Restoring pre-lion functionality to iCal

I've put up with the changes to iCal ever since I installed Lion, but seriously! It seems to me that much of what was useful (or rather, made it tolerable) about iCal has been lost. Please tell me if I am missing something:
Adding events: iCal now defaults to an all-day event and when I de-select all day, it defaults to 10:00 am - 6 pm, which I then have to change every. single. time. There is no preference setting to change this as far as I can tell.
Calendar month sidebar: I typically look at my calendar in the month view. It used to be that there was a side bar that showed small views of the preceding and following month. Now gone. There is no preference setting to change this view as far as I can tell.
Event times do not show: Even though I have selected "show event times" in preferences, event times do not show in month view. They did pre-Lion.
I keep thinking I must just be missing some way to restore this basic functionality. I scour Prefences after each update to see if things have changed but am disappointed.
Is there a better calendar that will sync with my iPad/iPhone??

iCal in Lion is as you describe and does not include the small calendar.
You might like to consider BusyCal. This is sort of 'iCal Pro': it works with Lion, it includes the small calendar and left sidebar. ToDos can repeat and dated ToDos can be displayed on the day in the calendar. Images can be added to entries, and the font can be customised for any entry. It will sync to iCloud or you can sync with other machines on your own local network independently of any server.
There is a free trial available from the website: you can buy it from the website or slightly cheaper from the Mac App Store.
(I have no connection with this company.)

  • Is it possible to sync iCal with iCloud on Lion machines but still subscribe on pre-Lion machines?

I absolutely love iCal, and have a very complicated system set up such that various individuals/computers can access my calendars.  I was thrilled about iCloud, as that mean that I would not have to worry about remembering events until I found myself in front of the "main" machine, but could update iCal from all Lion/iOS5 devices, which are my general working machines.
But, it appears that iCloud has removed my former webcal publishing, and now my pre-Lion machines cannot keep up to date with the calendars.  So, I've done a bunch of investigating, and think I have found a work-around, but I still have a concern about it, and am also wondering if there is a better solution.
So, what I want to do is this:
I have two Macs running Lion (laptop, desktop) and an iPhone running iOS5 that I would like to be able to update calendars from and have it show up on all.  iCloud neatly accomplishes this (whereas before, I had to wait to find myself in front of the desktop, or remember to sync the iPhone).
I also have a plethora of older Macs, owned by myself, people in my group, and my family, that currently subscribe to various webcal addresses to keep up with "Work" and "Home" calendars, on a read-only basis.  The Macs are running anywhere from OS 10.2 to 10.6.  Upgrading to Lion is *not* an option -- first of all, they're not all my machines, and second of all, some are truly old (10.2 is running on a G3 -- yes, a G3, still in working order and completely fit for its purpose, with no plans to update until the machine physically stops working, but 10.2 is the most recent OS it can run).
The work-around I found is this:
I set the iCloud calendars to share with "everyone" which provides me with a webcal address that I can send to people and tell them to subscribe to it in their iCals.
    My concern is:
I am concerned about the "everyone" sharing:  I previously used a prviate, password-protected third party webcal pubishing service.  The URLs the everyone-sharing produces look complicated enough that it is unlikely that anyone would "guess" it, but is possible to browse public iCalendars somewhere?  The information in the calendars isn't hugely sensitive, but some of it is private enough it would cause a stink if some people blundered across the "Work" calendar, and perhaps some embarrassment if others found the "Home" calendar (especially as work people will know I am using this method).  Does anyone know how easy it is to access these calendars if you have not been provided the URL by the publisher?
And finally, is there  a better solution?  Ideally, I'd have password-protected webcal sharing.  It looked to me that the "only with people you invite" choice requires people to both have an iCloud account, and then use an iCloud enabled OS in order to get it into their iCal, which won't work with the pre-lion machines.  But perhaps I am wrong about this?

Sharing (not publishing) can be done privately - which requires the recipients to have an iCloud account - or publicly. As you say, this means than anyone who knows the URL can subscribe: but there's no published list of calendars, people who don't know the URL would have to guess it so the chances of them finding it are fairly low.

  • Is there "To Do" functionality in iCal 5.0  If So ... how?

Wondering if there is a "To Do" function within iCal 5.0 that I'm missing. I would find it very beneficial and have to believe I'm just not finding it.

  • Restoring pre-migration DPM Database - Reporting Tab issue

Before migration, upgraded DPM 2010 to 2012 thru to 2012 R2. Took backup of database.
Built new Windows 2012 R2, SQL 2012 SP1 & DPM 2012 R2. While database is blank, DPM seems to work fine.
Restored pre-migration backup of DPM database over this new blank database. Most of DPM seems fine so far. Tape autoloader and attached disks are recognised and previous backups are all available. Protection Groups seem fine.
Accessing the reporting tab causes MMC to quit with error.

Accessing reporting using Internet Explorer and the URL for Reporting in SQL seems Okay.
Seeing as the database restore is the single factor that causes functionality to break I have been trying to ascertain what I might correct incside the pre-migration database.
While the new machine has the same computer name, the accounts for services and SQL were changed in line with what was suggested/recommended by the setup comments I came across (domain accounts instead of local etc.) So there would be a discrepancy between
the pre-migration security accounts and the new servers security accounts.
Should I try and correct this specific issue and can anyone help with that (seeing as rest seems to be working okay)?
    OR
Can you point me to the recommended steps that I should follow (post-restore) to get this setup working for reporting?

You're not alone. I have the exact same issue (report tab results in MMC crash) after upgrading from DPM 2012sp1 to DPM 2012R2.
I installed fresh windows 2012r2, then installed DPM 2012sp1, restored database, then upgraded to DPM 2012r2. Now I can't access the report TAB even though
http://dpmserver/reports works just fine for viewing DPM reports.
My error codes are identical to what you posted.
Additionally, here is the crash log where I thought it was relevant to our situation:

  • Iphone 4 restores in Lion, wouldn't in Snow leopard.

Okay this is a weird one. My (non-jailbroken) iPhone 4 just went black one day a few months back.
Tried to restore in Snow Leopard with fully updated Itunes many, many times but it never worked (always got one of several 1600,1602 etc,)
    messages.
Not to get into too much detail but I'm a US resident currently out of the US in a town which has no Apple store so swapping the phone would
    have been a major pain.
Recently(a few months after my phone died) I installed Lion on it's own partition on my Macbook and today for s#$%t's and giggles decided to try
restoring my phone one last time. What do you know? It worked.
    WHY??
    I'm happy but confused...
Lion partition was a clean install(no migrated info or time machine) so no back ups to which to restore.
Tried restoring my now functioning phone in my Snow Leopard partition ....same old error 1600. Had to switch back to Lion and restore.
Was there something fishy with my Snow Leopard installation?
    Has anybody else experienced this?

See this support document for help with a restore error. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
Error 21 falls under Hardware issues.

  • How to Restore To Do's or iCal

I almost had a heart attack this morning when something on the computer glitched and it appeared I had lost all my To Do's. No problem, I thought, I'll just enter Time Machine and restore them. Yet when I entered Time Machine (viewing my To Do's in Mail), my To Do's were grayed out – I couldn't click on them to restore them! I opened up iCal and tried the same, but much to my chagrin iCal refused to open up in Time Machine and instead the Finder would appear in front of the iCal window and I would enter Time Machine viewing the Finder.
Luckily, when trying to re-add my To Do's from memory, they all miraculously re-appeared.
My question now is… what gives? I thought Time Machine backed up everything. Not mostly everything?!

I read that Time Machine does not have this interactive restore function for iCal. Yes, it is shocking, but that's Apple for you. Brilliant in some areas, but just can't get it in others.
For example, you cannot sync iCal's to-do tasks with an iPhone.
I don't think Apple gets it that to-do's are important to people.
Apple, if you read this, please don't delete this, but take it on board as feedback. To-do tasks are probably the most important thing for busy people, because our lives consist of getting things done. This really is a major oversight by Apple, when it designed Leopard.

  • How do I access iCloud Calendar & Contact data from a pre-Lion iMac?

How do I access iCloud Calendar data from my pre-Lion iMac?
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac4,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
System 10.7 is not available for this iMac.
Since MobileMe has died, and my other iMac is running 10.7 Lion, iCloud is now the fact in Apple internet data sharing.
I'd like to keep my Address Book (now Contacts in 10.7) and Calendar in sync with my pre-10.7 iMac.  How is this done?
    Many Thanks,
    PBH

A nice idea, but ≈$100 for far more than I need. It feels like overkill.
I was thinking something more like a simple CalDAV connection.

  • I just upgraded to the new mobile me calendar and now all my calendar entries on iCal have been erased. As I type this the calendar entries are still on the mobile me and iphone calendars. How do I restore the calendar entries to iCal?

I just upgraded to the new mobile me calendar and now all my calendar entries on iCal have been erased. As I type this the calendar entries are still on the mobile me and iphone calendars. How do I restore the calendar entries to iCal?

Please always post your System details when you have a query. The upgrade to the new MobileMe calendar produces different results, and different problems, with different versions of OSX.
Snow Leopard: during the upgrade process your iCal calendars should be moved to MobileMe (this can take some time and you have to wait for it to happen). Once done, your iCal reads the calendars from MobileMe so any changes made in either place will be visible immediately. If this has not happened then this Apple Tech Note provides instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3397
Leopard: when the upgrade is completed iCal on Leopard will not be able to see the MobileMe calendars until an additional process is carried out, detailed in this Apple Tech Note:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4330
Tiger: iCal on Tiger cannot read the MobileMe calendars, period. The only workaround is to upgrade to Leopard, or Snow Leopard if possible (Intel Mac required).

  • Some calendars in iCal appear corrupted but OK on iPhone. If I sync will the calendar data on the phone restore info on the desktop iCal? any other ideas for how to sort this please?

Some calendars in iCal appear corrupted (ie have red exclamation mark by them) but are still OK on iPhone. If I sync, will the calendar data on the phone restore info on the desktop iCal or will I lose that as well? Or could I back up the calendars on my iPhone somewhere and then import them into iCal? any other ideas for how to sort this please? it's driving me mad. thanks.

I don't think there will be a solution to this. Exchange 2003 just isn't supported.

I'm trying a full restore in Lion, but it won't. States that there isn't enough space on the Mac HD. How do I restore everything from a recent Time Machine Backup?

Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

I can only tell you based on what I see w/ my iPhone...
When I plug in my iPhone I get the following icon on the top bar:
If I click on that (that's when it turns blue), I get a sidebar.  At the top I see this while it is syncing:
The circle-arrows spin.  Once the sync is finished, I see this:
I then know the sync is over and I click on the Eject icon that replaced the circle-arrows.
    Are you seeing something different?

  • Restoring from Lion Time Machine backup and keeping Lion recovery partition

I am installing a new hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I have a Time Machine backup of everything, but I'm aware that just restoring the Time Machine backup to the new drive will not restore the Lion recovery drive/partition. What is the best way to move my data to the new drive? Am I best doing a clean install and moving everything over by hand from the Time Machine backup?

I've just done this. I booted from a Lion Recovery USB stick then restored from a Time Capsule. I had no RecoveryHD partition after it.
However, if you download and run the Lion installer once you log in to your desktop it will re-create the RecoveryHD partition. Long way round though.
Best solution is to make a bootable USB (8GB) or DVD from the Lion installer App. Then do a new install of Lion to get the Recovery HD partition created. Once installed you can restart and boot up using the newly created Recovery HD and restore your entire computer from the Time Capsule. Hey presto, your computer should be back to the way it was.

Do I turn in the new laptop for a pre-Lion rebuild to keep Snow Leopard, or do I return new computer and get upgraded memory to improve performance of existing MacBookPro?  I'm mostly still happy with existing MacBookPro, but Aperture doesn't work, the computer can't handle it.
