Restoring RAID after BIOS reset

I have five disks connected to the Intel Matrix raid controller on my MSI P55-GD65 mobo. Four of them are set up to use RAID as two pairs of mirrors, i.e. I have two 500GB disks that are mirrored and two 1TB disks that are mirrored and one other disk that is connected to the controller but is not part of a RAID configuration but has my installation of Windows 7 on it. This has been working like this for over 18 months now.
Last night I changed some setting in the BIOS to try get my new memory to run at 1600Mhz. Long story short: it didn't work so I reset the BIOS using the jumper on the mobo.
I've since only been able to boot the mobo when the BIOS has the RAID controller settings set to "IDE". But when I do that I see each of the four "RAIDed" disks as individual disks in Windows. If I set the RAID Controller to "RAID" in the BIOS I get the RAID controller bios prompt (Ctrl+I) and can see everything is set up there correctly - i.e. It can see the two mirrors and the one other disk. But on trying to boot I get "select proper boot device blah blah blah".
In the boot device order page in the BIOS with the Intel controller set to "RAID" the one disk that is on the raid controller but that isn't part of a RAID configuration (i.e. my Windows disk) shows up with the prefix "RAID:".  It's as if the BIOS doesn't know it isn't actually a raid disk.
I've even tried moving the windows disk to the separate SATA 7 port on the mobo to no avail.
I'm at the point where I've backed up my windows partition and I'm about to re-install Windows, although this sounds too dramatic! surely there's a way around this!?!

have you checked hard-disk priority in bios?

  • P35 Neo2 - OS died, need help restoring RAID after re-install of XP

I have a P35 Neo2 with on-board Intel RAID.  I need a bit of help getting a two drive RAID going again after reinstalling XP.
    Here's my situation:
Same hardware, MB, etc. I originally set up the system with a 20gb IDE and two 320gb SATA drives. I put the OS on the 20gb, and set the two 320's up as a RAID. I partitioned the 320's into 200gb + 120gb sections on each drive. The 200gb partitions were mirrored between the two drives, and the remaining 120gb on each drive was used as non-RAID storage space.
I picked up a nasty virus-spyware a month or two ago that I was struggling to find a fix for when the OS began to BSOD. I put the 20gb IDE to the side, and put a 40gb IDE in it's place. I re-installed XP on it last night, and now need to get the RAID up and running again.
I went into Disk Management and it showed three dynamic drives with a yellow triangle icon and labeled 'foreign'. I right clicked and found an option to 'import'. I clicked on import and a window popped up showing all of the partitions and logical drives I had previously created on the two drive RAID. I figured I was in business, so I clicked OK.
Disk Management now shows one dynamic disk as 'Online', but still shows two as 'Foreign'. If I right click on them, and chose import, I get the same window showing my partitions and logical drives, but if I click OK, I get a warning message that: "Some of the volumes you are importing will lose data because you have not moved all of your disks to the system."
I'm in over my head at this point, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    GeoD

A 200gb partition is restored, but the 120gb is not, which is confusing. ALso, when I look at the logical drives in the partition, I'm beginning to think I had the 200gb mirror /120 gb storage backwards. The data restored is not something I would be concerned with losing. It's installed applications, and multimedia files that I could lose without worry.
There is also 70gb dynamic drive labeled Missing.  I know I left a small portion of all three of the drives unallocated as a reserve, so that must be what this is. It's like the RAID info is incomplete which leads me to the next piece of info.
Something I didn't initially mention for the sake of brevity, was when I right-clicked on 'Import Disk' the applet noted the disk was 3/3. I assumed that meant disk 3 of 3 disks. I've since begun to wonder if I imported the disks in the wrong order. ie) I should have imported disk 1/3 first.
Do you know how to clear out Disk Mgt's info, so I can start over?
I also noticed only one of the 320 SATA's shows up in Device Mgr, (DM). What I found both confused me and encouraged me.
When I created the array, I named the the drives RAID0 and RAID1. They both show up in DM. But only one of them shows up as the drive model: WDC WD3201ABYS-01B9A0. There should be two of them.
The OS knows there should be a RAID, but for some reason only one of the drives show up as hardware.  I rebooted and checked the data and power supply cables, (connected), the BIOS, (both drives show up) and both drives show up in Disk Mgt.  Just not in DM.
Does that mean the HD has died?
Part of my difficulty is I had a brain injury in 2001, followed by another in 2003. The 2nd injury caused 6 months of what the docs call it a walking coma - I walked and talked, but have no memory of the time.
When I 'woke up' in the Fall of 2003, I found I had lost considerable cognitive function and other problems.  These problem have ended up disabling me, (I'm now on SS Disability).
Until then I had been a 'System Admin' for micro-businesses, (max - 15 computers). I built systems and servers, installed networks, maintained them and did all the support. Basically I was these company's Sys Admin on an as-needed basis.
One thing I lost was the ability to troubleshoot and repair hardware. Combined with other cognitive problems, I was forced into closing my business. At the time, I was maintaining close to fifty offices; ~20 had Peer-to-Peer networks & ~20 had servers I had built.
What's doubly frustrating is I was just getting ready to sign up with an online backup service when I got hit with a nasty malware/virus that's so new there's no info on the 'net about it. I got entangled in trying to fix it and spaced out the online back up. Now I find myself in a situation where I desperately need to restore the data on these RAID drives.  Because of the memory problems I now have, I completely depend on my computer as an auxiliary 'brain' - I have stuff on these drives that I have to have.
I didn't do much with RAID when I was still in the biz, and this is the first time I've had problems with a RAID of my own, so I'm struggling to figure this stuff out.
Should I be able to install one of these drives by itself so I can get the data from it? The way I understand the theory of RAID is that if one drive dies, you can put another in and the mirrored portion will re-create itself on the new drive.  Couldn't that be a way to get the important data off the drive or drives if they don't want to go back together as a RAID?
I could back each up to the online service and then just rebuild them.  Not my first choice, but it would reduce my stress level if I thought I could do it.
Sorry to go on, but now you can see why I'm both struggling & worried.
Thanks for any info or help.

  • Cannot restore data after hard reset

    Hi,
I had to recently do a hard reset on my Tungsten E. I tried to restore the data from Palm Desktop as indicated on the support website. Unfortunately, the synchronisation fails because Hotsync is not able to recognize the user name. Hotsync on my device indicates that no user name is currently implemented, while Palm desktop is currently set to my old user name.
I would appreciate any advise on this issue.
    Thanks.

  • Boot Loop after BIOS reset

Some kids at the school I am stated at put passwords on the BIOS, so we used the pins next to the BIOS chip to reset the BIOS.
This has worked to clear the BIOS passwords, but it has had the unfortunate side-effect of putting any computer we do this to into an endless boot loop.
The computer gets as far as a screen where an option to "start windows normally" (among others) appears.   Sometimes the windows xp logo can feintly and briefly be seen before the computer restarts its self.
I have re-created the issue with computers that didn't have passwords on the BIOS by resetting it anyway and the symptom persists.
What am I missing?  I've tried using the BIOS options to optimize the setting and I've also take a compter that does boot (same make / model) and mantually copied over the settings in the BIOS.
Still can't get it to boot.
I can flat load linux to it, but windows won't take, either via a PXE boot or disk.  The install seems to go so far as to unpacking the files, but isn't able to boot into windows sufficiently to do the rest of the install.
    :s
Any help would be greatly appreceated as we now have 11 out of 24 computers doing this.

I would like to add, whilst I was using the pin clips on the pins near the bios chip, I let the system run until it would beep.  During this time, the CPU fan ran really really hard.  Have I damaged the CPU somehow?

  • NEO4 Plat Sli SIL3231 Raid problem - Can't boot after BIOS Flash!

Hi, I have and Neo4 Platinum SLI. I had "the problem" a while back with the nVida raid where there was a hang on shutdown. I then created a RAID0 using my two Rators on the SIL3132 controller, and have three hitachi drives hooked up to SATA1 - SATA3. Back then, I had trouble getting my SIL3132 array to be the main boot volume. I could boot when no other drives were attached, but as soon as I attached them, I get the boot disk error after post. Somehow I got it to work, but not think this time, I flashed the BIOS and ran into the same problems, as the BIOS got reset.
First, I went in and re-enabled RAID on the sil3132 controller, and change the boot order to have the RAID voluime be the first boot device, and my other drivers be the next on down the line. Upon rebooting, my system hangs after verifying DMI pool at a blanksscreen for 5 - 10 minutes then gives my the "missing HAL.dll error". if I go back into the BIOS and disable SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 my computer boots just fine. I even completley disconnected my three drives an my system boots just fine. I have searched these forums and could not find anything close to my issue and wondered if it is something I am just missing in the setup. I will say that at POST my IDE devices has always read:
    IDE Primary Master [None]
    IDE Secondary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave (my first DVD/R drive)
IDE Secondary Slave (My second DVD/R drive)
IDE Third Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fourth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fifth Master (a 250gb drive)
    IDE Sixth Master [None]
Is this normal? all my hard drives are SATA. the raptors and three SATAII drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since the Nvida raid problem seems to have been fixed (as far as I read) I would like to go back to using the nVidia raid controller. I just need to back up my system first!
    Thanks in advance.

    Jkmet,
I have noted the same problem, with a USB Pen drive.
If I leave it plugged in and shut down, the next time I cold boot it tries to boot for the pen drive.  What I found out the any time you add a drive before booting the BIOS places it at the top of the Hard Drive Priority list making it the boot drive.  Same thing happens when I plug in a new SATA and does not mater where it is connected.  So, what I have to do any time you add a drive with the power off you have to boot to BIOS reset the Hard drive priority list, then save, exit and reboot to boot from you windows drive.
I am sure this is a BIOS Bug, but MSI states that the way it should would work.
    Roger

You can restore your backup whenever you want from iTunes or iCloud, depending where you made it.

I believe you are missing the point. The OP has already restored from back up, but failed to include a specific app in the back up and is trying to recover data for it, which in this case is not possible.

  • Array RAID 0 after bios updating

I'm going to create an RAID 0 array with the Intel ICH5R but one question rises: if I upgrade my bios after creting the RAID 0 array, will I lose all my data?
Is it sufficient to recreate the array after bios flashing to have back all my data?
    I hope to be clear.
    Thanks

no, upgrading BIOS won't kill your data. It will only at most, lost the array information. All you need to do is to re-set the array info once more and your data is still "as is".

  • X99s Questions - Raid, Overclocking, BIOS config

    Hi,
I just got x99s SLI - pretty happy so far. I am running 5820k at 3800mhz (oc genie), and h80i liquid cooler. Installation was a walk in the park. Fastboot is insanely quick.
I have run into a problem however.
I am running stripe raid from two 512gb Corsair SSD's. On first config everything went great - just over 1gb/s transfer rates for both read and write. Perfect.
Excuse me if I sound dumb below, I am just an enthusiast, not an expert.
After installing updates via MSI Live Update, and working my way to updating bios from 1.30 to 1.40 - the bios was reset and raid was lost.
I tried reconfiguring raid through bios again - but one of the volumes was configured as RAID and other wasn't. So I could never select one of them to 'rebuild' the existing raid. I remember doing this two system builds ago and it worked great. I in fact moved the drives to another system and was able to get them recognized as system volume and boot on new hardware.
    So Question 1 is:
What is the MSI expected way of managing through losing RAID configurations? This might happen again if bios is reset due to updates or some overclocking problem.
    Question 2:
Is there some way of saving bios configuration out? Can it be preserved between bios updates?
    Question 3:
Does MSI/Intel offer any utilities to rebuild RAID volumes?
    Question 4:
I've lost ability to CTRL+I (thats screen doesn't come up anymore), once I've configured the first RAID. Should all configurations be done only through UEFI?
    Thank you!
    Otherwise love my new build.

to 1: Re-enable the RAID config should auto restore predefined and existing RAID config
to 2: Nope, this would be potential dangerous with risk of brick boards.
Saving BIOS settings should be only used [saved & restored] if they are from the same BIOS versions.
Using them on different BIOS versions would cause a mess up and could brick the BIOS
to 3: this usually can be done with Intel® Rapid Storage Technology tool:
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-029023.htm
check your mainboard manual at page B-10 for details

  • Qosmio F50-10Z - After BIOS update illuminated buttons don't work

Tempro alerted me about a BIOS update - bios-20090415092322.zip - for 32bit Vista, released 15 April 2009, for my F50-10Z.
Since then, the illuminated 'buttons' atop my keyboard no longer work - including, annoyingly, the button to turn off the illumination.
Is there anything I can do at this point? I tried a system restore, but it didn't affect the BIOS.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
I had previously tried reinstalling the Value Added Pack, to no avail (in fact I lost my special function keys also, which I got back via system restore), but after a bios reset it did the job.
For anybody reading this after the event, to restore BIOS to defaults on a Qosmio f50,
    restart
    hit f2
    hit f9 (then indicate yes)
    hit f10 (indicate yes)
I don't poke around in BIOS myself, having a healthy fear of the unknown, but I guess something had gone askew somewhere.
I also found a little program called dimmer.exe which can actually turn off the lights if they are stuck on. For the record, I had the lights switched off when I reset the BIOS and reinstalled VAP
Thank you both for your assistance.

Hi farai, welcome to the HP Forums. If your computer appears to be powering on, but you cannot see the screen it may be a recoverable situation.
This document will help you diagnose the issue, it looks like you have already done Step 1 (hard reset):
Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8)
If you get to Step 3, the options listed won't work since you indicated you cannot get into your BIOS. In place of Step 3 in that document, you can try to restore your BIOS using this method: Restoring the BIOS
If you get to the end, it says to call HP. If so, it is most likely a hardware issue and you should call support for more options: HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.
I hope this helps. If you need any more information, let me know.
