Restoring Old Apps on new drive

I purchased a new HD for my mac and I've already installed the OS, but I want to restore my old documents and apps to the new drive. How do I do this?

If you have a full Time Machine backup, you can restore your *entire system* to the exact state it was in at the time of the last (or any other) backup. See item #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Or, since you've already installed Leopard, you can use it's normal "set up" procedure, then towards the end, where it asks if you already have a Mac, you can choose to "migrate" from the backups, as detailed in the *Erase, Install, & Migrate* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine post at the top of this forum.
Or, you can use the Migration Assistant app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Just start it up and follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Restore old apps on new phone?

Just got a new iPhone 5s. The old one went for a little swim.
The App Store knows what apps I used to have installed; they have a different "download" button than all the others do. Therefore, there's a list up there somewhere.
Is it possible to tell this thing to just install everything that I used to have installed? It is infinitely tedious to wrack my brain remembering them all and then painstakingly peck each name into the tiny little box.
iTunes has an "Apps" thing but all it has is the home screen "page" layouts, and the only icons on them when I first plugged the phone in were stuff that came with the OS. As I install more, they appear on the computer screen. Is there some option I should have had checked in order to enable iTunes to keep track of what was installed?
Also, sync by wifi is enabled, but broken: When I unplug the cable, the phone vanishes from iTunes. Is this no longer supported?

One way to do it on the phone -- Open App Store, tap Updates at bottom right, tap Purchased at top, tap Not on This Phone, tap download symbol (cloud with down arrow) to the right of each app.

Got a new phone.  Took pics on vacation with new phone.  Wanted to sync old phone with new phone.  Restored old phone to new phone, not realizing it would erase new phone content.  Is there any way to get that info back?  Thought i had performed a back up, but am unable to find it.  HELP

With a backup yes, no backup then no.

  • Can't sync old apps to new iphone

I have got an iphone 4s to replace a faulty iphone 4. When I got the new one I did restore as (old name) My old apps appear on screen in itunes ...
But despite attempting to sync they won't go to my new phone. What am i doing wrong?

In iTunes, when you select your phone, you should see a tab for Apps.  Check the Sync Apps box on that page.  If you don't have many apps, you can also download directly to your phone by opening the App Store, tap Updates, and then Purchased (at top of screen).

  • Restoring from DVD to new Drive.

Hey, I new my hard drive on my laptop was bailing so i backed up everything to DVD from my iTunes. Now it wont restore to the new drive. What do do.?

You can't make the Mac OS X installer boot and run from a hard drive for the operating system. It is not designed to work that way. If you wish to backup a system and not have to reinstall from CD, use a clone method of your existing working installation to hard drive*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
While a method has been made to make a duplicate Mac OS X installer disc, it isn't always able to work*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
Not to mention any copy you make is for your own personal use only, unless the license you got says otherwise. Read licenses carefully.

  • HELP!!! CAN'T RESTORE OLD CATALOG TO NEW HARD DRIVE

    July 12, 2010
    Hello,
Thank you for any help you can give with this rather desperate problem.
I have installed a replacement hard drive in my Dell Windows Vista laptop and reloaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0.  I am unable to reconnect Elements with my old photo organizer catalog.
Thus the system says I have Elements installed, with a catalog with zero photos in it. When in fact I have 12,000 fotos all captioned, dated and tagged for the Elements organizer.
Elements HELP has nothing about reconnecting to an old photo catalog.
Is it possible (???) that Elements does not keep the catalog separate from the program itself – so that when the program itself is lost in the switch to a new hard drive, the catalog is also lost (unless the user made a backup somewhere)?
    Anyway, here’s what happened:
I had made a fairly recent backup of the catalog to an external hard drive, so I copied that backup onto my new hard drive. Then in the Elements Organizer, I clicked on File; Restore Catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive. In the window that popped up, I directed it to the backup file (Backup.tly) and specified a location for restoring files and catalog. Then I clicked on Restore.
Up came a window that named one of my 12,000 fotos and said these approximate words “File already exists, do you want to overwrite it?”. I finally said Yes, and then it went on to another of my 12,000 fotos and asked the same question. I assume it planned to go through all 12,000 fotos, but I can’t imagine why.
But instead of continuing, I then got a window that said, “Error encountered while restoring catalog. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade to the latest available firmware for your specific disc drive before trying again.” (By the way, all my other programs are working fine on the new hard drive.)
I sure hope someone out there can tell me what’s going on. Thank you so much.
    Don

You copied the backup onto your new hard drive? Yes or no? Where was it before?
Then did you try to restore to the exact same location where you placed the copy?
HEre is the proper way to restore a catalog: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402894.html
By the way ... you say: "Elements HELP has nothing about  reconnecting to an old photo catalog." I disagree.
You say: "Is it possible (???) that Elements does  not keep the catalog separate from the program itself" not only is it possible, but Elements does indeed keep the catalog separate from the program itself.

  • Restore Old info on New Hard Drive

    Greeting,
I recently sent in my Powerbook G4 (Tiger) to the depot center in order to get my screen fixed (screen was completely dark). The good news is, they fixed the screen and upgraded my hard drive. The bad news is, there is nothing on the updated hard drive.
Prior to sending the unit out, I did two backups to an external drive:
    1. Backed up the entire drive using .mac backup utility
    2. Created a clone using disk utility
(these were the only two options I had, since I could hardly see the screen and I have used these utilities before)
My first question is, what would be the best way to restore the new hard drive with the backups that I have?
My second question is, I briefly powered up the unit and saw the welcome screen. I assume that I will have to go through the set-up again in order two complete either of the above options. Is this correct?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Connect the external drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the OPTION button until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the large right arrow button.
After startup use Disk Utility to clone the external drive to the new internal drive:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Backup & Restore - Old Machine to New

New prospective laptop will have Window7 (W7) 64-bit & old one has W7 with 32-bit ; I'm not sure if this is the way I should be looking at it , but it seems like I'd need to backup everything on the old machine but then restore everything except the old operating system, W7 32-bit ; in addition to my own data files I'd also want to retain Office, Norton, Printer software, etc. - problem is I don't know where the operating system resides and so I don't know how I would screen it out .
I have an external hard drive to hold the backed up files and it looks like Windows backup, for example, gives you the option to pick the files to be restored ; using the Lenovo backup utility could also be a possibilty.
I'm sure many others have done this when upgrading their computers and others in this audience may have much more computer insight than I and so any insights or suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated .

In one word: you'll need to reinstall your applications and might be able to move user data (profiles) to the new OS environment.

  • Restoring old backup on new computer with new phone

I wasn't prepared, but I backup up my wife's iPhone 4 on my laptop and then we went out to get her the iPhone 5. Came home, plugged in the new phone to restore, but said I needed the latest version of iTunes (11.0.1). But I can't download the new iTunes because I'm running 10.5.8 on this antique iBook.
So I copied my backups to a hard drive, then transferred them to my work laptop (which is running 10.7.3) and downloaded the new version of iTunes.
So where do I want to put the old backup so that iTunes will recoginize it? The "RESTORE BACKUP" button is currently grayed out.
Also, I've never had any isses in the past, so I've never had to restore. Is there anything else I should be aware of?
My wife is about to kill me over this little deal. Help please.

Hey mate... well I never use migration assistant cos i always like to have a totally new system on the new computers without the quirks of the last one.
Can you use migration assistant once you JUST to get hold of the Address Book or do you also need to import a whole bunch of other stuff... I just don't know cos I have never used it.
    Thanks heaps,

  • Should i run disk utility check after a restore onto a brand new drive?

My hard drive died on my daughter's macbook, just replaced it and did a restore.
i am wondering if i should do any disk utility check(permissions or repair) on a new hard drive because i have restored a time machine backup onto it.
I say this because any issues on the backup files are now placed onto a new hard drive.

    Kappy wrote:
It can't hurt to repair permissions. Most likely you'll get a long stream of stuff most of which is irrelevant and can be ignored. If there are any repair issues this will fix them. Be sure to run DU from the system you just installed. No need to boot from an installer disc.
BTW, did you properly prep the drive? Partitioned GUID, Mac OS Extended, Journaled format, and one pass Zero Data?
I did partitiion the drive guid, os extended, journaled. but i dont remember a choice on the onepass zero data but i assume it happened with the partitioning.
i understand no need to boot from the disc for permission check but if i do a verify or repair of the disk, then dont i have to boot from the install disc?

  • Restoring old data onto new iPhone 4S

I had an iPhone 4 and just got the 4S, but when I plugged the 4S into my mac it registered as a new phone and didn't ask to restore it from my old one. How do I get my old data on this new phone?

Hi, I'd been researching re: restoring from Back-up on my iPhone 4 and it all says "Connect iPhone to iTunes, in Left column of iTunes under devices, control click or option click or command click, it is one of those, your new iPhone's name. A menu will drop down, select Restore from Backup"....
My question is.. How come the Restore from Backup is not showing when right clicking on my iPhone.
Any idea why is this happening and is there any way that I can restore my newly upgraded iPhone?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Downloading iTunes Store old apps to new computer

I just recenly bought a new iMac and I was wondering how I might auto download all the apps and music I have purchased to my new iTunes. I want to sync my iPhone to my new computer, but I don't want to erase all the apps that are on there. However, when I log into my iTunes account, it doesn't seems to recognize and/or auto download all the stuff I've purchased in the past. Is there a way to make this happen? I tried transfering all my settings from my old Mac to the new one, but I am not having much luck with that at the moment. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks for any info and have a great day.

doesn't seems to recognize and/or auto download all the stuff I've purchased in the past
    Because it won't.
You need to copy the files from your old computer or from the backup you made to move to the new computer.
