apple hard disc program "festplattendienstprogramm" it found an error:
something like "invalid amount of file hard links". It suggests to boot from the installation dvd.
meanwhile I installed mac os lion, so I've got just the snow leopard dvd and tried to boot with holding down the C key before start up sound.
But the system always boots from the hard disc. Maybe it's a problem with the apple bluetooth keyboard?
holding down the c key didn't work (got the bt keyboard), and mac os lion is installed.

    - the forum ate my post -
    Summarizing:
Backup any data that you do not have a backup of. Disk repairs are not guaranteed. They can fail or be unrepairable requiring formatting the drive and a clean installation.
Verify the smart status in disk utility. Highlight the drive. Read the status on the bottom of the window.
Off the top of my head, I don't know that there is a free utility to read the number of errors and how close it.
There is a utility called smartreporter that can help keep an eye on your hard drive.
There is no guarantee the drive is about to fail or keep going for years; but it is suspect you have to start from the install disc to attempt a repair. Could be due to improper shut down.

  • Restore System with Time Machine?

It seems to be this SHOULD be easy - but in three hours I just haven't been able to figure it out.
How do I do a system restore with time machine?
I did a back up a week ago. Yesterday I had some kind of major glitch that messed up an unknown number of my files. I figured "that's okay, I'll just restore everything to last week and that will be fine." Except I can't seem to find out how to do that!
I have no idea how many files are affected, but last week it was all fine. I did a diagnostic and it says my hardware is fine. I did the safe boot start up and everything is supposed to be okay on my drive. But my files and software is still messing up - and I think if I can just put it back to last week, I'm fine.
I do not have a CD that works (I found one, put it in, and the system won't boot from it). I do have my backup drive. What do I do?

See if the instructions here work for you:
    http://pondini.org/TM/14.html
You really should get replacement installation disks from Apple Customer Service.  They will need the serial number of your MBP and there is a charge.
    Ciao.

  • Restoring macbook pro with time machine

I have a macbook pro and I since putting Leopard on it (Archive and install) I am having all kinds of applications crashing and freezing. I am making my first time machine back up right now. What I want to know is if after the back up is done I want to do a clean install of Leopard and the restore my data and applications.
Will I be able to restore all my applications as well as my data from time machine? Or will I have to go to all my applications websites and re-download the programs?
    Thank you
    Joe

    Joe,
With a complete Time Machine backup, you can completely restore everything. When you boot to the Leopard Install disk, and after you have used Disk Utility (from the installer's "Utilities" menu) to format (erase) your hard drive, you can use the "Restore From a Time Machine Backup" utility. Open this from the "Utilities" menu, just as you do Disk Utility. Obviously, you'll need the backup drive connected and powered on at the time.
This said, I'm not sure that you want to use this. If you have a damaged system, that damage will undoubtedly be reproduced in your Time Machine backup. There is even the possibility that the backup is not "viable" enough to be restored in this manner.
I recommend you give it a try, anyway. Restoring from a Time Machine backup takes considerably less time than a "normal" installation; you will only waste minimal time, if the restoration or the resultant installation fails.
If you do run into problems, you can reinstall normally (from the Leopard disk) and restore your files from the Time Machine afterward. In this case, I recommend that your applications be reinstalled again manually.

  • How do I restore lost emails with Time Machine?

I would like to know how I restore lost drafts that I had on my mail program 6.6 with Time Machine.
I forgot that when you restore the mail program (was buggy) it saves all your emails except for your drafts. So now I need to find all the drafts that were deleted with my Time Machine.
Where are the drafts store prior to when I have to delete my mail program because of bugs in it?
How do I find them once I launch Time Machine.  Can't recall where they are stored in my systems folder?
Thanks for any help regarding this.

    From Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
To restore individual files see Restoring specific files or folders.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
Hold down the Command and R keys at startup to start the computer from the Recovery system. The Recovery menu that appears includes the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.

  • Restoring my iMac with Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I was unable to install an Skype update on my Boot Drive and was shown an error saying that I did not have the necessary permissions to perform the operation. This error has occurred after I recently performed a clean installation of OSX.6.1 during which I partitioned the internal HD and created a Boot Drive for apps only and a Data Drive for everything else including User Accounts. I used Terminal to manually move the User Accounts. The computer was working correctly once I set up all my personal folders. Other app updates worked without error so I'm not sure what I did to initiate the error with the Skype update.
The first time I got an error citing permissions, after installing OSX.6.1, was from the external drive and the remedy I used was to open the Get Info window and “apply all privileges” for User (me). It took a long time to complete that operation as there was a lot of data on the external drive.
I tried this remedy with the Boot Drive for this Skype update before doing any research into the effect. The process of applying privileges was over in a few seconds as the Boot Drive only had 14 Gigs of apps including the OS. I shut down the iMac and restarted and the gray screen with the Apple logo came up and stayed on. The Snow Leopard boot time is usually just under 30 seconds but the gray screen just stayed on for more than 10 minutes and it was clear that it wasn't going to boot up.
I tried booting from the Leopard install disc and use Disk Utility to repair permissions but got the error: “The underlying task reported failure on exit.” I also tried the other options of verifying disc and repair disc and they ran successfully and reported “all ok” but did not help to get the computer started. I also used the Startup Disc selection to select the Boot Drive but get the same hanging result.
Time Machine has a full backup that was made just a few hours before I made my mistake. I have read Glenn Carter's tips for TM use. As I have two partitions on my HD I need to “select a destination” for TM to use but know this can't be right in my case as the whole drive is required and I need to restore the two partitions. Only the Data Drive is big enough to select and that will leave the other partition useless.
It looks like I may have to erase the internal HD with Disk Utility to allow TM to completely restore my computer. If I do this will TM be able to restore the clean internal HD with two partitions from my TM backup? The TM backup is small as it is just all the newly restored apps and User accounts, almost no data – just a few emails.
Does anyone know a remedy to this issue using Terminal to restore the correct permissions?
I think I understand my mistake – the OS can't see the Boot Drive because I removed the system's permissions to access.
    Thank you

    Hello again Pondini,
I just want to explain the reasons for partitioning the disc: I bought the iMac when Leopard was introduced to the market in 2007. That was my switch from 12 years of Microsoft **** where we always partitioned our drives out of necessity.
I carried some Windows habits with me to the Mac OS, the main one being intense scrutiny of the computer's performance. I was told not to bother about a drive partition for the iMac so I left the computer as it was but I noticed a small, slow drop off in performance over the last two years. I must say it was only barely noticeable and came from the testing of a large number of photo-editing apps. All the time I used Macaroni to maintain the computer. Macaroni works well.
During this time I was speaking to other people doing similar work and noticed that they had partitioned drives to achieve optimum performance. I understood that from the Windows point-of-view.
I had planned to do a clean installation of Snow Leopard as I think that if you upgrade your OS it should always be a clean installation. After doing some research I decided to go with the partition. It was clear that some people said it was not necessary.
Once my current setup is complete I am going to use this iMac for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop only so the setup will not change, no new apps or anything else...
It was through my inexperience that I made this mistake with the Boot Drive. Once corrected I should be good to go.
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • How to backup only the system with time machine?

    Hi,
I have an external disk, seagate, that I used to backup working files from an older Mac.... I got a new Mac mini and would like to backup the system.
I don't want to erase these old files.  Is it possible to only backup the system OS and installed software, with Time Machine I don't know if you would call this a bootable disk or the hard drive needs to be blank?

You should have a separate partition (or disk) for Time machine or it may at some point overwrite your other files because it makes hourly updated backups so it needs more and more room.

  • HT1338 How to restore iphoto photo with Time Machine?

I am trying to restore a single photo in iPhoto from Time Machine.
I open up iPhoto, then upen up Time Machine. When Time Machine launches, it opens up my desktop, not iPhoto.
I have seen videos of people doing this, but I cannot get Time Machine to open up iPhoto.
    What am I doing wrong?

Apple used to support restoration of photos via the iPhoto interface with Time Machine, but has halted this support. I believe the reason was the feature was corrupting people's libraries, but I cannot be certain. Your options here are to restore either the entire library or manually go into the library in the Finder and use Time Machine to browse through file histories that way. Alternatively you can access the Time Machine backup directly in the Finder and manually copy the needed files out of it (do not restore in this way, but instead copy to the Desktop and then re-import the image as a new photo).
