Retail vs Educational version

OK guys, my free trial is almost up, and despite my inadequate hardware I definately am going to buy Aperture ( new MBP coming soon!). I have the opportunity to purchase an educational version due to family at university but...I think I read that the ed version does not benefit from free upgrades. Is this true or did I just imagine it? Is the ed version identical in every way to the retail?

You are using the word "upgrades" where you should be
using the word "updates."
All software Apple makes is allowed free UPDATES, but
the educational version of Aperture does not permit
discounted UPGRADES.
That being said, buying TWO versions at the
educational discount comes to the same amount as
buying one full version. A full version currently
costs $300 USD. Upgrades tend to run around 50% the
cost of the full version, if not a bit less or more,
so for argument's sake lets say an upgrade to 2.0
will cost $150 USD. By that math, Aperture 2.0 will
cost a total of $450 USD. Or, you could buy the
educational for $150 USD, and then get 2.0
educational for $150 USD and spend a total of $300
USD for the same exact software.
Food for thought...
You are indeed correct about our use of update vs upgrade, and while I feel we are all sure of the meanings it seems Apple themselves are not I quote from their Aperture web-site:
"Free Aperture 1.5 Update: All current owners of Aperture will automatically receive the free upgrade to Aperture 1.5 via Software Update." Oh well.
On the maths side you are not correct however for the UK. As always we get to pay more for the same in the UK, and whilst your 2 for 1 analogy is I'm sure correct for you guys Stateside, in the UK the retail version costs £219, however the Academic version costs £ 138.65, or about 63% of the retail version. Clearly 2 copies of the Academic version in the UK is not such a good deal.
Looks like a retail version for me!
Thanks

  • How can I tell if I have an educational version?

I bought Lightroom V1 a couple of years ago, it may or may not have been an educational version at the time. I still have the disks & serial number, but don't have the original box any more.
Anyway, I have since upgraded my camera to a Canon EOS 50D whose raw files aren't supported under v1.4, so I would like to upgrade my version of Lightroom. However, the way I read the small print is that I shouldn't be able to upgrade an educational version. I don't want to spend the money buying an upgrade version if it won't upgrade, and I would prefer to wait until V3 comes out if I need to buy a full version.
Is there any way I can tell if I the version I have is an education version.

Another option would be to download the stand-alone DNG converter. It should be able to recognize your RAW files and convert them to DNG, which you could then (I believe) import into v1.4.  I say "believe" because I think there was a DNG version upgrade recently, but I think it was backwards compatible so LR v1.4 would recognize the newer DNG.
    Give it a try.
Just offering that as an alternative to upgrading.
BTW, I think you're right about upgrading an educational version. But my experience has been that the educational price for a new version is about the same price as the retail price for the "upgrade" version.

  • FCP crossgrade from educational version one more question

I just recieved my new MacBook Pro! I see that I need to upgrade my Educational version of FCP 4.5 HD to 5.1 along with the whole acedemic studio in oder to use it/ them on my new intel based computer. I also see that I should be able to upgrade/ cross grade from my Educational version. On the PDF instructions for the upgrade they list a number after Final Cut Pro Academic HD (M9153LL/B). My question is what does that number refer to, do I need that number printed on my install disk in order to upgrade? I have a different number printed on my install disc.
    Mike

The number they're referring to is the retail part number for the software. As far as I know, its printed on the box the software was packaged in - probably also on your original invoice.

  • For upgrading - do i have education version or otherwise - how do i tell?

for the purposes of moving up to logic 8, im aware of the supposed non-upgradability of the education version of pro7 (or at least the version that would be purchased using that discount). however, i purchased my copy using the higher education discount. the sticker attached to the documentation that came with it says 'retail' on it. so can i upgrade this copy to 8 or not?
    thanks for your replies.

Two very easy ways to tell. The bottom of the dongle for LP7 should say Academic, and when you start up LP7, the screen that first pops up when it's loading all the plugs and AU's will say Academic. If not, you've got the retail version.

  • Dreamweaver Education Version

Is the education version of dreamweaver exactly the same as the full version? (Only you just can't use the education version for commercial purposes)

Yep, that's pretty much it.  And when the next version arrives you can upgrade an educational version to a full version by purchasing an upgrade license at retail cost.
Just keep in mind this is true for the suite as well so if you feel you may have a need for them, buy them.  However, when upgrading you can go from individual->individual or individual->suite, or suite->suite, but not suite->individual.  And Adobe's policy for upgrades requires you upgrade once every 3 versions (ie: CS5 is the last chance for CS2 users to upgrade before they have to purchase a full license again).

  • Several Questions Regarding Educational Versions of Software

Alright, I have several questions regarding eduational software from Adobe.  I will be attending school in the near future (now I am not enrolled in any type of school) and I notice that Adobe has huge discounts on 'educational software'.
What exactly is the difference between the 'retail' version of a program and an educational version?  Do you need some sort of student ID to activate an educational version, or proof that you're in school, or anything special like that?  I've noticed people selling unopened educational versions on eBay and from what I hear there are no differences between the software, but this makes me wonder... why the price difference?
Also, I plan on buying another Mac in the near future - probably for school.  My second questions is - with this software (educational), can I put the programs on both my Desktop and my Laptop, or will they only work registered to one person on one computer?  I've heard from people that serial numbers can only be activated so many times.
Final question.  My hard drive recently crashed, and I lost a good bit of stuff and had to re-install everything.  If this would happen again, can I re-install all of the Adobe programs to a new hard drive?  Or am I going to encounter the whole 'serial numbers can only be activated so many times' thing?
Okay.  I think that about does it.  Any input would be great.  Thanks.

In terms of contents, there is normally no real difference between the retail and educational/student editions. There may be some extra fonts or clipart in the retail version, but this varies from release to release and from product to product.
You must qualify to purchase an educational/student version. Such qualifications are listed on Adobe's website. Normally you must provide proof of such qualification to whoever sells such software licenses to you. You cannot buy now on the basis that you will be a student in the future. You must have the student status at the time of the purchase.
Unlike retail versions, educational/student versions of Adobe software are not transferable. Sales of such "unopened" software on eBay should be regarded with suspicion. Authorized Adobe resellers do not offer software sales on eBay. The software is either stolen, used (but repackaged), or pirated.
Most Adobe software, including the Creative Suite software, may be simultaneously activated on up to two computers owned and used by only one individual. The second computer is typically a mobile computer if the first computer is a home computer for students. For retail, typically the first computer is one's office computer and the second computer is a mobile or home computer. The computers are not to be running the software simultaneously. And no, two students can't share a single copy on two separate computers.
The software may be activated and deactivated but after 20 or so such cycles, you will need to call Adobe and explain what's going on to obtain any additional such cycles. If you are activated on two systems and a disk drive or computer blows out and you need to reinstall the software without having had the ability to deactivate on the blown system, Adobe's activation support group will normally grant you an extra activation, assuming that you don't have a record of abusing the priviledge (such as claiming your disk drive crashes once a month!).

  • Does Shake 4.1 educational version come with the Tutorial manual?

I've been told that the retail 4.1 contains 3 manuals. I bought my edu version open-box and it came with User Manual Volume I & II but no Tutorial volume. I called Apple support and I was able to register it but they were not able to tell me if a "sealed" Educational box would have all 3 manuals like the retail vesion. Does anybody here have 4.1 Educational version who can clarify this? Also is it worth for me and is it legal to print out the pdf Tutorial Volume file?
    Thanks
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Each Apple educational software is identical to the relevant full version.
So, your educational Shake 4.1 should contain all manuals.

  • I have purchased Production Premium CS4 Educational Version. Its serial number is not working. Please help...

I have purchased Production Premium CS4 Educational Version. Its serial number is not working. Please help...

If you recently purchased this then it is not likely to be a valid sale/purchase.  Adobe does not sell older versions of their products and no one but Adobe provides student/teacher licensing.  If you purchased this some time years ago and it is only recently that you find you are not able to reactivate it with the original serial number you can try contacting Adobe Support thru chat and see if they will be willing to work with you to resolve this.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • How many computers can I install Indesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 on with an Asia Pacific Education version?

I've tried to have a look around among discussions, however, as it's CS4 and thus pretty outdated at this point, I'm having to start something new.
This is not for me, but a community organisation that I am volunteering for that has the copies and has asked me to see if they're allowed to install it on another computer within their small office.
Thanks in advance for any information!

    J,
I believe you can only install an educational version on one computer. But an educational version is for one student/teacher and cannot be sold/given away to others, so they may be far out already.
But you should ask someone from Adobe.
    You may try Customer Care,
    http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
    or Adobe Support (phone),
    http://helpx.adobe.com/adobe-connect/adobe-connect-phone-numbers.html
but they may tell you that the version is too old for them to deal with.
If you wish, you may report your (lack of) findings here, so I can maybe ask someone to find the right someone to give the final answers.

  • How can I tell if I have an Education version?

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I would appreciate some info.
I have FCE 3.5 and Aperture. I want to upgrade both to the newest versions.
I know I bought one of them with the education discount originally and that I can't buy the upgrade to that software. I will need to buy the full version.
Problem is, I don't remember which program is the education version. I would rather not have to pay full price for full versions of them both if I don't have to.
I think I remember reading once that the education version is supposed to have a message on the startup screen stating that is is an education version. Neither of my programs have any special labeling on the start up screen. Is there another way to tell?
    Thanks,
    Mike

In response to your "Why" question Ian, I want to upgrade for the AVCHD support. I am on the verge of buying the Canon HF100 camcorder. My old Canon Optura 200MC just gave up finally, and I would like to move away from the MiniDV format. I know iMovie 7 will do the job, but I really like the way FCE works and would rather stay with it.
As far as the lost features go, I read somewhere that I could still use the old Live Type, or at least import what it is missing. Is that correct?
I never put Soundtrack to much use, but I figure the old version will still be usable if I wanted to use it.
Thanks to you and Tom both for your informative posts. I have read many of them through the months and have learned a lot.

  • No Acrobat 9 Pro in Creative Suite 4 - Education version

Bought the CS4 box (education version). When I started the installation, the setup menu mentioned all programs indicated on the box. But Acrobat 9 Pro was not actually listed, it just mentioned that Acrobat Pro would overwrite any existing version but well, the option could not be SELECTED or DESELECTED. Then when it was all finished, I found no Acrobat 9 Pro in Vista Start Menu. And now if I run the setup again, as if I wanted to add or remove programs, there is not the slightest mention of Acrobat Pro in the list .... Tried to install an old evaluation version and give my box key number but ... this was refused ! could Adobe have "forgotten" to include Acrobat 9 Pro on the 4 CD's contained in the box ??????? Strange .. .Help ...Thanks Lydia

Which version of the suite did you purchase? Acrobat Pro is not included with every version.

I don't have any idea if the installer would mention it in a bundle that didn't include it.

Does somebody knows the price in Euro for an update from LR5.6 educational version to LR6 educational version? Thanks and Regards

All right. I've managed to get my iPad running again with IOS 7 now.
As an additional tip for anyone who might need the intel : I had to click on "restore" in iTunes 3 times to get it done. First time to launch the process, then a second time after a 75 min download, and a third time after whatever task iTunes/iPad had just finished doing... All this without any prompt. I mean iTunes did not give me any clue what to do next. It just stopped doing anything each time.
Thanks again Ralp for the password tip : I have skipped everything as advised.
Let's hope using this new OS won't be as painfull as installing it.
    Take-away:
It is not possible to upgrade an iPad 2 from IOS 5.1.1 to IOS 6.x. All the web is chatting about the impossibility to downgrade to IOS 6, yeah, yeah... It's impossible to upgrade too.
Attempting to do such an upgrade from iTunes, using shift+restore with a genuine ipsw file downloaded from Apple servers will make your iPad unusable (locked in "recovery mode"), with no other choice but to upgrade to IOS 7.
There's no early warning from iTunes about all that. It starts the upgrade process then aborts it, leaving the iPad gets locked into "recovery mode". Period.
