Restoring the iTunes library from an iPad to a "new" macbook pro

Hi! Really need help here, so this is what happened:
The hard disk of my macbook pro crashed and I sent it for repair.
After the repair, all the data e.g. itunes library, iphotos library
are gone (sigh, i didnt do a backup at all)
So now, the macbook pro is technically "new" and thankfully everything in my itunes library
is still intact in my iPad. I'm trying to sync it back to the mac. Well thats the only way for me to restore the whole library
Is this possible? Please let me know how to do it
MANY MANY THANKS!!!!

  • Transfer iTunes library from Windows 7 PC to new Macbook Pro

Had a Dell computer that had a failed video card. So I purchased a 13-inch Macbook Pro as a replacement. How do I transfer my iTunes purchases from my Windows 7 x64 PC to an OS X Lion Macbook Pro? Will need to move my entire iTunes library as well (ripped music as well as iTunes purchased music and Apps). I also have several iPods and iPads that I'll need to authorize on the Macbook that used to be authorized on the Windows 7 PC. I guess I'll have to deauthorize my old Dell computer in order for my iTunes purchases to be recognized on the Macbook (can still access the computer, just the resolution is bad)?
On my Dell, I've had to reinstall the OS a few times (upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 x32 then Windows 7 x64, and a few OS crashes, etc.) so not sure how many times I've had to authorize my purchases (think the limit is 5 times?).

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

My mac hard drive crashed, and had to be replaced. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive? About 2500 songs, some from iTunes store, most from other online sources or my own CDs.

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

If you still have access to the old computer, see the following document:

If you need to recover the library from the iPad, there's some third party applications available for recovering content off a device. The following article is pretty old (2008) so it would be best to reality-check the capabilities and availability of the various listed items prior to opting for a particular product:

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my MacBook Pro?

Just copy the entire Music folder from the old Mac to the new Mac, then click on the folder and Get Info and change the permisisons and click the spoke to "apply to enclosed items"
Ideally it's best to use the same user name on the new machine, this way all your iTunes playlists work and there is no need to change permissions.
You can create the same named user by creating another account in System Preferences >accounts
If the old computer is a PC then just copy the old Music folder to the Mac onto the desktop, then use iTunes to import the music files.
If the old comptuer is dead, then you can extract the hard drive(if it's still working) and use a IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable to access the internal drive.
Mac's should be able to read NTFS format of PC's, just not write to it. But if it's not working there is software to install to allow the Mac to read that NTFS drive format, just search online.

  • I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.

I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro.  We have the two computers set up through Time Machine.  I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited.  When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this).  When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library.  Don't know if that is a problem or not.  Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?!  Both computers are running Lion.  This permission thing is making me crazy.  What am I missing?  We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!

Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

  • HT4527 How can I transfer my iTunes library from my iPad to my new computer?

My hard drive crashed without recent backup and I would like to transfer my iTunes library from my iPad to the new hard drive. Some tunes transferred and some didn't. Thanks.

Non-iTunes purchases cannot be transferred from an iDevice to computer via iTunes.
The simplest solution is to simply move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Why anyone would choose to make life more difficult by screwing around with transferring purchases from an iDevice and using 3rd party software to extract non-iTunes purchases is beyond me.
IF for some reason there is no backup of the old computer and/or the old computer is no longer accessible, then try google for solutions.
Do yourself a favor going forward, backup your media and other important data.

  • Duplicating iTunes library from old Windows PC to new MacBook

Okay, I need the assistance of you geniuses.
I have a library on iTunes on a Windows PC laptop. I transfer a lot of that music to my iPhone in playlist format.
I want to keep the iTunes library on the Windows PC laptop, but I also want that library on the iTunes on my new MacBook (which I just got today for Christmas :))
Can I sync my music filled iPhone to the iTunes on the MacBook as a way of filling up the MacBook iTunes library?
Follow up question: Does syncing my iPhone to the new MacBook's iTunes de-authorize me from syncing to the PC iTunes?
Can I, over the course of a few syncs (due to capacity limitations), duplicate the entire iTunes library on the PC with the iTunes library on the MacBook?
    Thanks!

  • How do i Get music from my iPad to a new MacBook Pro

I have a lot of music on my iPad and want to get it onto my new MacBook Pro. It seems to want to sync the MacBook to the iPad which will wipe out all my music since the MacBook has nothing on it. How do I sync from iPad to MacBook?

You need to make the new Mac iTunes library your syncing library. iTunes on the Mac sees your iPad as a new device because you have never synced with this computer before. You can make the Mac your syncing computer by following the instructions in this user tip. You will be able to transfer the purchased music on the iPad into iTunes when you follow this procedure.

  • How to transfer an iTunes library from an iPhone to a new Macbook Air

I just received a new macbook air and I would like to transfer the music from my iPhone to my new laptop. My old laptop that contained my itunes library is dead so I don't know how to get the music from my iPhone onto my new computer.

Is the music you want on your new Mac all purchased music via iTunes?
If so, then you can log into the iTunes Store on your Mac, and then on the right side, click on Purchased under Quick Links. Then click on All Songs, and Not on This Computer. You will see all of your purchased iTunes music listed with a little cloud next to each song. You can download songs individually, or go to the bottom and click on Download All.

I presume you are not talking about the iPhoto & iTunes libraries.
MA does not copy the System & User Libraries across but it does copy some of the contents across such as application preferences, Mail records, etc. There are new files in the new Libraries relevant to the new hardware so to overwrite new with old could lead to all sorts of problems. If the OS on the G4 was not 10.5.2, eg was 10.4.x the Library structure might also be significantly different. Nevertheless you might find it necessary to copy certain files from old library to new. You need to be logged in as administrator on both computers to do this and might need to validate further the copying using the admin password. This should be possible with drag and drop.
