Restoring permissions to a site and document libraries

We have SharePoint sites (SPWeb) with unique permissions (permissions inheritance broken).  Each site has several document libraries in it.  The document libraries also have their permissions inheritance broken.  Users are assigned to
a custom permissions level at the document library level and at the same time they are given Limited Access permission level at the site level.  Apparently, one of the document libraries was still inheriting permissions.  A customer with site
admin rights was trying to remove some user permissions for the document library that was still inheriting permissions.  Because the permissions were still being inherited, they were taken to the parent site permissions page.  They selected most
of the accounts and clicked Remove.  They thought they were removing permissions for that document library but instead they removed permissions at the site level which means that they removed permissions to all document libraries for these accounts.
My question is: I have a content database backup from last night.  I also have a full farm backup (done via Central Admin) from a month or two ago.  Is there any way to restore those permissions ( to the site and document libraries) from one
of these backups?  I cannot restore the whole site collection because the other sites in this site collection are not affected by this.  I can only restore an SPWeb object.  However, is my understanding correct that restoring the SPWeb is only
going to restore the content and not the permissions?  Is there any other way to restore users permissions at the site and document library level from the two backups I have?
thanks,

I do not think its possible to restore permissions only.
You have to restore another site from backup and then map user permissions in all document libraries. If possible then develop a custom control which will check user permission on restored site and apply it on the production site.

  • Data View Web Part - List of Subsites and Document Libraries under Current Site - Must be able to Package as Site Template in SPDesigner

    Hi Guys,
On the home page of each sub site I would like to be able to show a list of subsites and Document libraries that are under the current subsite.
I started investigating a solution using Datasources with SOAP requests sent to the server but it is very difficult to understand how to surface it on the Data View WebPart.
I have tried with the search results webpart but the problem is that it does not work well when packaged in a Site Template.
    Please advise.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Rhyan

    Ok,
    Here is the problem:
When creating a mysite from powershell or script, apparently you can ONLY do this from a wfe (or a server running Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application in services on server).
You CANNOT create mysites from script on your appserver if it is not also a Web Application Server. I confirmed the same is true in my test farm. I guess I was always running most of these scripts on the webserver.
I searched all over and cannot find this documented anywhere.
Who do I contact to have Microsoft document this?
It's Thursday morning, I've been working non stop since Saturday morning so you don't have to :)

  • Saving and restoring sets of open applications and documents

Sometimes I have to restart when I have 20 to 30 Word and Excel files, websites, etc., open for work. It's time-consuming to go back and open them all up and get them positioned on various virtual desktops so I can get back to productive work, and every time I do it I swear there's got to be a utility that will save the state of these applications and their open documents for later restoration. Yet I've never been able to find an application to do this. Has anyone dealt with this issue successfully?
    Thanks.

AFAIK, when you select Restart, you should get a dialog box for each unsaved, open document that allows you to save it, before the app will quit. If that's not working, then you should manually save the open documents and quit the app before you restart.

  • How do I restore permissions to amend Metadata and Keywords on Bridge?

I have just bought a new PC and reinstalled Bridge and  CS6. On amending  or adding Keywords or metadata to my existing images I receive an error message: 'There was an error writing Metadata to <Filename>.' It has appeared on .jpg , .tif and .cr2 alike.
What is the procedure for rectifying this?

Very helpful suggestion and response, Thanks for pointing out that it is a permission issue. I am working through the issue and resolving my problem.

  • SharePoint 2013 - document libraries and newsfeeds are visible when viewed using Internet Explorer running on the server but not from any other machine

On a single Windows 2012 R2 server I have installed SQL 2012 and SharePoint 2013 SP1 with the latest update roll ups. When I remote desktop to the server using the farm and site collection admin account  and open page http://server_name_here using
Internet Explorer, I'm able to see newsfeeds and document libraries.
If I connected to a separate Windows 7 machine as  the farm and site collection admin account  and open page http://server_name_here using Internet Explorer, I'm able to view the SharePoint pages except I cannot see any newsfeeds or document libraries.
There's just blank space where they should be. I have repeated this process on several other machines that are not the server and get the same result on every machine (I've tried other servers, desktops, adding the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list
in IE, even using firefox). I'm using the same account as I did when I logged onto the server directly. Any thoughts as to what's going on?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the idea, Harsh. What am I looking for?
It is currently set to the default of http://server_name and http://server_name:port_number (the latter is for Central Admin).
When I have access to the server, I have always done so the same way, using http://server_name. This was true when I access it from the desktop of the server itself and when I tried to access it from other desktops and servers (the machines where I had the
issues with the libraries and feeds not showing up). Are there other values I should add?
I have not tried to add http://server_FQDN as we don't plan on using that to access it but if you think it will help I would be happy to add it.

  • Users are unable to synchronize document libraries with OneDrive for Business

    Hello,
We are having an issue with our users attempting to synchronize document libraries with OneDrive for Business. When a user tried to synchronize the document library either via the "SYNC" button on the document library page using IE or by
manually entering the document libraries path into the OneDrive for Business desktop app they receive the following error
"We can't connect to the specified SharePoint site". The users have the Edit permission to both the site and the document library. I have performed the following actions in attempt to get the synchronization to work.
    1. Tested giving user the owner permission to the site and document library. same result.
    2. Performed a repair on the users Office 2013 installation.
An interesting point to note is that I myself am able to synchronize the document libraries using both the "SYNC" button on the document library site and by entering the path manually in the desktop app. Difference between my account and the test
accounts is that I'm a site collection administrator and farm administrator. Can anyone shed some light onto this issue?

    Hi Corey,
According to your description, my understanding is that the users cannot sync document libraries with OneDrive for Business.
I recommend to check the Permission Level to see if the Use Client Integration Features permission is selected.
If not, check this permission in the corresponding permission level which is granted to the users.
Please also check if the users have the right permission to sync the document library with OneDrive for Business.

  • Most user friendly way to browse document libraries for saving documents

We are trying to figure out the most user friendly way to save office documents to different site collection document libraries.  The locations appear fine when we click "save as" for recent folders.  We can even click browse and use
the up arrow for getting closer to the root path of the site.  This works fine, but there is not an easy way navigate to a different site collection.  Sure, I can copy/paste the web address in the file path, but I think that is asking too much for
basic end users.  Is there a different approach I am not aware of?
    Thanks,

How about Link a library to the Windows Favorites Folder, the use favorite to save document.

  • Valid users can see a site, but not the document libraries they have permissions for

    Hello everybody,
at a customer's site, there is SharePoint Foundation 2013 SP1 running, bound to both http and https. Seeminlgy out of nothing, a strange behavior occurred: Visting
http://intranet/subsite showed the page headers (logo, global navigation etc.), but no content. The welcome text was missing as well as the links to the document libraries which should appear in the left navigation.
After explicitely adding http://intranet as an alternate name (https://intranet was active only, don't know why), we can again reach content via http. Still strange appears, that
http://intranet global navigation links get redirected to https (fine, but unexpected). If we change a deep link to a document library from https to http in the browser's address bar, we can reach the content fine.
However, one problem still exists: This site gets published via TMG 2010 via https, and that also worked just fine for many months. But now, I can try what I want in TMG, valid authenticated users see only the top navigation, but no content at all.
Can anyone give me a hint about what to check? Of course, I will provide any info you may need.
    Best Regards, Stefan Falk

    Hello Daniel,
Thank you for your response. As to your questions:
I just added http://intranet to the alternate access mappings of the intranet zone and did not extend a website.
Besides SharePoint Central Administration, there is no other SharePoint web site collection on this server, and no other non-SharePoint-IIS-Site. This is a VM for nothing else than hosting this single intranet site collection.
We do see the same issue under two sub-websites underneath
    http://intranet, namely http://intranet/Datenaustausch and
http://intranet/Protokolle. In both sub-sites, there is some welcome text on the home page and there are several document libraries, each with permissions not interited, but explicitely granted to specific users.
The first (solved) issue was, that we could not see the document libraries when using http, but could see them using https. This was solved by adding the alternate access mapping for
    http://intranet explicitely.
We can successfully browse the sites (using http and https now) from the internal network. The one issue left is that the same does not work through TMG, that is, coming from the external network, we can see and call up the sites in a browser, but not any
content in them. We do see the site title and logo, and the global navigation at the top of the page, but we do not see the welcome text, nor the document libraries. This did work last week, and we do not know nor could find, why it stopped working. The issue
persists regardless of whether we use bridging to https or to http between TMG and SharePoint.
We have already restarted the SharePoint box, with no success.
If I can provide any further information needed, I will be glad to do so.
    Best Regards, Stefan Falk

  • How to rename content type on web site level and underneath all the document libraries using powershell?

    Hello
I wantto rename content type on web site level and underneath all the document libraries using powershell, please let me know how can do this?
    I saw this url
http://suryapulipati.blogspot.in/2011/08/rename-content-type-name-in-list-using.html, but I want to change everything from Web Site, subsite and underneath document libraries. Because if you try to change on any on document library, it will be applicable
for that document library, if you change on web level then underneath document libraries content type names not updated automatically.
    Please advise

I was warned and I went straight to the site and they were gone.  I didnt was any time. Either way, there should be a way to either store or restore such items. Have you ever lost pictures that were so important to you that you couldnt sleep or eat for some time. I have and it wasnt fun. I'm glad that you were able to get yours unlike some of us.

I am still wondering why iTunes tries to confuse me every time I try to make changes in my preferences, telling me that I "don't have enough permissions", although I am the administrator.
That's clearly a fault. Whether it's an iTunes problem or a Windows problem I can't say at this time. If you search the Using iTunes for Windows forum for "permissions", you should find threads that can help you sort out this problem.
Then, changes to the format are not obvious, and I get no notice that I am burning music files as data.
If you click on a playlist and look at the lower-right of the iTunes window, it says right there what format it will use to burn the playlist.

  • Incoming Email Settings for the libraries in My Sites and Personal Sites

    Hello Friends,
I'm currently working on SharePoint 2013 implementation where My Sites have been configured in a separate web application and personal sites are being stored under same web application.
Ex: My Site Host : http://mysite.abc.com
          All Personal sites: http://mysite.abc.com/Personal/firstname_lastname
These are the challenges I'm facing...
    1. I enabled Incoming Emails for one of the document library in My Site host but not receiving emails. (All settings are properly configured, document libraries in other sites (team sites) are getting emails.). I doubt the problem is only with my site template.
    2. Incoming Email Settings are not appearing in "one Drive" document library in my personal site( which is "Documents" library in personal site). So I added Email event as stated here and here
and settings are started appearing, but I can enter only email address as other settings are not appearing.  Here also I'm facing the same problem.
    Kindly share ideas if any.
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
It is encourage that you to use another library in another site template:
    http://davecoleman146.com/2010/10/27/how-to-setup-mail-enabled-document-libraries-in-sharepoint-2010-part-4/
    http://sharepointgeorge.com/2010/configuring-incoming-email-sharepoint-2010/
Please be notice: The e-mail drop folder setting is not available in automatic mode, because that mode automatically sets the e-mail drop folder to the folder that is specified by the SMTP service. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263260.aspx#section3)

  • Differences between Publishing sites and publishing enabled document library

    Hi
what is the main differences between Publishing sites and publishing enabled document library
and how to enable publishing for document library?
    adil

Publishing Sites is an out-of-the-box site template designed to publish web pages and it comes with a pre-built workflow or without (depends on which template you pick). It comes with libraries such as Pages library, Publishing Images, or Site Images.
It is configured to fully customized the master pages (or add new ones), and page layouts.
There is no such thing as publishing enabled document library. A document library is not designed to publish web pages. You can have Site Pages library in a team site, but if you are looking to fully brand a site collection, then this is not your answer.
You will need to use a Publishing Site to fully brand your Internet or Intranet site.
You can enable the publishing infrastructure on any site that is NOT a publishing site, but this does not turn your provisioned site to a publishing site. It simply turns on publishing features, such as navigation management, master pages/page layouts management,
    publishing workflows, etc....

  • Compare 2 Document Libraries from different Site Collections

    Hello,
We are in the middle of migrating from SP 2013 to SP 365 and I would like to be able to compare the documents from our existing document libraries to what was moved over to the corresponding 365 document library.  Is there a search feature in Windows
or something easy someone can tell me about?  Right now I am taking screen shots of the 2 libraries and doing this manually.  I added a 'count' in my view in the library and that helped a little but thought there would be a search or something like
that.  Any help is much appreciated!
    Joanie

    Hi
You can use ShareGate tool to compare or even move your whole document library to SP 365 with content and permissions.
Also it comes with 15 day trial so you can review it and use it without any problem for 15 days

  • Want to save files, documents, bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries, each in separate folders to external hard drive prior to full sweep and overwrite for the purpose of full sweep of Macbook?

Never done this before and cannot find a manual for OS X 10.7.5 Lion. Basically I want to clean my 2009 Macbook6,1 as though I were selling it and start out fresh but before I attempt it I want to stash my contents (Files, Documents, Bookmarks, iTunes and iPhoto libraries to my external Hard Drive, all in separate folders to return them to Macbook after the full sweep and big overwrite. Can anyone help me?

That may not be the best approach (see below).
Format the drive for a Mac (see #1 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how).
Create the folders you want on it.
Open a second Finder window and drag what you want from one to the other.
If you only copy the stuff listed, you'll lose your AddressBook, Mail, Calendars, preferences, and probably all sorts of other things.
A better option might be to back up your entire system, either with Time Machine or one of the "cloning" apps.  Then you can restore selectively from TM, or copy selectively from the clone.
