Restrict printing via MAC address

I am currently using Mac OS 10.2 server and now we are considering upgrading to 10.4 because of better printer servers. We don't current use the server software for printer serves. We would like to have the ability to restrict printing to the printer via the computers MAC address. Is this possible via server 10.4?
Thanks in advance

You could use the firewall to block certain IP addresses from printing.
You can ensure certain computers receive consistent IP adddresses via DHCP using Server Admin > DHCP > Settings > Static Maps which depends on MAC addresses.

  • Restricting access via MAC address?

    Hello,
Could someone please tell me how to restrict access to my wireless network (and internet sharing) by only allowing computers with a certain MAC address to join?
    I'm kinda stumbling around here
    Thanks,
    Jonny

Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough...
I have my eMac set up as a Software Base Station, which streams internet & Airtunes to an Airport Express. I have it set up this way, because my ADSL modem is connected via USB (so it's a bit of a workaround). As a result, I have Internet Sharing switched on, so I can access it from all my other macs.
What I want to do is to stop other people from accessing my eMac's internet connection. If I set up a WEP password for Internet Sharing, I lose my Airtunes facility... so I was thinking another way might be to restrict access to the connection via MAC address. I only want my other airport card-equipped macs to access the internet connection and network generally.
    Surely it's possible?

  • How to hide or rename the HP Printer's Mac address from Lion Finder Sidebar

I have an HP d100a all in one printer, and since upgrading to OSX 10.7 (Lion), my printer's mac address shows up in the Finder Sidebar under Shared devices. I understand this is for the printers SD card slot to be shared over my network, however the name is not user friendly.
Is there a way to rename what is displayed in the Finder window, from the devices mac address to a friendlier name?
If not, is there a way to disable the sharing of the SD card slot so it is hidden from the sidebar completely?
I have found several posts from people not knowing what this entry is, but I have not managed to find any posts that explain how to rename or hide the entry.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also registered to this forum to inform that the problem with showing the MAC-address in the sidebar of the finder is still not solved.
The strange thing is that the Embedded Web Server says:
"This specifies the Bonjour domain name assigned to the device, in the form <host name>.local. If a user-specified host name has not been assigned, the default host name HPxxxxxx is used, where xxxxxx are the last 6 digits of the LAN hardware (MAC) address. This option cannot be modified."
But I did assign a user-specified host name and that name does show-up everywere (also within Bonjour), except in the sidebar of the finder (hp###xx##x####). Lots of people have the same issue, when searching on the interet, but not one has found the solution.
Please help with solving this issues?

  • Photoshop: Printing: via Mac from printer on Windows 7

    Hi all,
First off - if you know a better place I should be posting this question, please inform.
I'm trying to print from Photoshop onto a printer connected via a windows computer. I've tried everything and am nearly at the point of paying somebody 40 bucks to just set it up for me. This is a pain since I have to interrupt the person working at the windows computer just to send an order to print.
Printer: Epson Stylus Pro 9600 Ultrachrome Ink
    Connected to: Windows 7 Computer
    Shared to: iMac 10.8.3
    Set windows to workgroup
Made sure workgroup same name in Mac
Set all shared settings in Windows to everyone and allowed everyone to make all changes
Set printer sharing settings to everyone and allow to print/manage.
Tried connecting printer from Mac finder: Go > Connect to Server > smb://[IP address] AND smb://[user@computer]/users
Tried connecting printer from Print & Scan section of System Preferences: + > Windows > workgroup > jim-pc (computer name). It asks me for a name and password at this point. No name and password combination works. Tried "guest" "guest" and that seemed to work until I tried printing. Instead of completing the print job it states something like "Waiting for Authorization". I tried authorizing as "guest" "guest" but the print disappears from the queue.
Tried connecting from Print & Scan: + > Advanced > Type: LPD/LPR Host of Printer, Device: Another Device, URL: "Ipd://[IP Address]. Left name as IP address. Tried Generic PostScript Printer - didn't work. Tried Epson S9600 drive (updated it)- didn't work. Tried Generic PCL Printer and it actually printed a test page! It left the printer running like it was thinking, though. When I went to print from Photoshop it no longer worked and I couldn't print a test page. I tried the same thing with changing the name to no avail.
I'm completely at a loss. I've gone over all of the options I've found on other forums. I spent 6+ hours (yep) trying to figure this out on the weekend. If anyone has any ideas, helpful links and/or step-by-step guides I would be grateful. If you need more information or you're part of a site like crossloops and want that $40... I think I'm at that point now!
    Thanks for reading,
    Riley

You will need a print server software on your Windows machine. There is no way to print directly via a Windows share from Mac.

  • Printer showing MAC address in sidebar

I have just setup a Canon MX850 printer on my home network and the MAC address of it is showing in the sidebar. The only way to remove it is to change the sidebar preferences which I don't want to do as I want to see other servers on the network. How do I change the printer settings to show the MX850 instead of the printers MAC address?

I have never seen this with any of my Canon printers. I have an iP5200R that is connected wirelessly to my network and an iP6000D that is connected to the USB port of an Airport Extreme. When I configured the iP5200R to join my wireless network, it was displayed in the Canon utility with its MAC address. Also, when I added its printer queue using More Printers > Canon IJ Network, the printer was also shown in the list with its MAC address. However, as I write this reply this printer does not display in any part of the Finder.
Is the printer displayed under the Shared section in the sidebar?
Also, how is the printer connected to your network? Is it being shared by another computer or is it connected via Ethernet or wireless?

  • Using NAR to restrict access by MAC address

    Hello All,
We have a solution where home users connect via ATM onto our network. Currenty their radius requests are passed onto Cisco ACS 3.3 and they are authenticated using RSA SecurID Fobs to an ACE server.
I am trying to look at an alternative to using a SecurID fob and restrict the end user's access based on MAC address.
I found this on the online documentation for ACS 3.3
    "About Non-IP-based NAR Filters
A non-IP-based NAR filter (that is, a DNIS/CLI-based NAR filter) is a list of permitted or denied "calling"/"point of access" locations that you can use in restricting a AAA client. However, by entering an IP address in place of the CLI you can use the non-IP-based filter even when the AAA client does not use a Cisco IOS release that supports CLI or DNIS. In another exception to entering a CLI, you can enter a MAC address to permit or deny; for example, when you are using a Cisco Aironet AAA client. The format of what you specify in the CLI box—CLI, IP address, or MAC address—must match the format of what you receive from your AAA client. You can determine this format from your RADIUS Accounting Log."
If I specify a clients MAC in any of the non IP NAR options (CLI, Port, DNIS)access is refused. I am using radius IETF and the only time I can see the MAC in the radius accounting logs is when I turn on the option to log cisco-av-pair. Nothing is being logged under CLI or DNIS, so I don't think I can restrict access based on MAC using a non IP NAR. Has anyone implemented what is referred to in the documentation above? Is it just applicable to cisco Aironet? Any ideas?
    Thanks.

A NAR is a definition, which you make in Cisco Secure ACS, of additional conditions that must be met before a user can access the network. Cisco Secure ACS applies these conditions using information from attributes sent by your AAA clients. So it is not device specific.

  • Is it possible to restrict printing via e-mail to one or a few domains?

    Regarding HP ePrinting
Per default any emails will be printed, it is possible to restrict to certain e-mail addresses
Is it possible to restrict print per e-mail to a domain or a few domains, to get a better security and a more simple administration?
    example:
e-mail addresses: [email protected], [email protected] ... etc.
    Rule in HP ePrint: *@mymaildomain.com

    Hi,
It is possible to restrict printing for allowed senders only,
You will have to add any email you would like to allow accessing, adding a bulk domain nake is not possible..
ePrintCenter lets you control who can e-mail print jobs to your HP product from mobile or network connected devices. Follow these steps set your ePrint-enabled product to receive print jobs from allowed senders only.
Log into your ePrintCenter account at HP ePrintCenter .
On the ePrintCenter Printers page, click ePrint Settings . The ePrint Settings window opens.
On the Allowed Senders tab, select Allowed Senders Only , and then click Save .
Type an allowed sender's email address in the dialog box, and then click Add Email . The email address is added to the Allowed Email Addresses list.
NOTE:You may specify up to 500 e-mail addresses allowed to send print jobs to your product. Your HP product ignores e-mail from addresses not on your allowed senders list.
(Optional ). To send a confirmation email to the sender after the ePrint job prints successfully, select the check box next to the email address in the Email job status column.
NOTE:To remove an email address from the Allowed Email Addresses list, click the X next to the email address in the Remove column.

  • DHCP via Mac Address

I have a Cisco 831 router. I am handing out DHCP to my network via the router
    ip dhcp pool HmPrivate
    network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    default-router 192.168.1.1
    dns-server 192.168.1.20
    domain-name hmprivate.net
What I am trying to do is assign the same ip address to my laptop via DHCP by associating the mac address of the laptop to the DHCP ip address. This is easily done on a windows server.
I have not been able to figure it out on this router though. I have looked at the commands under the pool as well as in config mode. Nothing is jumping out at me.
    Any assistance is greatly appreaciated!

Ok I powered up my laptop got an ip address from the rtr of 192.168.1.21. On the router i did a sh arp to get my hardware address of 0015.0025.60aa. I then created the new DHCP pool for the static entry. From my windows laptop i do an ipconfig / release then a ipconfig / renew. I keep getting the 192.168.1.21 address and not the 192.168.1.13 address that I want.
Am I missing something really simple here? Why wont the laptop grab the 192.168.1.13 address?

  • Wireless connect to HP1025 colour printer via Mac Yosemite (10.10.1)

Since upgrading to OS 10.10,1  I can no longer wirelessly print to my HPCP 1025. i tried connecting my Mac via USB to the printer - that works and prints. Whlst connected to the printer via USB I tried to get an update for a wireless print driver from the Mac App store - it didn't find one.
My Mac is displaying my printer in the WiFi dropdown menu and there is a clear, strong signal but my Mac is not connecting to it. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Have you tried powercycling your printer, router, and Mac?  Have you tried updating the printer firmware?  Also, you may want to verify that your router is configured to properly forward bonjour packets.

  • How to assign static ip via mac address on LINKSYS WRT54G2

? how do i assign an ip per mac address with this router? i can't seem to find the option and its becoming a real pain
on my buffalo router i can paste a mac address and assign and ip for each mac on my network

The feature that you are looking for is called "DHCP reservation".  This feature is not available on the WRT54G2.  Several of the newer Linksys wireless n routers support this feature.
You can assign your computer a fixed (static) LAN IP address, however, you will need to do it manually.  Linksys has some very specific rules about assigning fixed LAN IP addresses.  Be sure to follow them carefully.
Rules for using fixed LAN IP addresses on Linksys routers:
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99 or
    192.168.1.150 thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0 and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1 and "DNS server" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.

  • Filtering and Monitoring via Mac-Address

    Hi everyone.
Is it possible to filter and monitor a user's device via it's mac-add?
For example, I want to filter facebook and youtube in our company. I also want to have a status report regarding which mac-addresses are attempting to go into the sites that I have blocked.
    Is this feasible?
    Thanks in advance.

A lot depends on what systems you have and are using; but generally not directly (assuming basic systems and tools). You'd have to correlate logs and arp tables etc.
Advanced solutions such as ISE can do this but that's a much bigger discussion.

  • Accessing windows shared printer via mac over wireless

So i want to share my deskjet 812c thats attached to my pc and be able to print via my MBP over wireless. I simply shared teh printer in windows, but have yet been able to figure it out, or to get it to work. It seems that the MBP will not see the printer, so any advice or any walk throughs would be appreciated.
    Thanks

To connect to a shared Windows printer, open the Printer Setup Utility and click More Printers. For the new window, click the drop-down and select Windows Printing and then Network Neighborhood. The workgroup name that has been configured in the Windows computer should display. Double-click the workgroup name and then select the computer name from the new list. A new window will appear asking you to enter your Windows account name and password. Enter these details and click OK. Select the printer share name from the list and then for the Printer Model, browse to HP and then to the Deskjet 812C. If this model is not listed, download a copy of Gutenprint 5.0.0 for Mac OS X (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3). This has the 812C which you can use for network printing. With the 812C selected, click Add.
Note that if you are not prompted to authenticate to the Windows computer, then this can impact your ability to connect to shares, especially on XP SP2. You will need to either enable the Guest account or create an account on the Windows computer for the MacBook.

  • Wireless connects via MAC address, but not with essid.

I have an eee 901 using the zeneee901 kernel. I got wireless to work out of the box to an extent. This will probably be easier to exlain just posting the commands.
    ifconfig ra0 up
    iwlist ra0 scan
    iwconfig ra0 essid *essid here*
    dhcpcd ra0
    TIMEOUT GOES HERE
    iwconfig ra0 ap MACADDRESS
    dhcpcd ra0
    Connected!
This wouldn't be so bad except I can'tuse Wicd. This was happening way before I installed Wicd btw.
    What's the deal?

R00KIE wrote:The way you do it I don't know, but in wicd you can select an option to associate by essid instead of mac address and it works fine for me.
Someone else might be able to answer your question. Maybe you can consider using another network connection manager, would makes things easier. Although knowing why it doesn't work is also good
That's good, but I can't find that option. Where is it?

  • How to look up a wireless client via MAC address

One of my AirPort Expresses shows a wireless client whose MAC address I don't recognize. Is there some utility that will show me info (manufacturer, etc) of a wireless MAC address?
Also, under what conditions would one choose to set up the Wireless Mode of an AirPort Express (Extreme) to "Extend a wireless network" and when would you choose "Participate in a WDS network"? The help files don't explain this stuff very well.

If the "g" Express is set to "join", it does not extend the wireless signal, it receives the wireless signal as if it were a computer. The idea behind "join" was to provide a means for users to stream AirTunes to a remote location with an amplifier and speakers.
If you are not using it to stream AirTunes, there's really no reason to have it powered on. As you have probably discovered, the ethernet port on the "g" Express is not active.
You'll need to recheck some settings on your main base station, the Extreme to make sure that it is setup correctly. Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab below the icons. Just make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". Update to save any changes.
The "n" Express should be configured using AirPort Utility, Manual Setup, Wireless tab. Check that your Wireless Mode is "extend a wireless network" and make sure there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients".
As you have discovered, the ethernet port is also active on the "n" Express when you have it set to "extend" and it will also stream AirTunes. Great features on the "n" Express.
You might think about adding another "n" Express to extend to another area.
Ethernet is always the best choice for speed and stability if you are able to hide the wire through the house. If it's not feasible to run an ethernet cable, take a look at ethernet powerline adapters.
You would use a pair, one device at the Extreme end and one at the other end where you want the signal to go. These devices use the home wiring to transport an ethernet signal and they work very well. Not quite as good as straight ethernet, but close and far better than wireless overall.
I bought a pair from DirecTV to setup the On Demand service because I didn't want to crawl through a hot attic to run an ethernet cable from my office router to the DVR. Much faster than wireless...and I previously had a very good wireless connection between my Time Capsule and the Express I was using to extend.
Hope you get things figured out soon.
