Restoring offline log file

Dear Friends,
I am facing problem to restore last backuped offline log file.
I have succefully completed homogeneous system copy (i.e. SAP ECC 6.0 with Oracle 10g on Wndows 2003 platform) through backup/restore procedure & system comes to consistent stage & able to login properly.
Now I want to restore other offline redolog files in the above system.
e.g. Previously I have imported log sequence upto 750. Now I want to recover logfiles from log seq. 751 onwards.
Pls. help to recover other offline log files after system is consistent.
Thanks in advance,
Abhishek

Not possible.
Once you opened your database (and logged in successfully), no more recover actions can be done.

  • Restore Backup log file back SID .log and be*****.ant

    Dear all,
I have to restore sap oracle online backup from source server to target server. We have taken the backup of source server on tape. Now we have to restore that tape backup on target server. We don't have back<SID>.log and be*****.ant with us.
How can we restore the back<SID>.log and be****.ant tape first by which we can start the restore online backup on target server or without this back<SID>.log and be****.ant can we restore the backup on other location ( which i tried but not working, it is asking for back<SID>.log file.
    Thanks
    Ward

    Hi Ward,
As long as you have complete oracle datafiles, restore without logfiles can be done.
    1. As a precauition, copy all /oracle/<SID> to a safe place during offline state (SAP down, Oracle down)
    2. Replace each datafile from tape to the current datafile location. e.g /tape/sr3.data1 -> /oracle/<SID>/sapdata1/sr3_1/sr3.data1
    3. Make sure that archive logs is complete from the point where you start online backup.
    4. sqlplus /nolog
    5. startup mount
    6. You will likely found error with controlfile. Replace all oracle controlfiles from tape backup, then repeat the startup
    7. recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
    8. choose the archive where you want the point of restore
    Good luck

  • Restore brbackup log file

    Hello everybody,
Do you know how it is possible to restore the brbackup log file with brrestore in the case where this file has been removed at the filesystem level ?
In fact, this file (named *.aff) is mandatory by brrestore option -b. But, if this file no longer exists, what to do ?
    Thank for your help...
    Daniel Ouin

The backup is made by brbackup.
The result of brbackup is logged is a file *.aff.
So, brbackup backups this file at the end of the backup session.
If the disk is lost, we no longer have any .aff file to give as -b parameter of the tool brrestore.
In that case, we cannot restore any file.
Is there a way to run brrestore or any other br* tool without giving this file as parameter ?

  • While Recovery  log files are not displayed in recovery mode

    Hi Folks,
These days i am performing backup recovery testing for maxdb.
    Maxdb 7.7
I am having one doubt please help me out to clear that.
    Scenario is like this:
I have taken a  complete Data Backup.
After that some data inserted and one log file created .Some transaction's are in log area (Online Logs) not written to the log file(Offline logs).
When i am performing recovery using recovery mode in that mode it is not showing the log files those are required to be restored at the time of recovery.
    [recovery_mode|http://www.freeuploadimages.org/images/fdsnjrndfbr9ftfnco9.jpg]
After recovery it is showing me the data as it was their before the recovery.
When i am going with recovery with initialization option in that it is showing the logs those will be restored while performing the recovery.
    [recovery_with_initilization|http://www.freeuploadimages.org/images/emupbqyhfunqe9q00yd3.jpg]
After recovery with initialization it  had recovered until it found the data in logs.
My doubt is why in recovery mode it is not showing the log file's those are required to be recovered as it is showing in case of recovery with initialization.
In Recovery mode is it not recovering from the offline log files.....?
If yes than from where it is restoring the data inserted in DB  after the complete backup.
As per my understanding in recovery mode it will perform recovery in the below steps.(Increment backup's i am not taking)
    1.Complete Data Recovery.
2.All the log files will be applied.(Offline logfile)
*3.Log's available in the Log Area will be applied.(Online Log file) *

    Hello Sahil,
please check the documentation and the expert sessions before trying out this stuff.
The reason for MaxDB not asking for any log backups after you've modified a few records is, that we don't throw away the log data when a log backup is made.
Instead we keep track of which log information is still available for recovery in the log area and use this during recovery, instead of trying to get the data from the log backup.
As soon as the log data is lost (because it's overwritten or the log area was deleted as it is the case for a recovery with initialization) MaxDB of course has to ask for the log backups - and it does so.
But really - go and check the documentation and the expert sessions (maybe also my own blogs on this topic) about this.
    regards,
    Lars

  • Restoring archive log after cold backup

    Hello forums users,
I read many thing on this topic but I didn't find the good answer.
I performed a cold backup each sunday.
My database is in ARCHIVE LOG mode.
Is it possible to restore ARCHIVE LOG files after restoring COLD backup?
    Sunday : cold backup
Monday : new archive log have been created since cold backup
    Tuesday : same as Monday
Wednesday : I would like to restore to Monday 22:00 for example
Can I restore cold backup + apply archive log until Monday 22:00 ?
    Regards,
    Guillaume

recover database using backup controlfile until cancel|time|logseq|scn
will do this and prompt you for the archivelogs.

  • Log files can be applied after an offline backup is restored?

When reading the Admin Guide I see above possibility.
I guess in that case the offline backup must be done in the Database Maintenance Mode: QUIESCE.
I think if the offline backup is done after the DB is shutdown, no log files can be applied.
Would you please confirm and share your experience on this?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Jennifer,
only to complete the answer of Jens, or "say" it less complex:
1.) Yes you could roll forward an offline backup. DB2 always end in rollforward pending state after a restore independent of the backup type (online | offline). In case of an offline backup you could complete the restore without logs, otherwise not.
2.) The offline backup is done in a special mode, it is neither online nor quiesced. Nobody can log on to the database as long the offline backup is running. To start the offline backup, you have to deactivate the database as described by Jens.
    Best regards

2014-09-12 10:50:03.18    *** Error: An error occurred while processing the log for database 'EAPDAT'.  If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.
An error occurred during recovery, preventing the database 'EAPDAT' (8:0) from restarting. Diagnose the recovery errors and fix them, or restore from a known good backup. If errors are not corrected or expected, contact Technical Support.
    RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
can this happened due to data base or log file corruption, if so how can i check on that to verify the issue
Its not necessary if the issue is with network it would happen every day IMO it basically happens when load on network is high and you transfer log file which is big in size.
As per message database engine was not able to restore log backup and said that you must rebuild log because it did not find out log to be consistent. From here it seems log corruption.
Is it the same log file you restored ? if that is the case since log file was corrupt it would ofcourse give error on wehatever server you restore.
Can you try creating logshipping on new server by taking fresh full and log backup and see if you get issue there as well. I would also say you to raise case with Microsoft and let them tell what is root cause to this problem
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it

  • How to restore cold backup + archived log files

    Hi,
Suppose I take a cold backup on 18th. After that I have four days of archived log files. if the database crashes on 5th day, I have to restore the 18th cold back + 4 days of archived log files. How do I restore since it is a cold backup and I cant do incomplete recovery.
    can I use
Recover database ( with 18th cold backup) in mount state and apply archived logs.
    Prabhath

The details of how you perform forward recovery using a cold backup depends on
    1- rman or manual backup
2- using current or backup control file
3- if rman, recovery catalog or no recovery catalog
4- if full database recovered or only a few files
Each of these conditions will affect what is known to Oracle and what needs to be done. For example if you restored the entire cold backup including the control file then Oracle would see a consistent database and not need to perform recovery so you would need to startup mount and tell the database to perform recovery using a backup control file. If using rman and no recovery catalog you might need to catalog some of the archived redo logs, etc....
It is advisable to consult the Backup and Recovery manuals before attempting recovery for any new scenario.

  • Restore in noarchivelog mode ( redo log files have been dropped )

1, A full backup taken using RMAN is available on disk.
2, The current control files were NOT damaged and do not need to be restored.
3, All data files are damaged .
4, The database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
    I restore database :
    1. RMAN> STARTUP MOUNT
    2. RMAN> RESTORE DATABASE;
    3. RMAN> recover database;
in this step , I got the information about needing redo log files ; but the redo log
files have been dropped , what should i do ?
    else
I want to know there is the command 'recover database using backup control file'
    in rman or not ?
    Tks

Possibly loss of data (because information in online redo logs is lost):
    recover database until cancel;
    (cancel immediately)
alter database open resetlogs; (to build a new set of redo logs)
It's not necessary to use a backup controlfile here.

    Hello Subbu,
    > I have taken backup yesterday monrning in Archive log mode but have lost all the archive log files.
You mean you have taken an online backup and lost all your archive log files after that online backup?
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
Error: ORA-01113: file 1 needs media recovery
    ORA-01110: data file 1: 'E:\oracle\'<SID>\sapdata1\SYSTEM_1\SYSTEM.DATA1'
    SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
ORA-00279 : change 26627919 generated at DATE TIMEneeded for thread 1
    ORA-00289 : Suggestion E:\ORACLE\<SID>\ORAARCH\<SID>ARCHARC03020_0683715008.001
ORA-00280: change 266277189 for thread 1 is in sequence #3020
To perform a recovery with an online backup you will need all archive log files until the end of the online backup. If you have lost them you are not able to recover (or open) your database in a consistent state.
So the only suggestion we can do is:
You need the archive log files that were created during the online backup to perform an incomplete recovery ... if they are gone you can not restore your database.

    Stefan

  • BRARCHIVE backup for high volume offline redo log files on Standby Database

    Hi All,
We are through with all of Standby database activity, also started applying the offline redo log files on the Standby site.
The throughput is not utilizing the actual available bandwith.
So we are not able to copy the offline redo files on time, as the offline redo files are piling up on the Production side.
My query is how we can parallely copy the offline redo log files on the DR site (ie. 4-5 redo files at a time).
    Kindly guide for the same.
    Regards,
    Shaibaz

    hi,
    I have one doubt.
On other server (r3qas) the Umask settings are as followed
    User     UMASK value
    <sid>adm          077
    ora<SID>           077
    root                   077
    Running SAP System :   SAP R3 4.6C
    Running DBMS          :  Oracle 9.0
    Operating System      :- HP_UX
On this system The new offline redo log files are created with 600 permissions. There is not a problem here, while taking the backup. I checked last "r3qas-archive" backups. There, i have not found any single error related to permissions, or any others (something like, Cannot open /oracle/RQ1/../.........dbf).
If everything is working fine, with this umask setting on this server, then, what's going wrong with the BW Quality server, which have the same umask settings (also others) for all the concerned users, as mentioned above.

    Bhavik Shroff

  • RESTORE ARCHIVELOG ALL VALIDATE; - returns log file names

    Environment:
Oracle 11.2.0.3 EE on Solaris 10.5
RMAN using control file as repository.
My archive logs are going to /arch/<SID>. During a time of unforeseen high activity the directory was filling up and some of the files had to be move to a different mount point. I have since done several Level 0 incremental backups including (plus) archivelogs.
    My RMAN archivelog deletion setting is: CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO BACKED UP 1 TIMES TO DISK;
I have since begun to run more frequent archive log backups to keep the mount point cleaner.
Since I have several successful Level 0 backups including archivelogs, I manually deleted the archived logs on the secondary mount point.
    I registered the logs in the secondary mount point using REGISTER ARCHIVELOG START IN '/xxxx';
I then ran a CROSSCHECK ARCHIVELOG ALL; to update the control file repository.
When I query the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view I see many entries for my deleted log files with a STATUS = 'X' (Expired) and a BACKUP_COUNT = 0.
    I ran DELETE EXPIRED ARCHIVELOG ALL;
Now when I query the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view I see many entries with blank name column for the SEQUENCE# in my list and with a STATUS = 'D' (Deleted) and a BACKUP_COUNT = 0.
When I run a RESTORE ARCHIVELOG ALL VALIDATE; it returns a long list of my deleted files with:
RMAN-06025: no backup of archived log ... to restore
OK, enough background. My question is how do I get RMAN to not look for my deleted files since I have several good backups?
I realize my deletion policy says the files have to be backed up once to disk, which according to the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view they are not, but I was hoping since I ran the CROSSCHECK RMAN would not even be concerned with them.
    Many thanks for any advice!!
    -gary

Thanks for the help! Square brackets! Doh!
I changed the SQL just a bit. I have only one (1) thread and the primary database was running for several months before the standby was implemented so there are over 3500 sequence#'s in the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view for the Primary (DEST=1) that are not in the Standby (DEST=2).
Here's the SQL I ran, using the SQUARE brackets! :-)
    SELECT SEQUENCE#
    FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG
    WHERE DEST_ID=1
    MINUS
    SELECT SEQUENCE#
    FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG
WHERE DEST_ID=2It appears to me the Standby is accepting and applying the archived logs from the Primary based on looking at the most recent archived log sequence#'s.
I'm just trying to get rid of the entries in the RESTORE ARCHIVELOG VALIDATE; command output.
I don't have an RMAN Repository but am using the control files at the moment.
Any other suggestions are very welcomed!!
    Thanks again!

If you have a cold backup (database shutdown properly) without the redo logs, change this :
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOGto
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOGYou have to change the NORESETLOGS to RESETLOGS for Oracle to recreate the online redo logs.
