Been having some serious problems with my two day old ipod. i am sure a complete restore would completely reverse the trend. every time i run updater it thinks for a minute then turns to the typical blue pc window as opposed to its silver mac counterpart and stops responding. when this happens the updater screen also goes blank. i get the folder and ! icon on my ipod now and have tried to restore it in disk mode as well as in regular mode. neither gives me any success. please help!

Sounds like it can't find a valid system and can't write a new one.
I suggest you take it back to the shop.

No. You need a computer with iTunes and an internet connection.
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs and then restore via iTunes:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

I synced my iPhone 4, but it keeps getting the red exclamation points and an error message when I try to download the latest software. And, it won't let me restore the phone without the latest software. I'm stuck.
Then, this morning, the phone locked up completely. I got it to turn off finally, by holding down the power button and home button at the same time for more than 10 seconds. But still no luck with the software download.
It's Thanksgiving, and can't go to Apple.
My phone is my only telephone (no home phone), and I use it to keep track of two email addresses (personal and work). So I'm anxious to have it fully operational.

you need to update your computer and then update your phone

A friend of mine gave me an old iphone to use as a replacement for mine and she no longer has the computer for the itunes which it was synced, nor does she remember the passcode.

As Allan says, it's not possible. Frankly, that makes me feel a whole lot more secure. I would not want to think that if my iPhone were misplaced that someone could get into it without either the computer or passcode.

Restore as a NEW device. Don't use backup at all. Your backup may have corrupt data causing the issue.

Restoring without the AC adapter?

Well, Vista corrupted my 4G Photo iPod when I unwisely decided to split it with Ubuntu. I lost about 12GB of music, but I've managed to get most of it back.
But now, I have to restore the iPod in order to put these new songs on there. I did so today, and now I have a bit of a problem. I lent my adapter to a friend who subsequently had it stolen from him in Cancun. Because I need to plug it in to the AC adapter in order to finish the process, I'm pretty much left hanging. I'd rather not go out and buy the adapter, as it is quite expensive. Is there no way to complete the process without the adapter? I have no other USB devices that perform a similar function.

Try inserting the USB plug only part way into the USB port. The +5V and Ground lines are a bit longer than the data lines, so when you plug them in, they make contact first. If you only plug it in part way to connect just those two lines, you can sometimes fool the iPod into thinking it is on a charger.

You have no choice but to restore the phone.
However, I'm sure you've been smart enough to have backed up your data before starting the most significant update in iOS history,right?

How clean does a Factory Restore get the computer?

Hi there. I searched through the posts on the forum and learned some information, but have not seen a specific answer to my question.
My computer is a Z60m with XP Pro.
I caught a bad virus masquerading as an anti-virus. It was terribly obvious it was bad news and I switched my internet off almost immediately. My desktop had changed to a wallpaper stating "Warning: your're in danger!' and a fake antivirus tried to run every 30 seconds.I believe it was "System Security 2009."
I tried antivirus programs and nothing would run; I could not even boot to safe mode. It gave me a blue screen instead. I deicded the best course of action was to start over and used the ThinkVantage button to "restore factory settings."
It worked, I have new Windows XP. Updated to servicepack 2 and 3, downloaded a few antivirus programs and scanned. They all show a clean computer. I had one remnant of the "System Security 2009" virus Malwarebytes found in safe mode and fixed it.
My question is: is there any way the virus survived? Could it infect the hidden area the R&R is kept? If so, how do I find out? I am really paranoid to use any passwords until I am 100% sure I killed this thing.

If you recover to factory condition, this should reformat the discs and reinstall all the drivers and windows, it will rewipe the hdd.
