Restoring Sent Mail from a crash

Hi,
I was cleaning up (removing large files) from my Sent mail that resides on my Mac. I clicked out of it and the remembered I needed to find a recently sent email.
So, I clicked back it while the wheel was still spinning and it crashed. All the sent mail disappeared. I rebooted but it did not index any mail. The folder now houses only today's sent mail. It used to go back to 2005 and is my bible.
However, my Libraries/Mail/Mailboxes/Sent Messages (XXXX).mbox still has 857 MB. So the sent mail is still there but not registering. Or so it appears.
Any thoughts on how to restore it? Thanks!
Paul

Hi Paul,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums!
I'm sure you probably realize that you were very close to the stated limit for the size of a mailbox (I think the limit is 1GB).
I'm not a Mail expert by any stretch but what happens if you quit Mail.app and then double click on the Sent Messages.mbox? Does Mail.app open and show the sent mail again?
If that doesn't do it, do you have the option to Rebuild the mailbox with Mail.app open from the Mailbox Menu?
If Mail.app freezes up while attempting either of these two approaches you should be able to use the Force Quit keyboard command (command + option + escape).

  • Restoring sent email from IMAP account using Time Machine backup

I see others are having trouble with sent mail after Snow Leopard upgrades, but I think I have a different issue.
After my domain host's most recent 12-hour downtime, I shifted my domain's email hosting to Google. Everything's working fine sending and receiving, but now I'm missing a year's worth of sent email from that account. It's all backed up on Time Machine, but I'm looking for advice on how to restore the backed up sent mail from Time Machine while preserving the couple of weeks' worth of sent email that's in the Mail app's sent box for that account now.
    Thanks!

Sorry for the lag time closing this question out. I eventually shut everything down, including the external hard drive, spun everything back up and tried again. (I had been on the correct, earlier backup file and not on the current day, which was why the grayed out restore button was so disconcerting.)
The second attempt worked, but it took two or three tries to retrieve all the sent emails. The first two outings only recovered about 10 days' worth despite having months of sent email selected and available to recover. The third time it grudgingly worked correctly.
The whole experience has left me very wary about Time Machine, frankly. I do thank everyone for their help. I'll post this note in the other forum and so there's a resolution to bot

  • How do I Sync my i-touch with my computer after I've restored my computer from a crash?

How do I Sync my i-touch with my computer after I've restored my computer from a crash? I-tunes only wants to erase all my songs and sync to a blank slate

If all your apps and music are in your iTunes library, try to make a backup of the iPod.  Right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Backup.  Once you have a backup, restore the iPod from thatbackup.  If you can't make a backup (or get a backup from the computer backup) you must restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and sync as necessary.

  • Can't sent mail from outlook

    I'm a mac.com acount user. for a long time.
This changed to me.com and later to Icloud.com.
Since my storage has been set lower on 5GB on 30 sept 2013 its not possible anymore to sent mail from outlook.
On the 30 sept we got a message to delete some files in the icloud because our memory was to high.
But after changing to enough space the problems did not go away.
    error: 0x80004005 de bewerking mislukt.
I can receive all mails from all my .mac and .me accounts.
And I can sent mails from outlook .com, but I don't want to use that
Can someone explain what happened and how to make it work
    Thx

Allan - Here's the other odd thing. Currently, I have my old mail account AND my new MM account both feeding into and out of Outlook. But since adding my MM acct. - even though I set it as my default mail acct. - the hierarchy tree of Outlook folders is still treating my old acct. as king and my new MM acct. as second class. I know, what's that mean? I have my overriding "Personal Folders" folder, with the sub-folders (in addition to customized ones I added) - all of these at the same level - 'Deleted Items'; 'Inbox' (for my old account); 'Junk E-mail'; 'RSS Feeds'; 'Sent Items' and "Search Folders". Then, below that, but at the same hierarchy level as "Personal Folders", I have my MM's root of an IMAP store folder that has as its name my email address, including the "@me.com". Under that, at the same level of importance as my 'Deleted Items', etc. for my old account is my MM account's "Inbox", "Junk E-mail", "Sent" (which, like I said, I created when I sent the first email from my newly created MM account), and "Search Folders"... that's it. If I delete an email from my MM acct., or am in the process of creating an email in my MM acct., I can only find it in the aforementioned "Deleted Items" or "Draft" folders, as my MM acct. doesn't have these. Is this perhaps one indicator of my sent mail synching problem? Or does one have nothing to do with the other? Does Outlook only provide one each of "Drafts", "Deleted Items" and "Outbox" that all accounts share?

  • Recovering Sent Mail from Time Machine

How do I recover all my Gmail Sent Mail from my last Time Machine backup? Accidentally deleted them from Apple Mail, & being IMAP, they've gone from the Gmail server too.  I don't need anything but the Sent Messages (14,000 of them over the last 8 years), have all the Received still, and my mac.com mail account is also still intact.  I just need to recover, specifically, all my Sent Mail messages sent on gmail.  Thanks for any input - and as you can imagine, I'm rather desperate!

Thanks for this, Eric.  When you say do a backup, you mean do a new backup? using Time Machine? - of the current contents of my laptop?  Which will include my almost empty Gmail Sent Messages mailbox.
At the moment (pre-new backup) there is no AoisIMAP item in my Library/Mail/V2 folder - what there is, in terms of Gmail, is:
    Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]/Sent Mail.mbox and also Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]/Sent Messages.mbox.  Are you saying that when I do my new backup, I'll get a new folder in V2 called AoisIMPA/Sent Messages.mbox?
And then, going into my Time Machine, do I go to the last backup I did before the new one (August 16) or do I go into the new backup which I'll have just made?
Thanks so much for helping me with these questions, Eric!
One more weird thing, on my Time Machine backups of my current laptop (an 11" Air), which I've had about 9 months (and last backed up 8/16, that's about 3 weeks before I accidentally deleted my Gmail Sent Messages), NONE of my Sent Gmails are showing in any of the backups I did for it (about 12 over the 9 months), although all the mail, sent or received, on my mac.com and aol.com accounts have been backed and are showing.
On my other Air (13") which I've had a couple of years, my Time Machine backups show my Gmail Sent Messages up to October 30, 2013 but then in every subsequent back up, the Gmail Sent Messages folder is also empty! (Mac.com & aol.com folders are all showing all their mail, throughout all the backups).
Any explanation on that?  Did something happen between Apple & Google?
Thanks again, looking forward to more advice and information.

  • How to sync sent mail from iPhone to MacBook Air mail?

I have sent mail from my iPhone and I want this sent mail to show on my laptop (MacBook Air).  Is there a setting that will allow for this?  I use Apple's Mail on my laptop.
    thanks

    Hi,
To do this, you must be using an IMAP email account type.
If you are using a POP mail account it is not possible.

  • .me mail wiped out from iPhone. Restore desktop Mail from Time Machine how?

Wife using her iPhone (OS 4.0.2) for some reason choose delete all on the mobile me account, which wiped out all of our old email on our iMac. Very important email from many years !
Fortunately, We are running Time Machine on a NAS, so getting the files back isn't a big deal. What I don't know is what I'm supposed to copy over. If I look at users-->library-->mail-->Mac(username)-->INBOX.imapmbox-->messages.. I can still see all the same messages that are showing up in time machine. Is there another file or trick I need to do for the mail app to get all of these messages back in the inbox and everything back to normal ?
    Thanks !

Start Mail and while looking at the mail window, start time machine.
It should come up with the "star field" and you will have all the accounts and mailboxes available as far back as your TM backups go.
From there you can restore your mail.
    Cheers

  • How to important "sent mail" from another account into Mail?

I wasn't sure where to put this question because of the way this forum is organized.
    Anyway, here is my problem:
I woke up thinking I may have forgotten to send an important e-mail yesterday. I thought, "No problem, I won't have to drive all the way to work. I'll just set up Mail on my iMac to use the e-mail account I use at work." It's an SBCGlobal account, so I found most of the information I needed about the mail servers and POP and IMAP and all that stuff that could be termed in a lot more user-friendly language so I don't have a conniption fit trying to figure out what it is I'm doing.
I finally managed to get it set up to where all of the messages from the inboxes were imported into my Mail app. One big problem: I need to look at the *sent* mail, and if I didn't send the e-mail I thought I needed to, I need to access attachments that I sent to others.
So how do I important the sent folder from my work e-mail account into Mail?

I wouldn't doubt it. I work at a small church so we don't have much funding, but we're switching to Gmail. I found an older, unedited print copy of what I was supposed to send and made alterations to that and e-mailed it to the people who needed it. The other thing I was supposed to e-mail isn't essential, I suppose, as it's Sunday's bulletin and everyone will be picking one up tomorrow when they come to church anyway. It's just that I'm fairly new at the position, I love everyone at the church and with whom I work, and I want to do everything right 100% of the time to please them because I'm very Type A. I've been really getting a hang of my job, but it seems there's always one thing that I screw up. I guess I'll get better with experience. And hopefully switching to Gmail, if I do this again, I can just access everything from home.

  • Sent mail from iPhone does not sync with AOL mail

When I send mail from my iPhone, it does not appear in my AOL sent folder.

OK, I figured it out.  I was thinking that when I would sync my iPhone that I would see the pics and videos I took under the iPhone photo and movie tab.  Not the case......I had to locate my iPhone via my computer, then double click on my iPhone and drag and drop the pics and vids into a folder on my hardrive, then via iTunes I could sync that folder.  Then sync my Apple TV!!

  • Can´t import "SENT" mails from Netspace to Apple-Mail

When I imported my mails from Netscape 7 to the Apple "Mail" program it took all but the "SENT" file. What do I have to do ?
    Thanks

I don't know why Mail would import everything except the Sent mailbox, but you would get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.

  • ICloud not showing sent mail from my iMac

Hi all, if I go to iCloud mail and send an email the recipient receives it. However it doesn't show up in my iCloud sent mail. There is sent mail present but that looks to be just emails sent from my BB or iPad. While researching this issue I found this : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3390316 So I went to Mail and yes that "store sent mail on server" was not checked. I then checked it as implied in the above link, but the sent emails still do not show up. Could anyone advise please? TIA, Terry.

I am currently running Mail.app on ML.
My Mail.app and iCloud webmail settings were already congruent with those recommended regarding saving a copy of the Sent emails [Store sent mail upon the iCloud server].
Despite this being the case, I have found that Sent messages were not been getting saved reliably in Mail.app or upon the iCloud webmail interface.
Some did get saved though - rather odd.
I don't want to call my reported email problem as fixed but it seems hardly coincidental to me that once I had chosen to unflag Store deleted messages [Trash section] upon the iCloud mail server that such messages as were sent form my two iCloud addresses messages began to be saved reliably.
Surely this is indicative of some underlying misconfiguration with the iCloud server itself as Trash messages clearly aren't Sent messages and yet messages only began to be reliably saved once I had chosen to unflag Store deleted messages. As previously stated, I already had my mailbox behaviours set to Store Sent messages upon the iCloud server, but this proved to be of no avail until I chose to unflag Store deleted messages.
See attached picture for Mailbox Behaviours.

  • Sent mail from iPad not showing on imac

Hi Everyone..I am going to try to explain my situation.
I send email from my ipad , but I can't find it in my sent email on my imac.
The email definately sends and receives.
    But I can't find it!!!!!!
Is there some setting that needs to make everything show up on the imac mai.

Thanks Alfred I have also been calling appler care and need to call them back.
Here are some specifica but I hope I can explain it all.
I have an imap email with network solutions a host service.
    I have
    Imac
    Ipad
If I sent emails from my imac - the emails are in my sent file just fine
If I send emails from my ipad - they are in my sent file on my ipad, but do not show anywhere on my imac,
I know for sure they are going out as I send them from my ipad to myself to my gmail acct.  I receive it, and I see it on my ipad.  BUT it does not show in my macmail anywhere on my imac.
If I do the same test from gmail, it works fine.  Meaning if I send from my ipad to my other email then I can see the mail sent from gmail on my ipad.
BUT the imap from my other service is not showing on my mac.

  • How to get sent mail from Gmail server onto my mac

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. When configuring Mail I used POP ( I prefer it) with my Gmail account and it tediously uploaded all my received mail from the Gmail server to my mac mail program. How do I get the sent mails on the Gmail server onto my computer?

Not sure if this will work as I use IMAP. Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts> click on mailbox behaviour, uncheck 'store sent messages on server' if it is checked. Then try a fetch mail and see if it works.

  • Restoring E-mails from Backup 3

Could some one please tell me how to restore my e-mails that I saved using Apple's Backup 3 program to a mail folder I have created within the Mail program. I had a folder in the Mail program I made to save stuff in. When I restore, it restores to the Library/Mail/mailbox folder just fine. I can't get the emails into the folder I created in Mail thou????????????

You cannot restore individual mailboxes into the ~/Library/Mail/ folder without taking Envelope Index into consideration and expect that to work. The right way to restore your mail would be to either restore the entire ~/Library/Mail folder or import the mailboxes from the backup doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data format.
That said, you’ll probably be able to solve the current problem rebuilding the restored mailbox, i.e. select it in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
