Restoring quicktime to original length after "trim to selection" debacle.

After trimming a selection in Quicktime Pro, I accidentally saved the file, now I have a one-minute clip that is 9.7 GB on the hard drive. I'm using QTpro 7.1.5, how do I get my file back to the original length?
I have seen this issue post on this forum twice before, and have tried the replace "free" with "moov" fixes posted there. However, that solution was for a QT 7.0 file, and there are some discrepancies ("[free" is "fREe" and when I change it to "moov", I get an unopenable file).
A freind suggested dragging the whole thing into Final Cut, does anyone know if that will work?
Please help.

hi lown,
I had the same problem as you, accidentally saved an unwanted trim over my original quicktime file. I found a solution based on this discussion:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4136088&#4136088
Basically you need a Hex editor to search and replace "free" to "moov" in the quicktime file. You can use a Hex editor like this one called Hex Fiend,
http://www.ridiculousfish.com/hexfiend/
The thing is not to use "find and replace all" instead, only find the "free" that makes sense in a line, instead of the ones combined together with other characters (without spacing).
Hope it works for you. After you edited it, save it as a separate file.

  • Restoring play counts & original data after reformat

I reformatted my computer and followed the steps online to restore my library, by importing my iTunes Library xml file from the desktop (and then dragging My Music into the iTunes window). Although I was able to obtain all of my original playlists, none of the play counts, or dates added, or similar, were restored.
If someone has any ideas about how to correct this, would be much appreciated!

    You are guessing right
After a reformat, the best way to restore your third party apps is to reinstall from their install disks. SuperDuper or Time Machine can certainly restore your Applications folder but in many cases you will need associated files. There's the rub. It's rarely the application but the associated file that is the problem. My user tip on where important data is stored may help.
Have you tested your apps in a new user account?
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Photobooth deleted original video after trimming

So I was able to record (using photo booth) the revealing of my pregnancy to my husband; it was priceless. I really wanted to show my family the video but thought I should trim it up for them. Unfortunately I no longer have the original version that I would've loved to keep for ourselves. Is there anything i can do??

Taking out this feature really annoyed me too. I assume they deliberately did it to simplify things for the common user who keeps getting synchronization errors when he tries to funnel .mov files in iTunes to his iOS device. I also assume the software is still capable of this exporting and that they didn't remove the feature from the architecture, but rather just took out the interface to it. It wouldn't surprise me if in the following weeks some people with knowledge on the subject came up with some more information on this.
In the mean time though, rather than downgrading back to Snow Leopard or dual booting it, you could also opt to install Quicktime 7 side by side with the current version. Version 7 has all the familiar features related to saving in a .mov container and also offers trimming - well, if you have a serial key to unlock the pro features, that is. You might still have this from back in the day, or you could purchase it still on Apple's website for 30 bucks.
I don't think buying Quicktime Pro 7 is absolutely necessary though. I'm not very familiar with this stuff, but I imagine there are some other players out there, free ones, that still offer this feature. I know it's somewhat possible with VLC by using the export wizard and choosing to encapsulate in .mov in the last step, but the resulting file stutters here on my macbook air. I had an old serial key laying around, so I chose for QT7 and didn't bother looking for something else.

  • Syncing iPod After Restoring iPod to Original Settings

I am having a problem syncing my iPod with iTunes after restoring my iPod to it's original settings. I have a 20GB iPod with a click wheel that I recently restored to its original settings because the iPod was locking up. To complete the restore, I had to first force my iPod into disk mode, which allowed me to restore the iPod. After successfully restoring my iPod, I connected my iPod to my computer to sync it with iTunes and download my music library back to my iPod. At first, 3 to 4 songs/podcasts began to download, but then I received the following message:
"Windows-Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\iPod_Control\iTunes. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
My OS is Microsoft XP. I went to the Micosoft webpage, but didn't find any helpful information. If anyone has any suggestions on how to solve this problem, your input would be apprecicated.

When you went to Microsoft, did you find/try the following document?

    Hi cfgolf,
Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
    2. Transfer content
Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
    6. Set up as new
Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.
    Cheers,
    -Joe

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • How to restore display on MacBook Pro to original settings after faulty external display connection

Rookie question, 2009 MacBook Pro.  We bought a dvi-VGA adapter to connect to an external display. Got a picture on the external monitor but very poor resolution.  Meanwhile the display on the MacBook Pro re-set itself and we were not able to restore it to normal even after we disconnected the external monitor.  We now have our MacBook Pro with messed up resolution and display, AND no external display.  How do we get the MacBook Pro back to its default display settings?  Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: MacBook doesn't sleep when closing lid with external monitor attached with Lion     Oct 14, 2011 7:01 PM    (in response to admgtz)
I would like to offer this solution.  I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS.  This behavior stopped when I installed Lion.  They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be.  The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:

Correct AnswerRe: How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?
    Aug 31, 2011 9:56 AM (in response to Bob_viking)
Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args
    Enjoy!
One snag was that I had to run it with the external monitor disabled, but it worked great!

  • How can I save .mov file as another .mov file after trim from Pre9?

I would have thought this would be simple.  Just like I can crop a still image in Photoshop and save it with a new name (or the same name), I expected to be able to trim or split an .mov file in Premiere Elements 9 and save the resulting file(s) under a new name (or the same name) while preserving the same format.
    But SIX hours later, NO.
Instead, after I split or trim the .mov file, it seems to be held hostage inside a project that won't let it go.  I even tried "exporting" it but the choices are different than the properties of the source file (a BAD thing), and the resulting two files from the export are unreadable on my computer (USELESS).
The .mov file was shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.  Windows with Vista.  Adobe Premiere Elements 9.  I also have Photoshop CS5 Extended and Lightroom 3.4.x, if either of those would help.
I'm sure that I'm mistaken,  There MUST be a secret menu option to SAVE-the-trimmed-CLIP-as-a-SOURCE-file.
How could there not be something this basic?

    Quoting Steve:
"I'll say it once more: It's impossible to cut a piece of video and then resave your file.....[because] IT'S [against] THE NATURE OF EDITING VIDEO WITH EVERY VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE IN THE WORLD."
    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ *** ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I'm very pleased to say that I've found out how to do exactly what I wanted to do, despite Steve's strongly stated opinion that it is "impossible."
    I can:
..... trim or split a video
..... and save it under the same name or a different name(s)
..... WITHOUT converting it to something else before or after trimming
..... WITHOUT changing it from its original format
    ..... WITHOUT exporting (compressing) it
..... WITHOUT "rendering" it different in any way except my desired length change (and resulting smaller file size)
This is desireable to me in order to:
..... save many gigs of space on my terabyte drives
..... while retaining source file footage that may be useful in future projects
..... IN ITS ORIGINAL (source) FORMAT !!!!!
    YAY!!!
I got thinking about the software that came with my camera.  I didn't install it because it included things like a program to handle RAW images (and I prefer to use Adobe Lightroom 3) and a program that I thought might be similar to Bridge (and I really like Adobe Bridge).
But I decided to install it and see if there was anything there that would allow me to work with the videos and sure enough, there it was - the ability to trim my videos of the junk while keeping the rest in original perfect format, just as it was shot. From a user's point of view, it is a precise video version of cropping a still image in Photoshop.  EXACTLY what I wanted to do!!!
Here is a collage of the properties box of the "before" version (the original original), collaged together with the  properties box of the "after" version (the trimmed original).  The properties boxes are the properties as reported by Adobe Premiere Elements 9.
In the above-shown collage of the screenshots that I've made for you, you can see that nothing has changed in terms of the properties.  The only changes are the length (because I cut it), the file size (because it is MUCH smaller now), and the name (because I wanted to preserve the original file in order to make a screenshot of its properties for you). I WANT TO REPEAT - the new CUT file is identical to the original, except the unwanted portion has been cropped away. It was NOT compressed, it was NOT rendered, it was NOT exported.  It is a true source file utilizing original footage in its original format.
(This forum limits images to 450 pix wide so to see that all the relevant format properties are the same in both properties boxes, you may have to increase the size through your browser by holding down the [Ctrl] and hitting the "=" key (the one with the "+" above the "=" sign).)
    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ *** ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Here are the steps I took to make the screenshot above:
1 - Opened the original file in Canon ZoomBrowser EX 6.7 (which came with the camera).
2 - Trimmed ("cut") the file by placing a start point and stop point around the desirable footage.
3 - Saved under a different file name.  (NOTE:  This was a true save, NOT an export, NOT a "render" of some sort.)
4 - Switched to Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and started a new "project."
5 - Used "Get Media" to pull the original version and the cut version of the video into the project.  NOTE:  I pulled the cut version in first, so if there had been a format mismatch (as compared with the DSLR-1080p30 @29.97 setting I normally use when creating a new project), Premiere would have said so.  But there was NOT a format mismatch.  And it runs perfectly, just as it did before, including audio.
6 - Right clicked each video and took a screenshot of the properties of each to show you.
And this means I can use the trimmed footage for any purpose down the road, yet I didn't have to save the entire file which included unwanted footage.  And I've saved a considerable amount of space on one of my terabyte drives.
    SUMMARY:
    Easy as pie:
I trimmed the excess off a video WITHOUT "converting," "exporting," "compressing," "rendering" or changing the format away from the original in any way.
No loss of any type of data whether audio or visual or "other."  (Except, of course, the unwanted footage.)

    Hello
Does anyone know if it's possible to change the FCS configuration so that I can view the original media after clicking on video clip icon? Normally this opens proxy files but I would like to change the default behavior.
    thanks
    sj

I don't know if you change the behavior by default.
    But you can for example
    1. Right click the asset and select View - Original Media
    2. Click and drag the asset on top of the Quicktime icon, If the device you're Original Media is located is configure for Edit-In-Place.
    Hope this helps.

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:

  • How to restore slide to original state?

    Hello,
Is there a quick way to restore original state of a slide?
In my project, slide changes dramatically after user's actions (a lot of objects are hiding and showing). When user returns to that certain slide through custom menu, it looks exactly the way he left it.
But I would like the slide to look "brand new", with all the posible actions untouched and ready to be re-explored.
I relise that one way is writing "mirrored" advanced actions but this is very time-consuming method, considering the size of a project.
Is there any quicker way? Like a designated action or command for restoring slide's original state?

There is no standard function to achieve this.  There are too many ways a Captivate author might have set up their interaction.  Having some function that reset all variables to default settings would be a dangerous thing to use in a course module.
If you have built this interaction, then you should understand how it works and what would need to be reset for a new attempt on the same slide.  It's just part of creating interactions that you (the designer) needs to allow for this requirement.
