Retain Bookmarks

Hi,
I'm printing a pdf with bookmarks to the Adobe PDF printer to convert it into a Press Quality PDF. The conversion is happening properly but the problem is i'm losing the bookmarks in the converted PDF. How do I retain the original bookmarks. I'm using Acrobat Pro 9. Kindly help me out of this mess.
Thanks,
Mohazin

If the original pdf file is not press quality, you cannot make it press quality by reprinting. It will not improve the quality of the graphics. The issue is your workflow. If you cannot set the joboptions to Press Quality in your workflow, try setting it up that way by making it the default joboptions settings in Distiller.

I have purchased a new iMac, with Safari 5.0.5, but it won't retain bookmarks, I thought I can download a new Safari from Apple. So I deleted Safari from the application folder.
Then I tried to download Safari from Firefox but after finish download, what I got was a dmg file, with a pkg icon (an opened box) and it can't be installed. Same with Google Chrome.
My question is: how can I download Safari? And will it retain bookmarks?

Reinstall Safari from the Optional Installs.pkg on your Mac install disc that came with your iMac. Or in your case, you use Pacifist to extract the Safari app from the .dmg file.
    To bookmark a webpage:
Go to the webpage you want to bookmark. If you use tabs, you can open multiple webpages in tabs to bookmark them as a collection.
Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark, or Bookmarks > “Add Bookmarks for These Tabs.”
Type a name for the bookmark or collection in the dialog that appears.
Specify where you want to keep the bookmark or collection. You can add it to the bookmarks bar, the Bookmarks menu, or to a collection if you have created any.
    Click Add.
To add a bookmark quickly, click the Add button in the toolbar, or drag the webpage’s icon from the address field to the bookmarks bar.
To see your bookmarks, choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks.
In the future, rather then deleting an app, come here and ask for help first. More times then not, you will save yourself time and trouble.

  • TOC does not retain bookmarking between sessions

    Hello,
One of my complete courses developed in Captivate for SumTotal LMS is not retaining bookmarking between sessions.
When you re-enter the course, some of the bookmarking is lost.
Does anyone know of a fix for this issue?
    Thank you ahead of time.
    Chuck

    Hello Lilybiri,
Yes, Self Paced Learning is selected in TOC settings.
The individual that was testing the functionality was viewing the content linear.
He left the course after viewing about 10 slides out of 85.
When he returned to the course, the first 10 slides did not have a checkmark.
It did return him to the spot that he left off, and started placing checkmarks from their.
No issues with the knowledge checks  or final quiz not working.
Only issue is that the checkmarks were no longer present for previously viewed section.
He stated that this is an issue.
I do not see it as such as long as performance is not compromised.

I have an iPad running OS 4.3.3 and I want to upgrade to 5.1. Can I retain my bookmarks and how do I backup my music?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Firefox randomly reset it's self to deafault mode (but retained bookmarks), now won't retain cookies after closing firefox even though it's set to.

I was using Firefox last week and all of a sudden it crashed, when I started it back up again everything had been set back to factory default (but it kept my bookmarks). From then on it has refused to save cookies, I've been all through settings and everything is the way it should be. I have no add-ons that mess with cookies. I have no user.js file messing with anything. I've tried resetting firefox which did nothing, and I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled firefox. Nothing seems to fix the problem, every single time I close firefox or restart my computer I end up having to sign into every single website I go to....what gives?

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the <i>cookies.sqlite</i> file that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b> (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookies files like <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

Please update your profile, which shows you're using 10.4.11.
Locate the file Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist in the Finder and open the Info window. In the Sharing & Permissions section, does it show that you have read/write access? If not, change it so that you do.
If you do have write access, quit Safari and move the file to the Desktop. Rename the file Bookmarks.plist.bak to Bookmarks.plist. Launch Safari and try again.

  • Trying to sign in on one web site, I get this message: Cancel OpenID

The web site is for my electric bill. I have to open Safari, and sign in from there. The message I get using Fireox when I put in my user name and password is: Cancel OpenID. The web site is EPB.NET, and they have checked everything on their end and have no suggestions other than it's a browser incompatibility.
Yes, I've deleted cookies, history, cache and such. Yes, I've disabled all extensions.
It has been a problem for months.
Should I just make Safari my default browser?
    Thanks for any effective help!

You can go back to the release, but need to consider the different options.
You may either run both versions, but they will need separate profiles. Or you may downgrade to the Release version. It would be relatively easy to copy bookmarks etc
'''Whatever you do it is worth backing up the current profile first.'''
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
You will want to try to use at least some of those files. Put them somewhere safe outside Firefox profile or program paths. Your Desktop or My Documents would do.
Also if you only want to retain bookmarks the easiest method without messing with profile files is to use the backup option before you change over.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer#w_manual-backup]]'''_manual-backup'''
If you have both versions running with separate profiles it does have the advantage that you can take your time in migrating profile files. Here is the info on running multiple versions and profiles
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Testing_pre-release_versions#Installing_multiple_versions
Incidentally the Firefox version & channel previously known as Aurora and now know as Developer Edition now installs by default as an additional version and installs with its own separate profiles.
    * See [[Firefox keeps crashing at startup#w_try-a-clean-install]]'''_try-a-clean-install'''
    * https://developer.mozilla.org/Firefox/Developer_Edition
You could simply try installing Firefox 35.x over Firefox beta.
It will probably work. But issues could occur with the profile. More generally problems will occasionally also occur with program files when downgrading.
It would be best to do a clean install (explained in article linked above) removing the program files; and also renaming the profile folder. After installing overwrite only some of the files such as places.sqlite
    * This article goes into the fine details of what to transfer http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox#Suggested_profile_contents_to_transfer

  • I can't open firefox. when i double click on the icon, there is a message that says: the procedure entry point squlite3_db_status could not be located in the dynamic link library mozsqlite3.dll.

can i fix this problem anyhow or will i lose allllll my bookmarks if i reinstall firefox..??

The first thing to do is to locate your profile folder/directory, that is easiest to do if firefox itself is open! Then copy the whole lot somewhere safe such as onto your windows desktop. This step is not entirely necessary but a belts and braces procedure, because presumably you have no other backups of your bookmarks and so it seems a prudent precautionary step.
For informatiom the bookmarks themselves are stored multiple times. The main and most important is a file called ''places.sqlite'' there will also be a folder of backups with the extension ''.json''.
Normally Firefox will retain bookmarks and other data when reinstalling, as long as you do NOT use the option to delete data (however that is worded). The location of the profile folder is likely to be something like
    ''C:\Documents and Settings\[name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles''
Copy the whole lot from where it says Mozilla that should include the bookmark backups folder.
Now you can go ahead and do a clean reinstall of firefox. Noting that these files are in a totaly different file path from the profile. typically ''C:\Programs''
#download a new version of firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html <br> this will be firefox 5 not firefox 4 that is ok <br> [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forums/contributors/707043?last=40456 (discussion)]
    # save the file where you can find it such as on the desktop
#uninstall firefox using XP control panel option ( do NOT remove personal data)
#to ensure this is a clean install remove the firefox folder if it remains in your programs directory (do not confuse with the profile mentioned already)
    # run the install file for firefox 5 that you have saved already
This should result in a clean reinstall of firefox 5, which should have your bookmarks and any other settings. In future remember to make backups of bookmarks. (The profile folders/files saved initially should not be required).
If you had backup bookmarks, simply creating another profile may have worked to fix this problem.

  • Optimizing PDFs results in loss of embedded numbers

    Hello,
My organization is attempting to publish a document on the web that was built in InDesign CS3. The problem we are having is that when we optimize the PDF in Acrobat Professional, the document has vertical boxes with x's in them (x-boxes?) where numbers should be. Worse yet, the placement is random, and it's not for certain numbers (not all zero's but not all three's for example).
We've also noticed that when the text is coppied into Word's notepad, all of the original numbers appear in the text.
Any ideas as to what this is? This only appears to be happening with the Minion Pro font we use as text - all of our headlines in Helvetica are fine.

Another interesting development: When printing documents from InDesign to PDF, and then using PDF Optimizer in Acrobat, we are not getting the boxes embedded in the Minion Pro. If we Export the book to PDF (to retain bookmarks and hyperlinks), and then optimize, we see the boxes. However, different users are encountering different problems now - the Production manager has missing letters and numbers, while my workstation only produces missing numbers.
We may have to re-insert bookmarks automatically in a 'printed' PDF document if we can not resolve the export/optimization problem we are encountering.

  • I've tried everything--Firefox simply won't open. I opened the troubleshoot articles, but none of the fixes did the trick?

Firefox will not open. I tried every single troubleshoot recommendation, and it still won't work. I thought it may be under the "corrupt profile data" troubleshoot article, but when I followed the recommendations to change to a new profile, the profile manager would not open or run on my computer--as if it never existed. I tried downloading a different browser, and as soon as I imported my firefox data, it started misbehaving in the exact same way.
This is getting extremely frustrating. Anybody know what to do?

I am not sure it is a good idea to have two security programs, but presumably it will be ok if set correctly, but I certainly would not for instance run two Anti Virus programs they would be likely to conflict.
I am not sure if the error report may indicate Firefox is crashing but it needs the same steps anyway. So a brief explanation and a couple of suggestions.
    <u>Profiles</u><br/>
Before even considering deleting or creating profiles a very simple & quick test is always worthwhile, using Firefox's Safe Mode
*[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
    * [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data]]
Problems with the profile may prevent Firefox starting or cause all sorts of problems. <br />
(This is JUST FOR INFORMATION, I am not asking you to do anything.) <br/> Briefly the profile stores settings etc. and there are better options than just removing it. The simplest option is the Firefox Reset feature and although that looses extensions and some information it does at least retain bookmarks and passwords.
*[[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
More advanced users have better options available if they wish such as creating new clean profiles although it does need some care to be taken
    * [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]]
    <u>Program Files</u><br />
The profile and the main program files are completely separate. Possibly your problem is due to faulty program files or their installation. A clean install involves deleting these files rather than the profile files.
    <u>Next Steps</u>
    # Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode following the instructions from the article linked above. It probably will not help but is worth a try.
    # '''Do a clean reinstall'''
    ## you may want to copy or print the instructions
    ##download a new copy of the Firefox installer from <br /> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
##After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
##Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default: (Windows)
    ##*C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    ##*C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
##Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Other than the work-around you mention, the only way to reduce the number of automatic URL suggestions appearing in the address bar is to minimize your cache file (Empty Cache in the Safari Menu), clear your History on a frequent basis, and eliminate any bookmarks via your bookmarks manager that are inactive or rarely used. There is no way to fully eliminate it unless you do not want a cache file, plus have no need for retained bookmarks.

  • Want to revert to Firefox without Nightly (Windows), but Download says I have latest Firefox, no option to exclude/uninstall Nightly - how can I do it Tx

Want to uninstall Nightly from my Windows computer and revert to Firefox, which I have used for many years. Message when I attempted to download Firefox is that I have the latest version already.
The Help menu in Firefox refers only to Nightly Help, About etc. Does this mean that Nightly and Firefox are inseparable and that downloading Firefox again would give me Nightly again?
I have Nightly showing in Control Panel programs list, so assume can be removed via Control Panel.
Could anyone confirm that the latest download does not include Nightly? Or, if it does, how can it be excluded?
Also, in downloading/installing latest Firefox, is there provision for retaining bookmarks, settings etc?
    Thank you very much, Helen

    Hello Helen,
the latest stable firefox version is the 31.1.1 and you can download it from the next link (full installer) : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
[https://nightly.mozilla.org/ Firefox nightly] is a build for testing only, all new things first tested in nightly.
yes you can remove firefox from Control panel, but it is better to go for a clean-reinstall, this means you '''remove Firefox program files''' and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from the next link (all languages-full intaller)https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click the close button [[Image:Close 29]]).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default in '''Windows''':
    * C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    * Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    * Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your [[Profiles|Firefox profile]] data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]. <!-- Starting in Firefox 31, the Firefox uninstaller no longer lets you remove user profile data.Ref: Bug 432017 and https://support.mozilla.org/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer/discuss/5279 [Fx31] Windows uninstaller will no longer offer the option to remove personal data -->

  • Upgrading for idiots

I'm being forced to upgrade to 10.4 thanks to turbotax, and to be honest I have no clue how things work since the transition from OS9.
Is there a complete listing of things I need to write down and back up before I upgrade? I'd like to use this as an opportunity to reclaim some wasted space by loosing old applications I no longer use (Classic, AOL, assorted shareware and trials) but retain Appleworks, photoshop and Illustrator, Firefox, bbedit and so on.
I have an external firewire drive I can copy basically my entire current drives' contents to, but am not sure what I need to bring back over to retain bookmarks, address book contents, internet and mail settings. I had a good grasp on all of this in Classic, but don't know where to begin in OS X. Can I just drag the whole thing over to the external and go grab what I need later as needed (or will preferences and registrations need to started from scratch?)
Lastly, aside from ebay (have great doubts about the discs for sale there) is the full retail version of 10.4 still available for purchase through Apple's site? I going to guess iMac or cube Original discs won't work if I bought one from eBay.
Oh, and I did update the Firmware to the latest and greatest before I started any of this.
