Restoring selected files on new computer?

Hi everyone.  I am setting up a new macbook pro.  I have my old one backed up on time machine.  My old macbook pro is a work owned, leased computer so it has a startup popup and extra accounts made by the techs that prepared it for lease.  I want to transfer my music and documents from time machine onto my new computer (which is not leased - I have purchased this one) but I don't want the popups and other lease realted things from my old computer to transfer.  On setup, "transfer information to this mac" will it transfer everything from time machine or can I select what I want to transfer?
I hope this makes sense.  I am not game to proceed with setup until I get an answer.
cheers, Bill

Consider using Target Disk Mode:

Probably the simplest and fasted method of transferring selected files between two Macs.
Ciao.

  • How can get 40,000 pix from old computer restored by Carbonite to new computer into PE 11 or 12?

I bought a new,  faster, more storage Windows 8 computer.
I had 40,000 pix on old computer tagged with names, event, location, date with PE 11. Also several projects involving hundreds of pix.
Carbonite restored all files (250 gig) from old computer to new, and their tech support says they all are on the new computer.
I bought the new PE 12 and installed it on new computer.  It has only found 4,000 pix.  I don't at all like PE 12 after enjoying PE2-11 and managing all my  pix with it.  PE11 was clearer in the pix presentation.
Apparently when imported to the new computer, I lost the tags that went to events, location, and the person tags did not  separate family from friends etc.  I can't even find my projects.
I was so frustrated with PE12, that I installed PE11, but everytime I try to open the Organizer, it doesn't open.
Help.  I am so frustrated.  I am pretty sure  before I made the transition that I had written all tags to files.  When I put PE11 on the new computer, why won't it give me what I had on the old.
This is probably my 10th generation computer change, and I never had such problems before with PE.

I am using 10 and 11 instead of 11 and  12.  I tried to go back and edit,
but couldn't figure out how.  Sorry,  typing errorC.

how do i select files on my computer to back up to the cloud?

    Hi Tholley,
You could either upload them using a browser at https://creative.adobe.com/files or using the file sync feature in Creative Cloud.

  • How do I use Time Machine to restore applications to a new computer?

    Hello again
I just upgraded to a newer computer (not brand new, though: 20" imac with intel core 2 duo).
I traded in the older one and the files from it were transferred over, but not the applications.
Now, a year ago I took my tech friend's advice and used TM to back up the whole hard-drive .... so last night i used TM and navigated through Finder to see that all the applications are there in the Application folder. Tech friend said that i could just restore the Application Folder .... but this isn't an actual install .... so what other folders will i need to restore?
Or should I just restore the whole hard drive? .. if i do this, will it copy over Snow Leopard too? cause the imac only came with leopard and i just had to install snow and then it took all night to get the upgrades and install them !
Thanks for any advice and help.
    Elizabeth

I would recommend you just reinstall the applications from their original distribution discs. Some applications require files that are not installed in the Applications folder alone. You would need to know what specific ones to look for. Reinstalling a whole system or major folder from an old TM backup will surely render a malfunctioning system unless the system you would be restoring is known to work on that computer. For more on using Time Machine see:
A  whole  lot  about  Time  Machine for help with TM problems.  Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM.  See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • How can I open an ms8 demo file on new computer?

    Hi!
I have some amount of important & big schematic files stored under Multisim 8.x Evaluation version. After big lightning strike unfortunately I lost almost all of hardware in my PC and now I have new mobo, hdd etc., and cannot open backuped ms8 files. It says: "Could not open the selected file, because it was saved on another machine using a demo version of the program. You can only open this file using a demo or regular version of the program installeed on the same computer as where the file was saved" & " The (...).ms8 file was not recognized as a valid file format"
But this old computer don't exists now. :/
Even under Multisim 10.0.1 Power Pro REGULAR version on my friends system while opening those ms8 files it says:
"An unknown error occured while accesing E:\(...).ms8. I tried also under Multisim 10 Eval. and... nothing!
Files are on HDD (copied from CD backup) and worked properly with old system. Is there ANY chance of open .ms8 files?? Or saving them under DEMO version was terrible mistake and I lost them forever even if I still have them physically?
    Any help, please?

    Hello,
Unfortunately you are encountering a security feature of Demo version of Multisim.
There might still be a solution to your application, for this, you would need your previous HDD.
Is it still usable? Try to recover the data using the tools available on internet, and then just use the old HDD in the new PC.
There is a chance that the files will work, also, look for the Security Copies of your previously built applications. More info:

       Best regards,

  • Transfer user files to new computer without creating new user?

I know this is probably listed on here, but I have searched for two days and have not found it. I am very confused and frusterated. I set up my new iMac on wednesday running Lion. When I originally tried migration in setup assistant, the only way to migrate computer to computer was over the wifi. After that failed/froze three times (I am thinking because my home internet is too slow?) I just skipped that set in setup so I could use my computer. After reading some posts, I saw that I could migrate by essentailly making my old computer (macbook pro) an external hard drive and holding down the "T" key when I restarted. When it said I cannot transfer that user with the same name to the new computer, I changed the name.  That worked must faster and transfered all my stuff over. I went to set up my itunes and iphoto and noticed that I couldn't find those migrated files. I read another post saying that i now have another user and have to log out and log into that user to get the files. I don't want two users, I want one that has all my stuff! Now maybe I did something wrong or don't totally understand the process, but is there a way for that to be done?? I have read I can delete the "admin" account that my computer created somehow and just use the old computers migrated user as my main account or just leave them both. Which is the better option here? Appreciate any help anyone can give. Thank you for your time.

You did nothing wrong, but you did misunderstand the process. Here are your options:
Log out of the account you created in Setup Assistant and log into the account you migrated from your old computer. Open Accounts preferences, click on the lock icon and enter the admin password for the migrated account. Select the account created in Setup Assistant and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. Select the third removal option. You now have one user account - the renamed account you migrated from your old computer.
Create a third temporary account. Name it "temp" and use "temp" as the password (no quotes.) Give this new account admin status. Log out of the current account and log into temp. Now delete both of the other accounts. Then connect the other computer via Firewire cable as you did before. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. Now re-migrate your old account using Migration Assistant. After the migration has completed log out of temp and log into your old account. Delete the temp account. This will give you one account with the same username you were using originally.

  • Best way to move files to new computer?

Struggling to move about 10,000 files from my old computer to new computer. PSE10 in both computers running on windows 7 pro. Trying to use an external hard drive, but ending up with some empty folders; and the pop up says the images are already in the catalogue. I see all the files in explorer but can't get all of them visible in all folders?
Would I have done better connecting each computer directly?
Basically I'm asking what is the best method to copy/move files when upgrading to a new computer?

That is what I tried first with my Seagate external hard drive, but it would not allow restore on a different computer. It seems Seagate requires purchase of additional program to allow sharing to a different computer. So I tried using my older Lacied external hard drive with only 80gb which is less than my total catalogue size; so I could not do a simple backup and restore; so I manually dragged and dropped what would fit, ending up with the missing folders I mentioned. I just did a reconnection of files and think I finally have all folders full.
So Seagate was a waist of money. What external hard drives work well for a backup and restore, as you suggest? Or does someone else have some other recommendations?

  • Restoring v8 catalog to new computer with v12

i have just bought a new computer with windows 8 and installed elements version 12; my old laptop had elements version 8 on it and I did a full backup of the catalog to an external hard drive.  I have gone through the restore catalog process but cant see any photos either in the organiser or in my pictures.  I did the convert step but it said it conversion failed and suggested repairing the backup with previous version which is not possible as the computer was a work machine which has now been wiped and rebuilt and I dont have version 8 anymore!! when it did the convert step it only seemed to find breeze files.  I'm now stuck as to what to do next - can anyone help, please

The renamed catalog folders with the suffix 1 or 1 1 are in the PSE8 format.
Your PSE10 converted catalog should have the old name.
It should contain the database file : catalog.pse12db.
First be sure that your explorer is set to show hidden files, then search in the explorer for that catalog.pse12db file.
Double click on the catalog.pse12db file to open PSE12 with the new restored catalog.
Does it work for you ?

  • Migration Woes of DW .ste Files To New Computer

I having having problems importing DW CS3 .ste files to a new computer.  I transferred all my websites files over to the new computer using the same file/folder structure as the old one.  I also Exported all the .ste files via DW's Site > Manage Sites into a folder on my old desktop which I then copied over to the desktop of the new computer.  And, I successfully installed DW on the new computer.
However, when I try to Import any of .ste files via DW Site > Manage Sites (menu is empty at this point in time), I am prompted to "choose local root folder for site (name here)". This last ("choose") step is not mentioned in the online DW help.  And, no matter what folder I choose (I've tried many, many ways), in the Manage Sites menu I have one site identified but the content in the Files Panel is just a list of all the .ste files, not that site's files and folders as I was exptecting.  Very confusing and frustrating.
Any suggestions on how I can resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

If you are using a Windows 7 machine (or perhaps it will also work in Vista) Try this:
Make sure that your site files exist on your computer in the correct location - for instance Inetpub/wwwroot/yoursitename/
Make sure that you have an image file in the folder.
    In Dreamweaver, open sites/manage sites/import
    Navigate to the ste file.
When asked for a local site folder, navigate to the folder and open it.
Select any folder within it (notes is fine) and click open.
When asked for an images folder, click on the images folder and open it.
Click on any folder within it (notes is fine) and click open.
This should then set up the site. Exit the file manager and you should be shown a list of files for your site.
I have just done this in the last few minutes with no problem.
If you do not select a folder within your site (rather than the site folder) you will not get the correct location. Its a windows 7 thing, not a Dreamweaver problem.

  • Need help with transferring DW files to new computer

I purchased a second computer - installed DW on new computer
and connected to server - but am having a problem getting the site
    files installed correctely.
On comp#1, in the sidebar I can switch between local and
remote -- and there are arrows to upload or download files. On new
computer I don't see that. New computer has Vista, would that
change the look of the DW program?

    > installed DW on new computer and connected to
    > server - but am having a problem getting the site files
    installed correctely.
    go to old computer.
    open dw.
    dw menu-->site-->Manage Sites
select a site (in cs3, you can shift-click to select entire
    list)
    and press the export button.
    repeat for all sites.
then move the .ste files AND all the "local site folders"
    that contain the
site assets to the other computer.
double-click the .ste file, or use dw
    menu->site->import
you will have to double-check these three places in each site
    definition:
    Local info:
    Local site folder path
    default image folder path
    Site:
    location of this site's "homepage"
-->IF anything on the path to the local files is different
    on this computer.

  • On loading backup file to new computer, I keep getting an error message.

I have been trying to move my bookmarks to a new computer using the backup file which I prepared and stored on my external hard drive, but I keep getting an error message.

What error message do you get?
    Can you attach a screenshot?
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem
*Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
*Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
Make sure that the bookmarks backup file has the correct (lowercase) file extension:
    * .html for a HTML backup (needs to be imported and merges bookmarks)
    * .json for a JSON backup (needs to be restored and replaces bookmarks)
You can check the file type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "Firefox > New Tab > Open File" or "File > Open File".
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup shows as a web page with clickable links.
A JSON backup starts with: <b><nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":</nowiki></b>
An HTML backup starts with: <b><nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki></b>
Verify the file type in the Properties via the right-click context menu to make sure that the change has been successful.
Windows hides some file extensions by default.
Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension.
You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

I would very much appreciate any advise on how to resolve the following error.
I created a complicated sequence on my old computer with Premeier 2.0 I saved this file with the origional sourse files to an external hard drive.
I purchased a new computer and loaded it with CS3. I loaded the original sequence file and the source files on the new compute.
I have tried to open this file wit CS3, hoping to continue editing.
    The following message is displayed:
"The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the origional files type (audio and video)"
I have opened a sourse file on the new computer with Media Player to check and the file still contains both audio and video.
I would very much apprecite any help if anyone knows how to resolve this.

  • Locked (scanned) files on new computer

I already uninstalled Elements on old computer and installed on new. Files are all on external hard drives and I simply copied catalog over to new PC.
Catalog opens fine and I can see all my photos. But can't open them to edit or even rotate in organizer because they are locked ...?!
ANY WAY to fix this without uninstalling on this computer, reinstalling and exporting from old one, uninstalling that then re-installing on new??
    Thanks for any help!
    vicki ;-)
**UPDATE -- only SOME of the pictures ave this problem, so maybe it has nothing to do with the new computer**  I was able to use Windows Explorer to right-click properties and copy them without any personal attributes, import those copies into the catalog and work ok on them. Maybe a function of the scanner from that batch. I'll check earlier scans when I have time.

    Where is your computer's backup?
Did you lose all important data or just your iTunes library?
The iPod Touch and iPad are not designed or intended to be backup storage devices.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or iPod, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to re-authorize your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
With your iPod Touch connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPod Touch.
    Repeat with your iPad.
Next, invest in an external drive to be used for backup puposes only and include your iTunes library with your computer's backup along with all other important data - documents, photos, etc.
It isn't a matter of if but when the same will happen again with Windoze.

  • Old computer and ipod play files but new computer and iphone4 will not! why

Well I just found out I have a problem. About a year or so ago I converted an audio tape to AAC by running a line into my iMac G5 and recording the files. Now on my new mac mini snow leopard server I cannot get the files to play, but when trying to play it on my old iMac G5 there is no problem. I have it set as an audiobook since it's some tapes that go along with a textbook I use for teaching.
If I sync the files on my iPhone 4, they will not play. If I sync them on my old ipod with clickwheel (40GB) they play fine (synced from my new computer), and they play fine on a Windows 7 machine running iTunes. So I cannot figure out what is my problem.
I have tried converting the files a million different ways on the old machine and the new machine without any luck.
Does it have something to do with the new quicktime integration with Snow Leopard?

may have to restore as new http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212

  • Itunes library cannot locate files on new computer

I've attempted to transfer my itunes library from one computer to another; however, when I click on the music, I get an error message:  "the file for the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found".  I attempted to import the library using Homesharing initally, then attempted to transfer it via an external harddrive.  When the computer is connected to the external harddrive, the music will play.

I know how infuriating it can get and how you start to doubt your own sanity. The best thing is to go back to basics.
    1) Locate your actual music files.
If you look on your new computer, by default your music should be stored in my music\itunes\itunes media\ if you cannot see folders in there which contain your music it is fair to assume the media isnt on your computer. I tend to suspect that the music is on your external hard drive which is why it plays when you have that plugged in.
If you find the music on your hard drive I would go into preferences in itunes and tick the option in advanced that I mentioned previously, then, in itunes go to file and "add folder to library". If you cannot see the menu bar which contains "file - edit - view - controls - store - help"   you may need to press ctrl B to show it, alternatively if you click on the little box in the top left corner of the itunes screen and drop the menu and select "show menu bar"
So now when you press the add folder to library simply browse to where your actual music files are, find the folder which has all you r music etc in it and then click "select folder" in the bottom right of the window.
If you have done all that correctly and have ticked the "Copy media to itunes folder when adding library" option in "edit / preferences / advanced" your music should be copied from your external hard drive into the itunes folder and all should then work properly.
Fingers crossed lets hope thiat works for you.
Just a thought - if that creates duplicate entries in itunes then I would select all your music in itunes and delete it, then go through the above again so you only have the one set of music.
