Restoring OLD Firefox-Sync to new HD - all I am offered is creating NEW FF-S!

Firefox Hilfe for FF-Sync 19.9.2011 13:45
HD on my notebook crashed, so all the Firefox-Sync settings have been lost - well, at least locally. But what I regarded as a simple task of re-connecting online to grab my OLD FF-Sync Profile has proved impossible.
Could this be due to the update to 6.02? I had 5.00 before the HD crash.
I have the FF-Sync Name & Password - but ALL I am offered is a new account. I have set the new notebook's HD as a new device. But then I'm confronted with keys I have to enter - and, of course, this would give me a NEW FF-Sync account.
How can I revive my old (& saved!) FF-Sync settings?
In the hope that somebody can relieve me of my misery....

Q 1 & 2:
Partitioning is really a personal decision based primarily on what you do with your machine. There's really no RIGHT answer, just opinions. A typical OS X installation takes 10-20 GB of disk space, but that varies greatly depending on what you store in your users folder (music, photos, and movies take a lot of it) and which applications you want to run. I usually partition in 20-30 GB chunks, but then I'm heavily into beta-testing and have seven separate operating systems (4 OS X (Panther and Tiger) and 3 OS 9) installed on two internal HDs.
This allows me to run any of the three OSs as standalone"s, use separate OS 9s for Classic, clone any and then apply updates without worrying about the consequences, and gives me a lot of options. I also have a 300 GB external FWHD, partitioned, so that I can easily backup what's on the internal HDs.
Q 3:
Supposedly there's some software solution, but I haven't used any. Some people indicate there's problems associated with proprietary software solutions. Do a google search and see what you can find.
Q 4 & 5:
See answer to Q 1 & 2.
Q 6 & (7):
Personally, I'd reinstall on the old drive, use Migration Assistant to transfer you settings and Apps from the clone. Work with the new system, deleting apps you don't want, when you get it the way you want, clone it to the external, then clone it again to another partition and use that one for experimenting/playing around. That way, you have a good solid system, a good backup, and a playground.

  • How can I restore my bookmarks with old Firefox Sync?

I have key sync and password from old Firefox Sync. And I want to restore my bookmarks.
Three years ago I use Firefox sync, but since i don,t use it.

You need to connect to Sync using a pre-Firefox 29 version to restore a connection to the Sync server and try to recover your data. Then follow the instructions to update your Sync account for Firefox 29. See this KB article - [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]
Firefox 29+ uses a hidden Recovery Key and no way to enter the old "Key".
Three years of inactivity? Your data may not be there, Sync wasn't intended to be a data storage cloud. It was created to keep multiple Firefox installations synchronized.

  • Cannot use my old firefox sync account after reinstalling

After reinstalling firefox I can no longer use my old Firefox Sync account. I am told that there is no such account here https://accounts.firefox.com and I created a new account, with the same e-mail as my old account.
After some research I was able to find this https://account.services.mozilla.com/ in which I can login with my old account.
My problem now is that I want to retrieve the information that I had in my old sync and I can't find any way to do it.
Also, because I was experiencing severe performance problems using firefox, I deleted some folders in my machine related to Firefox (after uninstalling) including what seemed to be the profile location for firefox.
What is really important for me is: How do I retrieve my old Firefox Sync account data or synchronize it with the new Mozilla account?
    Thanks,
    V

hello, firefox 29 and upwards is using a different sync system which isn't compatible with accounts set-up in older versions.
in this case you'd probably have to use a workaround and download the prior firefox 28 version, disable automatic updating for the moment (in options > advanced > update), link it to the old sync account (with username, password & recovery key) and upgrade after you have successfully restored your data this way...

  • How can I get the old Firefox back, this new one stinks

how can I get the old Firefox back, this new one stinks

Firefox is highly customizable and you may be able to customize it to meet your needs.
If you do not like the new UI, you can make Firefox 4 look and behave more like Firefox 3.6, for details see http://www.computertechtips.net/64/make-firefox-4-look-like-ff-3-6
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

  • Can I sign into Firefox sync on new computer and retrieve bookmarks even if old hard drive is destroyed?

My computer crashed & the hard drive's information cannot be retrieved. When I get a new hard drive put into this computer, can I simply download Firefox, sign into sync & automatically retrieve my old bookmarks? Do I need to alter any account sync settings before doing this?

Did you go through the steps at [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]? If not, you are using the old version of sync and are out of luck. If you did, you are on the new version and you have a good chance of being able to log in and download your data.

  • Firefox reset completely, attempted to restore old Firefox data, will not open saying that profile could not be loaded.

    Hello,
When returning to my computer, I attempted to open Firefox and received a prompt to either start Firefox in safe mode or reset it. I tried safe mode at first then proceeded to reset it as well. Losing all of my add-ons/extensions/etc, I tried to solve the problem by restoring my profile with a folder that appeared on my desktop titled "Old Firefox Data". After following instructions to restore my profile, a window now pops up saying that my profile could not be loaded and Firefox just does not open at all. Is there anyway to recover my old profile? I tried following another suggested method but when searing for my profile through the files, it could not be found.
    Thank you!

  • How do I delete the information from the old firefox sync mechanism?

I have updated to the latest versions of Firefox and the latest/new version of Firefox Sync on both my devices by following the instructions from this support site.
QUESTION: Did disconnecting my devices from the old sync mechanism delete any and all of my information (e.g. bookmarks, passwords, etc.) from Mozilla's servers?
QUESTION: If disconnecting my devices from the old sync mechanism did NOT delete all of this information from the Mozilla's servers, how do I now delete all of that information from the old sync mechanism? Also, if it did not and a step was required to do so before disconnecting my devices, that should be added to the instructions about moving to the new sync.
This seems to have been asked in a couple of different threads, but the answers I read all seem to describe how to either upgrade to the new sync mechanism or delete an account from the new sync mechanism. One provided a link to a site to delete an account, but it's unclear if that will delete the account from the old sync mechanism or from the new sync mechanism since there's no indication as to which is which in Mozilla's account services.
    Thanks for your help!

If you used the same email address on the new Sync as you were using with the older Sync, there is no "old" data to delete. Basically - the same account which was updated for the new version of Sync.

  • Restore "old Firefox data". I am in over my head. Please help.

I do not understand how to use the old/new profile copy/past process. I Do know I need the plugs ins from my old fire fox browser. I currently have firefox version 29. Did not do backup but the 'old Firefox data' file is on my desktop.

Note that if you restore your old add-ons, you will very likely run into the same problem that made you reset Firefox in the first place. The following directions assume you haven't installed any new add-ons in the current profile. If that's not the case, don't follow them; manually re-install your old add-ons from the Firefox Add-ons site instead.
    # Type ''about:support'' into the address bar and press Enter.
    # Click the Show Folder button. A Windows Explorer window with your current profile opens.
    # Right-click the Firefox taskbar icon and choose either Close Window or Close All Windows.
    # Open the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop.
    # Right-click the ''extensions'' folder and choose Copy.
    # In the window with your current profile, click the Organize button and choose Paste. Windows Explorer will ask if you want to merge the folders: click Yes.
    # Repeat the above two steps with the following files: ''extensions.sqlite'', ''extensions.json'' and ''extensions.ini''. If you're prompted whether to replace any existing files, answer Yes.

  • I updated to Firefox 4 and it will not work so I can not get on line and it replaced the old firefox so I also lost all my bookmarks. I need them back. How do I get them?

I have a Mc g5 with the 10.4.11 operating system. Your site is my home page and it kept bugging me to update to the firefox 4. So I did now when I try to get on it tells me that that "I can not open this application because it is not supported on this system". It replaced the old firefox that I had so I can not open that. I have no way to get to my book marks and I need them. Let me know how to get back to my old firefox and book marks.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version (TenFourFox) that runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at:

  • I deleted my Firefox Sync account at one point, but would like to create a new one using the same email address. Is this possible?

I had a Firefox Sync account a while back on an email address and then I deleted it. Now I want to use Firefox Sync again. I had forgotten that I deleted my account, but after trying to send password reset emails to that address and failing to receive them I can only conclude that the email is still on record in Firefox Sync, even if the account has been deleted.
Is it possible for me to set up a new account using this email address? Trying to set it up through Firefox tells me that the email address is in use, when from my point of view it is not.

Strangely enough, sending the email from account.services.mozilla.com did the trick this time! Thanks.

  • Restore old iCal while keeping new iCal?

Somehow the option to delete old events (after 700+ days) was turned on in iCal and I've lost years of events.  I have a backup via Time Machine that should contain the older version. My concern is restoring iCal and losing the newer events.  Is there a way to get back the old events without losing the new ones?

Time Machine restore worked. I have some duplicates but I didn't lose anything.

  • I recently lost my hardrive and want to restore from firefox sync that I have on my IPhone. How can I transfer this information.

I need instructions to transfer information that I have on my IPhone to Firefox on my new hard drive.

You need to use the Find My iPhone app (in the itunes store - free).  When invoking it on a device, you enter the ID password of the account the lost device is connected to.  You can also use a computer's browser and log into icloud.com.

  • Firefox Sync: "Unexpected error" when signing in, "Forgot Password", or Create account.

I noticed that there was a message that said reconnect to Sync. I clicked on it, and typed in my information, however, it keeps giving me an "Unexpected error" message in a red bar above my the e-mail address field. I've tried other tips, and now my bookmarks and add-ons are gone.
I was able to sign into: https://account.services.mozilla.com/. Please help me as I spent a lot of time and effort on my bookmarks.

hello hutothebert, firefox 29 and above use a new sync login system (https://accounts.firefox.com/) which isn't compatible with the old username/password/sync-key method (https://account.services.mozilla.com/) anymore.
however you could try this "hack" to get a new firefox version to connect to an old sync account:
enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up), right-click somewhere in that page & create a new string preference named '''services.sync.username''' with a value like '''fake'''.
afterwards you should be able to connect to the old account through the firefox options > sync panel. if this worked and you could import your data successfully, please migrate to the new sync afterwards: [[How to update to the new Firefox Sync]]

  • Can I delete my old Firefox sync account if I have a new one which uses the same email address?

    Hello,
I have unlinked all my devices from an old sync account and setup a new sync. In this process I have used the same email address as before.
I have no use of my old sync account, therefore the question is:
Can I delete the old sync account (via https://account.services.mozilla.com/ ) and - implicitly - all data associated with it without affecting my new Firefox account (and its data) in any way?
    Thank you!

Yes you can https://services.mozilla.com/delete-account/ and put in your username and password, and hit permanently delete your account. I personally wouldn't you never know if you may need it in the future.
