Restoring Original Smart Playlist.

How do I restore the original smart playlist such as "recently added", "recently played" etc. My daughter deleted a few of them by mistake. Thanks. I have winows xp home edition. an ipod and an iphone 4. I tried re-downloading itunes so i could re-set defaults but it didn't work, thanks.:)

Rebuilding your library is overkill. Just recreate the playlists that you want and have lost. They're not required. The standard list is:
90's Music
Classical Music
Music Videos
My Top Rated
Recently Added
Recently Played
Top 25 Most Played
To rebuild any of the lists simply use File > New Smart Playlist and then enter the rules as shown. As you change options in each row working from left to right the relevant selection boxes or value fields will appear. Use the + symbol to create a new line. When you have finished entering the rules click OK and then give the playlist its name.
90's Music
Recently Added
Top 25 Most Played
I'll post up the others soon...

  • Restore default Smart Playlist

I accidently deleted the default “Recently Added” Smart Playlist. I was just attempting to clear that playlist, not delete the folder. Oops, I use it often.
I have been trying to restore it by creating a new Smart Playlist with the same title, but it’s not working. Perhaps I don’t understand which rules I should be selecting. I’ve tried it a dozen different ways.
    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried it like this?
    Recently Added:
Match the rule "Date Added">"is in the last">"1">"Days" make the days and the interval to suit yourself, you can have days, weeks or months.
    Check the box "Live Updating"

  • Smart playlists are not in alphabetical order on iOS 5.1 devices

One of the most frustrating things for me about iTunes Match is the fact that the smart playlists in iTunes (version 10.6) do not sync in alphabetical order on my iPad/iPhone running iOS 5.1.
Even though I click on the Name column and the songs in iTunes appear in alphabetical order, the songs appear in a random order on the iPad. I spent hours trying to fix this by turning iTunes Match off on my iPad, turning it on etc all to no avail. I created new smart playlists thinking that maybe the original smart playlists were corrupted in some way by the upgrade to the latest version of iTunes. This did not work either.
Then, I had an idea. I created a new playlist (not a smart one), called it Test Alpha, copied the songs from the smart playlist into it and waited for my iPad to update.
Voila! The songs in this new, non-smart playlist are in alphabetical order.
I do hope that this problem is fixed. It is a pain to do this for the 15 odd smart playlist I have. Hope this helps someone else.

No. And the problem persists in iOS 6 with the latest version of iTunes.
For three weeks, I had been talking on and off with a techie in Singapore. She got me to run all these test, send screen shots etc..
In the end, I was told that the engineers said 'that is how it's supposed to be'. Well, thank you very much. No help at all. No further discussion about the issue ensued.
Apple's arrogance will soon be the cause of its share price collapsing. My solution? I have not renewed my subscription to iTunes Match.

  • Smart Playlists on Zen Vision:M and Creative Media Organizer Software

I come from the iPod world, where, once a playlist is created in iTunes, the playlist is transferred to the iPod, and is automatically updated each time you sync. That's why it's called "smart" playlist.
I can create a smart playlist using the Creative Media Organizer software. It automatically updates the playlist, based on the rules I defined. However, the playlist created on the Media Organizer does NOT get transferred to the Vision:M player! What's the point in that?
I can, of course, copy the smart playlist to the Vision:M manually... but there are two HUGE problems with that...
) The smart playlist becomes a "static" playlist... it does not get updated when you sync -- the music in the playlist never changes (even though the original smart playlist is updated on each sync),
    2) The software recopies the *music* back to the Vision:M each time you create a playlist! This means that it overwrites the music that was there, with the (same) music in the playlist!! This takes FOREVER, if there are a lot of titles in the playlist! This is obviously a brain-dead way of doing things! All the software/Vision:M needs to do, is to copy the actual music files that don't currently exist on the player, and then create a text file that contains the *location* of the music... in other words, an M3U playlist file! One of the (many) issues with doing things the way this software does it, is that each time a track appears in a separate playlist, a duplicate entry for that song appears in the Vision:M's music list! So, if you have 5 playlists, and each one contains "Mozart's 5th", then when you list all the songs on your Vision:M, you'll get 5 copies of "Mozart's 5th" listed! Dumb!
Any way around these problems? Can I have smart playlist that gets transferred to the player so that it contains only the songs I want? Does it *have* to recopy ALL the songs to the player, each time I create a playlist? Does it *have* to add duplicate entries to the list of files on my Vision:M?
Is the software *really* as dumb as I think it is, or am I just being a BDU (Brain Dead User)?

You can only automatically sync playlists using Windows Media Player 0 as far as I know. There's lots of other software out there that can use the Media Transfer Protocol of the Vision:M, but I'm not sure what they can do.
Creative's software is desperately lacking in the playlist sync area, so you're not being a BDU

  • Temporary Fix for Smart Playlist order bug

I stumbled across a Smart Playlist that was keeping the correct order and discovered why.  It was a Smart Playlist that contained 2 other Smart Playlists.  The original Smart Playlists didn't keep their order but the new one that combined them did.  So I experimented on a few other Smart Playlists by making new Smart Playlists that only contained another Smart Playlist.  And it works.  I've also been able to keep Live Updating enabled.
Hopefully this will help everyone who reads this get by until Apple fixes this bug, which they seem to reintroduce about once a year.

I'm sorry but none of these suggested fixes work, including sort before sync, media kind as music, not referring to other smart playlists, turning live update off, setting Play Order; nothing worked. Plus, on large smart playlists (2000+ songs), not only were they not ordered correctly but the phone (4S no less) pauses 20 seconds to think every time you go into the playlist after a sync.
In fact the only "fix" for me was Apple's last suggestion in their KB article on the subject of smart playlists not syncing in order: in iTunes select my smart playlist, then select all, then make a new playlist (using I believe Edit/New Playlist) based on that selection (which is now not smart), order as needed and sync. It works great but of course the list is now is non-self-updating and I have to manually update it when I add new songs. Not a big deal but still a pain.
For me, order is critical only on my Recently Added playlist, so I went manual with that one. The others I tend to shuffle so the lack of ordering isn't as big of a deal.

  • Restored but still not recognizing 2 smart playlists previously stored

I am having problems suddenly syncing my Nano which I have tried to solve by twice restoring it and then REsyncing. All playlists I have created previously synced just fine on all 3 of my iPods (1 of which is an iPhone). The problem I'm having ONLY is occuring on this Nano. Help!
Here is message I get: "This smart playlist depends upon 1 or more playlists which cannot be found" and the caution symbol is displayed next to both SMART playlists in the Nano list of playlists in the DEVICE category.
The caution symbol does NOT display next to those 2 SMART playlists in the "PLAYLISTS" category.
These 2 SMARTplaylists contain items from both the MUSIC library and AUDIOBOOKS library and PODCASTS library in the LIBRARY category list and no "caution" symbol is displayed next to ANY other item than these 2 "SMARTplaylists" in the DEVICES category for this particular Nano.
I have 2 other devices (iPhone and video iPod) and they have no problems whatsoever syncing fine with all these playlists (including the SMARTplaylists) and I HAVE ALREADY RESTORED THIS NANO 2 TIMES and that has not solved the problem.
    Help???!!!!

Apparently Audible has a bug right now in their software that talks to iTunes. They informed me about this today thus is the root of the problem. They "are addressing it".

  • Restoring All Playlist Files and Smart Playlist Files

I have to reformat my computer. I've saved my iTunes folder to my external hard drive, but what I'm concerned about is all the Smart Playlists and Playlists that I've created. On my other laptop I hooked up my external hard drive and copied the iTunes files, but when I open iTunes, there are no playlists there. I have about 50 smart playlists that I've created. Do I have to recreate all of them after reformating my computer? Is there a file that can be copied that has all that information?

+Is there a file that can be copied that has all that information?+
Yes, it's default name is iTunes Library.itl
Alternatively, you can export each playlist to an XML file and then import it after your PC gets set up again.
Don't forget to deauthrozie itunes before you reformat!

  • How to restore smart playlist that has been deleted

I deleted the smart playlist by mistake. how can I get them back?

iTunes is pretty unforgiving about deleting playlists. There no "undelete".  You can revert to using an earlier version of your iTunes library file from a backup.
It doesn't make a difference in this case but you did post in the iTunes for Mac forum and your computer information says you are running Windows.

  • Howto: backup & restore smart playlist DEFINITION

    howdy y'all,
i have been having lots of probs with itunes 7.6.2.9 on windows xp, sp3. **sigh ...** i'm not looking for help on the itunes crashes right now, tho, thanks. itunes crashed once again and it destroyed my ITL file.
that killed all my smart playlists, of course.
is there any way to export [and then import, of course] the definition of a smart playlist? yes, i know that you can export the current content of the playlist, but that is pretty useless. the result of importing it is dumb playlist. *grin* not what i want.
    help? please?
    take care,
    lee

Export the playlist as an XML file. When you import it on another computer, the definition is imported right along with it.

  • Smart Playlists Not Syncing Correct CONTENT on iPhone 3G

Hi, I apologize about the length of this description, but I believe all or most of it may be relevant.
I have been having trouble synchronizing ANY of my smart playlists. I first noticed it in the playlists I had created which entailed "Most Recently Added" or "Most Recently Played" options. Now I realize that all of my smart playlists are no longer syncing their play order (some too big to determine if songs aren't making it into some of them). For instance, here is the criteria for a playlist I created just to demonstrate this problem (this is a brand new playlist just I made and synced with my iPhone):
    Title: Recently Played 5
Criteria: Rating is in the range 3 stars and 5 starts
    Checked Boxes-
(X)Limit to [5] items selected by most recently played
    (X)Match Only Checked Songs
    (X)Live Updating
Playlist as it appears in iTunes:
"Summer, Man" by Taking Back Sunday
"Sink Into Me" by Taking Back Sunday
"New Again" by Taking Back Sunday
"Error: Operator" by Taking Back Sunday
    "Swing" by Taking Back Sunday
Playlist as it appears on my iPhone:
"Them Bones" by Alice In Chains
"Hands in the Sky (Big Shot)" by Straylight Run
"Lead Said (And A Paper Anchor)" by Atreyu
    ... etc
These playlist CLEARLY do not match and it drives me crazy because these types of playlists are what I generally listen to. I'm running iTunes 9.0.1.8 on Windows 7 OS (Dell Inspiron 6400), and OS 3.1.2 on an iPhone 3G. I just recently consolidated my library. I had a collection of over 7000 songs on my external hard drive backed up, and kept about 4000 of them on my computer stored in iTunes (i.e. only the 4000 songs were present in my iTunes library, originating from my laptop hard drive--NOT EXTERNAL). Upon switching to Windows 7, I wanted to have ALL my music on my laptop hard drive and thus copied and re-added all of the music (all 7000). I lost all my track info (ratings, plays, last played date, date added, etc) in this process until I opened the iTunes library file with iTunes(had backed up from before new OS installation) and, voila, all my playlists and track info was restored. I had to do some cleaning up of duplicate files, but nothing major.
I found this thread from Sept. 2008 which seemed to be in regards to the exact same problem under almost the exact same situation: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8066846#8066846. Unfortunately, it's unanswered and archived. My iTunes did not crash, but I cleanly installed a new OS and had to start fresh.
I cannot for the life of me figure this issue out. I thought about restoring my device and syncing it again (which I will try again tomorrow to see if I can manage any progress), but I want to retain my app info and text messages so I plan on restoring from a backup. If anyone has any solutions or even suggestions, I'm open to try anything.
    Thanks!

Sorry, I just realized I'm in the wrong forum... I apologize.

This looks like yet another example of the "smart playlists with live updates are broken" bug, which has been discussed at length in this forum. Two "fixes" are known to work, at least some of the time:
    1) turn off live updates (yes, I know that defeats the purpose of a "recently played" list; so does the current situation, where you have apparently random tracks instead of the right content).
    2) add a "playlist is Music" rule to the playlist (in addition to the ones you have now).
In my experience the "playlist is Music" fix also has the effect of turning off live updates (regardless of what the checkboxes say), but other people report no such problem. So it might work for you.

  • Software 1.2.1-Blank "Smart" Playlists?

Thought to try a new thread as there seems to be a lot of -48 issues (which I do not have). For MANY years I have used about 250 "smart" playlists by artist and play count. Every time I sync, any songs by that artist that have been played come off the playlist, until I have gone once through every song. The list is blank and it does NOT get transferred to my Pod. I do the 1.2.1 update and guess what? I now have over 250 playlists listed on my Pod with about 200-210 of them containing... NO SONGS.
Has Apple become SO lame that this is intentional? Am I the ONLY one experiencing this? BTW, I'm, no noob to any of this, so I have gone though a bunch of testing to try and see what's up. Including re-downloading the updater. Full restore. None are helping and I have a Pod that I simply can not use in the way I have always been able to use.
Anyway, my question is if you have a smart playlist that, by it settings, has no songs listed, that show NO songs when selected in iTunes that will actually appear as a blank playlist on a 5.5G Pod?

I thought i'd start a new thread as the old one is
taking way to long to load.
Good plan; the only thing worse than the load time for the old thread was that Apple haven't fixed, or even acknowledged, this problem.
I have found 1.2.1 to be a little better than 1.2 so far. I only get problems when I eject my iPod and reconnect. What I have found works is this (and I think it is effectively Robert Todd2's original solution):
    1. Configure iTunes to enable Disk Use on the iPod and to NOT start iTunes when you connect the iPod.
    2. Shut down iTunes and eject the iPod
    3. Reconnect the iPod, run Disk Utility / Repair Disk. This finds lots of errors.
    4. Start iTunes and everything runs just fine. I can change settings, add contents, delete content, click Apply etc.
    5. When done, eject the iPod, remove the cable and close iTunes
    6. Reconnect the iPod, run Disk Utility / Repair Disk. Again, will find lots of errors.
    7. Eject iPod
    8. iPod should now work fine.
    9. When you want to resync, start again from 3 (you may not find any errors though as you ran a Repair Disk is step 6).
There have been loads of suggested fixes, most of them don't work, and those that do seem to work for a subset, so I offer this solution with no guarantee of success!!

  • Smart Playlist problem on iOS 4.2 iPhone 3g

I don't know if it matters that I have an iPhone 3g or if this is a universal problem with iOS 4.2...
I have several smart playlists I use to manage podcasts. One for news and talk podcasts and one for fiction podcasts, but I suppose they could be anything. I have them set to grab specific podcasts where the play count is 0.
What I'm noticing since the last update is that they will play the first podcast fine, then get about 2 seconds into the next track and stop playing. Interestingly, while watching the screen today when a podcast ended, the next one started, then stopped, and when I clicked the button on the headphones, the screen said it was playing podcast 3 of 2. There were 3 originally, and when it finishes one, since the play count is no longer 0, it's deleted from the playlist.
I suppose I can manage them manually, but I've been doing it this way for years. It also keeps things nicely in sync between my iMac, iPhone and iPod shuffle.
Am I the only one seeing this?

There is no legit way to downgrade.
Have you tried basics from the manual?
    Restart.
    reset.

  • 3.1.3 update and smart playlist problem

All the songs in the smart playlist are updated to the iphone, the playlist is shown where the iphone is listed under devices, but it is not listed under playlists on the phone. I've done a restore and sync (not from backup), edited the playlist and resync, deleted/recreated the smart playlist and resync. I've unchecked all playlists except just the one smart playlist and it just won't get the playlist name.

I have just run into same issue after installing the 3.1.3 update. Multiple smart playlists no longer sync to the iphone 3G, with the exception of one. Beyond that, my issue is exactly as bredmond's original post.
