Retain custom order in albums when exporting to different iPhoto library?

Hi all.
To ease resource consumption, I'm placing many of my 20,000 iPhoto9 items into a new iPhoto9 library.
I have many albums with pictures in custom order.
Any recommendations on how to retain that order when copying the photos/ albums to the new library?
If I copy the files to wherever, quit iPhoto and reopen in the new library for import, they files are imported to the new iPhoto library in whatever order they are listed in the finder, which is not the custom order I created in the album in the original album.
Don't want to waste all the time I spent putting them in certain order.
Many thanks!

You're not actually moving albums from one Library to another. Your exporting groups of photos to the FInder. Then import them to iPhoto. There's no connection between the two libraries.
The problem with this wirkflow is that you lose more than your custom sort. At the very lest you lose the ability to revert to original for edited photos, and the non-destructive editing feature. Depending on how you're exporting you may also be losing a lot of metadata.
You could try use iPhoto Library Manager   which will move albums from one Library to another directly, with all the versions and metadata intact. I'm not sure that it will preserve a custom sort, but you could drop the makers a line and enquire from them.
Other alternatives:
Duplicate your existing library, and then remove the pics you don't want from the new version.
Finally, you're using less than 10% of iPhoto's capacity and a 20k library is quite small these days. What is the problem you're trying to solve?

If you want to keep using your custom workflow, create a sequential title for the pics in the Albums, export using the File -> Export command, choosing to use the Title as filename. Then import to the new Library and sort on Title.

  • When exporting images from iPhoto library to Aperture 3 library the highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  This happen to all images in the Aperture 3 library, why?

For some reason all the images in Aperture 3 library have had their highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  I can correct them one at a time with contrast control.  This just happen on its on after I uploaded MOuntain Lion.  Now when I go to transfer images from iPhoto this happens.  The images are all right in iPhoto but this is not the case with Apeerture.  I have 15,000 images in Aperture 3 and I can't afford the time to correct them one at a time.  What is it that I did to cause this problem?

You have "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" turned on.
Toggle this on/off from the View menu.
Thresholds are set at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Advanced".  (I have mine set to 100% ~ it's not clear what the scale is.)

  • Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?

Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?  Changing the quality of the print changes the size of the saved file and thus impacts the speed at which it is moved on the internet.  But other than size of the file, what is the advantage of changing the quality?

I have no idea why you would want to do anything
Some people want lower quality to reduce file size for different reasons
It is an option - if you do pot want to do that do not use that option

  • How to export photos from iPhoto Library to normal folders?

    Hi,
I have been using iPhoto for a long time now, and I have many many thousands of photos well organised with albums and folders in my iPhoto library. However I find some things difficult and inefficient to do in iPhoto and I'm trying to move into other softwares like Photo Mechanics and Lightroom.
One of these things I find hard to do is to backup, I don't want to keep something like three libraries and import from camera into one library and do the same to the other two, switching external drives and computers. Nor do I want to copy a 250GB library once every couple of days, since it takes a while with non-SSD drives. Is there a more effective way to do this?
In the iPhoto "package contents" all my photos are organised by date, which is not really great since I have albums in my library filled with photos from all around my library organised in folders, if that made any sense. Is there a way to export my iPhoto library keeping all my folders and albums intact (also ratings)? Like folders containing photos within folders with the names that were used inside iPhoto? I've already tried using the normal export tool, it doesn't work since it goes by dates or "events".
I have tried the "iPhoto to Disk" software, but I'm curious if there is a better way? Will it be easier to do this in Aperture?
    Thanks in advance

export using the option for "subfolder format" - Exporting From iPhoto
Backing up - simplest use TimeMachine - or software like Carbon Copy Cloner that can update only the new portions of the iPhoto library
As to "better than iPhoto to disk" - it is a rest program - what is it that you  want to do "better"
And for Aperture questions you will get better answers in the Aperture forum as that is where Aperture uses hang out
And with regards to going into the iPhoto library package contents - don't - it is not supported and is very dangerous - a small mistake there can wipe out your library - there never is a reason to be in it unless instructed by an expert - there simply are no user serviceable parts in it

  • When you rebuild your iPhoto library does it erase all your photos

When you rebuild your iPhoto library does it erase your photos and my iPhoto keeps crashing i was wondering if there was a fix for this?

When you rebuild your library to be able to use the new version of iPhoto if that is what you are talking about, it will simply rebuild it so that the new version can access the photos that you already have on your computer.  This will not affect the files in a way to delete them.  It simply just makes it so that the new version can be compatible and use the photos that you have on your computer.

  • How to change the order of fields when exported to csv

I am using LiveCycle Designer 8 and have created a great form with the correct tab order.
However, when the form is filled in and returned to me, the fields in the CSV file are all over the place. How can I make sure the fields in the CSV file are displayed in the same order as the tab order?

The actual requirment is to re-arrange the elements of the queryoutput node, to look more organised
    say for ex.
    Seq 1:
c code                            company name                          g/l ac                g/l ac description
    Seq2 :
g/l ac description             c code                                       g/l ac                company name
Seq 1 way of representation is more organised that Seq2. How can we achieve this re-arranging of ordering in the queryoutputnode.

  • Can't See Albums Within Folder on Shared iPhoto Library

My G5 is set to share its iPhoto library, and I can see most of the albums from my Ti-Book's iPhoto. But the Ti-Book can't see G5 albums which are located within iPhoto folders. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks, Will

I'd like to know the same thing. Why do albums within folders not show up separately when shared?
I've tried searching for this within the discussion area here, but I frankly find searching here to be very unfulfilling. I'm sure the answer is somewhere, but searching all of the obvious words in various combinations (iphoto shared folders albums) produces mostly garbage results. I also love how including quotes around something prompts quotation marks to appear in the search. Brilliant (sarcasm).

  • Error message when trying to Copy iPhoto Library

I am trying to backup my iPhoto Library from it's location on a WD external hard drive to another WD external hard drive. The Library is 54GB in size. When I try to copy the library, it copies about 1.1GB then I get this message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
I have used the Rebuild Photo Library to 1. Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions, and 2. Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup, and it still gives me the same message when I try to copy the Library.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks

There must be a damaged file or files somewhere in the remainder of the Library.
Try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. Set the Rebuilt Library onto the external.
This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • "Import failed" message when trying to import iPhoto library to PE11

I receive an "Import failed" message when trying to import my iPhoto library to my trial version of PE11. I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 and using iPhoto 11. Anyone able to help? I have tried 4 or 5 times now with the same result.

If you're really sure you want to import the whole iphoto library (which is what that command does), then just export the photos to the desktop, put them where you want to keep them, and use File>Get photos and videos>from files and folders to import them. The 'from iphoto' command makes duplicates anyway, so you aren't losing anything by doing it this way.

  • Moving original images when using a "referenced" iPhoto library...

    Hello.
My iPhoto library is "referenced" (ie. iPhoto does not copy the images when importing) to my RAW image library which is manually organized outside the iPhoto library. If I want to move the location of these images, does anyone know how iPhoto handles this? Does iPhoto loose track of them when I move them? Will I have to individually re-link all the images? Is there a good way of going about this?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

I've had a test alias library find all of the files automatically when the move was to a different location on the same hard drive. Moving to another hard drive it was hit or miss as Terence mentioned. Sometimes re-pointing to a single file in a folder got the whole folder, sometimes not.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Error when trying to load iPhoto library from External HD

I copied my iPhoto library to my 3TB Seagate External HD to save space on my MacBook Air, but when I try to load that library (either by holding option as I open it and select the one in my HD or by double clicking the one in my HD) I get this error message: "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable." My iPhoto library is taking up too much space, please help!

  • Error 36 when trying to recover iphoto library from time machine back up

When I try to recover a backup of an iPhoto library from my Time Capsule using TimeMachine, I receive the following error code: "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)." I have read a post regarding Snow Leopard 10.6.6 being the issue. Has anyone else had experience of this and if so how did you reslove this.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Connect to the TC via Ethernet cable if at all possible.
Try repairing your backups, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Finder Error -36 when trying to backup iPhoto Library

I am unable to backup my iPhoto Library to another drive. This is the error I get in the Finder "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)". I have done a complete rebuild of the iPhoto library, but the Finder won't identify the corrupt data inside the iPhoto library. Since the Finder is telling me "some data" can't be read or written, any suggestions on how to find the corrupted file(s) inside the library so I can remove them from the library?

Solved the problem. I browsed the iPhoto Library/Originals folder to determine which photos I imported today, since I was able to back up the library file yesterday. I exported the 56 various photos that I imported today, then deleted them from iPhoto. Afterwards, I was able to copy the iPhoto Library file. So one or more of the 56 files is corrupted, even though they all open fine with a graphics program, such as GraphicConverter.
