Restoring Old Emails

I would like to transfer emails from an old account to my new one. All the sent and trashed emails. The problem is that I only have the actual MBOX folders backed up. They aren't in the Mail application anymore. I have the mbox folder with the messages and the info.plist file.
Does anyone know how I can get these back into mail?

First try Mail>File>Import.
If that doesn't work, the individual .emlx files can be used.
Import emlx to mbox, See if this helps...

  • How to restore old emails from Outlook to Mac Mail?

I have recently configured my email account (server type POP3) on Mail. It has retrieved my emails from last few weeks. However the older emails are missing. I was using Outlook and Mozilla thunderbird as email clients on Windows computer. I do have a backup of the data from windows computer on external hard drive. Can someone explain my how to I restore those old emails to the newly configued mac Mail account?

I had about 7500 emails, and they converted OK...took awhile because each one has to be converted, but it finished fine.
Although you can export from multiple Outlook folders, Mac Mail doesn't have a very slick importer for multiple mailboxes.  So, you'll need to export the mailboxes from Outlook (which will create 25 different files, each full of email), and then import each of those into Mail. In my case, Mail created a separate folder for each exported file, but the folders all descended from the root folder (not nested), so I had to create my own nesting.  This is more a limitation of the mbox standard that Apple uses than it is a limitation of Mac Mail itself, from what I read.
    Happy new year!

  • How do I restore old emails from recovered data after hard drive crash?

Hi all - I used data rescue II to recover data from a crashed hard drive - seems to have worked pretty well, as the file structure seems to be mostly intact - now I'm trying to find the old emails and get them back in my inbox/sent mailboxes where they belong - any help is surely appreciated - thanks

    Hi Tommybanjo.
Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.

  • I recently purchased a new Iphone 5C and want to give my Iphone4S to my husband to use. An old email id that no longer exists keeps popping up and I cannot restore the 4S to factory settings so he can use it as his own. Any suggestions?

I recently purchased a new Iphone 5c and gave my 4s to my husband to use.  However an old email address of mine keeps popping up that no longer exists and I don't know what the password was
and I cannot restore the 4s to factory settings.  Is there any resolution for this?

Find My iPhone Activation Lock- Removing a device from a previous owner’s account
The problem is covered in the above links. Unless you know the Apple ID and password used to set up the Find My Phone lock originally, then the phone is useless. If you have proof of ownership and that you are the original purchaser, then you can ask Apple to release it from the activation lock.

  • I can't restore my phone because iCloud under old email address

Tried updating phone last night and for some reason it stopped and froze on the plug into iTunes sign. Done this and after 3 hours it finally got recognised by iTunes. This morning I tried to restore phone but iCloud is under old email address and won't let me log in because password can not be remembered. Tried resetting password but it's saying my DOB is incorrect, which it isn't!
Please someone help as I'm pulling my hair out and need all my details back on phone for work. Xx

    Hello Catmac82,
It sounds like the date of birth you are entering is returning as incorrect when you are trying to reset your password. You can also answer your security questions to reset the password as well:
If you know the answers to your security questions
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    Click "Reset your password."
Enter your Apple ID and click Next.
Select "Answer security questions" as your authentication method. Click Next.
Select the birth date associated with your Apple ID, then click Next to begin answering your security questions.
After answering your security questions, you will be asked to enter and confirm your new password. Click Reset Password when done.

  • Restored my iPad marking all old emails as unread

I restored my iPad. Now my hotmail email account is downloading all my old emails and marking as unread. Is there any way to stop this? Thanks

I am having a very similar problem on my E71 on v400 firmware.
Sycing still works but since yesterday lots of old emails from various dates in various folders have become showing as unread. Giving me a notification on every sync for about an hour as more and more mails were marked as unread.
I'm currently going through the mails and marking them as read and hoping this doesn't happen again.

  • I changed my email address for iTunes & iCloud, but my new phone keeps asking for me to enter the apple id password for an old email to use for store purchases. What do I do to restore my backup to my new phone?

Im trying to load a icloud backup and I deleted everything from my new phone but now it wants an apple id password from an old email address.  What do I do?

  • I have a new email address and my old email keeps coming up on icloud when trying to update apps and i don't know the password or security questions for the old email. I can sign in with my apple id which is tied to another email but not itunes how to fix

I have an apple id and it has my current email attached to it. however when i go to update apps it's asking for the password for an old email. I no longer have the old email and can't use it. when I go to icloud on my ipad it asks for the password for old email. it doesn't allow me to change the old email to current. when i go to reset it i can't remember the password or security questions for the old email so it doesn't let me go any further. How do I fix this? Do i need to call apple support?

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

The iPhone is linked to the iCloud account and Find My iPhone
The device can display a different Apple ID or iCloud account then it's linked to.
The way to check this is iCloud.com
Get signed in with you Apple ID/iCloud account and password
      Select the Find My iPhone
      Select the "All Devices"
      Select the device
Wipe and remove it from the account
      Restore the device

  • TS3899 When sending an email using my iphone it always goes to an old email address and not the address set up in settings

I have removed an email address from my Iphone and have added a new one. My new one has been set up in the settings as the default account. When trying to send an email the phone always asks for a password for the old email address and will not use the new address. How do I get rid of the old address and use the new one? I have used the delete account to remove the old email address.

Try chnaging the Default Account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
You can also try to Reset All Settings from Settings > General > Reset.
If neither of those work, try restoring the iPhone.

  • I had a data migration done from old iMac to new iMac, how do I use that file to find my old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

I recently had a data migration from old iMac to new iMac 11.2
How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

  • How can I delete an old email address from autofill?

I have an old, (email address that is not in my address book) that is constantly showing up in my autofill when I want to send an email and it is driving me nuts.  I've tried restoring my phone; clearing prevous receipents list.  Can anyone please help??????

The only way to erase this data is to restore your phone as a new device in iTunes, NOT from backup. All data on your phone will be erased, including these email addresses. Follow this by syncing your iTunes content & other data back to your phone. You have to decide if it's worth going through this or just living with it.

  • How do I delete an old email account from my system

I was asked to update a password to our company email account and I updated.  Then I had to update the password on my iphone.  Now my iphone won't send any emails out because it is asking for an update to an email account that was never associated with this iphone (the email account was from a former employer).  It must have been restored or synced to my iphone or tied to iTunes through syncing.  I deleted the old employer phone from itunes when I left the job and purchased a new iphone.
But now my new iphone is not sending emails because it says that the old email account does not recognize the new password.  And there is no old email account to delete.  I've looked in my itunes acccount to try to delete there as well and can find nothing to delete from the old account.

Very interesting, thank you for the update.
I would next reset the network settings on the phone, in case there is some info there that is stuck and causing the issue:
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
I would also check these locations to see if the account is signed in anywhere else as an Apple ID in your Settings:
    iCloud
    iTunes & App Stores
    Messages
    FaceTime
    Game Center
If not I would as a last resort, backup your iPhone with this article:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
And restore it from your backup with this article and test the issue:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
If the issue persists when restored, then restore it as a new device and test the issue to help isolate the data in the backup.

  • How do I get old emails from Time Machine into a new Mail?

I have (I hope) email data in Time machine as of April 8  which I can't figure out how to get into my newly reinstalled version of Mail.
I took over my brother-in-law's iMac on April 8, and closed his User ID, saving it in a .dmg file.  Now that he has a new computer, he would like his old emails, so I reactivated his user ID, and reinstalled his email accounts in Mail as of May 27.  When I look at the Time Machine Backups drive, there is a data folder for April 8, but when I open my newly re-installed Mail and click on Time Machine it only goes back to May 27.
Is there a way to get at the April 8 data?
    Thanks,
    jrguest1

I set up an admin account for myself, logged on to it, and then followed the procedure in the help file to delete his account, saving it as a .dmg file.  Then, when he asked for his old emails, I followed the procedure in the help file to restore a deleted user account and copied the contents of the .dmg into it.
I'm not entirely confident I got the restoration sequence right, since I find the order of steps in the help file confusing. But everything except the Mail data seems to be recovered.
Another source of trouble may be the email account settings:  when I opened Mail under his log-on, there were no accounts set up: I recreated them using his email address and password, but Mail may well be treating these as new accounts, rather than re-opened old accounts.
    Thanks, John
