Restoring the filesystems of the tape

Hi,
I am trying to build a sun machine off the image of another sun machine. I have created a backup of filesystems on the source machine of a tape that was created via ufsdump commands. Now I have to restore those filesystems to the destination system. The destination system partitions have enough space to accomodate the filesystems from the source system. The destination system already has an OS on it and can be wiped off.
Do I have to boot the destination system in a single-user mode with cdrom in order to do a ufsrestore of all the filesystems from the tape? If yes, how about non-root filesystems like /usr, /tmp, /var etc. Can they be restored in multi-user mode w/o bringing the system down. Any feedback in regard to this is appreciated.
Many Thanks,
ps

Did you figure out how to do that ? If not let me know and I will send you a procedure for that.

  • How do I restore the white sync button on iPhone 4s?

    Last night I was attempting to add a Kindle book to my iPhone via the sync method. Something has gotten corrupted, as my iPhone no longer shows the white sync button option, under the iTunes /wifi option in settings.  When I open iTunes, it sees the iphone. If I try and drag a file to the iPhone, the item bar is transparent and doesn't allow the action.  I restored the phone, but to no avail. I no longer have the ability to manually sync my phone by pressing the  white sync now button, that was previously showing on the phone. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

    You can delete an item from Safari's reading list by swiping it and then tapping "delete".

    The wish list only works on apps you have to pay for. To get it tap the icon of the app you want to save. After it opens at the upper right corner is a box with a arrow. Tap that then tap add to wish list list in the box that opens.

    Hi cfgolf,
    Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.
    iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
    2. Transfer content
    Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
    6. Set up as new
    Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
    Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
    Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
    After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
    If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
    If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.
    Cheers,
    -Joe

  • I tried to update my mother's iPad2 from ios 4.2 to the newest version. I am stuck in a loop. I get to the setup, but every time I back up the iPad, the setup tarts over. I restored the entire device - same problem

    My mom has an iPad 2 that she bought a few years ago. She has never updated it and wanted me to do so. I installed iTunes, got the newest version, and plugged her iPad in. The update went great. Everything was backed up first, all the data was synched, but now the setup page starts over again and again after I restore the data. I tried wiping everything down to the factory settings, and the same thing happens I skip the woreless access setup because she forgot her wifi password and I need to reset that. But that should not be an issue...

    If you have Wi-Fi, you don't need to connect her iPad to a computer to update iOS.
    Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on the iPad. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi
    Tap Settings > General > Software Update
    Trying to sync with iTunes on your computer won't work. It's already associated with your Apple ID.

  • I restored the factory setting on my ipad and now i cannot get further than

    i restored my ipad to factory settings using itunes on my pc. Itunes then opened at a welcome page giving me the options of either restoring as a new ipad or restoring using the last back up it saved in the process. I opted to restore the saved back up but once this is completed Itunes reopens at the same welcome page  giving the same two options. I cannot get Itunes to give me access to any options to sync with photo files on my PC which i want to restore to the ipad. every time i plug in my ipad to itunes it just displays the same welcome page.
    all the other functions and programs seem to have been restored from the back up. the photo files on my PC are deliberately not backed up into icloud but would be restored if i could make the sync with Itunes.

    Which magnifier tool are you referring to? If you double-tap with 3 fingers it should disable zoom. Then you can go into Setttings>Accessibility>Zoom and turn it off.

  • A gap between letters started to show in my indesgn files. tried to undo with tracking, the paragraph settings. nothing helped. it ruins the fluent view of the document. how can i restore the program so that doesn't happen?

    a gap between letters started to show in my indesign files. tried to undo with tracking, then with the paragraph settings. nothing helped. it ruins the fluent view of the document. how can i restore the program so that doesn't happen?
    for example: say i write a paragraph. then, in a weird some sort of way an involuntary gap suddenly appears between different letters of random words(i did not recognize any pattern to the gap appearing) throughout the entire paragraph. once i've double clicked on that paragraph, and made a minor change, lets say tapped a 'space' key, and then clicked ctrl+z to undo, it has aligned(or fixed) the entire paragraph and made it look ok again. i've tried numerous ways to undo the entire thing, but cannot find the reason. i've been working for a few years and there's no reason why this thing all of a sudden should happen right now.
    if anyone has stumbled on something like that and can advise, i would welcome it.

    if you look closely you'll see that almost every line has a single letter apart. in hebrew there is no usually a singe letter structured words.

  • The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))

    For the past couple of days I have been getting the following alert on my tape backups:
    Cannot verify tape data.
    The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))
    It has completed the backup but I get this error when performing a verify or when I try and restore.
    This error only occurs on the same server we backup in the protection group. The other 5 servers backup fine.
    We are using DPM 2010 (3.0.8195.0)

    Same here.
    When I came back from vacation I found the same error in our DPM 2012.
    The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))
    I cannot find anything in the eventlog saying that the tapelibrary has been offline.
    How can I check that?
    Last nights tape-job went "almost" well, one server (VM) still has this error. (But I dont know if that depends on the fact that it had status "Missing" in hyper-v manager due to a Win-update shutdown on a host that had a  misconfiguration (auto-reebot).)
    I rebooted the DPM-server this morning and then I tried to manually run all tapejobs again but they get this status again.
    I do not understand this error and why it suddenly appears to work again for a scheduled job but not when I trigger the job manually.
    Is there not a solution for this?
    /Anders

  • HT201210 Is anyone else having to constantly install and reinstall iTunes, and restore the iPod with each Synch?  THis is totally ludicrous.

    It seems that every time I synch my iPod, I have no music.  Then, when I go to synch again, it tells me it needs to restore the iPod!!  It's the software's fault, I think.  Windows 8 and iTunes do not seem to be very compatible and I don't have a choice in terms of what iPod and what computer I'm using.  I just want the thing to work.  Thank you.

    Some other users has reported the same there may be a but in iOS 8 or iTunes.
    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
    Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
    All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Restoring the events folder in fcpx

    How do you restore the events folder in fcpx? Now the 'project' is only the sequence and not the project any more, if your events drive gets corrupt or stops working you'll need a way to recapture the files into the events folder exactly the same way as they were before otherwise they won't reconnect to your 'project' and you'll have lost all your work.....Please don't suggest backing it up that's just not viable in a professional environment .....
    Cheers,
    Reg.

    What... 'Professionals' don't back things up? Are you insane??
    Lion sorts this out by the way...
    Appreciated!! I knew it was a stupid thing to say the moment I hit send!
    Of course things are backed up but I'm thinking about scenarios where you're on a quick turn around award show for example, you might not have had the time to back everything up yet and you have a serious deadline. Or a job such as a concert is awaiting band approval and gets put on hold for ages and you need the drive space until it comes back in a year later, or you finish a job and a months later you need to re-edit it but the media's been deleted, or you have a fire / buglary and both copies are destroyed or lost, or the clients can only supply low quality / ungraded media on tape and you need to relink to the treated / online media later in the job. These are all things that happen and will continue to happen for some time,  besides the fact that to hold every single bit of media you ever loaded on backup for a facility is going to take a **** of a lot of space and is unnecessary and unchargeable.
    I understand the archiving thing and the back up thing but what I was trying to say was that working in a professional environment you need belt and braces and the final thing to fall back on should be a small data file enabling you to recreate your event folder should you need to, as we've been able to do for good reason since electronic editing began.
    "We'll use the back up... what do you mean it's corrupt?" - I just don't want to ever be in that position.
    Back up is our responsibility but archiving has to be a client chargeable thing and many won't want to pay when on all other systems the small Project file allows them to re load from their masters. They also won't want hundreds of drives in their production offices!
    Just thinking ahead . . .
    Reg.

  • Backup set in the tape. copied into disk. how to recover using RMAN

    I have backup set in the tape. copied into disk. how to recover using RMAN
    any link and steps please

    It should be something like the following, but really you should read and understand the rman documentation first ...
    1. restore the controlfile
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    startup nomount
    exit
    rman
    connect target /
    restore controlfile from '/path to the controlfile backup piece';
    exit
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    alter database mount
    exit
    2. catalog the backup pieces
    rman
    connect target /
    catalog start with '/path to backup pieces';
    3. restore the database
    rman
    connect target /
    restore database
    4. recover the database
    rman
    connect target /
    recover database
    5. open the database
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    alter database open resetlogs;

  • Restore Root Filesystem - Remote Tape?

    Hi there,
    Does anyone know of a way to restore a root fs from
    a remote tape drive? The usual method seems to be to boot into single user mode off the cd but obviously you don't get the network this way.
    Is the only viable way to have the tape connected directly?
    Any ideas would be appreciated,
    Thanks in advance.

    The usual method seems to be to
    boot into single user mode off the cd Yep.
    but obviously you don't get the network this way. Why not?
    I'm sure the (GUI) installer on the Solaris Installation CD will
    configure the network interfaces and naming services first,
    before the installation starts.
    After that step has completed, you could start a terminal window
    and there should be a usable network configuration, for restoring
    from a remove tape drive.
    With a rarpd and bootparam server on the same ethernet
    segment, the configuration of the network interface should
    even happen automatic.
    And if all else fails, it shouldn't be too complicated to "ifconfig plumb" the network interface, manually configure the ip address,
    then use the network:
    ifconfig dnet0 plumb
    ifconfig dnet0 inet 192.168.1.2 up
    rsh -n 192.168.1.3 dd if=/dev/rmt/0 bs=32k | ufsrestore -xf -

  • Restore the dropped tablespace using RMAN?

    Hello,
    I have done a oracle tablespace re-org for PSAPPOOLD,PSAPPOOLI. Now I want to restore only the OLD PSAPPOOLD,PSAPPOOLI tablespace using TAPE backup via RMAN.
    The probelm is I have dropped the old tablespace during re-org which is a part of the re-org. Is it possible to restore the dropped tablespace using RMAN?
    My Oracle version is 9.2.05
    if anyone has done this before, please share your valuable ideas.
    I wrote the below script for the restore.
    run {
    allocate channel ch1 type sbt_tape;
    startup nomount
    restore controlfile; -
    >(I guess,if I restore old control file, I might get old structure which help the restore of TB)
    alter database mount ;
    restore tablespace PSAPPOOLD,PSAPPOOLI;
    recover tablespace PSAPPOOLD,PSAPPOOLI;;
    release channel ch1;
    Thanks,

    Hello Arjun,
    why would you want to do this?
    What is is you want to achieve by this action?
    BTW: it's not possible to do that.
    Check [Performing RMAN Tablespace Point-in-Time Recovery|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmtspit.htm].
    You want a "Tablespace point in time recovery" (TSPITR) for a dropped tablespace and that is just not possible with RMAN.
    So, the easiest way for you to get this tablespace back would be to restore and recover the database to a different host.
    Ah, while we're at it: using RMAN outside the BRTOOLS is not supported by SAP - so you better be a wiz with it because there won't be much help in case anything does not work.
    regards,
    Lars
