Resume from suspend not working anymore

Hello,
until a couple of months suspending and resuming on my system worked flawlessly. Then something happend (I can't remember what I did - system update or a new package most probably) and I didn't have time then to trace.
I'm running 64-bit archlinux on a SandyBridge i3 processor with onboard graphics and using Gnome3.
As I was trying to gather some information I found that actually sudo pm-suspend works (when suspending and resuming from a virtual console). When I try to get back to Gnome with Alt + F7 or sudo gdm (if gnome was not running) the system hangs and I must force shutdown with the power button.
As I am out of ideas and I don't have any experience at tracking errors, can anyone suggest what should I do next?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your quick reply!!
1) I didn't find anything weird in dmesg.log (or I don't know what to look for)

  • Pc doesn't resume from suspend to ram anymore (new 3.4.2 kernel)

    hi.
I was using nouveau without problem and with the little trick of using acpi_os_name="Microsoft Windows NT" kernel parameter, I was able to suspend to ram from gnome, and resume the pc without problem
Not anymore. Now, if I suspend to ram, the pc does not resume. It correctly wake up the dvd drive, the hard-drive, began to read stuff on the hdd but the led of the power button stays blinking and the screen is not waken up.
I am thinking this is due to the update of nouveau and a new regression but this seems related to the bios or hardware. For example. If after the broken resume, I hold down 10 seconds the power button to power off, and press it again to power on, the led is still blinking and it does not boot. I need to power off by removing the power cord.
Is it because I run (to test it) the nvida-173xx, and that did something to the graphic card ?
Did anyone got similar problem with the new nouveau driver ?
I tried to downgrade libgl, libdrm, libdrm-nouveau, nouveau-dri, xf86-video-nouveau and mesa but I still got the problem. so ?
I have a geforce 8300 GS. the pc is an inspiron 531

Probably I have the same issue with geforce GTS250.
After upgrading to kernel 3.4.2 or so, my system doesn't resume from suspend, only black screen and cannot switch to other ttys.
I first thought this problem be caused by the kernel, but downgrading nvidia to 295.53-2 solved this problem on kernel 3.4.3 so this likely is caused by nvidia 302.17.
In my case there is something like error in pm-suspend.log when resume failed:
Fri Jun 22 05:36:12 JST: Awake.
Fri Jun 22 05:36:12 JST: Running hooks for resume
    Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video resume suspend:

    Running hook /etc/pm/sleep.d/90alsa resume suspend:

And curiously, if I had launched vlc media player before suspend, resume worked well even on nvidia 302.17.

  • [Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t] Waking up from suspend not working properly

    Hi,
I'm having some issues with getting suspend to work on my S10-3t. I tried pm-utils and the s2ram script (with about any combination of options as my machine is not on the whitelist) and always get the same behaviour: Suspending seems to succeed but waking up takes about 5 minutes.
I tried using pm-suspend under ubuntu 10.10, works flawlessly out of the box, so it *can* be done.. somehow.
Apparently this was a kernel related issue in older versions of ubuntu too, I couldn't quite figure out how they fixed it though (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/598664).
I tailed the pm-suspend.log and kernel.log through one suspend/wake up cycle, here's the output:

I have been trying to resolve the issue of suspend failing to resume on me Lenovo s10-3 (not the touch screen) for what seems an aeon.
A profound thank you to you all.
    hpet=disable highres=off nohz=off
    Works!
I now have no indication lights showing when the machine is suspended? But finally I can close the lid and reopen to resume - fantastic, this machine may finally see some more use.
I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) running Gnome 3 with 3 series kernels (presently liquorix 3.4.0-4.dmz.1-liquorix-686)

  • Suspend not working anymore after Kernel Update

    Hello,
since I updated from 3.1.5 to 3.1.7 this morning the suspend functionality of my laptop does not seem to work anymore. I am using this command to suspend:
    echo "mem" > /sys/power/state
After the laptop did something, the screen switches to the console with just one single white pointer. Then it is stuck and I have to switch off the power cable...
However, by using the most recent mainline kernel (3.1.7) in Ubuntu, the suspend function works perfectly there.

    type hw
    Remove your ill-advised /etc/asound.conf - it's bypassing dmix.
To make the correct soundcard the default, there's various methods - google it.

  • No sound in Flash after resuming from suspend

After I resume from a suspend or sleep there is no sound in Flash and there is no networking.
The only way is to restart my browser to reestablish the sound.
Is there a solution for this problem?
    Thanks.

This does not happen with Firefox in Ubuntu, as an example. So something must be wrong somewhere.
I can confirm this happens to me in Arch with Firefox 4.0b7 and Chromium 7.0.517.44. I noticed that after resuming from suspend, not only sound (in Flash) is missing, but Flash is behaving weirdly (YouTube video plays much faster) and CPU usage goes crazy without doing any particular action.

  • Touchpad permanently not working after resuming from suspend

I lost touchpad and trackpoint functionality after resuming from suspend on my ThinkPad E530 (3259CTO).
Even after a complete power off (with the battery removed), the touchpad is detected but doesn't send any event, and the trackpoint is not detected.
In Windows, in the UltraNav control panel, the touchpad is marked as enabled and cannot be disabled, the trackpoint is grayed.
In Linux, I can see the difference is kernel traces when the driver is loaded.
    Before : psmouse serio1: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 8.0, id: 0x1e2b1, caps: 0xd001a3/0x940300/0x120c00
    Now    : psmouse serio1: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 8.0, id: 0x1e2b1, caps: 0xd001a3/0x0/0x0
After looking at https://gerrit.chromium.org/gerrit/#/c/31105/ and Synaptics public documentation, I was able to get more information : the device status register (F01_RMI_Data0) is 0x45, which means the touchpad is in flash programming mode since there is a firmware CRC failure.
It looks like http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=24298, so it's probably not a Lenovo specific problem, but a bug in Synaptics firmware.
Can Lenovo provide the firmware to flash like http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-Touchpad-jumpy-response-when-used-with-90... which would hopefully make my touchpad working again ?
The original firmware should work, but an updated one would be better, if it avoids losing the touchpad again later.

I don't know why, but this made me think of the episode of the simpsons when home tries to get over 300 pounds so he can work from home.  When he tries to dial the phone he hist all the buttons and gets a recording that says "We're sorry, you're fingers are too fat. To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad now."
BTW, sorry I can't help... but at least I am entertained easily.

  • [SOLVED] Sound (snd_hda_intel) not working after resume from suspend

Using the latest kernel 2.6.30.4, On HP2133, whenever I get back from resume, sound is not working.
Running the following brings back the sound, but that is obviously a hack:
    fuser -k /dev/snd/*
    rmmod snd_hda_intel
    modprobe snd_hda_intel
    /etc/rc.d/alsa start
    I have on my /etc/modprobe/50-sound.conf:
    options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    Here's the exact hardware specification:
    # lspci -nnv|grep Audio
80:01.0 Audio device [0403]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) [1106:3288] (rev 10)
Any idea where to look for this?

    [SOLVED]
I downgraded to kernel 2.6.29 and the problem is gone.
Note: I also had X VT problems with 2.6.30.4 (xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call). Those were solved too by downgrading to 2.6.29.

  • Laptop screen not getting locked on close lid or resume from suspend

I am using kde 4.4 rc2 atm. My laptop screen is not getting locked when I closed the lid or when laptop resumes from a suspend to ram.
It used to work correctly before I installed acpid(before that I just had the acpi client package installed.) Power Devil used to handle everything correctly.
The power devil settings already says, Lock screen on resume and I have added Lock screen as action for Lid close for performance profile.
Is there any way to fix this. I want to make laptop screen lock when I do lid close or resume from suspend/hibernate.

Suspend has always been problematic under Linux. It seems to be hit or miss for the most part, but here are some things you can try:
Use an LTS kernel, tuxonice, pm-utils, etc. See Suspend and Hibernate
    Try a different graphics driver
Tweak the driver module parameters or build your own driver.
Unfortunately I don't have experience with the radeon driver, so I can only give you ideas.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot resume from suspend but hibernate works fine

Please help me figuring out what can be the issues..
I cannot resume from suspend while "sudo pm-hibernate" works fine..
When I use "sudo pm-suspend", the system (samsung N210 netbook) goes to sleep and I can see the power light blinking as expected. But, when I try to resume the system from suspend by pressing the power button, the screen remains black with no HDD activity. Only thing I can see is the power LED on.
After I do "sudo pm-suspend" and try to resume from suspend but fails. So, I do a HARD reboot and then this is the content of  /var/log/pm-suspend.log

Thu Dec 16 12:00:31 IST 2010: performing suspend
Since, the last time I checked about suspend was 1.5 months back, I cant really make out as to what package caused the issue as I had a few upgrades since that time.
I am no expert but it seems like it is the log of suspending the system, it seems like the system didnt even go to initial stage of resuming.

Well this is a long shot... But my laptop had some issues with suspending due to low-power governors preventing it from fully working at times.
Because of that I manually suspend with the following script:
    #!/bin/bash
    clear
    cpufreq-set -g performance
    cpufreq-info
    echo "Continue? y/n? ";read bevestiging
    if [ $bevestiging = "y" ]
    then
echo "System going down for suspension NOW!"
    pm-suspend
    else
    echo "Exiting..."
    exit 0
    fi
    exit 0
All it really does in the end, is change the governer from which it's currently on to "performance", thus allowing maximum clock speed.
I've also added in a little confirmation dialog to check whether it's properly switched.
Of course, this will only work for you if you're also using laptop-mode and cpufrequtils.
Edit: You need to run this script with sudo or as the root user.

  • Dell Inspiron 7537 - Sound only works after resuming from suspend

    Hello,
So my sound does not work after boot, only once I resume from suspend. So, once I turn on my computer, and I load sound, nothing work (everything is unmuted in Alsa) - then if I suspend my computer and resume - the sound works every time.
I use Alsa and here is my amixer output (before and after suspend is the same) :
    eric@archlinux ~> amixer
    Simple mixer control 'Master',0
    Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
    Limits: Playback 0 - 65536
    Mono:
Front Left: Playback 5358 [8%] [off]
Front Right: Playback 5358 [8%] [off]
    Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
    Capabilities: cvolume cswitch cswitch-joined
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
    Limits: Capture 0 - 65536
Front Left: Capture 11003 [17%] [on]
Front Right: Capture 11003 [17%] [on]
What gets rebooted when I do a suspend, but not when I reboot? Does not seem to make sense to me.
    Thanks.

Is there any additional information I can include to help figure this out?

I have recently upgraded from my iphone 5 to a new phone. My iphone 5 's touch screen does not work anymore. I need to backup my phone, but I can't do it on itunes without my password. Everything besides the screen is completely fine-the screen will not recognize my finger anymore. I am not trying to fix the phone, but I need to have my contacts. The pictures have already synced, but I need my password to do a full backup. Unfortunately, I can't type in my password. Is there any way around it? If I take my phone to the apple store, will they be able to help me? I am not willing to replace the screen just to do this, however, so that is out of the question.

Someone else may have a workaround, but, as far as I know, if you cannot interact with the screen on the iPhone, there is no way to unlock it so you can get to your contacts.
Were you saving them to iCloud by chance? If so, you can restore them to your new phone.

No Japanese carrier provides unlocking services. Therefore, your phone must have been hacked to unlock it. That hack was removed when you updated the software. You need to be a legitimately unlocked phone.
    Best of luck.

Hi there, I have a problem with my iPod Classic (from 2009). Everytime I connect it to my computer (Windows), iTunes does not work anymore. Music is automatically deleted on my iPod. Any suggestions please?

Thanks, for info, iPod Classic is a slower machine compared the Nano, unfortunately, if you read these discussions, majority of the freezes involved iTunes 10. Although if might be just slow and some impatient user just disconnect the iPod ands cause more problems. ( Yes I also did that but safely by doing a iPod Hard Reset, before disconnecting).
Here is the Apple support article that may help you.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
or my usual solution for Windows Users.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC, do not use any USB Hub.
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
    Good Luck!
