Restoring photos from Originals directory

Somehow, 99% of the photos associated with a folder and it's subsequent albums are no longer in my iPhoto library.  They are, however, still in the Oroginals directory so I've not lost them completely.
How do I get the files back into the iPhoto library?  If I try to import the selected files, it says they are already in iPhoto.

Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If these fail continue with:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Is there a way to restore photos from Drop box to my desktop iPhoto in a large batch instead of one at a time? I tried and a zip file was downloaded but won't open. Says file format not recognized. I see how to do it one at a time with the "download" button in Dropbox but that's so cumbersome for lots of photos.

  • How do I restore photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto. I erased all my events in iPhoto by mistake so need to sync them phone upstream to lions 10.7....not even apple support could help??

How do I restore photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto. I erased all my events in iPhoto by mistake so need to sync them phone upstream to lions 10.7....not even apple support could help?? I plug my phone into iPhoto and it sees the camera roll but none of my event so I can move them back into iPhoto

Your photos are gone.  When you synch your phone with iPhoto, the actual picture file does not synch, rather is is a very small thumbnail file suitable for viewing on the phone, but of such small resolution that it's useless for anything other than viewing on the phone.  In any case, Apple makes no way for you to retrieve these thumbnail file.
If you deleted photos from iPhoto, your only hope is if you have Time Machine or another backup that might have had those photos.  Are they perhaps still in the "Trash" within the iPhoto app?

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • I don't want to restore photos from icloud onto my new iphone

    Hi there,
I had an iPhone 4 and just got a new 5c. I backed up my 4 to icloud as i dont't own a laptop. I bought 20GB of storage and everything seemed to work. When I set up new iPhone i selected 'Restore from iCloud Back up' as I need old contacts on this new phone HOWEVER, I do not want all photos on new phone as I donot have enough space and they will fill up my memory. They are already in my iCloud  so I shouldn't need them on new phone. I didn't see any option to just restore data rather than media and so photo stream is downloading constantly but wont finish as there is not enough space on phone. How can I just restore contacts to new phone and not pictures? My other option could be to set up as new iphone, but if I do this can I then download the contacts from my icloud seperately?
    Going slowly insane.

You can't restore only part of the backup.  Only camera roll photos are stored in the backup and they will have to be restored as part of restoring the entire backup.  Photo stream photos are not stored in the backup; photo stream photos from the last 30 days will stream to your new phone when it signs into your iCloud account.  You can stop this by turning off my photo stream in Settings>iCloud>Photos.
The other thing you should be aware of is that you can't have photos in iCloud that are not also on your phone.  If you delete them from your phone, they will be deleted from iCloud.

  • Restoring photos from the preview in Lightroom 5

I recently deleted a few files in cleaning up my desktop, however, in doing so managed to delete a few folders that had some really important photos on them. In lightroom I still have the previews for them, but can't work out if/how I can restore the photos from the previews. I googled the problem, but only found a solution to the problem in Lightroom 4, as posted here-
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/extract-previews-lightroom-4.html
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help, as I need these photos!
    Cheers,
    Rory

As Jim said, ideally it would be best if you can fish those files out of the trash/recycle.
Failing that, and failing recovery from backup and/or original card, then Adobe's Lr4 procedure will work in Lr5 too.
However, if you follow their procedure, recovered previews will be devoid of all metadata, and not have a proper ICC profile assigned (read: it's a 1/2 way solution).
    For a full-fledged solution, consider:
    * Rob Cole's Preview Exporter, or
    * Jeffrey Friedl's Preview Extractor
    (google 'em)

  • Restoring photos from TM

Having trouble restoring iphotos from time machine. Cant see photos but have found some thing called package that has 5.3gb of data which should be all my photos. When I restore that from the TM the photos dont appear in the iphoto and that package seems to disappear. I made sure that the time machine does not perform any backups until this issue is resolved. Any clues?

    Hey Bob
Thanks for the info.Using iphoto  9.2.3 Unfortunately Pondini although thorough, has been unable to help. Not impressed with Time Machine at all. It just hasn't worked! Plenty of backups and appears to be all running well but have taken both imac and TM to authorised apple repairer and they haven't been able to restore. Appreciate they didn't charge for their time. Very jaded at the moment as I have been with Apple since 1989 my first being an LC111 at great expense, when included with Apple Laser Printer. A touch over 5k.Can't understand why I cant find itunes songs that have been purchased through the store and the store tells me I have purchased them but wants to charge me again to update my itunes file. Very dissappointed with TM overall as I purchased it after we got robbed and lost the computer last time.I know the stuff is on TM as the memory is nearly full (1TB) but I only have around 400gb of my own data. So something is there it is just hard to extract.   "Back in Time" software is proving a little more successful and have started to retrieve the photos. Thank God as my wife would have taken the one that the bank manager doesn't own. Overall, still persisting and looking forward to the new imac release soon

  • Restoring photos from holiday

I recently went on holiday and lost my iphone5. I now have a new iphone5 and the contacts I added to the phone which I lost on holiday are still in my contacts but none of the pictures I took are. Is there anyway I can retrieve them?

If they were in the camera roll when you backed up your old phone, restoring the backup to your new phone should recover them.  Also, if you were using photo stream on your old phone and your new phone is signed into the same iCloud account and has photo stream enabled, it would receive photo stream photos from the last 30 days.

  • HT4859 Restoring Photos from icloud

I restored a new 4S from an old back up on the computer before I realised I should have restored from current backup in iCloud. how do I recover my photos?

The photos should have been synced to a computer all along for archive.  Many users have lost photos because they were unable to restore them from an iCloud backup.  However, in your case, you could do a reset of the new 4S (Settings>General, scroll to bottom of screen...) and then perform a new installation, be sure to choose the most recent backup from iCloud.  If they do not come back and you don't have them backed to a computer, then they're gone, unfortunately.

  • My icloud only restores photos from a year ago

Just bought a new iPhone 4S 64 gig. When I restored my existing iCloud info to the new device - it only restored photos, text messages, and call lists from 2011. How can I regain the current back that still exists on my previous iphone 4.

You will be restoring the old Aperture library from TM, having it on the Desktop is fine.
Once the restore is finished you will have the old Aperture library in that folder. Now you want to open this library by double clicking it (the library). This will open Aperture on it and Aperture will  tell you the library needs to be upgraded. Let Aperture upgrade the library.
Once the Library is upgraded to the latest version of Aperture you can do want you want with it. Once you have gotten to this point if you still need help post back.

  • Restoring photos from Time Machine

Hi-I have an album I want to restore from my Time Machine backup. When I find the album I want to restore, I have 2 choices: to Restore All or to Restore. I select all the photos in the album and click on Restore and then nothing happens! I thought they would end up in my iPhoto Library but I can't find them anywhere. How do I restore an album? Thanks for the help! Judy

to restore selected photos from TM (You can not restore a selected album - albums do not exist - they are entries in the iPhoto database)
To restore selected photos launch iPhoto and under the file menu browse backups - there you can restore specific photos
To restore an entire library (which would restore the albums as of that time) launch TM and go back to the time you want, select the iPhoto library and click restore (restore to the desktop so you do not overwrite your existing library -- unless that is what you want)
