Restricting iPad's in Educational Institution

Hello All...
I was hoping that someone could help me... I'm a network engineer for a private high school. More and more of our students are bringing in their personal iPad's and iPhones. We have been restricting these devices from coming on our network. Some of our concerns are:
- The camera on the phone and iPad. It can be used to take pictures of tests and then shared to other students who haven't taken the test yet
- Video conferencing...
There's other concerns too, but to I think you might get the point with what I have listed already.
My question is... Is there a way that I can restrict the use of these things ONLY while the student's have their device on our network? I know that your able to restrict these things with MDM in Lion Server, but the devices are not the school's assets. So we cant honestly disable the camera when the student is at home or other places.
I love to know if there is a solution out there as we really do want to allow these devices on our network.
Thanks!

Didn't I read that your at a private school.  You can expell the cheaters.
Don't punish the honest people to catch a few cheaters. The cheaters don't need all this high tech to cheat anyway.
- The camera on the phone and iPad. It can be used to take pictures of tests and then shared to other students who haven't taken the test yet
I hear the iPad camera isn't that great anyway.  Check the resolution & the distance you need to take the photo.
So does ever digital camera in the world.  Your not blocking much.
iPad 1 didn't have a camera!
- Video conferencing...
Have you tried this? Does it work?  How does it find the other iDevice?
See this article for what ports to block.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507
The kids can establish a private network of their own. Some devices support peer-to-peer networks.
Here is a battery power router.  I guess you could hid it by a window or just route between the cheaters.

  • Multi Folio App for Educative Institution

    Hello,
We are an educative institution and have an internal magazine which we view in iPad with Adobe Content Viewer.
Now we want to publish to App store and we already have the Apple Dev Account, and all Certificates and Assets ready too.
My question is: ¿What is the simplest, and, well, cheapest way to publish our multi folio app?
I see that with a Creative Cloud Account you get the DPS but only single edition. Do we have to purchase the DPS Pro Edition in order to publish Multi Folio App or is there another way?
We also have the CS5.5 license for education. Are there any special offers for Educative Intitutions?
    Thank you so much
    Eduardo Flores

You can purchase DPS Professional Account either Monthly or Annual to create Multi Issue Apps. I do not think that there are any offers for DPS Pro edition.

  • Non-educational institution courses

Forgive me if this isn't the correct forum in which to ask this question...I'm considering the use of iTunes U for training purposes with my local fire department.  Is this appropriate use of an iTunes U account, or must I be affiliated with an Accredited Educational Institution?  I just want to make sure that I'm not breaking any rules.

    Hello there phyrngn,
It does indeed look like being an educational institution is a requirement to create an iTunes U course, according to this article:
    Apple - iPad - iTunes U
    Enroll as an Institution.
K-12 school districts, colleges, and universities can distribute courses and collections of education content by signing up with Public Site Manager.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

I think all you have to do is go to the App Store and download Lightroom mobile onto your mobile device. You don't need another package in order to get it.

I would hope Apple makes this iTunes U approval process as individual for the educational institutions as they are for the individual student's learn needs and qualifications. Can an educational institution that is not accredited use these wonderful tools?

I see that Common Sense Meda offers courses.  I don't believe they are an accredited educational institution.  Approval may be on a case by case basis so Apple can control the experience.  I hope it's open.
I'm more concerned that Apple is excluding accredited educational institutions in many countries.

Sounds like a phishing attempt. They want your Apple Store information in a reply to the e-mail to steal your identity. Apple generally is good in their e-mails about spelling, spacing, and punctuation. Whenever you see something remotely unEnglish about an e-mail, suspect it to not be real. Verify with the store you ordered from that there is an investigation. DO NOT RESPOND TO THE E-MAIL directly or through links in the e-mail.

  • Restricting iPad Video & App volume

I'm forever asking my kids to turn the volume to half when using their iPads.
Especially when watching Videos. Is there a way I can limit the volume to halfway? I know it can be done for music, but I can't see a solution for video & apps. Surely I can't be the first person with this issue?

Settings > General > Restrictions > Enable Restrictions > ALLOW CHANGES: Volume Limit > Don't Allow Changes

  • When turning Off Restrictions, iPad moves previously restricted apps to the home screen

    I this normal?
I've had the iPad Air for about 2 weeks now... and I'm sure I haev set and disables restrictions about a week ago with no problem....
    But now..
If I restrict apps for age 9+ for example... those apps will be hidden from their folders... which is good and works as it should be.
When I then disable the restrictions it takes the app shortcut out of the folder and leaves it on the home screen!
To test this again I again enabled restrictions on ALL apps and then disabled the restrictions.... and the result was that ALL of my downloaded apps got moved out of their folders and placed on the home screen.
The apps like calendar and face time that come with the iPad were left in their folders.
    What's going on????

Thanks for the help... It's too bad that it works that way.... I have folders for each person in the family and wanted to age-restrict apps when my kids were playing, then disable restrictions whenever I was going to use it.... I guess I'll just have to leave those age restricted apps on the home screen.
    I have submitted feedback.

  • Hi, i am using ipad for some dental apps from itunes like Biohorizons but my Biohorizons app doesnt open up on my ipad recently, soon after i click the app it opens n shuts down by itself, the only reason i am using ipad is patient education.  help n

HI, please help me use itune App on my ipad, Biohorizins doesnt run on my ipad. Please help

If the iPad is an older model or one of smaller capacity, try fully unloading it before running the app as a test.
Double-tap Home so the list of loaded apps shows up, then terminate all by swiping upwards on each. This does NOT erase anything. Tap Home to finish when the only item left is the home screen. Then do a force-restart by holding down Home and Sleep simultaneously until the screen goes dark and the white Apple logo appears, then wait till it finishes starting up.

  • Can any institution be on iTunes U and can the course be restricted somehow?

    Hello all,
I'm working with a client and we're pretty interested in using iPads as a learning platform in our course that we're putting together. iTunes U seems to be a great tool and we're looking at using that as well as an optional tool to add to our workflow.
Firstly, I'm curious to know if any instituion that offers a course is able to get onto iTunes U. I suppose you could even think of it as an internal company course.
I've looked around for answers and I'm still a bit confused. Some say you have to be an accredited education institution, and others say you don't have to be accredited and it's just a matter of Apple approving your institution to be on iTunes U via this page https://eduapp.apple.com/
Secondly, is there a way to restrict access to the courses you provide? The reason is that the iTunes U tools look great for managing materials and teaching a course, but we don't want just anyone being able to access the materials since the course is a paid course. We want to be able to use the tools, but somehow have only the people that actually take the course be able to access the materials on iTunes U.
As a side note, we're looking at iBooks Author to create our textbooks. We won't be selling them on the iBooks store, but we're curious if the only way to get them on the student's (institution-provided) iPads is to manually upload them through iTunes via the Books tab in the iPad sync window. Can iTunes U store textbooks?
Furthermore, we're looking at using Apple Configurator to manage the class iPads that we hand out. Does this also support loading our textbooks onto it? Or would we have to manually do them one-by-one?
Thanks for your time and any answers are appreciated!

You can make ibooks accessable by posting the files on a web server and providing your users with a hyperlink to the file.  Your iOS users then can use safari to download the book.  When you download the file you will be prompted to what program you want to use to view the file.  Just choolse ibooks and it will save the file in your ibooks app for future use.
Note: you must add the ibooks mime type to your web server so it knows what to do wtih the file when a user reqeusts it.
I have tested and confirmed with IIS.

  • How do I restrict company iPads?

We purchased 5 iPads for 5 employees.  We do not want them doing ANYTHING personal on them.  We do not want them downloading ANY apps whatsoever, and want to check on their internet usage.  How can I track this?
    Jeff

You need to consider the cost benefit ratio for restriction their activities.  It may be cheaper to ignore the issue.  See below on how to restrict.  At a minimum, you will want to set up the activation lock.
The problem arises when someone sets the activation lock which is set by logging onto your apple id then setting the appropriate option.   DEP is the preferred preventative.  It established your organization as the owner.  The student cannot set an activation log.
How password and activation lock work:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1212
How to go about restricting iPad activities.
You need to in-role the iPad in the DEP program.  This makes your company the owner of the ipad.  It locks the ipad to an mdm of your choosing.  You control the ipad through the mdm.
You may want to consider an all-in-one app.  These are designed for business security.  The ipad user does all the business functions in the business app.  You could lock the ipad to just the business app.
The Good Collaboration Suite includes Good for Enterprise, Good Share and Good Connect secure mobile apps, simplifying access to email, calendar, contacts, tasks, instant messaging, browsing and document sharing. These apps are built using Good’s next-gen containerization   that includes secure data sharing between any Good secured app as well as app-level encryption independent of the device used."
