Retail Tiger Installer disk unrecognized by 1 Ghz Emac

Hi. I am trying to install a retail version of OSX Tiger onto a Emac 1 Ghz Power PC G4, osx version 10.3.9.
My problem is that while my superdrive reads other dvds and audio cds, it does not recognize the installer disk at all. Once injected, the computer slowly scans the disk and it appears that it reads little to nothing. The disk icon never appears on the screen. I have recently repaired disk permissions and used diskwarrior's manual diagnostics test on the hard drive.
Any Ideas?

Are you refering to the Tiger Install disc in the singular? Tiger comes on a DVD, not CD, unless you can call Appl Store and talk them into letting you use the CD exchange program that expired a while back to exchange the DVD for a set of CDs. Are you sure you have a Combo or Super drive that can read DVDs? Some early Mac models (your profile shows 10.2.x) came with CD-RW drives that don't read DVDs. You can check in the Hardware section of Apple System Profiler if your optical drive will work with DVDs. Will you Mac recognize other DVDs?

  • Why can't I open my retail Tiger installation dvd although it boots

    Hi,
I have problems with opening my original Tiger installation dvd. I already installed Tiger, but I need some data from the optional installs on the disk. But I don't get any access to the dvd. Its shown on the desk but whenever I try to open it it just failed. I can boot it by pushing C and starting from the dvd but I have no access when I just put it into my internal diskdrive. Does anyone have an idea?

  • MiniMac won't startup from installer disks

I've got a miniMac 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB, currently running OS X 10.4.11. Permissions have been repaired, but Disk Utility reports a problem (Invalid Record Count, The underlying task reported failure on exit). But I can't get the Mac to start up from ANY of 3 different installation disks while holding down the "C" key. One of the disks (10.4.2) is a grey one that probably did not come with this miniMac, but it also won't start up with a black Tiger installation disk (10.4.6), nor from a white Snow Leopard upgrade disk. None of the disks show up in the Set Startup Disk window either. Yet they all appear normally on the desktop and I can access the files on them okay.
And, in further testing, I now find that I am unable to reset the NVRAM on this computer (holding down option-command-P-R). The computer restarts, beeping only once, as though the keys were never depressed. And trying to start up in the Startup Manager (holding down Option) also fails, as does trying to run an Apple Hardware Test (holding down D). It's as though there are no keyboard inputs...except I can type on the keyboard without difficulty. (We were using a wireless keyboard and mouse on this computer, but I've removed them and their wireless transmitters from the system and connected standard Apple-issued keyboard and mouse for the purposes of testing.)
    Any suggestions?

I located two additional installer disks, both clearly labeled for use with miniMacs. One is a 10.3.7, the other 10.5.6, but neither of them would mount as a startup either. And now there's a bigger problem -- when I tried the 10.5.6 disk, it did LOOK like it was running as a startup disk (got the language selector), but it would not allow repairs to the hard disk, only verification (Repair button was grayed out). And now, when I try to restart, the Mac gets as far as the Apple logo, spins the daisy a bit, then shuts down. The installer disk is still in the Mac and I can't eject it, and can't start the Mac up at all.
And no, holding down the "T" key doesn't do anything (but I do have an iMac running Snow Leopard and connected via Airport).

  • Tiger DVD disk cause kernel panic when booting on a new G5

I was trying to boot a fairly new G5 system, less than 4 months old, using a retail copy of the 10.4 DVD installation disk. The computer could mount the disk and I can see its contents, but when I booted from it using the C key, I get a kernel panic.
I tried booting from the DVD on an older G5, and it worked without any problems. Assuming that it is not a DVD drive issue, do I need to get an update for the retail Tiger DVD disk to boot newer G5s?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can generally only use newer retail disks than the disks which came with the computer to boot and install operating systems, as well as those which came with the computer to boot and install operating systems. If you are missing the disks which came with your computer, call AppleCare to ask for a replacement.
    This article explains that:

As for installing operating system updates to your existing system, look here for updates:

And if you are on dialup, some authorized service centers may let you bring in a CD to burn the updates. Check with the ones in your area.

  • Cannot reboot Mac OS X even with installation disk

    Hi,
After I struggled with the OpenDirectory setup - making the system
as standalone OpenDirectory server, I reboot my MacPro expecting
better behavior (I have FTP problem which I don't understand).
Then the machine never boots up - even with Tiger Installation
    Disk in the DVD slot.
I'm new to Mac Server operation/management - any idea how to
    recover it ?

  • Tiger Installation not working

    Hi All
I have a bit of a weird one. I am fixing an iBook G4 for a friend, whose hard drive packed up. I have fitted a new Hitachi Deskstar and all went in great until mac tries to boot up, here are the steps I took..
    1. Erased and named disk fine. One partition.
    2. Checked S.M.A.R.T. status, which says verified.
    3. Started up using a full retail Tiger DVD disk (10.4)
    4. Installed system, with no reported problems.
    5. Comes to reboot, and get to blue screen.. STOP
I can mount the drive via target disk, I and install from there too. I have booted in verbose mode, and gets to login and then goes blue screen, but cant gleen anything from that and also cant boot into safe mode. Have read here about waiting for login window I have also left the ibook for 20mins with nothing happening. I have also read about blessing systems, but would have thought this would have done this on install. When I come to restart mac via forced power off I can't get it to do anything and have to start from wiped drive again. I can boot into single user mode no problem and mount / r/w so can make cli changes..
I am at a loss now on how to get it running. I am assuming the drive is ok and it install is ok, but I do not have original disk(s) to check this.
Any advice ideas would be greatfully accepted.

  • My somewhat bizarre Tiger installation experience

I decided it was time to upgrade my wife's 15" Powerbook G4 from 10.3.9 to Tiger, so I sat down this morning to start the process. I inserted Install Disk 1 and rebooted per the instructions.
The process started as expected, with the installation dialog opening. I went through and answered all of the questions up to selecting which drive to install on. At that point, the message came up telling me it was checking the installation media. It looked like it would be a slow process, so I left the room for a bit.
When I returned, I noticed that Install Disk 1 had been ejected, and the screen was showing the gray Apple logo reboot screen, with the rotating thingy under the Apple logo. Huh? I thought I was going to be asked what kind of installation and maybe one or two more questions. Could the media be bad? Did it reboot? Was it looking for the next Install disk? I had no idea.
So I just tried something...I inserted Install Disk 2. After a few minutes of the drive spinning and sounding active, it eventually spit that one out, too. So I did it again with Install Disk 3. Same thing, so what the heck, I put in Disk 4. Every time, the drive sounded active, like it was actively reading it, for a good amount of time.
Eventually Disk 4 was ejected, but after that I had no idea what to do. The screen was still showing the gray Apple logo with the spinning thingy. What to do now? Nothing else was happening...no hard drive noise, nothing. I put Install Disk 1 back in for the heck of it. Nothing this time. Silence, and a continuously spinning thingy.
After a long while of this, I had no idea what to think or what to do. So, knowing that I had a backup of her data available, I did the manly thing and held the power button down until it shut off, and then I rebooted. I had no idea what to expect.
Well, after some time to think to itself, the Powerbook rebooted just fine, and the 10.4 Setup Assistant appeared as expected. "About This Mac" says 10.4 is installed, and everything seems to be working as it should as far as I can tell.
Huh? I've installed Mac OS's, including Tiger, many times and I've never come across anything like this before. I've searched around but haven't seen other experiences like this. What do people think? Anything else I should do to make sure it installed everything correctly?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I realize I don't need CDs, I'm just telling you this is what the University gave me. And yes, I paid the academic discount price you mentioned.
These are, in fact, "proper" Tiger installation disks. In case you don't buy that, here's a pic of Install Disk 1:
    http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8449/installdisksw6.jpg
And yes, there are three more labelled Disks 2-4.
I did not state that when I returned, the whole process was completed. I stated that, when I returned, Install Disk 1 had been ejected, and the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning thingy were displayed. I waited half an hour before deciding that something was probably not right, so that's when I tried inserting the remaining Install Disks.
It may very well be that the remaining Install Disks weren't required and the whole process really was finished and it only needed Install Disk 1. But it sure seemed like the others were needed -- the CD drive spun and clicked like it was reading continuously for 10 minutes until it spit the disk out again. Same goes for the other disks. And in the end, it never did reboot, it just hung on the same screen.
The process is a mystery to me, and apparently to you too. I'm looking to see if anyone has had similar experiences or any tidbit of advice, which I still maintain is a perfectly good question to ask on the Apple Support forums. Your advice is to start from scratch again and use a "proper" DVD. I got it, and thanks for the advice.

  • Tiger 10.4 "retail" or "installer" for upgrade?

Have a shiny new iMac with Tiger, want to add Tiger to Powerbook G4 (10.3.9). Do I need to buy a full, new, retail version of Tiger (waiting a while before tackling Leopard), or can I use an installer CD/DVD say that I buy off of ebay? Or even a "used" retail?
I ask because there are of course lots of disks on ebay and other sites, not sure if they'd be of any help to me or no since, according to the licensing agreements, those disks are all for only one machine.?? Am sure I am overthinking this, making it too hard, just need to know.
Considering a target disk mode install of Tiger (firewire from iMac to PB using those installer disks), but want alternatives. Thanks in advance.

Forget to post, I understand I need an OS build for an older machine, not an Intel-based computer. Just want to make sure I get the proper version of Tiger to successfully update the Powerbook. Thanks.

  • Running Mavericks on an iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, I've been trying to install Adobe CS3. All components install except InDesign. Is this an installation disk problem or is it not compatible with the OS?

Running Mavericks on an iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, I've been trying to install Adobe CS3 Design Premium. All components install except InDesign. Is this an installation disk problem, or is there a compatibility problem with the OS?

I fear that you are trying to download OLDER Software on a newer Operating Sysytem Meaning that you need to Install the Latest Version of Adobe on the Newer Operating System for it to work Properly. Be sure to always check the minimum System Requirements.

  • Cannot reinstall Tiger : installer stuck (cannot make disk bootable)

    Good afternoon experts,
I am writing to you here as I have a problem with the Tiger installer which suddendly stops when trying to install on a prepartioned disk.
First, some background information : I have a 20' iMac Intel machine which I bought on February 06 (well designed machine, happy with it so far). The thing is, I have had serious crashes and lockups using the UB version of VLC (media player) which led me to hard reboot the machine several times. Despite the journaling on the disk, some of my filesystem was corrupted, seemingly beyond repair (some apps did not even boot, nothing happened when I plugged in an external disk, etc). Scanning for disk errors and permissions problems revealed that a lot of files had been damaged ("extended allocation" error) in both the system and in my applications.
As I did not know what to do (I should have asked first here whether it was possible to reinstall only parts of the OS using, maybe, a package manager), I synced my backups and went for a reinstall.
The thing is, the disk is already partitioned, as I also run Linux on the machine (updated firmware and repartitioned the disk w/ BootCamp; worked well). It contains, in that order : the hidden EFI partition (fat32), the macOSX HFS+ volume (where I want to install), Linux swap partition, HFS+ partition (for use w/ rEFIt, the EFI bootloader), and two Linux ext3 partitions.
The install starts fine (booting from the DVD which came with my machine), the macOSX volume is formatted but the installer just then stops. Looking at the logs, I can see that it is because it cannot make the volume bootable (this is what the error message says). Note that it correctly read the partition table/EFI partition scheme as it gives me the correct partition types I have presented above. Also note that I cannot do an "archive and install" procedure, seemingly because I have insufficient space (6GB free on the volume); the installer does not give me any choice. Finally, I can still boot into Linux holding the 'Alt' key and using the builtin volume chooser to start on the second HFS+ volume.
I am asking for help to you gurus, to know what to do here. I was think maybe something like using the shell to do a manual 'bless' would solve the issue; I would like however to be sure before proceeding. Otherwise, is there a manual installation procedure (as there is for instance on the Debian installer, allowing to skip/redo some install steps)?
    Thanks for your help experts,
    Vincent
PS: I am going to see whether I can collect the logs and post them here.

  • Multiple Tiger Installations?

I just can't get my head around this one and would love some feedback from the group.
I know in the beginning that it was impossible to install Tiger without plastic media and taking over your whole system with the install. I'm wondering if that has changed and if someone has come up with a reliable way to install it on various computers without having to individually boot each computer off of the DVD. I often need to install clean systems on external drives and just have not been able to find a time efficient way to do this. Are there any techies out there with a good plan for this? It's especially time consuming because of all of the updates that have to be reinstalled while booted off the new disk. I know there must be a better way, right?
    Constructive comments very much appreciated!
    much obliged,
    Mick

You can get family and site license plans for
    multiple machines.
Yes, of course you're right, but this is not at issue. All the machines have their own Tiger Disks and license.
Note the retail installer disks only support PowerPC
    Macs.
Right, good to note. I wasn't sure if they had updated those with a Universal version or not. Interesting choice by Apple not to...
want to save time and have the license to do so,
you can always make a system clone with one of the
    cloning software on my FAQ:
Yes, I love SuperDuper! and clone all the time for various reasons. ShirtPocket and Dave are the absolute ideal ambassadors for everything that is right about shareware today. I cannot recommend the purchase of this software often enough.
But here's my really big question: Is it possible to build a PPC clone that will run PowerBooks, PPC iMacs and G5 PowerMacs? I know there are driver specific issues and so forth, but where do they lie? In other words, how many clean systems could one build to make it work? Would you only need 2? One for laptops, one for Desktops? Would you need 4, for each line of each? Or does it get worse than that?
I'm still just trying to design a more time efficient way of helping my clients without having to bill them for all of my time during these drive wipe and clean installs. Obviously, if I could have each of their systems in my shop, I could do it that way, but I'm hoping that I can get them into cloning for back ups and building clean systems on external drives for them while they still get to use their existing system.
If I use one of my laptops to boot off of build a system for G5 PowerMac will the clone end up with Powerbook specific drivers? I wouldn't have this dilemma if I could still use my desktop while the clean system build was going on.
Just wondering if there is a way around all of this...
Note Macs can only take the installer disks which
came with them or newer retail disks when it comes to
operating systems. You try and install an iMac G5's
operating system on an iMac G4 or vice versa, it may
not necessarily work. Even with an iMac G5 1.8 Ghz
    and 2.1 Ghz.
This is what I don't fully grok. I've built systems from the Tiger Install DVD (commercial box version) and they've all been just fine because they've usually been booted off of the system they were going to be used for, even if they were install onto an external firewire disk. So far, no misses, but (as you've noted above) it's bound to fail at some point when there are driver issues.
So how is it done? Are we eventually talking about an installation over a network?... I'm brain dead these days and just can't think creatively about it all.
Thanks for the ideas and possible solutions.
    cheers,
    Mick

  • Replaced hard drive - now I get kernel panic when I load installation disk

    Hi all,
I just replaced a dead hard drive on my Powerbook G4. The Apple Hardware Test says everything is fine. When I put in the installation disk that came with my laptop (OS 10.2.3) and hold down the "C" key I just get the polite suggestion in several languages that I reboot--from surfing the boards I think this is called a Kernel Panic (?). If I don't hold down the C key the computer just crashes. It is possible that my installation disk is bad--was accidently stored in the attic for a couple of years and I only went to look for it after my hard drive died. However, the AHT disk was also stored up there and it worked just fine. I have the phone number for Apple to call about replacement disks, if no one thinks I've overlooked some other possible cause.
    Thanks,
    Lori

    Lori:
I am glad you were able to boot from your co-worker's disk. As you noted, that isolates the issue as being a faulty install disk.
It looks like I'll be purchasing 10.4.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail Version of Tiger. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales 1-800-692-7753.
You can find the Full Retail Version of Tiger, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac Retail $159; CDs $179, HardcoreMac Retail $199, CDs $249, AllMac Retail $149, CDs $179, etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get Tiger on eBay.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Trying to reinstall os x tiger from purchased Tiger DVD Disk

When I boot my PB G4 from the Tiger 10.4 installation disk I get a set up screen indicating that I need to put batteries in a bluetooth mouse???.
The powerbook does have a built in trackpad, and I do not have a BT mouse nearby. I have not figured out how to get past this interruption, any suggestions? thanks. I want to run disk utilities from this disk.
    PBg4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

That explains why it can't boot from the retail disk:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    * Most Macs can only boot from a newer operating system than they came with and the restore disks which came with them.
    * The only exception I'm aware of are Mac OS 9 bootable machines which came with Mac OS X. And these aren't true exceptions. They will not boot an older version of Mac OS 9 than came with them, and they will not boot an older version of Mac OS X than came with them. An example is the iMac G4 800 Mhz with Superdrive which won't boot 9.2.1, nor will it boot 10.0 through 10.1.1, but will boot 9.2.2, and 10.1.2 or later if it shipped with 10.1.2.

  • Is this true about installation disks??

Is it true that certian OS cd's can only be loaded onto certain Mac's? Ex. Like a installation disk from a emac wont work on a powermac? What do the codes on the disks mean when it says "disk 1" and "disk 2" etc? I aquired a 2002 powermac G4 quicksilver and need to reinstall but dont have the disks. How will I be able to tell which installation disks to buy If i'm looking to install Tiger??
    -Thanks for your help

    funylinks2004, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521

  • Need another installation disk

    Dear Fellow Mac users,
I cannot find the installation disk that came with my MBP. Unfortunately my HD is corrupt and requires repair. I cannot proceed to repair it without an installation disk that came with my MBP.
I need answers to the following questions:
Can I create an installation disk using a DVD from my MBP?
If yes, then how do I do it?
If no, then how do I get another installation disk?

The DVDs that came with your computer have got a special Mac OS X version that can only be used with your computer.
You have a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro that originally came with Mac OS X Leopard. As you upgraded to Snow Leopard, you can use the Snow Leopard DVD to reinstall OS X. If your computer already came with Snow Leopard, you can use the Snow Leopard retail DVD > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If you want the second OS X DVD too, call Apple to get replacement discs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will send you the DVDs that came with the Mac
