Restoring to original settings
Please see my other discussion regarding recovery mode
However, if I restore to original settings it then gives me the warning about going back to factory settings - Does this mean I will ose everything I have previously backed up?
Thanks in advance
As was mentioned. If you have made a back up of your phone there is no need to worry about losing your data. Make sure you transfer all your purchased apps or any purchased contents that you downloaded from your iphone. If you don't transfer them, you won't get them back when you restore from back up.

Can you help me to retrieve my applications. In iTunes I accidentally clicked the Restore button in the Summary screen. It restored the original settings and I lost all my applications and don't know if it is possible to retrieve them.
All apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch should be in your iTunes library on your computer.
You can re-download all 3rd party apps and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the apps that was used to purchase the app originally.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Do this with iTunes on your computer. After you have re-downloaded every app one by one, select Sync Apps under the Apps tab for the device's sync preferences along with selecting the apps below that you want transferred to the device followed by a sync to re-install the apps on the device. -
Camera roll empty but shows 6.1 gb. Restored to original settings after backing up. When I restored the backup camera roll still shows 6.1 gb and is still empty. I imagine that the backup contains some corruption
Hi cfgolf,
Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
2. Transfer content
Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
6. Set up as new
Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.
Cheers,

Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?
The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

My toolbars are mostly empty. What happened? How do I restore the original settings?
* If, on Windows, in Firefox 3.6 the menu bar is hidden then press and hold the Alt key down or press F10, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear
* Go to "View > Toolbars" and check-mark "Menu Bar" with a click on it to make that permanent. See [[Menu bar is missing]]).
* Make sure that you have the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
* If items are missing then see if you can find them in the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window
* If you see the item in the Customize window then drag it back from the Customize window to one of the toolbars.
* If, in "View > Toolbars > Customize", you do not see that item then click the "Restore Default Set" button

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode. I am thoroughly confused now after researching online. I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help! Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??
Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup. -
While updating software on my iPod touch my computer switched itself off and now iTunes is asking me to restore to original settings. I have photos on my iPod that were not backed up so will I lose them if I resore to original settings? If so is there any way I can get them back?
After you restore to factory settings/new iPod you can restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
That is your only choice -

DetailsBest way would be to just grab the pen tool and recreate the illustration using your photo as a guide, or if you trust your precision just use the brush tool and draw on top using sampled colos. Restoration using pixel-based methods will be time consuming, there's too much texture and too many cracks.

Restore to original settings before it can be used in itunes
Half way through an update it says itunes has detected an iphone on recovery mode. you must restore iphone to original settings for it to be used in itunes. will i lose everything?
If you have sync'd the iphone with itunes in the past then it will restore your phone to a default iOS6 and then chuck all your apps and pictures back on your phone that were on your phone when you last synced it. It'll bring the messages back too.
If you've been using iCloud, use iTune to blast iOS 6 on your phone and do an iCloud restore when you get the phone up and running. The level of recovery is a bit more dependant on what options you turned on/off when you did the phone backups.
If you've done neither iTunes or iCloud backups then, I'm sorry to say, you're S.O.L. -
I have an old iPhone3 that has been sitting in the drawer since I updated to the iPhone 4.
A coworker offered to buy it form me and I need to delete and restore to factory settings.
I forgot the passcode to do so....
I also dont have access to my itunes from my home computer since I am at the office now.....
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
EricaThanks. I brought it to work without realizing I had a passcode on it. I can get through to settings but then I need the passcode to erase and restore to factory settings. I will have to bring it home and connect to itunes to erase.
Thanks...... -
Find photos from iphone after restore to original settings
So I was having issues after upgrading to OS4 and decided to follow advice to restore to factory settings. This did solve my issues with being able to edit contacts, but it presented a new issue.
I did do a backup of the phone before the restore, but I did not think to import my camera roll photos into iPhoto.
I just checked in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup to see if I could somehow grab the camera roll photos out of the backup, but was surprised that the only back up that looks to be in there is from after the restore. Is it possible to find an earlier backup to get the photos from? And if so, do I have to restore the phone to that backup or is there some other way to maybe just import the photos to iPhoto or open them with another application? It looks like all the files in the backup are text files.
I looked at a Time Machine backup but that was from an iphone backup about a week ago so there were newer pictures.
Any help would be appreciated.I think to harvest the camera roll photos from the backup requires you to restore the iphone off the OLD backup, import the camera roll, then restore the iphone off the newer backup to get it back the way you want it.
There are various third-party iPhone Backup Extractors that should be able to pull the photos from the backup file, just FYI. Both Mac and Windows. Of course, since iTunes overwrote the backup file the OP wanted, doesn't really help in this case.
You can manually move the backup files before doing any kind of major syncing, etc, for future needs. -
In an effort to solve the problem below, I fiddled with a lot of settings. How can I revert to the settings as they originally featured ? (the default settings)
See:
You can use "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window. -
I already checked and I do not have a restore point set up on my p/c, so that is not an option. If needed, I would go back to my original version of firefox so I could have everything the way it was back. I do not have anything that I had saved on my new toolbar. All I have is a dropdown arrow under the tiny firefox symbol on the top left side of my screen. I don't even have a bar where I can put a www address in. When someone answers me, please keep in mind that I am only able to take directions and navigate very slowly around here. A p/c wizard, i am not. Thanks in advance for your help.

When i dropped it, the screen went crazy and now I see a whole bunch of random colorful lines on the screen and I am unable to press anything. I want to restore the phone to factory settings, but when I connect to iTunes on my Mac, it is saying that I must enter the passcode, which I cannot do, because of the screen. It also says that I can't restore my iPhone because Find My iPhone is on. In order to turn it off I have to unlock my phone and turn it off through the phone but i can't!! Someone please help me
If you turned on Find My Phone in Settings > iCloud, login to your iCloud account, go to Find My Phone, select the iPhone and do a remote erase.
If you did not turn on Find My Phone there is nothing more you can do...take it to an Apple store genius bar for an out of warranty replacement, in the US that is $269. -
If you restore from back up does it wipe the phone or restore to the last time you backed up ?
You'll need to get a SIM card from the appropriate carrier. It doesn't have to be an active SIM, though.
