Results in Image Trace don't match Live Trace

I just started using CS6, jumping from CS3. A major tool I use is Live Trace, and I have custom settings for that. I cannot find a way to make Image Trace behave the way Live Trace did for black and white line drawings. The results I get in CS6 are far inferior to those I got in CS3 in terms of retaining the look of the original raster image. Help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I will have to leave CS3 installed just to do my Live Trace.
Here is a sample of what I mean. You can see the quality degredation in CS6 compared to CS3. (And it's much more obvious when it's full size and full resolution.)
My settings used in Live Trace (CS3) were:
The settings I tried in CS6 that gave the above result were:
Thanks for the help!

I was very dissapointed to find out that CS6 is much inferior to CS5 or earlier versions when tracing black and white line drawings or comic art. By the way many users are of the same opinion. Here is a review of CS6 vs CS5 tracing results:
http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/tools-tips/quick-tip-how-to-use-the-new-image-trace-i n-adobe-illustrator-cs6/
And here is my own experience. Whatever settings I try in CS6 the result is just terrible. This one is the best I could get. Details are lost. Lines are very thick.
In comparison, here is how wonderfully the same work is done by CS5, not to mention that I didn't even have to tackle with any settings at all. Just clicked the button Live Trace and got saticfactory results with the default preset.
These are original unreduced files:

P.S. It is sometimes possible to get good results in CS6, if you take the big drawing apart into small separate drawings. However it means a lot of additional work: tens of extra hours in a year in fact. Which, of coarse, undoubtfully means that CS6 is a step backwards if compared with CS5.
Besides some big complex drawings with many details can not be devided into a smaller ones. And if you don't have an earlier version of the program, in this case there is no way to get a quality trace at all!

Not particularly much. Even if AI itself as a 32bit application never uses more than 2GB, it doesn't have it all on your system. You know, operating system and other stuff taking memory, too.... Quite clearly on a heavy live trace with lots of anchor points and paths this could be too much. If it's an option, you might consider a selective approach, i.e. working at lower image resolutions if something is only a large area or by extracting specific features in Photoshop by turning the image into greyscale/ limited color palette images. while there, you may also use selections and convert them into paths, which you then could copy&paste into AI.

  • Image Trace colors don't match selected color group. (Mac, CS6)

When I select the Document Library option when making a color image trace, the colors shift in the image but do not match the selected color group. I've tried multiple color groups, and the colors always change, but never match the selected swatches. Is this typical? Can anyone explain this?

After some additional experimentation, I discovered the problem was with images dragged from iPhoto and dropped into an illustrator file. When I placed the files instead, the colors matched the selected color group. After trying several other images using both methods, it appears as if dragging and dropping from iPhoto is a no-no when wanting to image trace and change the colors.

  • Can I import settings from CS5's Live Trace to CS6's Image Trace?

I'm loving CS6 Illustrator, except for one thing. Image Trace. Here, Adobe seem to have taken away the two most usefull settings from Live Trace, and replaced all the presets with ones that are pretty much unusable. I almost always used either 'Comic Art' or 'Lettering' to trace hand-drawn images, but they're both gone. None of the new settings are good enough, even if I make a custom one. The main issue is that the sliders in Image Trace are for completely different things to those in Live Trace, so it's difficult to translate one set of settings into the other.
With Image Trace, I cannot get the same results as with Live Trace, and so far, have found myself having to have Illustrator CS5 open at the same time as CS6, just so I can get workable traces.
I don't know if it's possible, but is there any way to import the presets from Live Trace, or even the full tool, into CS6, to replace the new Image Trace presets?
If not, does anyone know how to make the equivelant of Comic Art  in Image Trace's new settings?
Images, to help define the problem: This is a close up of a file I was trying to trace, showing the major difference in quality between the two CS versions.
Left: CS5 - Comic Art setting.
Right: CS6 - This is a custom setting, but is the closest I have come to Comic Art thus far.
As you can see, the definition of Image Trace is far lower in quality than Live Trace, giving me one large connected blob of colour rather than the distictly separate lines produced in Live Trace.

I can't show the original as it is a HUGE file, 10000 pixels wide. I scan as high as my scanner will go. And that 10000 is shrunk down already so as not to exhaust my RAM. Below is a smaller version, but yes it is a b/w drawing but on a colour scan. It's been treated using Levels in Photoshop to remove the grey/blue colour of the paper, but nothing else.
I can see round the edges of the black in Photoshop that there are bits of colour, mainly reds/yellows. What do you think I need to do to it to help it trace better?
Actually, I'll throw in my Image Trace settings too, so people can see what settings I'm currenty trying... I got the Threshold directly from Comic Art in CS5.5.

  • Problems with black fills in live trace(d) eps images in Word and certain printers

Hi folks, PLEASE help me with this if you know a possible solution. I regularly run Live Trace in Illustrator CS3 on my grayscale bmp or tiff scanned images, save them as an eps, then folks in other departments insert them into Microsoft Word pages. Sometimes these images display in Word with unintended black fills, and some printers print them out with the same corrupted appearance, yet some other printers print them fine (even if the display in Word shows them with the unintended black fills). I THINK this might be a postscript issue (?). I don't have the option of telling everyone to change from Word to InDesign (which would absolutely solve the problem immediately). Is there something I can set while performing Live Trace? They really need the eps files, so I don't have the option of saving them as another format. HELP! Thanks...

I use Mac at home and love it. At work, we use PC platform. I can't save as a pdf because they need to stay vector graphics. he departments want us to save the eps in version 8 because they're STILL using Windows 2003 (ugh). I keep thinking there must be something I can do while in Live Trace because we've never noticed any inintended black fills in graphics not created using Live Trace. Somehow, Word and some printers are not interpreting some postscript language correctly. InDesign has zero issues with it. Some printers have no problem with it, so I assume they are postscript printers. There's got to be a way I can still save as an eps but without the postscript conflict (IF that's what it is).

  • CS6 Image Trace Ignore White feature does not work as expected coming from Live Trace in 5 and 5.5

When I click ignore white in 5 or 5.5 using say a basic black and white image I'm tracing, I get zero white. Usually for our purposes, we will direct select the frame and remove it then drag select all the artwork and color it whatever pantone the customer needs, save, place in the InDesign document relevant tot he image, and send to print. In CS6, ignore white leaves, ironically, a ton of white so deleting the frame and then drag selecting gives you a question mark in color and of course it follows that coloring, colors all kinds of things. Same picture, two different versons of trace and our job just got alot more time consuming.

This is exactly the criticism that I have posted on occasion.
Instead of producing an orderly stack of objects like Streamline did, Live Trace produces compound paths.
So if you want to simplify your trace and avoid duplicate paths you need to release the compound(s) and rearrange the stack. This takes time and a certain amount of skill.
With Steamline you could of course make your own compounds if you needed them, but making a compound is a simpler business than releasing one and editing the colours of the resulting stack.
Does anyone know whether Streamline is available for OS X?

  • Live Trace image looses quality in After Effects

    Hello,
I created an image using live trace and saved it as a ".ai" file. I thought that saving it like this would allow to have the same quality in After Effects. However the After Effects image looks pixilated. I apologize if this is not enough information to fix the problem but I am still new to both programs. Attached are two images, one from After Effects and the other from Illustrator.
    Thanks,
    Alex
Also if someone could please tell me how to get rid of the white background in my illustrator file that would be great.

You need to turn on continuous rasterization in After Effects

  • Live trace for more than 10 images at a time please

I need help with an effect I would like to do by applying live trace to a folder of images that later will be asembled as a movie in after effects. I'm not a good scriptor and the only way I have been able to get this to work is in bridge using the live type export. This works excellent only I am limited to 10 images at a time which is not good when there are 30 images in 1 second of video. If I want to apply this effect to hundreds of illustrator files is there a better way.
Please script experts in adobe land help me. The pay off will be really nice if only I can get it to work. Thanks. -tyler

    Hi Tyler,
Open the script file and near the top (about line #34 change the "10" to what ever number you would like. You may want to keep a back up copy in a safe location prior to making modifications and depending on the number or files you set the new value to you may notice long periods of time that it seems as if the Bridge has hung or stopped responding.
    Cheers,

  • Illustrator CS4 - Batch Live Trace all images in one directory?

    Hello everyone
I have 200 pages or so scanned at the same resolution from a notepad, which I would like to vectorize.
Since they're all pretty much similar I'd imagine the trace settings can be consistant for all of them
I'd rather not Live trace each one in illustrator, would take ages..
Is there a batch command for this or a recommended alternative method?
    Thank you!

Yes, Bridge can do it as well, but as of CS5 it ignores the "Ignore White" option, and another user was advised to use Illustrator. I see this as a bug that needs to be repaired in Bridge. Else, why have the command? There are some other bugs associated with this and other batch commands that need to be fixed up. AI doesn't record "Live Trace" button action (you have to go to the menu item.) And it ignores "Fit Artboard to Artwork Bounds" as well.
They really need to come up with an all-round universal solution to batch processing for the different products.

  • Stroking and filling doesn't work in paths expanded from Live Trace

I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS4. I’m a complete beginner, though I’ve done a bit of reading about the basics.
After tracing a bitmap image (of black letters on a transparent background, in pdf format) using Live Trace, expanding it, and editing the paths with the pen tool to my satisfaction, I find neither fills nor strokes appear -- I can change the fill settings or stroke settings, but the paths just stay the colour of all unfilled paths on that layer. (I’m viewing the document in preview mode.) Also, when selecting paths with either the Selection tool or the Direct Selection tool and then trying to use Live Paint, I get a notification that "the selection contains objects that cannot be converted. Live Paint groups can only contain paths and compound paths. Clipping paths are not allowed." When I go to the Object Menu, under Clipping Mask the only available option is "Make Mask", and "Release" and "Edit Mask" are greyed out, which suggests to me there are no clipping masks present.
I’ve created a separate, nearly identical document where strokes, fills and Live Paint work fine. The only difference is that when I used Live Trace on the bitmap image, for the non-working document I selected "Outlines" for the Vector section of the View options (in the Tracing Options dialogue box), and in the working one I selected "Tracing Result" instead. For both, I used the same original document settings, placed the same bitmap image, used the Live Trace preset "Black and White Logo" with all the default settings except that I checked the "Ignore White" box, and then clicked Expand.
Obviously, I know what I did wrong, though I don’t know why it made a difference. But since I spent many hours editing the paths in the screwed-up document before I realized stroking and filling wouldn’t show up, is there a way to fix it? How can I make the paths "valid" for stroking, filling, and Live Paint -- or, failing that, is there a way to somehow copy or automatically trace the shape of the paths, so I don’t have to do all that editing again?
This is kind of urgent, since I’m creating a logo for a project that needs to be finished soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I could send someone the document by e-mail if you wanted to look at it properly -- since I’m a beginner, I don’t know what I need to describe.

Never mind! I fixed it. For anyone else who has this same problem -- apparently, I’d made it so the paths were actually guides, which can look like and possess the properties of paths but which don’t show when you print. After going to View, Guides, Release Guides, the fills and strokes manifested, and the paths became "valid".

  • Live Trace Raster Preview Btn doesn't work in Ai CS5

    Hello,
I'm working with tracing graphics in Illustrator CS5 (I know, that's not the newest version of the software), I came across such a problem:
Live trace mode offers 2 preview buttons: vector (white pyramid button) and raster (black pyramid button), only vector preview button works properly - the raster button doesn't respond to clicking or even mouse hovering.
    Greetings,
    Bartek

it does if you turn off the vector preview (i.e. set it to 'No Tracing Result'/the top option).
or do you mean you don't even get a drop down menu?
edit: I mean set the vector option to something that doesn't obscure the image (outlines etc)

  • Set CS6 Live Trace Settings to CS4 Settings

    Hi everyone.
I am having a frustrating problem. When I Live Trace a hand drawn map I've made in CS4, it comes out perfectly, converting the lines I've drawn to vector perfectly, when using the default settings. However, in CS6 the default settings don't capture half of the lines and changes the way they look. I tried matching the CS4 and CS6 tracing option menus up, but there are different setting categories between the two. Can anyone help me figure out what the CS6 settings should be to match the CS4 default settings?
    Your help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

It totally depends on the nature of the image and on your expectations. Even with a simple image there are dozwns of possible settings combinations.
What I always do in these situations: turn on preview, adjust the settings and try to figure it out. There are no generally correct settings for this.
You have to decide: do you want it exact, but with more anchors and maybe a little sketchy lines? Or do you rather want smooth curves and sacrifice a little "exactness"? You have to decide this for every image you trace again and again.

  • I am using Illustrator CS5, how do I remove white outline after live trace?

I am working on a image that will be used as a sticker. I did all the painting in Photshop CS5. Now I want to create a cleaner image by making it a vector. My problem is when using Live Trace it comes out amazing. But this is in Illustrator. When i go and save it as a PDF or TIFF. It has a white line surrounding all the individual vectors.
    how do i remove these?
I already did the Ignore White. I did not use the expand button, which is what the saved image looks like when i do press expand. Thats a No NO!
All my settings are at 300 res. I also rasterized the image too. it still came out the same way.
The image on the left i how it looks in illustrator. The left image is how it looks when it is opened as a jpeg or saved as a adobe PDF or Tiff.
    Thank you,
    Trojan

    These could be
gaps due to differences in adjacent fill areas
    antialaising issues across adjacent items
    general trapping issues
I'm afraid you'll have to do some reading up on all of that and invest some time in manuall cleaning up your documents to fix these problems. Though I honestly don't see the relevance. Your image being quite detailed eitehr way it would be printed using inkjet or classical CMYK processes and beyond the die line for the cutout there would be no need to use any vector data.
