Restoring to SSD from USB drive with no HD

My Acronis cloning software refuses to work, and they refuse to help, so I'm trying to make my solid state drive the bootable device by making a system restore image on a USB external drive, and booting to a system repair DVD. I can't make the DVD disk boot! And I can't make recovery manager start with F11 despite it saying it will on the lower right screen.
I get an error "This version of system Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair" I just made it from the computer I'm trying to repair! And if the hard drive is unplugged, how dies it know what version I'm trying to repair?

Hello @davidstreb,
I understand that you are not able to enable a system recovery from the RECOVERY Partition on your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you!
To recover your system, I recommend acquiring new recovery media by following the steps in this document on Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive. Once obtained, you can recover your operating system by following this resource on Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8).

    3) Run UDI Task Sequence from Boot Media to Restore data from USB External drive which had the captured data.
    Issue:
My task sequence failed to restore data from USB external drive.
    Is there a fix
Any help is greatly appreciated it.

I created a query to see the deployment logs in real time. I see the TS fails when running "Request State Store" task. Here are the logs.

  • Can't restore my data from hard drive with time machine

So basically I recently backed up my things on an external 1TB Seagate hard drive via Time Machine on my Mac. I then restored my Mac to its factory settings. However when I plugged in my hard drive it didn't show up in my finder. I opened Disk Utility and it shows up there but when I tried to restore my data it wasn't able to find it. This is so weird and I'm so scared can someone please help me

    vanessayu wrote:
And another thing, my mac is randomly turning off and then displaying a gray screen saying your mac shut down because of a problem. does this have someting to do with the disk
Sounds like the TimeMachine drive is defective.
Uplug it and reboot and see if your problems go away.
If your TimeMachine is broken it might be possible to do data recovery on it, you can take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they will image it so the files are accessible, then you can pick through the mess as long as it wasn't encrypted or Filevaulted.
TimeMachine uses a lot of placeholder files, basically the same name but minus the content of the files for each saved state.
It's a lot of work going through all the folders to find your original files but as long as the drive works the files should be able to be recovered.
Sorry about your problems, TimeMachine hasn't quite lived up to it's expectations and I try to warn everyone NOT to completely trust it.

    HI Brigdool,
It depends how you made the backup.
If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

  • Cannot mount external USB drive with FDisk_partition_scheme

Due to some recent mac issues in my lab, we updated one of the computers to Maverick 10.9.4 from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 yesterday. Anyhow, this seems to have erased the ability of the mac to read or mount several identical USB drives with the NTFS format (WD My Passport Ultra 500GB USB3.0). It could do it yesterday when it was OSX 10.6.8, but not today (OSX 10.9.4). The drives still work fine on other OSX 10.6.8, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 computers (this is appears to be a problem with the Maverick 10.9.4 operating system itself, rather than the flash drives which work flawlessly with every other computer I've tried). I want to remove data from the computer to create backups on the USB drives (no, I don't want to create an online backup or buy a new set of USB drives).
diskutil can see the drives, but cannot verify or repair them as they lack a GUID (GPT) partition scheme. I'm assuming this is the root of the problem. Manually mounting the drives does not work. Installing the ntfs-3g driver also did not work (I was using this to write to the NTFS drives until we upgraded OS's). Installing the WD Passport drivers for OSX also did not work. How do I get the mac to mount these drives?
I could reformat one USB drive and then copy to the others, but this would be extremely inconvenient and take days of copying files back and forth (and would prefer to fix the mac rather than go through this with every NTFS drive I own). If I did this, the FAT32 hard drive format would not be suitable, as format is unable to handle the extremely large sequencing datasets I need to transfer. I'm not super familiar with hard drive formats, but in the event we cannot get Maverick to actually work could someone possibly suggest a format able to handle large file sizes (the largest file I need to move is ~60GB) and be compatible with Windows 8.1 / OSX 10.9.4 / Ubuntu 14.04 as well?
Another workaround I thought of would be just to install an Ubuntu partition on the mac and get the files off through the Linux install. Which is also inconvenient, but would probably be faster than trying to reformat the drives and copy everything over onto them again given the amount of data I want to transfer.
Unrelated, but is there any way to view files and folders in the OSX root directory besides through Terminal? It seems like this functionality was also removed when we "upgraded" from Snow Leopard. (At this point, if it were up to me I would wipe all of the macs we own and replace them with Ubuntu... even the most minor of tasks always require some sort of workaround with them... at my wits end here ).

Yeah this definitely appears to be a problem specifically with this mac. It's been having all sorts of weird problems lately, and we figured that upgrading to Maverick might fix them (but instead we got new problems).
To give an update on this, I ended up reformatting one of the drives to HFS+ and disabled journaling. It now recognizes the drive again, and I'm pulling the files off that way. I looked at exFAT, but it looks like HFS+ has much better Linux support (Windows is read-only but that's only a minor annoyance, as the algorithms to process the data only run on UNIX machines anyways). It's a shame I couldn't keep using NTFS (had to copy over literally EVERYTHING again...) but whatever. Again, no solution for the issue (where this mac can't read NTFS drives).
@rkaufmann87 - To give a bit more explanation, we recently had to disable online backups because apparently the sheer amount of data causes Time Machine to freeze the computer and fail every time it has a scheduled backup (original issue we thought that upgrading to Maverick would solve... didn't work). The hard drive has been having a lot of issues when it begins to reach max capacity as well. So I am pulling off all of my files to external hard drives and deleting the local copy before we attempt to back up online again. And the data would probably take me a year and a lot of money to recreate (for the curious, it's high throughput sequencing data). I'm choosing not to take any chances as a result.

  • Importing Photos from USB drive, autostarting Iphoto

In order to get my iMac to automatically start iPhoto and initiate the import process from a USB drive, does the USB drive have to have the same exact file structure of that used on my camera's SD card? When I connect a USB drive with jpegs on it, iPhoto will not automatically start.

Why do you need it to start iPhoto automatically?
If you really do, then format it the same as a Camera Card - FAT 16.

  • Downgrading from Mavericks to Snow Leopard, can't boot from USB drive

I'm attempting to do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a 2010 Macbook. The MB had recently been upgraded to Mavericks, but because it was running slowly, I decided to downgrade. (If you respond to this post, please don't ask me why I'd make this decision.)
As with any other clean install I've done--all pre-Mountain Lion--I backed everything up, I created a .dmg file of the Snow Leopard, and made a perfectly good, bootable USB drive with the OS (1 partition, GUID table); I tested this USB drive on another Macbook, one currently running Snow Leopard, by holding option as I booted up. It works fine and gets to the installation screen.
I booted the Mavericks Macbook while holding command+r, and I erased the main HD. I then formatted it with 1 partition, with a GUID table. All was normal.
But here's where the problem starts. I plugged the USB drive into the formerly Mavericks computer, and held option for the bootloader. It recognizes the OS. But when I click the arrow to proceed, it inevitably has a kernel panic and tells me to restart the computer.
I re-made my bootable drive, and I tested it again on the other machine. Again, it's still fine. Plugged it into my main machine--again, a panic.
Using command+r to reach disk utility, I've now erased and repartitioned the computer's hard drive several times, even using the advanced-security erase feature. Still, the panic.
When I hold command+r at boot, it always forces me through the Internet Recovery. The only option offered to reinstall OS X is with Lion, which I didn't buy with my Apple ID.
    What can I do?

Sorry, but this didn't help me. From what I gather, Mavericks (or maybe Mountain Lion) included a firmware update that, for some reason, prevents users from downgrading to anything before Lion. This makes things difficult, because I didn't buy Lion--I made the leap from SL to Mavericks.
Here's the strange part, I learned: When I enter Internet Recovery, I'm prompted to reinstall Lion, not Mavericks. And because I didn't buy Lion, my Apple ID/password, which are asked for, don't help.
Anyone else with suggestions? None of my USB-based installations are working, and I'm feeling out of luck. I don't want to spend money at the Apple store...

    Hello,
I can not say if it is supported on this notebook or not, but on some Satellite M series USB memory is a supported boot option. If you hit F2 on start up and go into BIOS then check boot, if it is supported it should be listed there. Otherwise it is not supported on this model. Hope that helps.

USB drive with install image is showing in Startup Manager on a Mac Pro, but wont boot. Showing circle with cross strip, and shut down automatically. USB device are made and work on two different MacBook Pro, but used on Mac Pro. Any help?

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

    Can I install 10.6 OS X from USB drive? Imac 2008 24"

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can, but it's a bit difficult because you have to copy the Snow Leopard disc content to a USB drive. There are a lot of pages which have got the steps to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the USB drive, like this page > http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

  • Restore SSD from USB Flash Drive Clone

    Hi,
My sister bought me a 512gb Samsung 830 SSD which I wanted to format using a 32gb USB flash drive which I'm using as a boot disk (Clone of my orginal hard disk using Carbon Copy). However, When I open up the Disk Utility and go to restore the SSD using the USB Flash drive I get an error "The startup disk can't be used as a restore source: To use this disk as a source, restart your computer using the recover system, and open the Disk Utility again." I've restarted several times but always get the same response. What am I doing wrong?

I figured it out, I actually needed 3 things:
    1) Carbon Copy Cloner
    2) 32GB San Disk Cruzer USB drive
    3) Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 1: Cloned my old hard drive and created image unto my desktop
Step 2: Format USB drive and restore USB flash drive using Carbon Copy cloner
Step 3: Shut down compter, remove usb drive and install ssd drive into computer               (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Unibody-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3 401/1)
Step 4: Install old hard drive into Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 5: Connect Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station with your old hd installed in it to USB port
Step 6: Start PC....allow the computer to book from the Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 7: Connect USB Flash drive to Macbook
Step 8: Open Carbon Copy Clone and restore the USB flash drive onto the ssd drive
Step 9: Once complete....shutdown macbook pro and disconnect both the USB flash drive and the Plugable USB             3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 10: Turn on macbook pro, it should boot from ssd now (It's so freaking FAST!)
