Results are in:  Leopard slower then Tiger on PowerPC

Xbenched this yesterday. Dual booting on a 12" PowerBook...both Leopard and Tiger boot have Dashboard disabled and are running iStat Menu. Though the back end is slight faster, check out the User Interface and Graphic entries...finally explains why I "felt" that Leopard is slower then Tiger on this machine..it is!

The Leopard interface is definitely more graphics intensive (and I have heard suggestions that Leopard transfers more work to the graphics card than earlier versions of OSX). I guess at some level of hardware any processing efficiencies will be outweighed by the load on the graphics card. In other words, can you be sure that your results would replicate on a PPC machine with a more powerful graphics card and more VRAM?

  • Leopard Slower than Tiger?

I've noticed a definite difference in start-up time - Leopard 27-28 seconds, Tiger 16-17 seconds. Also general navigation and reaction times seem slower to me. Anyone else notice this? And is this to be expected?

    Hi tksuther;
Journaling is a process of keeping track of data being written to a disk. It provides protection in case of sudden shutdown of the system so that the disk can be restored to a valid state.
When journaling was introduces to OS X, I did some very extensive testing in an effort to see if journaling was taking up noticeable amounts of resources on the system. After doing my testing I discovered that the difference between disk with journaling turn on or off was so small I could not realistically measure it. The difference was smaller then variability in the test on the disk. Hence I say that it not measurable and I alway leave it turned on.

  • CS4 exports are 5 times slower then in CS2

    System:
    Windows 7 (64)
    AJA Bord
    8 Core System
In CS2 it was possible to make UNCOMPRESSED exports apart from the Adobe Media Encoder. In CS4 all exports seem to run thru the Media Encoder. Most of the exports work faster but I did not find a propper way to export UNCOMPRESSED files.
On the "old" system (4 Core - Windows XP) CS2 exports
    AJA Avi v210 1920x1080
...in nearly real time. The same file with the new setup takes about 5x realtime. The weird thing though h264 also needs about the same amount of time then the uncompressed files. And the problem is not the RAID connected (copying is faster the real time)
    Any Ideas?

Sadly this seems to have no affect on the exporting time. I changed the set
ting USE MAXIMUM RENDER QUALITY (ON+OFF).
Since my input and output is the same (AJA avi v210) the system should not render anything, right?
Uncompressed 8 Bit 4:2:2 Quicktime files are axported in real time. It seems like the problem is the AJA Codec on this Machine.
Again, this is Windows 7 / CS4 and AJA LHE. Maybe I'll have to contact AJA?

  • I upgraded my Mac from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  I did have Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 in my applications and now get a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported."

I just upgraded my MAC from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I try to access my Microsoft Office for MAC (2004 edition) files I am getting a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I access all of my save Word documents?  I just want to be able to retrieve all of my documents that were in Microsoft Office for Mac (2004).  If I purchase the newest version of MS office for Mac from Apple will I be able to retrieve my old documents?

Use any number of free alternatives to your nearly decade old version of MS Office.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice (free)
    OpenOffice (free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for years. Life is better without Microsoft.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • Safari on Snow Leopard slow

I have loved safari 4 and have used it dedicatedly on leopard with ad block for the last 1 year. However, since I upgraded to snow leopard, and not having ad block, I feel safari is extremely slow. Is anyone else experiencing such a speed drop?

I have the same issue. Pages that were nearly instant before are now exceedingly slow (www.google.com, for example, takes about 7 seconds). I have several other computers on the same network that are either running Leopard or Windows that don't have this problem, so it's not a DNS issue. I've also verified that my network connection isn't saturated.
    I've tried the following:
    * Resetting Safari
    * Emptying the cache
    * Repairing permissions
    * Deleting all subfolders of ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    * Deleting Downloads.plist, History.plist, and LastSession.plist
    * Removing everything from both the system and account copies of the InputMethods and Internet Plugins folders
This should essentially be a clean install of Safari, but it is still exceedingly slow. Note that it's not consistent: it will load a page quickly then, 5 seconds later, the same page will take a very long time to load.
Sometimes, most of the items on the page will come in nearly instantaneously, but suddenly the page will stop loading for a good 5 to 10 seconds. Once that time elapses, the rest of the page suddenly downloads.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Can I uninstall leopard and install tiger without problems?

I'm considering purchasing a refurb iMac - I don't want an iMac mind you, but the Mac Pros are simply priced way over my head and I need a new computer!
I can't get a straight answer from Apple about whether it will have Tiger or Leopard on it but because of Adobe's refusal to make CS2 compatible with Leopard, I must use Tiger.
I've been told I can, if I must, uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger but I've also been told I'll end up with a host of problems doing that
does anyone know if this will work or not?
Apple is driving me crazy... no one will asnwer that question for me
and why they don't have a mid-range Mac Pro is beyond me but what do I know?
    thank you

    Hi liliths!
I look at the Apple Store refurbs list on a daily basis.
The longer you wait, the higher the chances that you will receive an iMac that was produced following Oct 26, and was therefore released with Leopard as the MINIMUM version of OS X. Currently, I'd guess that there is VERY little (almost zero) chance of that - today - but more chance as each day passes.
A refurb purchased now will have Tiger on DVD, and Tiger installed. The box will contain an upgrade disc that will install Leopard.
As time goes on, Apple will start to receive Leopard Macs (Leopard on DVD, and installed, but no Tiger) produced after Oct 26 that get shipped back from the stores after buyers have returned them. Those returns to Apple, and Apple's refurbishment process, do not occur overnight. Those Leopard Macs will not be able to run Tiger, or if they will run it, it will not be supported by Apple (no phone support/no warranty until Leopard would be installed).
Refer to this Apple Support article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497
There are some (lower-priced) Mac Pros sold with the slower processor option, but they are seldom seen on the refurb list, and sell quickly when do appear. One would certainly sell within minutes of being placed on the list this close to the holidays. (A good alternative at a close price w/o sales tax: eBay 250194178376)
There are others besides Apple selling the older production Macs and advertising that they have Tiger on them, not Leopard. (From a third party, I very recently purchased a Mac Pro NIB with Tiger only.) Those units will be available less and less as each day goes by. I have purchased a Leopard family pack for possible future use.
Don't wait too long to make up your mind, or the choice will no longer be available for you:) A mid-priced Mac Pro might be one of the last G5s, so you might want to look at eBay item 120191603098 (I have no affiliation on either eBay item, just a bystander).

As to the question iMac vs Mac Pro or G5 - do you already have a display for a tower? A big factor in the decision.

  • Remote IP address invalid - not using Leopard, still on Tiger

I am looking for help! I see many solutions for people having this problem who are on Leopard, but my work MAC is still running Tiger and I am now getting this error when someone tries to video chat with me. When I try and video chat with buddies, the error I get back is "Erica (workMAC) did not respond" (Note: Erica (work MAC) is my user name...). I did not have trouble with this previously. The only thing that has changed since the last time I video-chatted is that the static IP address our internet provider assigned to us has been changed, due to recent upgrades to the service in my area. I suspect this is a culprit, but cannot find out how to fix the problem. Suggestions?

The Error 4 refers normally to one end being on Leopard and the problem being at then end.
It is normally seen by the end without the problem.
I have not seen it Tiger to Tiger chats.
As you are on Tiger that does not preclude the others from being on Leopard.
However I would still be interested in the new Internet Service.
I have heard of situations during upgrades where in (Downstream) and out (upstream) data is actually over two routes to maintain speeds.
Effectively the ISP routes you through two IPs in fairly simple terms
This may have something to do with what is going on here.

  • Personal File Sharing failure between Leopard MBP and Tiger iMac

    Hi,
I am attempting to give the iMac access to files on the Leopard using Personal File Sharing. Personal File Sharing is turned on on the MBP. The firewall on the MBP has been variously set for Essential Services Only and turned off. The firewall on the iMac is off (it has no internet connection). I have tried both encrypted and unencrypted ad-hoc wireless networking on various channels. I have tried ethernet. The results are always the same:
    1) the MBP will appear in the Network folder of the iMac, but any attempt to connect fails. I am unable even to reach a Drop Box.
    2) the iMac appears in the Shared section of the Sidebar on the MBP, and connections of all kind work without problems
I have no internet connection in the house and am unable to try connecting both Macs to the same WiFi network for testing purposes. I have tried pinging each machine from the other using Network Utility, with failure reported in every case ---however, I'm led to believe this is not unusual in small network circumstances.
One other piece of info that may be relevant: I am also struggling to have my iPod touch found by my MBP when attempting to use the WebDAV protocol to share files with Files Lite. My iMac connects to Files Lite without issue. Stanza Desktop also refuses to find Stanza. Cyberduck will find Files Lite on the network from the MBP (the only app to recognise it in any way from my MBP), but will consistently fail to connect. Perhaps this is related?
Any help would be welcome. I can provide more information as needed. I have only offered the information I thought would be useful, and that fits within my layman's understanding of networking.
    Thanks.
    S.

    Hi,
Well, it's all working fine now. Seems I /hadn't/ tried turning off the firewall on the MBP. The PFS now works with the firewall off or with "Set access for specific services and applications", but not "Essential services only".
*shrugs* I was so sure I'd tried it with the firewall off…
So, thanks! All is now kushti. I may have to grumble to myself a little (and ultimately to Apple) about the lack of co-operation between the firewall and the Sharing prefs, and what I perceive as a poverty (or at least poor layout) of information in the firewall settings pane, though. I mean, why can't the firewall automatically choose the correct setting depending on the Sharing preferences? Or, at least, provide a pop-up that such a change is necessary? Hmm…
    Ta!
    S.
PS: FYI, "guest" sharing was already enabled, presumably by default.

  • When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, and the safe search button is inoperable. Suggestions?

When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, the remainder of the results page is blank, and the safe search button is inoperable. When I turn off private browsing and refresh the page, everything works again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have got the same behaviour after the last Safari Update to 5.1.3. It seems that Safari now handles some scripts in a new way. If you debug the Google Website, you will see, that there is some Javascript Error, that seems to prevent to write into local cache. After some searching I wasn't able to finde a solution for this problem, other then disabling Javascript while private browsing to prevent the script loading. You then are able to use Google with the old layout. The option to disable JavaScript can be found in the Menu "Developer", wich has to be enabled in Safari in the options first.
In my opinion this is a bug that is now occuring, because Apple changed something in private browsing and that has to be fixed by Google now, to run again. Or we will have to wait for 5.1.4, as you can read online Apple will change and bugfix the javascript engine in that version, perhaps this fixes the problem as well. I hope so!
If anyone is in the developer program perhaps you could test this with the beta of 5.1.4 and tell us if it works.

HELP!! i have a ton of videos of my boys stored in iPhoto..They played fine on my old OSX system (leopard).  However, I just upgraded to snow leopard and then to mountain lion and now i can't open my videos at all anymore.  HELP!!

Can you tell us about one or more of the video files - what are they?  QuickTime?  MP4?  Something else?  How did you create the video files in the first place?
I do a lot of video and when I upgraded to Snow Leopard I discovered that many of the QT videos that I had created previously (via iMovie & Final Cut) would not play correctly in QuickTime X - the bizarre behavior was that QT X acted as if my video files were only audio files!  I reported this to Apple at the time but never heard anything back, and there hasn't been any change in later updates to QT X.
The solution was to (re)install QuickTime 7.  But first look in your Applications > Utilities folder.  When you upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the installer normally moves the old QT 7 program to your Utilities folder.  If it's there, try using QT 7 to play one of your video files.    If QT 7 is not there, you can download and install it from here  Make sure you are running at least OS X 10.6.3 before you install QT 7.  It's even better if you make sure you are running 10.6.8 which was the last release of Snow Leopard.

  • Search results are not accurate

    hi,
am facing a unique issue in SP 2013. Whenever we search for a search criteria the results returned is not accurate always. Every time we navigate across pages, the search results change which is not
a desired behavior. However we also noticed that the refiner panel does not change as well and it retains the old count which leads to inconsistent results when user selects a criteria from the refiner.
any pointers /  helpful links  regarding this issue, if any anyone has surfaced,  is highly appreciated!
    Das

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that search results are not accurate.
I recommend to run a full crawl and then to check whether the search results are correct.
If your incremental crawl is running, it may happen that, when you are viewing the data in the search result web part, the newly added content are not crawled yet.
So, after the content are updated, wait for some time.
Let your incremental crawl finish. Then view the results on the page.

  • Retrieving BEx Query Results Area for use in Excel formulas

    Hello,
I run BEx queries in workbooks and then use Excel formulas ( mostly VLOOKUP(LookupValue, ResultsArea, ColumnReturned,) ) to retrieve certain information from the query ResultsArea.
    ****Problem:
Depending on the query parameters, the query "Results Area" is larger or smaller.
    ****Non-optimal solution:
One way to define the  ever changing Excel range occupied by the Results Area is to create an Excel name as:
    QueryRange = OFFSET(QueryFirstCell,,,COUNTA(OFFSET(Sheet1!$A:$A,,COLUMN(QueryFirstCell)-1,,)),COUNTA(OFFSET(Sheet1!$1:$1,ROW(QueryFirstCell)-1,,,)))
Then, the only input required is the top-left cell of the Results Area, which stays the same (unless the query definition changes).
    ****Question
What is the best way to refer to an ever-changing query Results Area in an Excel formula?
    Thank you!
    Louis

It is actually much easier than that.
Use a VBA statement like the following:
    Set RptRng = ActiveCell.CurrentRegion
This will retrieve the data in the Results Area, no matter what the size is.
    Hope this helps...

  • Insert a Blank Column in the Results Area of a Workbook

Is it possible to insert a blank column in the results area of a WORKBOOK that does not get affected by free characteristic drill down or refreshing of the corresponding query?  The current workbook looks like follows
    Column A - Characteristic1
    Column B - Characteristic2
    Column C - KeyFigure1
    Column D - KeyFigure2
    Column E - KeyFigure3
    Column F - KeyFigure4
The requirement is that the user wants to enter some estimates between Column B and Column C and Column D and Column E as follows
    Column A - Characteristic1
    Column B - Characteristic2
    Column C - USER ENTRY
    Column D - KeyFigure1
    Column E - KeyFigure2
    Column F - USER ENTRY
    Column G - KeyFigure3
    Column H - KeyFigure4
Column I - CALCULATIONS BASED ON USER ENTRY
First I tried to split the results area and save the workbook.  But when the query is refreshed then the entire results area gets back in one piece.  I succeeded partially by having a key figure with no possible output (i.e., restricting a non-existent value on a characteristic).  Again in here, whatever user inputs will get wiped out with the drill down.  Does any one have any pointers?  Thanks.
    IS

    Hi IS,
As a nearly workaround I can suppose to do the following.
    Create two identical requests.
In the first one hide the columns to the right from your intended new user column. In the second one - hide columns to left.
Knowing the columns number to be shown in each request you can place both request in the same row, but in different columns taking into account that between result areas should be one (or more) additional column.
Data entered by a user will not be wiped out during query refresh or drilldown. Of course, these user data will not conform drilldown operations. So, it is not 100% solution you want.
Another possibility, very hard to implement (if feasible at all), is to write VB code that will monitor user action and will keep data entered by a user somewhere in another sheet and restore them in proper cells after user action (drilldown). But I don't think such coding worth it.

    Hi,
It is possible that the query has ben changed. If you are in the workbook, then go from Change Global and chnage the query and save and click the Green check mark to come back to the workbook, it adds an empty row each time.
    Hope this helps...
