Restoring Ntfs read only in mac os x 10.4

Hai,
I using macbook 10.4.11, I installed nTFS-3G old version without reading the manual. After installing it, i lost my ntfs read only feature in my mac book.
How can i restore the ntfs read only in macbook.
Thank

Something is wrong then. It could be a damaged file table that is causing the updater to error out.
Boot to your OS X installation disk. Don't install OS X, but when the interface gives you the opportunity, go to the menu bar and run Disk Utility. Choose your hard drive in the left column and then press the button at the lower right to "Repair Disk". If it shows any errors, repeat the repair procedure until it comes up clean.
If there are any disk errors reported, and Disk Utility cannot repair it after three or four tries, you're going to have to use something more suited to the task. Disk Warrior is probably the best program available for that.
If Disk Utility reports no errors, then I would continue on with an Archive and Install of the OS. Make sure to use the option to preserve your settings. After the installation is complete, apply all available updates.

  • PC FORMATTED iPod read by MAC & PC?  MAC formatted iPod read only by MAC?

Is this how the formatting issue works? I'm looking to buy an iPod for a friend who (I think) has PC.....
Since I'm a mac person, I want to buy the gift, load some music on, and ship it off to the lucky recipient....but if they have a PC , will it be recongnized once it's plugged in?
    Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks.

Yes, that is how it works.

Okay, unless you restore your iPod while you're on the Mac, I believe it will still be formatted for a PC.
(You will not need to restore the iPod for transferring music to it on a Mac unless you want to upgrade the iPod's firmware on a Mac computer, then it will have to be Mac-formatted).
You see, when you recieve an iPod, it is shipped to you as a Windows-formatted iPod, probably since the majority of the population has PCs, and also, PC-formatted iPods are compatible for music transfer for a Mac also.
    Does that make sense?

  • MS Windows "Custom Folders" appears as Read Only in Mac

    Hi,
I'm new to Mac, and started copying my old PC data to an external drive, so I could access it in my MacBook, before reformating my PC.
I copied a lot of folders (around 100 Gb) and noted that some folders are "read only" in that external drive. I remembered my unix time checking for chmod/chwon attributes, but I didn't see anything different from read/write folders. I could note just one thing. This "read only folders" are folder that, in my PC, had "Custom Icons", or "Custom images" attached to it.
I tried a lot of chmod/chwon combinations, but Terminal always said I have no right (or something like that, I don't remember now), so I gave up and copied from "Shared Folders", FTP or "one by one", and now it appears to be Ok.
Does anyone already saw this issue? If yes, is there a way to "force" that folder to be read/write? I tried using Finder to Find folder/files that were readonly (so I could identify each one), but I din't find the option. Anyone knows how?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The external drive is already formated in FAT32. Only my old PC is formated with NTFS, and the problem itself is while accessing theses files/folder in the external drive, not the PC (I'm not accessing the PC directly).
FAT32 file system can't handle unix permissions and any file on such a drive will be listed as having full read+write access for everyone. However, if a file is read only in windows, it will be locked in OS X and there is absolutely no way to unlock it from OS X side short of reformatting the drive. You need to log into windows and unlock or delte the file from there.

  • My External Hard Drive shows Read only in mac but in windows its not

when I connect my WD HDD External to my mac book it shows that Ur EXT HDD is right protect and read ONLY, but when I switch to the windows os U can copy delete and any thing U want, how can I remove this issue from my HDD ? I want to copy to the HDD in mac but I cant

Your external HD is formatted with the NTFS file system.  OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.
To be compatible with OS X and Windows it would need to be formatted with the FAT32 file system.
Alternately you can install a 3rd party driver to give OS X the ability to write to the NTFS file system.  One of them is
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/ntfs3g.html
I don't know how well it works.
    There are other drivers available.

  • External Volume read only on Mac OS X server 10.5

My mac OS X Server 10.5.8 is having a FC volume is read only ,
What could br the issue ??

Same issue here. I even tried to import the cert directly into keychain. I did get the certificate to show up in server admin with the correct signed info, but when I assigned a service to the cert. It actually was handing out the old unsigned cert, so I removed it to try again. Now I cannot get the cert back in server admin at all, just in Keychain under SYSTEM. The self-signed certs only show up under My Keychains... It appears also that Server Admin will only see the certs that are located in MyKeychains. Anyone have any luck?

  • Copied files from external drive, now "read only" on Mac HDD

I recently moved a large amount of files from my old PC to my new Mac. I copied the files from WinXP to a USB hard drive, then connected the drive to my Mac. After I copied all the files to the Mac I noticed that the majority of them are set with permissions that say "You can only read this file". How do I take ownership of these files so I can delete/rename some of them?
    Thanks!

Select your file and open the information panel. By owner and access, change the permission.

  • Second SATA Drive Read Only

    Need some help:
I took my SATA Drive out of my Windows Computer (NTFS) 250GB, and put it into the second SATA bay of the G5. It had one jumper on the 3rd setting.
The G5 found it and it can read fine, but it is read only. nothing i do can erase, format, etc. Disk info says owner:no, permissions:only read, can be formatted:no, SMART Status not supported, pretty much locked. It shows up as a 232.9 GB WDC WD2500JD-00FYB0.
Any Suggestions on how to make writable/format? Is it a jumper issue?
Thanks for your help out there!

    According to "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75320"
"Warning: NTFS formatted drives cannot be used in a Macintosh (except as read-only with Mac OS X 10.,3 as noted above). If you attempt to use a NTFS formatted disk, upon starting up the Mac OS will prompt you to format the drive. Do not format the drive, doing so will erase the contents of the drive. If you have an NTFS formatted disk, you must use another method to transfer the data from the PC to the Macintosh".
Did you have this warning when you started up your G5 after installing the second drive ?
If yes you may have to shut down the computer, disconnect the second NTFS SATA drive, restart and shut down, reconnect and restart to reformat.
    Just a suggestion.
    Good Luck

  • Hard Drive formatted to read-only

I was trying to install XP Pro via bootcamp, and didn't realize that the disc had been switched w/a non-SP2 copy. When it was done, it tried to start installing again, and then I realized what had happened, so I took it out and tried to put Vista on it. Vista doesn't see the drive during install (but can browse it somehow), so it asks for a 'device driver' and won't continue. I tried to use the Mac system install disc to erase the disc, but it's now NTFS read-only and Disk Utility can't do anything (I even tried running Disk Utility via target disk mode off of another laptop). What else can I do? I was thinking that there could be a cmd prompt of some sort to change permissions, but I haven't found anything searching. Thanks!

Thanks, but the drive was hosed so much that nothing could be accessed remotely nor via install CD to do that. I ended up using the XP disc again, going into the cmd, reformatting the entire C: drive, then accessing the system remotely via Target Disk mode where I could finally erase it to format it in Journaled. Once I erased it, I was then able to reinstall the Mac OS off of the install disc.

  • HT2963 I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

I I have a 1 TG external drive that is formatted to Windows NTFS and is read only, how do i get it to read and write on my Mac OS X 10.6.3?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Why is external hard drive read-only on one Mac, but read/write on another?

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive.  I bought it to be compatible with both Windows and Mac, which it currently is.  It works just fine on my PC and my MacBook.  However, recently, I bought a MacBook Pro.  The Seagate drive shows up as read only on the MacBook Pro, though it is read/write on my MacBook.  It's formatted NTFS, yes, but it already works on my MacBook.  What's going on here?

Nope, one of the selling points of the drive was that it came ready to work with both Mac and Windows (the product description says there is an NTFS drive installed for use on Mac).  No hacking or installing on my part.
But I think I figured it out.  Apparentely, Mavericks comes installed with something that does not allow it to write NTFS no matter what (well, unless you go through a whole bunch of technical stuff to rewrite the software).  My old MacBook was Leopard.
I'll just reformat the external hard drive for Mac, and if I ever need to use it on a Windows, I'll install HFS+ Explorer on the Windows.  Oh well.

  • External Hard Drive "read only" when connected to mac.

    Hi
I have a Lacie external hard drive, formatted FAT, which has always worked fine on our macbook pro until the macs internal drive crashed and had to be replaced. now, when i connect the lacie i can access everything, but cannot move it around or add new folders, etc. under permissions it says "read only" how do i change this? when i connect to a pc it works normal.
the macs software is OS X Version 10.5.8.
im sure that its a really simple answer but i dont know enough about mac to find it...

NTFS is read only on OS X. there are drivers to make it writable, so you could try to get those to work or you can copy the data off & reformat to FAT 32.
if you want to try the drivers: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24481

  • NTFS External Hard Drive now read only

    Hello Everyone,
For months I have been connecting a NTFS 1 TB Phantom Labs external hard drive to my mac book, to access my music collection, as well as store additional large files. Today, however, I found my external hard drive to be "read only," rather than read and write. Interestingly, the folder where I keep my music, also includes the lock image as the external hard drive icon.
When I look in Disk Utility, the Phantom Drive is originally listed as read/write. However, the mounting point, named disk2s1 is listed as read only.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this situation and return to the read/write status I originally enjoyed?
    Thanks.

I have got the exact same problem!!
have a 320 seagate ext HD formatted as NTFS that I have been using for the last 3-4 months that suddenly became read only.
I'm running macfuse with 3G to read and write to the drive and prior to this have never had an issue.
Have another ext HD formatted as NTFS that reads and writes fine. I have tried disk utility but verify and first aid are greyed out for the seagate drive, One minute I was writing to my drive fine and next time I plugged it in Read only (yes I ejected properly as always)
Any ideas?? I hope it's not a re format and start again..
