Retaining layer styles in a text layer merge down

I created some text and added layer styles to it.  However when I merge the text, first rasterizing then merge down, I lose the layer styles.  The text goes to its original color and no shadow, no stroke, bevels or anything else.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
If you view the image at 100% view (actual pixels) before rasterizing and merging, does that make a difference?

  • Opacity & transparency related layer styles lost on rasterize/flatten/merge down (cs6)

    So I'm working on a project and I'm making a button and I have come across an issue that I don't normally have with this particular button...I'm not sure why it's happening or how to fix it...but it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if anyone can help out or if it's a known bug or anything like that!
    So, I have three folders for the three different states, and within each folder are multiple layers, some with layer styles (it seems to be gradients that are playing up here, and opacity related), some with no layer styles but just lowered opacity. I need to flatten each of the folders to create the button sprites. The problem is...I go to flatten the folder and it appears to turn off any gradient related layer styles, and anything at a lowered opacity is ramped up to 100%. I tried going through and rasterizing the invidiual offending layers. Same problem. I tried creating blank layers and merging down the offending layers. Same problem.
    I'm stumped! Image examples below:
    This problem is messing with my mojo! Any help appreciated!! (and yes, my adobe is all patched up and updated)... I feel like I haven't had to deal with problems flattening transparency for many versions....

    Generally speaking you can't expect to collapse groups of adjustment layers into a single layer and hope for much of anything useful to come of it.
    If you've gotten Photoshop showing what you want to see, what's the problem with leaving the groups as they are, then just doing Save As (e.g., PNG) to store your work products?
    Can you save a small PSD file and make it available online, so we can look carefully inside it to see what you're doing?

  • Filter Effect and Layer Style in the same layer vs separate layers

    I'm adjusting a photographic image and am using both a filter effect and a layer style in the same layer on a Smart Object.  I want to separate the two effects into two layers, so one layer has the filter effect (Nik) and one layer has the layer style (Color Overlay) (with the goal of merging/rasterizing the Nik filter effect with the Smart Object but keeping the layer style unmerged).  I can make two layers and move one effect without problem, but the visual result of each effect on a separate layer is quite different from having both effects in the same layer.   The Blend Mode for all my layers is Normal.  Within the Color Overlay panel, the blend mode is Linear Burn.
    I don't understand why the visual result is different.  I'm not an advanced user of Photoshop, so maybe I'm missing something.  This is a trial of CS6 that I'm using.
    Layer 1: a layer style and a filter effect, stacked
    looks very different from....
    Layer 2:  a layer style
    Layer 1:  a filter effect

    If you want two separate layers, then on the duplicate layer with the Color Overlay layer style you might try different layer blending modes.
    For example, below looks the same having the Color Overlay with linear burn on the second layer and changing the layers blend mode to Hue.
    You could also put the layer in a group and apply the layer style to the group.

  • BUG: Saving Text with Layer Styles to PDF

    I was just able to take the CS6 beta for another test run, and it seems the following ancient, but high-priority bug (at least for me) hasn't been addressed:
    When saving large Photoshop documents (composites in resolutions like, say 7000x10000 pixels) to Photoshop PDF, certain layer styles are often not exported correctly when applied to text layers. The layer styles that are affected are those that render pixels that are then clipped inside the text, such as Gradient Overlay, Bevel & Emboss etc.
    When output, they usually don't span the entire text in the PDF, but are cut off with a straight line at some point (I can't supply an example image right now, my apologies). Inside of Photoshop, they render correctly at all zoom levels. My guess is that this is somehow related to the raster data being written as individual tiles and for some reason, some of these are then omitted for layer styles.
    The problem isn't new to the CS6 Beta, but has existed for many versions. I have run into it in both Mac and Windows versions. The current workaround is to always expand layer styles on the text layers that are affected into layers before exporting, which is tedious and error-prone since there is inevitably something that gets missed (EDIT: I was wrong there, that workaraound doesn't work, the problem persists even if the layer style is expanded into a layer that is then applied as a clipping group).

    Two possibilities: Pre-compose everything and fade the comp or use a second layer that has the layer styles, but in its Blending Options for the layer styles has set Fill opacity to zero, so only the styles are rendered, but not the source. Whjat you are seeing is normal behavior based on how styles are supposed to work. Whenever there is a non-zero (non-transparent) pixel, the get applied, where the pixels opacity acts as amultiplier for the style's intensity. Looks good for some, but often causes this popping appearance...

  • Issues with merging layers with layer styles

    Just downloaded CS6 Photoshop off the creative cloud and the merge layer command does not work. What is happening is there is one layer with a layer style then a shape layer and when I hit Cmd E it merges the layers but the layer style will not merge with it. I was chatting it up and everything they recommended did not work. It works on all my other co-workers computers and we are all on the cloud. I tried renaming pref. folder, settings folder, re-installing, holding down shft+option+cmd on start up. I also created a test account but that turned out to be a major inconvenience. Once logged into the account there is nothing there. The suggestions just started getting more ridiculous as chat proceeded. Nothing.
    Has anyone experienced this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution where I don't have to create a whole new admin account just to see if CS6 Photoshop works correctly?
    P.S.
    Adobe customer portal is about worthless.

    There are two merge layers type commands  one is merge down involves only two layers and another that is merge visible layers.  In my opinion there is a problem with the way merge down is implemented. When you use merge down if the bottom layer in the merge down has a layer style the merged layer also has this layer style attached.  This means that pixels from the layer merged into it will be effected by this layer style.  The result may well not look like the composite looked before the merge. The will also happen in CS5. Merge visibile layer works the correct way in my view as the merge progresses the top two layers are merge by applying any layer masks and layer styles first and merging the two layers the resulting layer has no layer masks and no layer style. This result is then merged with the next lower layer with its masks and style applied first. The result is a single layer without mask and style that looks like the original composite view.  If your having the problem with CMD|CTRL+E and the result has a layer style try turning  the layer style visibility off see if that helps.  If it helps some  backup to before the merge down  use merge visible or first rasterzise the bottom layer to be merged.

  • Scripting New "Rasterize Layer Style" feature of Photoshop CS6

    I want to script new feature added to Photoshop CS6 "Rasterize Layer Style". I tried Layer.RasterizeLayerStyle() but this function doesn't exist.
    I know that I still can add an empty layer below the layer and merge them together, but it would be much easier and the code would be more readable if I can use "Rasterize Layer Style" command in my script.

    Did you try installing the optional Scriptlisener Plug-in to see if it recorded anything.   Though Layer>Rastersize>Layer Style is new you could always accomplish what it does other ways.  Like merging visible layers where one layer is empty.  It just rasterize the layer along with its layer style. In fact if the layer in question was a smart object layer after the "Rasterize Layer Style" operation that is exactly whet you will have a raster layer no longer will it be a smart object layer.
    Adobe shortchange scripting in CS6 for example you can not read the usere interpolation Photoshop preference if its set to the new default setting Bicubic Automatic and you can not set it to Bicubic Automatic if you read that it is not set to Bicubic Automatic.  Adobe simply dropped the ball and did not add the nessary update to support CS6 new features to scripting and installing the sicptlistner will turn off a new feature like allowing tool recording.  CS6 is by far the buggest release of Photoshop I ever installed. The list of the Photoshop versions I have installed is
    PS3
    PS5
    PS5.5
    PS7
    CS
    CS2
    CS3
    CS5
    CS6
    I use CS3. The money I sent upgrading to CS5 and CS6 so far has been a wast of money... Phehaps Adobe will fix the bugs and not deferr them to some future release like they historically do.

  • PSE 7 - Layer Styles don't show on white background?

    Hello!
    I've encountered some odd, but repeatable, situations with PSE 7's Layer Styles. If you have a white background, add a layer to that and then apply the Layer Style (like "Blue Ghost," "Heavy Noisy," "Noisy," "Radioactive," and others) you do not see the Layer Style.
    However, the layer is marked with the "fx" symbol. And...what really surprised me is that if I change the color of my background layer to anything but white, they then show up! Note that things like "Radioactive" is a bright green edging layer styleit should easily show up on white. And my layer that has the layer style applied to it is above the background layer and visible. The picture part of the layer is quite visible, but the layer style is not as long as the background layer is white.
    I think this is a glitch/bug...but it's odd, because it's not there in PSE 6 and I can't imagine why Adobe would change this in PSE 7...and as far as I know there is no "new" feature associated with Layer Styles in PSE 7.
    If anyone has any other information on this or a work-around, I'd be most interested in hearing about it.
    Thank you!

  • Add text layer to all files in folder: what about files that already are searchable?

    Hi everyone
    I'd like to make my scanned PDF documents searchable using the OCR feature of Adobe Acrobat X Standard. The scanned PDF files are stored in one folder (or its subfolders respectively). In principle I could just go to the OCR feature, tell it to add that folder to the OCR conversion list and replace all PDF files in it with searchable versions.
    Some of the files in the folder, however, already are searchable because they were created from Word files for instance. My question is: What will Acrobat's OCR feature do with these files that already are searchable? Will it leave them unchangend? Or will it create new files and replace their existing "text layer" with a new text layer?
    One of the reasons for my question is, that the existing "text layer" is free of recognition errors by definition (because it has been added by Word's conversion feature). This means, a new text layer added by Acrobat's OCR feature can only be equal or inferior in quality compared to the existing one. In the latter case, it wouldn't make sense to replace the existing "text layer".
    A second reason is that some of the already searchable files have security properties (i. e. signatures). What is going to happen to them when the OCR feature creates a new file?
    Thank you for your answers!

    The usual thing is that Acrobat will object, saying the file contains "renderable text", and do nothing.
    OCR on a file with signatures will, at best, invalidate the signature. More likely, all trace of the signature will be deleted, and it will attempt to do OCR on the visual appearance, finally leaving a graphic. OCR is  not really intended as a late-stage process.

  • What's the keyboard shortcut for "Extrusion from Text Layer"? (Mac CS6)

    I keep triggering this by accident and can't figure out what combo I'm hitting, or how to disable it. I've looked in the Keyboard Shortcuts but can't find it.
    I'm on a laptop keyboard, so I use the fn key a lot to access enter when I'm finished editing text. Every once in a while (but often enough to be annoying), I attempt to enter out of text editing and suddenly everything stops, the gray rotating "processing" cursor appears, and for a few seconds I'm in a mild panic about how long it's been since I saved. Then a dialog box comes up asking if I want to switch to the 3D workspace or something. Clicking "no" doesn't stop the unwanted 3D thing from happening, and the last History item then says "Extrusion from Text Layer." I then Undo and go on with what I was doing.
    I've always got my left hand positioned over the lower left corner of the keyboard, and move quickly when using shortcuts and switching tools. I have no idea what combination I keep hitting by accident - something with fn, ctrl, opt, cmd, shift, I don't know, plus possibly return or enter. What is it, and how do I disable it?

    Trial-and-error prevails: It's fn + shift + return. (Or shift + enter on a full keyboard, I suppose? Unless that still does a soft line break like shift + return.)
    But only when I'm actively editing the text layer - not with the text layer selected and Move tool active, or even with the text layer selected and Type tool active, but only when in the process of using the Type tool to edit the text layer. I still have no idea to disable it, though.

  • Copy layer style in illustrator

    Hi all,
    I'd like to know how I can copy a layer style (effect, gradient.,,) of an object to another like in photoshop.
    I tried eyedropper, but it only picks gradient not the effect.
    thanx

    Set up the Layer with the effects you want and then highlight the Layer line in the Appearance panel. With the Layer highlighted, from the Graphic Styles panel flyout select New Graphic Style. Give it a name. You should get a new style that looks like this. This will apply the layer style to a new layer.
    You will have to have a fill and stroke on the items on that layer for it to show.

  • Accesing layer styles from a filter plugin

    It's possibile to acces a layer style (ex. drop shadow) from a filter plugin?

    Yes, from an automation plugin you can get the parameters to the layer styles. On the layer object (descriptor) there is a keyLayerEffects, classLayerFXVisible object (descriptor). That has objects (descriptors) such as keyInnerGlow or keyInnerShadow. Build the Getter plug-in and install it. Make your file with your layer effects. Then run getter from the File > Automate > Getter menu and you will get a Getter.log file on your desktop that shows all the things available in your document. Remember that the Getter code is reusing the Listener code so there is a bit more work for using the Getter output. All the ->Put* routines need to be converted to ->Get* routines and you need to invert the order of the calls. Here is some code that I just did this exercise on, in JavaScript, but you should get the idea. This code gets all the brush toolPresets and sees if the Preset I'm looking for is present. You can find the 'keys' in the PITerminology.h and PISTringTerminology.h files in your SDK. 'capp' is classApplication for example. You would want 'Lyr ' for classLayer.
    // find if the following brush is loaded
    FindBrushPresetByName( "foo" ).toString() + " : " + FindBrushPresetByName( "Restore Brush - PA" ).toString();
    function FindBrushPresetByName( brushPresetName ) {
         var ref = new ActionReference();
         var presetManagerStrID = stringIDToTypeID( 'presetManager');
         ref.putProperty( charIDToTypeID( 'Prpr' ), presetManagerStrID );
         ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID( 'capp' ), charIDToTypeID( 'Ordn' ), charIDToTypeID( 'Trgt' ) );
         var desc = executeActionGet( ref );
         if ( desc.count > 0 && desc.hasKey( presetManagerStrID ) ) {
              var list = desc.getList( presetManagerStrID );
              var toolPresetClassID = stringIDToTypeID( 'toolPreset' );
              for ( var i = 0; i < list.count; i++ ) {
                   var listType = list.getObjectType( i );
                   if ( listType == toolPresetClassID ) {
                        var toolDescObj = list.getObjectValue( i );
                        var keyName = charIDToTypeID( 'Nm  ' );
                        if ( toolDescObj.count > 0 && toolDescObj.hasKey( keyName ) ) {
                             var toolNameList = toolDescObj.getList( keyName );
                             for ( var ii = 0; ii < toolNameList.count; ii++ ) {
                                  var toolName = toolNameList.getString( ii );
                                  if ( toolName == brushPresetName ) {
                                       return true;
         return false;

  • Noob Question - Applying a texture to text layer

    I've tried searching for the answer, but probably just don't know the right keywords to use, but how do I apply a texture (image) to only show up over a certain layer such as a text layer?  Meaning I want the texture to only show over the text and not anywhere else.

    Use the texture layer as a track matte for the text layer.

  • How can I merge layers with multiple layer styles added to them?

    So I have this issue where I have to merge lots of layers in order to finish the job. Thing is that two of them have layer styles added to them. Each one has two different layers styles added to it. If I try to merge the layers, the effect won't stay the same and only one layer style will apply (and not even this one works correctly). Is there any cure for this? Thank you!

    Here is how it looks before I merge the layers.
    And here is how it looks after I merge the layers.
    Why won't it stay the same?

  • A bug?  Layer styles change or dissappear when you flatten/merge layers.

    Does anyone else experience this problem in CS3?
    An example for me would be,
    right now I have an outer glow with noise applied to something but when I flatten the few layers I have in the file, the noise simply disappears or the glow becomes faded. With other layer styles, there might be a change, too, but usually the effect just weakens in color when i flatten the layers.
    any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

    I either used too many words or too few, but I'm not really sure.
    The specific layer style combo and layer merge I am talking about is simpler than you might imagine..(see the pictures I posted of the results of the merge.)
    Yellow outer glow at full opacity with 100% noise, merged down with a single layer. (and that single layer does not have anything other than a fill in it)
    When i merge the two, (both blending modes are set to normal) the noise then disappears and the glow fades. It really does not have anything to do with how close or far away the "view" is.
    Trust me, I tried it.
    I even used a microscope and a telescope..
    It doesn't change anything.
    In other words, the layer styles always look okay regardless of how they are viewed, UNTIL you flatten or merge them.
    So to finally answer Buko's question, the answer is no.
    And I did actually take into consideration what D.Katz said about possible interference with the appearance.. view needing to be at 100 to even judge what's going on.
    The problem I am experiencing only occurs the minute one layer combines with another layer that has a layer style(s).
    If you compare the two images I posted, you will see that there is a very large loss in quality rendering the layer style not even worth using in the first place.

    All text layers in my file is the same problem. The copy text layer is not available. But I can paste a layer style. I tried on another PSD and same thing. Solved it myself and am posting the 'solution' for others that are not frequent users of PS..
    I was trying to copy the font and color of my text to a bunch of other text layers. Come to find out that it's not possible (as far as I know) without doing the formatting using blending options. Instead, I used the regular text formatting tools. All's good now.
