Resume Dims Screen

Hey everyone. I just iinstalled Arch yesterday and thus far I'm very impressed. I came from Fedora which I thought was absolutely fantastic, but Arch may trump that. I have a couple small issues remaining, hoping someone is able to help ..
1) This is the "major" issue. I suspend my laptop using pm-suspend. It works great. Screen blanks, I can hear the HDD winding down, etc. It resumes quickly too. However, when the screen comes back it's REALLY dim. The lowest setting possible. Normally I can use Fn and the up/down arrow keys to change brightness but these, too, don't work. I'd imagine some module is not getting reloaded on resume but I have no clue which. If I log out of X using CTRL+ALT+DEL it shuts down but it doesn't show the virtual terminal like usually. If I log in blindly and run "startx" everything comes back as normal - screen brightness and all. Thoughts?
2) Second, is anyone able to point me to a post or wiki article advising how to create a script to run when I close the laptop's lid?
Using a Dell Inspiron 1520 running OpenBox.
[ben@myhost ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

Thanks for your link. I was aware of quirks but I was hoping this was a simpler issue - edit a power setting or something. Never that easy, eh? Still, can't complain. A bit of playing around got it to work. For anyone else with Dell Inspiron 1520 suspend to ram giving you a dim screen on resume, try:
pm-suspend --quirk-vbe-post
Thanks again Reasons.

  • OSX Dims Screen based on Content

I've been noticing that my screen appeared to be dimming randomly (or at least it seemed random at first). I search the web and found tons of people complaining about the same behavior, and adjust their energy settings and ambient light settings, but none of it worked. Their Macs kept on occationally changing the screen brightness.
Idleness wasn't the issue: During my tests I was actively using the computer (and I'm plugged in)
Ambient Light: There was no change in ambient light, so it wasn't this either (and I disabled this setting and the behavior persisted).
However, what has changed is the contents of my screen. If I go to a website with really dark graphics, or go full screen on some movies, the screen brightness turns down. I can reproduce this "dimming" effect consistently... and then I found this:
    http://www.macrumors.com/2013/01/22/apple-granted-patent-on-methods-for-dimming- screens-based-on-content-needs/
Apple has a patent that allows them to dim screens based on their contents. I am certain this is what is affecting our screen brightness. This is meant to be a power saving feature according to the patent, but it is SUPER annoying. What I can't figure out is how to turn this setting off...
    Any help would be great.

  • Cannot resume, when Screen Saver is active, using TrackPoint or TouchPad

I cannot resume from Screen Saver, neither using TrackPoint, TouchPad, any UltraNav Buttons as well as an external BT mouse.
The one and only way is using  the Ctrl+Alt+Del, to resume.
How can I solve that issue?

    Hello,
may be it´s a problem with BOINC, if the problem won´t occur with windows screen saver.
May be there is an option in BOINC preferences or somewhat, that can switched on, to end
sreensaver, when using your mouse and perhaps other users of BOINC have got this problem too.

  • Help!! Extremely Dim Screen!

Recently, when I turn on my Mac, the screen goes on for maybe 1-2 seconds then goes extremely dim, almost off, I can only just barely see it, is there a way I can fix this, it just happened one night for no apperent reason, any suggestions, Thanks!!!

I'm having a similar problem on my PB G4 15". The screen is incredibly dim (I can faintly make out images but not enough to work on it -- I've had to use another machine for this post).
However, what I don't get is this: if I restart the PB, I get the greeting sign, and my destop picture comes up, and then before my desktop files appear, the screen goes dim.
Previously, I had done the infamous Icelandic "hinge repair" that I read about here, but the epoxy'd screen never really was perfect after that. And I'm using a big binder clip to hold the screen and hinge together. That's worked for over a year.
I can only use A/C power because my machine dies straightaway using its battery.
I hope this isn't too much of a pain to repair, could it be the inverter board as other similar problems that are alike would seem to suggest?
I was hoping not to have to buy another laptop for a year or two or even three, but I console myself with the fact that the new MacBook is "only" US$1000, even if the screen is only 13"
Any insight into the "dim screen problem" would be much appreciated.

  • Apple store glasgow - dim screen and tiny icons on 17"

Hi all - i wandered into the apple store in glasgow today with half an eye on the new macbook pro (unfortunately out of stock... but the display model they had out was very dim (despite being turned right up) with the onscreen icons looking very small. I questioned this and was told the problem was 'incorrect drivers' - i didn't buy this line but was wondering.... is there a problem with the new displays?
    many thanks
    dc/lockerbie/uk

The dim screen looks to simply be the characteristics of the LCD panel used in the new 17".
The small icons appear that way because the 17" uses a higher resolution than the 15", thus things appear smaller to increase the usable screen space.

  • Just had my logic board replaced, dim screen with no brightness control

My MacBook Pro 17 inch was just in for repair due to the nvidia 8600 issue (no video, Mac won't boot, etc.). I have it back as of this afternoon but when I turned it on the screen is unbelievably dim -- almost as if I have the brightness at the second-to-lowest level.
Here's the catch: when I attempt to use the brightness control, either via F1/F2 keys or in System Preferences the brightness will not change. The icon overlay shows up on the screen as if it is working but the screen brightness just doesn't work.
When I bring the brightness indicator all the way down, to the point where the screen would normally shut off, the screen stays on...but it's just the same dim screen.
    Any ideas?

Test while started in Recovery : if the problem persists, then it likely is a hardware issue.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) probably won't change anything, but you can readily do it before contacting the repairers.

  • T500 dim screen with dual monitors

We have a few T500's that are setup to use the laptop screen and a separate monitor as an extended desktop. For some reason when the laptop goes into lock screen or sleep mode there are a couple of units that when they are logged back into, the monitor on the laptop itself is very dim and the only way to get it to brighten back up is to reboot.
Does anyone have any ideas of what may cause this? I did upgrade one to Windows 7 and have not seen the issue since.
    Thanks.

Could it be that the Intel graphics control applet is applying some funky color calibration profile on resume? On my T400, it used to be that a resume would have the Intel applet overwrite Windows' calibration. Preventing some of the igfx___.exe's from starting at boot was a simple workaround.

  • Very dim screen on MacBook Pro - how to prove it?

I bought an MBP about 4 weeks ago (just before the new rev came out, so this one does not have LED backlight) and have mostly been using it connected to a 23" cinema display.
When I was using the built-in screen the other day I realised it was very dim even at full brightness, with very narrow viewing angles, dark corners, and a noticable brightness continuity down the left hand side.
Now the shop I bought it from doesn't have any 'old' MBP's to compare it to, but comparing it to my 4 year old Thinkpad it's clearly substandard, and to my eyes it's bad enough to be defective. The shop on the other hand say it's 'normal' but suggested take it to an apple service center to get it tested.
So, does anyone know what the actual specs for light output (lumens) of a CCFL-backlight MBP are? If I don't have that number, how can I best persuade Apple that this screen is defective, and not get fobbed off with unprovable claims that it's 'normal'?
    Many thanks for any advice.

  • IPod touch 3rd generation has dim screen and no touch screen response. I've replaced the digitizer and the screen. I've also reset it and did a complete restore still nothing. Is there any way to fix this myself? Does it just need a new memory board?

My 3rd gen iPod touch has a very dim/dark screen and no screen response. I've restored it, still nothing, put a new screen and digitizer and still nothing. I've reset it a 1000 times and nothing works. Is there a way to fix this? It previously had "activation required" on the screen but now it just says "ipod" what do I do now?

Could be due to many things. You could have damaged something during the screen replacement. I would take it to someone with more experience.

  • Ipod nano dim screen?

Okay, I had a 4th generation iPod nano for about two years, and then I got the fourth generation iPod touch. My brother had the iPod nano after me, but he left it in his pocket on accident and it went through the washer. I did the whole rice for 24 hours thing, but the iPod died while it was in the bowl of rice, and when I took it out, I thought that it was broken, so I just shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it. I found it in a drawer a couple of days ago and for some reason it had a little battery and it was clicking and the screen was REALLY DIM. I screwed around with it for awhile and charged it and stuff, and the backlight would come in and out. If I left it sitting there for awhile, it would be fully lit for like 30 minutes, and then go out again. This morning the screen stopped working completely, and it was still really really dim. I was able to sync it and restore it and I've tried rebooting it, to no avail. It plays music and video perfectly fine, everything works GREAT, except for the screen. The screen brightened up for a couple of seconds when it was recognized by the computer but I touched the click wheel and it dimmed again.
If I took it to the Apple store, would they still fix it, even if it IS from a couple of years ago? If so, how much would it cost? Thanks ahead of time.

I would recommend taking it in to your local Apple Store to see what the people at the Genius Bar can do for you.

  • IPhone 4 not dimming screen while on a call

I've recently restored my mom's iPhone as a new one. I then put on a Lifeproof case because my step-dad was going to use it. I've tested the Phone app to see if it works. The problem is that while you're on the call, the screen will not dim. I don't know if the Lifeproof case is causing the problem, or something else. Before I restored it, it was working fine. Please help and thanks!

Remove the case, if the proximity sensor starts working again then then issue is the case.

  • Y2P dim screen, caps lock indicator stuck on. Already disabled adaptive brighness... Warranty?

Hi guys. Recently bought my second Y2P, this one second hand.
Reason being my previous one was the 4GB i5 model, this one is the 8GB i7
Now I've noticed a few things when I compare them. Firstly, and most annoyingly, the screen on this one is significantly dimmer than on my previous one. When I put it it max brightness it's only a little brighter than half way on my older one. When I put the brightness all the way down the screen turns off...
I''ve already disabled auto dim in the battery settings, windows setting AND intel graphics control panel so I'm sure it's not down to that. I'm running the updated BIOS on both the systems also. This is unbelievably frustrating.
Another annoying thing is that the CAPS lock indicator light is always on. Apart from when I press a button, it turns off whilst anything is being pressed (on the keyboard). It does this as soon as the machine is switched on.
BIOS setting have been reverted to standard etc and nothing seems to be fixing any of it. I have also done a full reset of the machine on numerous occasions. Nothing.
One last niggle is that I've noticed that the touchpad is ever so slightly sunk in (something that I probably only noticed because I have another yoga to compare it to) and there is some play in the touchpad which I would have noticed this regardless.
Is it time to contact Lenovo warranty team?
Sorry for the long post, and I'd really appreciate any advice!

Just to keep the thread updated in case by any chance someone has similar problems...
I've contacted Lenovo who are saying it's likely a motherboard issue, I'll be getting a letter with details of how to arrange a courier to collect the system within the next few days. I'll let y'all know what comes of it!

  • 10.4.8- dimmed screen & wireless won't work

I downloaded the latest Mac update 10.4.8 and ever since my screen looks dim or darker. Not as bright and vibrant as it used to. I have read other posts of it looking blueish. I bet this is the same thing others are describing.
In addition, my wireless mouse and keyboard quit working. Anyone heard of any easy way to fix this or do should I wait for an update? (I am new to Macs.)
I have an iMac. Thanks for any suggestions.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.8GHzPowerPC G5 512MB DDR SDRAM

sorry your going through this as a new mac user. I've been using mac's now for about 20 years and 10.4.8 is the first really bad and IMHO defective update they've ever released. Just sit tight as Apple is great at addressing these issues and with all the posts here I'm sure they're working to resolve the problems.
As for the wireless, my problem was fixed by clicking on "Use Interference Robustness" in the drag down window, upper right hand corner where the 5 bars are to show airport signal strength.
Also search for info on 'preferred networks' here. That modification in network preferences helps as well.
As for the darker screen. Can't help you with that one.
