Restoring via the Internet on my MacBook Air ....

When I try to reinstall OS X there is no way to select the hard drive... Any thoughts?

Seems like a defective drive, if you ask me. Is it within warranty? If not, perhaps replace it with one of the replacement SSDs that OWC offers:

  • HT1338 Suddenly I can't download pdf files or many images from the internet on my macbook air.  It is up to date and this is a recent issue.

My macbook air was purchased last September and has been pretty reliable.  But recently I stopped being able to down pdf files from the internet - nothing opens.  Also, many images do not download and I have trouble getting onto a wireless system I've been using at work.  Can anyone tell me what this is?

In addition to Flash, you might need some other plugins.  Microsoft videos are mostly in Silverlight, and you'll want Flip4Mac to play WMVs.  Perian contains codecs for pretty much every video online.

    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window

Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

  • Cannot Find MacBook IP via the Internet

Have a Mac Mini. Recently bought my mom a MacBook. She's not tech savvy, so I configured her machine so that I can login remotely using the built-in OS X sharing capabilities. Configured both computers on my home wireless network, and got everything to work perfectly -- even the Chicken of the VNC app, which allows me to remotely control her desktop if there's a problem. Very easy to find and connect to her machine.
Here's the issue: Once I setup her machine in upstate New York with Verizon's new FIOS broadband service, I can no longer find her computer and make a connection -- no matter what IP address I attempt to use. Her local IP address is a generic 192.168.1.2 -- firewall is turned off.
Any general advice regarding how I can find/connect to my mother's computer via the internet? Using Finder > Connect, it merely requests an IP address, but I get the feeling I need to link to her router, then her local computer -- two IP addresses.
Sorry for lengthy question, but figure this is fairly routine. Maybe not. Thanks!
Mini and MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not clear on what you're using. Do you have Apple Remote Desktop (which is the subject of this forum)? Or are you just using VNC?
If you do indeed have ARD, in her router, you need to open TCP and UDP port 3283 and TCP and UDP port 5900 and then forward those same ports to the internal IP address used by her Mac. For encrypted file transfer (ARD 3, if that's what you have), you also need to open and forward TCP port 22. You may also need to open and forward TCP (and perhaps UDP) 5988 and 5989, though it's not clear under what circumstances this will be necessary; some people have reported those as being required, though Apple doesn't list them as being used by ARD.
Then in ARD on your end, you need to use the IP address that the router picks up from her Internet provider.
The procedure for VNC is the same, but you just open port 5900.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.

  • "Jumping" Internet on my Macbook Air

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble with the wifi on my Macbook Air. The internet keeps diconnecting and reconnecting, although the Airport signal continues full. I know it's disconnected because pages stop loading, emails don't work and any active download also stops.
My wife's macbook pro, the ipad and iphones work perfectly using the same router.
It's a fairly new MBA, bought in Jan2013, has all the software updated and I use Google Chrome as browser. I thought it could have a relation with the Avast anti-virus software and uninstalled, but the problem persists.
Its becomig impossible to use the internet on it, as it disconnects  and reconnects after 1 or 2 minutes, disconnecting again after about a minute or so.
    Any clue?
    Thanks

Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. If you have the same problem in Recovery mode, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    Have you contacted AppleCare?
The subject of your topic has been discussed quite a bit in these forums. The user-user solutions have been edited out of some of the discussions, ostensibly because sharing copyrighted materials, such as a useable MBA special Build of OS X 10.7 Build 11A2063, is prohibited. Many have found that this particular build is not available for download from Apple, via the Internet Recovery or the Apple Store. I would think that it is due to change at any time, and perhaps has been done already. AppleCare should be able to provide that information sooner than anyone here.

  • I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

After you go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources as suggested by sberman, click on the + button and scroll down to Portuguese and select that.  Over at the right you will see the choices Brazilian, Brazilian abnt, Portuguese.  You might want to add all three to see which you like best.
The "Brazilian" layout is pretty useless.  It is identical to the US layout and the only way to make accents is via the option key shortcuts:  option + n, then o gives you õ.
The Brazilian abnt and Portuguese layouts have dead keys for adding accents over at the right edge of the keyboard.  But these may not match what is printed on your keys.
You may prefer to stay with the US layout.  On that you can get accented letters by just holding down the base letter and selecting what you want from the popup menu that appears.  Or you can use the option key shortcuts.
Another option is the layout called US International PC, which has accent deadkeys on ~, ', etc.
Which ever layout you want to use, you must select it in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
To see which key does what for any layout, use the Keyboard Viewer:

How do I mute the Microphone on a MacBook Air?
I am using a converting program and a USB turntable to convert my vinyl record to CD for my personal use.  During the recording session, environmental noise/room noise gets recorded at the same time via the built in microphone.  Is there anyway to mute this microphone or disable it?  I could do that on my old Toshiba with its Window program.
    Nantais

Turn the input volumn down all the way for the Mic. You do that in the Sound Applet In System Preferences.

  • TS2570 trying to reinstall the OS on a MacBook Air.

I'm trying to reinstall the OS on a MacBook Air. I got it from my former company, and they didn't keep the OS install disc, in fact they wiped it and put Windows 7 on it. I have quite a few macs, and have always used an external USB disc and can install but this machine is so fickle and throws up the multilingual failure message upon boot. I was, however, able to boot into a recovery volume that was on my external hard drive, and I burned Snow Leopard to the machine's OWN hard drive, and when it booted up, it failed again.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have a Mid 2012 MacBook Air. This MacBook Air isn't compatible with Snow Leopard, and that's the reason why you are getting a kernel panic when you try to start up Snow Leopard.
In order to reinstall OS X, you can use that recovery volume or Internet Recovery (hold Command, Option and R keys while your computer is starting). Then, open Disk Utility, choose your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X

  • HT201210 My imac says my idevices are not eligible for restore.  Works fine on my macbook air

I plug my ipad, iphone or ipod touch into my imac and try to restore or upgrade.  This has been tried with ios7, 6.14 and 6.13.  My imac always says that my device is not eligble for the software.  I move the device and the cable to my macbook air and can restore, upgrade or do anything else I want with the ios software.  Move it back to the imac and I get the same error message.  I have NEVER been able to restore or upgrade my devices on my imac since I got it in Janaury but can do it all day long on my macbook air.  Both are running mountain lion and the latest version of itunes.

I need to be really sarcastic here.  Duh..really?  Wow, that is such an amazing response.
Of course I have tried that.  I have had this problem since January.  If you read my post, I have the latest OSX and the latest itunes which it says in that link.
If anyone wants to help with some real information, I will listen.  posting a vague and unhelpful apple link does nothing.
