Restoring with Time Capsule.

I have been having some issues with my computer wanting to shut down with the grey screen lately. And I want to format and reinstall my OS and start fresh.. My questions are as follows: When I do this can I restore partial files back on to my machine like certain apps. And when or if I drag the apps from the application folders I will assume all the necessary files will copy over? Or should I try to install from the original disks?

You have several choices:
A full system restore. That's everything, including OSX (unless you excluded important things). See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
After installing OSX, use +Setup Assistant+ to restore everything else, or parts of everything else. You can select or omit some broad categories of things, but you can't pick and choose within them. See the green box in #19 of the FAQ. Then download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.6.4 (unless that's the version on your Install disc). Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
Restore only selected items. To do that, you should first restore at least the user accounts from your backups via Setup Assistant, so the users on the Mac are the same ones as on the backups. Otherwise, they won't have permission to restore what looks like a different user's data.
Some apps can be restored that way, some can't. Complex apps, that came with special installers, put various files in assorted places. Unless you know what and where they all are, and restore them, the app won't work properly, if at all. In those cases, you'll need to reinstall them from the original discs.
And no, restoring apps doesn't restore data. Data is kept separately.
Try to avoid dragging anything from your backups. First, the permissions may not transfer properly; second, if you accidentally change, move, or delete anything there, you can hopelessly corrupt your backups. Use only the apps and procedures provided by Apple.

  • When doing a restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing

    Hi,
When doing a full restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing. This happens with all recent backups. Also after doing a verify/repair of the TimeCapsule disk.
This is a dissaster for my originals (my Ableton Live projects). I am very dissapointed in TC and TM at this moment, because I trusted my backup system in combination with my MBP fully.
    Please help?
    Best regards, Tom

    Hi Pondini,
Sorry for the late response, but the problem was something else and were two separate ones.
Somewhere along the way the TC backup couldn't find backup to the original TC volume, that's why I let TM backup towards my user volume named 'Tom'.
When I wanted to restore the root of my drive when selecting the diskname and 'Restore' in any point in time, this resulted in error -8003 in the activated TimeMachine.
Then I tried to do it via the recovery OS and even via the original OSX DVD. Both not enabling me to select the TC volume named 'Tom'. Then I remembered that I first backed-up onto the original 'TimeCapsule' volume/partition. When I copied the sparsefile to the 'TimeCapsule' partition, I was able to recover the entire disk using the recovery OS.
All my files are backup and I am a happy Mac user once again :-)
    Thanks & Regards, Tom

  • Macbook reboots in preparation stage when restoring with time capsule

I just replaced a hard drive from a disk crash. When I tried to restore from Time Capsule, I get to the stage where it's preparing - reading the size of the restoral categories - and the Macbook reboots before getting out of that stage. When I connect with Ethernet, it stays in that stage about 10 sec before rebooting. When I connect via wireless, it takes maybe 30 sec before reboot. When I connect to Time Capsule via a PC with Airport, it appears in good order (but suggests a new firmware update that seems just one release later). My Mac is about 14 months old. Could I have an OS incompatibility or a firmware issue (I haven't updated Time Capsule yet in fear of causing new issues)? Would bypassing this stage and going to Migration Utility be an optioin (I haven't tried this because it requires a lot of input on profiles such as DNS entries)?

I'm running my TC in 5ghz mode with my MBA. My original problem was the lack of signal strength coming from my AEBS caused the MBA to have a slow connection. There are a number of pipes in the wall that separates the two rooms where my MBA lives and the AEBS is.
So, I hard wired the TC to the AEBS and placed the TC in the room where my MBA lives most of the time. Now that the signal strength is really good I'm not having any issues.

  • New hard drive, restored with time capsule -- safari won't open

Just successfuly replaced my crashed 500gb hard drive with a 2TB drive. Used time capsule to restore the system (what a godsend), but now programs on the computer arent working. I tunes opens, then crashes, the app store just bounces down in the application bar for a while then stops, safari opens 80% of a page and then the window crashes and goes away. I get a feeling it has something to do with my recent repairs, but what? Any help would be appreciated. this is very frustrating.
Original system is a white intel iMac 500GB 20 inch screen EMC# 2018.

ok, sorry for being new at this, but I just tried "repair disk" and have an almost infinite array of permissions errors....so many that it crashes when doing the repair. Is this a problem with the drive itself, or the fact that i restored an entire system onto a new drive? Either way, is it fixable?

  • Help/strategy for restoring with time capsule

After some of the last Apple software updates, my computer has serious problems. Specifically, iTunes has a conflict with something else in the system. I've tried pretty much everything to fix this, The only thing that worked once (as directed by apple phone support) was to completely delete my system preference folder, but the next time I restarted the problem was back.
The only thing I can think to do now is to restore my system to how it was about 10 days ago, before the latest round of updates. However, I don't want to lose all the documents and emails that I've been working on since then. My thought is back up the "work" stuff like desktop, documents folder, etc onto another drive. Then use time machine to restore the comptuer to the past state, then copy the "work" folders back in to update them.
Is there an easier way to do this? If I restore to 10 days ago, I'm assuming Time machine loses the docs, email, etc from 5 days ago?
What are the advantages to wiping the drive first vs. a "soft" restore?
Any other advice? Thanks for your help.

I did a reinstall (back to 10.5.2), followed by a time-machine restore. Itunes is now back to 7.6.2, and Quicktime is at 7.4something. ITunes seems to work again.
While this solved my problem, it is an hugely time-consuming process. While it is more convenient to "set it and forget it", I think it would have actually been considerably faster to reinstall my apps from DVD and manually re-import docs and files from my home folder. Additionally, Time Machine will not fully restore my Leopard Mail messages. They appear in Time Machine, but neither the initial full restore or specific restores of just my inbox resulted in about 4000 messages not appearing. Fortunately I had manually archived my mailboxes before this process.
**I would not recommend relying on time machine as the only means of backing up important files**
**Also, do not expect to have your computer back to normal right away** Although I began the whole process of reinstallation and restoring Saturday morning, my computer is still about 24h away from being done with the initial Time Machine backup (ie. it won't be done until Tuesday). For desktops this would not be a problem, but for a laptop, I had to leave my computer at home today.

  • Problems with Full restore using Time Capsule backup???

For some reason my MacBook Pro recently crapped out completely, and I am trying to do a complete restore of the OS via a full backup I made with using Time Machine onto my Time Capsule disk, but I am running into some problems doing so and I was hoping someone might have some insight as to how I should deal with things at this point...
    Here's where things get messy...
    - I insert my Mac OS X 10.5 Installation DVD into my Macbook and boot from the drive, and I immediately choose the menu option to 'Restore from Time Capsule Backup'...
    - After logging into my Time Capsule and then choosing the proper .sparseimage file to restore from, I click 'continue' and it brings me to the screen where I choose where I want to restore to (which in my case, is the one and only internal HD inside my Macbook Pro)
    - The bottom of this window tells me that it's "Calculating space required to restore data..." but it simply hangs at the point with a spinning wheel indicating its still doing the calculating, but never actually presents me with the space required, not does it allow me to click continue to perform the restore?? I've allowed it over an hour to calculate the space required and it still just spins its status wheel...
This is where I am stuck at this point, and I have no idea how to get it to proceed to the next step to allow me to perform the restore??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I will have no choice but to do a complete reinstall (including all apps and data) if I can't get the backup restored... Thanks!

I had the same problem when installing a new HDD in my Macbook. The solution I found was to reinstall Leopard onto the new HDD from the install CD, then reboot off the install CD once I had done this. I was then able to choose the 'Restore from Time Capsule' option and get my HDD to show up in the window.
A word of warning, once you have reinstalled Leopard and it starts asking you for all you info, as if for the first time to set up your computer, there is an option at the end of that process to restore your data from a Time Capsule backup. While this did restore all my files and so forth, it did not update any of the 'Apple' apps, i.e. iTunes, iPhoto, Quicktime, or the operating system itself, suggesting a 500Mb download via 'Software Update' to update the system. It was faster for me to reboot of the install CD and restore via the process outlines above. That way you get all your system updates included.
Not sure if this is the 'approved' method but it worked for me! The restore process took about 75 minutes for about 100Gb of data from my external backup drive connected to my Macbook via a Firewire cable.
    Hope this helps!

  • Reverting back to 10.6.2 with Time Capsule Restore

I am running a Mac Book Pro, and recently upgraded to 10.6.3. Strange things have started happening to my MBP since upgrading and I wanted to revert to OSX 10.6.2 (for trouble-shooting purposes). Is it possible to 'down-grade' to a previous release by restoring from a Time Capsule backup that was taken when the o/s was at that revision? If so, has anyone got any simple instructions (steps) I can follow to do this?
    Many thanks in advance.

Great joy - my MBP is back after downgrading to 10.6.2 (via 10.6.0) from 10.6.3.
I have an MBP - late 2009 - 15.4", 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, , 4gb memory, 500gb HDD. Recently updated (via Software Update) to 10.6.3 from 10.6.2 and that's when my problems started. It would not restart, I had to press power button 10+ times to get it to boot, it would drain the battery after I shut it down and a few other 'strange' things.
I reset SMC but to no avail.
I then decided to revert back to 10.6.2 and see whether the problems were really linked (IMO) to 10.6.3 update.
    Steps I went through to down-grade :
    1. backed up my MBP to my time capsule.
    2. Then inserted Snow Leopard upgrade CD.
    3. Selected install Snow Leopard/Repair. The MBP then rebooted from CD. I followed on screen questions, and it went into Installation (got slightly worried that it was doing a full install I hadn't selected the Repair option from the drop down menu, but maybe because I'd already selected this option before the MBP rebooted it didn't seem to matter).
    4. Re-installed 10.6.0 which took about 50 minutes.
    5. Ran 'repair disk permissions' in disk utility which took about 7 mins.
    6. Applied 10.6.2 Combo update having previously downloaded it
..... and normal service appears to have been resumed on my MBP. And all my personal data was still on the hard drive.
I then ran Software Update just to see what other patches, etc were available, but did not install any of them as I wanted to see what effect applying raw 10.6.2 had on my desire to restore normal service. I have a fairly simple installation - Photoshop, Light Room, Aperture, mail, Office for Mac - all seem to work. The only thing that went missing was Firefox, but for me that's no great issue. I will selectively apply updates and monitor impact (but will not be installing the 10.6.3 update from Software Update as this seem to have been the cause of my issues).
My MBP now restarts correctly, does not appear to drain the battery after shutting down, boots on the first press of the power button (had to press it 10+ times to get it to boot). So am very happy that my machine seems to be ok.
Therefore I have not needed to restore from Time Capsule backup after all.
Thanks for all the messages of help.

  • Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash

The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?

think about the speed of wifi here
speed at 802.11n = a theoretical 540Mbps (less in real world scenarios)
Mbps = Mega bits per second
MBps - Mega bytes per second
    8 bits = 1 byte
    8 mega bits = 1 mega byte
How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here.

  • Trying to restore from time capsule to nes hard drive, keeps looking for disks ! Can you help

ccan't restore from time capsule to new hard drive, after changing to new HD, after calculating required space to restore it keeps looking for disks! Have have put original OS X  install disk 1 in it won't Eject , any help

The very best way to do this is with ethernet to the existing router. Put the TC in bridge mode manually.
Then plug it in to existing router.. we recommend LAN router to WAN on the TC but even that is not 100% necessary.
If you want to link by wireless, to a non-apple router that is bad.. recommend strongly against it. Join a wireless network is super slow.
If you have a desktop Mac you can plug it directly into the Mac by ethernet.
But we need to know how the Mac is connected to internet.
I have given some info on one layout here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
If you end up relying on an old TC. And any of the models from Gen1-3.. and increasingly Gen4 have all reached EOL.. they can die suddenly and either take your files with them or be hard to recover. Also a TC is slow cf a USB external drive even, which is more reliable. Considering a 2TB is <$100 I would be careful using an old TC simply because you got it free.

  • Restore from Time Capsule problem

I had to restore my system from my Time Capsule but it is not working.
    Help needed.
    Macbook Pro 15/2.2GHz/2x1G/160GB/SD/MDM
Installed OS X 10.6.7 update 5/7/11 but after that many apps started to crash on launch.
Attempoed restore from Time Capsule using a Time Machine backup from prior to the update so as to rollback the OS to 10.6.6.
The restore failed (screen never got beyond the Apple Screen and the spinning gear aftewr waiting six hours).
So I wiped the harddrive with a high degree of security and then repeated the restore with an even older version of 10.6.6 but the screen still hangs at the Apple screen with the spinning gear.
I will leave it to run over night to see what happens, but I suspect it will still be this way in the morning.
    What do I do next?
The drive was checked out as OK by Disk Utility First Aid.  Is there another utility I should use to check the laptop HD?
    Steven Locke

You can erase & install the system again, and when finished migrate your data within the setup assistant from the backup volume. With this method the system files are installed fresh from disc and not transferred from the backup.

The first thing I'd try is to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.1 updater:

  • Attempting to use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to a mounted partitioned drive?

Had a power surge and my Mac Pro did not fare well. Was able to boot from one of the drives in read only mode, so I did a Time Capsule backup of everything on the drive. Reinstalled Mountain Lion. Booted the computer up and am trying to use Migration Assistant to take the Time Capsule backup and restore it to the 1TB drive. When I use Migration Assistant, it says that there is not enough space on the drive to do the restore. I looked in Disk Utility and saw that the start up disk is another one of the 1TB drives with about 600GB used, therefore not enough space to do the restore. I want to restore to the original drive, but it says it is a "Mounted Partitioned Drive". Can I use Migration Assistant to restore a Time Capsule backup to this mounted partitioned drive?
Thanks in advance for any help - greatly appreciated.

I am not sure, never had to go there, I have multiple bootable clones of the system online and off, and a couple 1500VA/900W UPS units powering everything.

  • Replacing HD with Time Capsule

I currently have time machine backed up to an external hard drive. Another hard drive recently failed and i decided to replace it with Time Capsule.
What is the best way to get time machine transfered to the Time Capsule.
Also, With the files on the bad hard drive showing up on Time machine, how do I get them restored to a different location?

V.K. is correct this is a bit tricky, and the fact that I've done it is not a great example for demonstrating it suitability for general use as I've been at this stuff for over 50 years.
Having said that, the essential thing in any thing like this is to be sure to safely keep the original file and work with copies. Second to be sure - very sure everything is working before even contemplating getting rid of the originals.
Lastly, anything of value should be should be backed up at least twice, and probably by 2 different methods. All backup devices and media will fail at some point and sadly they usually do so without warning. I was lucky, the one backup device that has failed on me _*so far*_ did so immediately after a restore when I went to backup the new system - too close for comfort. Everything we have here is backed up at least twice.
The professional photographers I know also keep backup copies off-site - in case of fire, theft, hurricanes,......
It all depends on how much risk you are willing to take.

  • OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work

    Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis  via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?

tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!

  • Problem with Time Capsule reset and navkuos

    Hello,
I need your assistance. My Time Capsule was configured with account based authentication.
The Time Capsule had an hard reset. Is it still possible to access to the backups and/or restore the Time Capsule previous configuration ?
    Regards,
    RedVivi

According to Time Capsule manual, it's written that a hard reset would retain saved profiles, so I supposed it was saved into the Time Capsule. It is not the case ?
    Manual quotation about Time Capsule:
"*Saved profiles are used in more recent versions of AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule to store up to five configurations, known as profiles. A profile contains base station settings, such as names and passwords, and network configuration information, such as the way the base station connects to the Internet. Using profiles may be useful if you move your device from one location to another."
Is it possible to access to the backup and how ?
    Thanks !
