Retaining URLs in placed PDF file

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I thought it was worth asking.
Basically I take Pass4Press pdfs and repurpose them for digital publication.
My question is; Can you create the links in Acrobat and have Indesign recognise them. At the moment I import the pdf, then create a new layer where I create url buttons for each one.
Working on CS5.5 and Acrobat 10 for Mac.
Many thanks in advance.

No, InDesign can not recognize hyperlinks in placed PDF files.

  • Update placed PDF files to recognize transparency

I have used Croptima InPlate to create an imposed cut and stack imposition of a large 3800 variable data project. Due to the size of the file, I've only imposed the black plate variable data. I want to use Acrobat's add background tool to add an imposed master graphic of the rest of the file image (the black-only variable text will overlay the other elements).
Croptima has done a great job with the imposition, however it has placed all the files in the layout with a white backround (not transparent as is resident in the source PDF file. When I try to add the main background in Acrobat the white boxes from the PDF mask out the background image. I can manually remove the boxes in Acrobat one at a time, but doing this across a 6-up, 640 page document makes for quite the undertaking.
My question is if there's a way in InDesign to update all placed PDF files to display with a transparent background instead of the opaque background.
The relink feature with import option won't do it document wide, it wants to individually prompt for every graphic and won't retain the page assignments.
I found a script on the forum which will update each link to a transparent background individually, but I have to manually enter in each page number of the imposed PDF ... also a huge time suck.
Does anyone know of a way to change the placement properties document-wide of a single, multi-page placed PDF to a transparent background instead of opaque?
Or... does anyone know how to get Croptima InPlate to place PDF files with a transparent option?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Indesign CS4 won't retain passwords for placed PDFs

    Hi,
I've just upgraded to CS4 from CS2 and I'm having a problem with placed PDF files with password protection.
I wonder if anyone knows why CS4 seems unable to retain passwords for secure PDF files that I have previously placed. Every time I open a document CS4 brings up a 'PDF security password' dialog and I have to enter the password for every placed secure PDF file in the document – no matter how many times I input the passwords and save the document it still happens.
I never encountered this problem in CS2, all I used to do was place a PDF, enter the password for the secure file and then the next time I opened the document with the placed PDFs it would just open without being prompted for the passwords – CS2 just 'remembered' them or something.
There's probably a setting for this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it, so any help with this would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Thanks for your replies guys, I think that a little more information about what I'm doing might help you understand my situation.
I am the creator of the PDFs, which are adverts, and these are secured with only one password (for permissions) in my workflow to allow them to be proofed to the client (but to prevent them from being passed on and subsequently altered by third parties.) The adverts are subsequently placed into an InDesign document for a publication which I solely produce.
Previously, when placing these files in InDesign CS2 you only had to enter the permissions password once to place the file and from then on InDesign CS2 did not require the password to be entered again even if you closed the document and re-opened it (unless the artwork had been modified).
I've been using CS2 with this workflow for years and there's never been a problem with my PDFs – not event at the pre-press stage as I generate a high res PDF file for the entire publication and upload this to repro with whom I have a close working relationship and I'm certain that they would have informed me of any problems. Although I think that the final PDF would not be affected by passworded files?
I quite agree, I wouldn't expect someone else to place a file that required a password to do so – but that's not the case here. I'd like to understand why CS4 (and interestingly it seems CS3) doesn't retain the permissions password after it has been entered in the first instance – in the same way that CS2 did. It's inconvenient to have to enter it for each advert in the document every time I re-open it.
Yes, I could remove the security, but for me, that seems to defeat the object of being able to generate just one PDF file in the first place to use in my workflow.

  • Placed PDF file prints jagged

My company recently upgraded from Adobe Suite CS2 to CS4.  We also purchased a new printer.  I am still figuring out things but I haven't found a solution to my problem yet.  I am not sure if it is the program or the printer (Ikon Business Pro 560c - has post script - new drivers)
    Problem:
Our company logo was created in Illustrator CS4 and saved as both .AI and .PDF
I placed the PDF file into Indesign CS4 along with other graphics and text.  When I printed from Indesign the logo appeared jagged.
I replaced the file with the .AI version.  It did clean up the edges some but not completely.  They are still a bit wavery if you look close.
The regular person would not notice, but my boss is very detailed oriented and pressuring me to fix this. I don't understand why a vector image that is supposed to retain quality no matter the size (large or small) would look blurry.
This has also happened with text that has been converted to outlines.  (usually small text)
Let me know if you need more information.  I did not get my degree in graphic design, and am self taught so I am hoping this is something that can be easily fixed.  Thanks for any input.

I Placed both of these, blew them up to 300%, turned them sideways on letter-size paper and printed them on my HP Laserjet. They look fine.
I can make these look pretty bad if I choose Print > Graphics > Send Data: Proxy. You've got it set for All, or Optimized Subsampling, right?
It might also help to set your printer for Postscript only. Sometimes PCL printers do some funny things with vectors.
And I'd be willing to bet Peter's suggestion of going to PDF and printing that fixes it, even in PCL.

  • How do I copy the URL of a PDF file that I have opened in FireFox using FoxIt Reader add-on?

This does NOT seem to be a FoxIt question because, when I use FoxIt 5.0 as my PDF reader in Internet Explorer 8, I do not have this problem. I have encountered the problem only when using FoxIt 5.0 as my PDF reader in FireFox 4.0. The problem is quite annoying. I NEED to capture the URLs of the PDFs I view and I prefer to use FireFox as my browser. The problem exists because no destination field is displayed when FoxIt opens in FireFox. A destination field IS displayed when FoxIt opens in IE.

Another option for sending large files is to use :
    http://www.filedropper.com/
You upload the files to the website and it creates
a URL that you can copy and paste into an email
which you send to the recipient and they use the
generated link to get the file.

  • Displaying the URL parameters in pdf file.

Hello, I need help about using JavaScript with pdf file. I have an URL like this: http://www.a.org/mta/sigtr_mta.pdf?&rqst_id=8762312&inst=The+Jackson+Laboratory&pi=Dr.PI& 022008-UCD. Is there a way that I can extract the URL parameters (such as rqst_id or inst ) from JavaScript in this pdf and replace some form text field with the parameters and set these fields to read only.
I appreciate any of your help or hint!

this.URI(), I believe, will get you the complete URI that the document was opened from. Then you can parse it any way you'd like.

  • Duplicated URLs inside our PDF files ?

    Forum,
We are using Adobe Acrobat for creating plenty of materials and documentations which contains quite many links, These links are internal links which point/redirect to other sections on the exact same PDF file itself, Or external links which point/redirect to other PDF files and/or locations.
Our users are encountering an issue which is that whenever they open any PDF file in their Internet Explorer browsers and clicking on any of the links, Nothing works at all. Because, The URL which is shown in the address bar is duplicated, So, Obviously it will not open anything.
For example: A user opens a PDF document in the IE browser, the document has a link which points to: (http://SiteURL/Docs/File1.pdf), If the user clicked on that link, The user will be redirected to: http://SiteURL/Docs/File1.pdfhttp://SiteURL/Docs/File1.pdf
How this problem can be fixed ?

I am not the one who is creating these PDF files, But our skilled content owners are doing that and they do follow official guidelines such as: Adobe Acrobat X Pro * Create a link and the like

  • Crop marks inaccurate in "placed" PDF file, ok in original ID file??

    Hi all,
I've created a file using InDesign (CS5) and exported it to PDF format, with crop marks (for proofing purposes).  I then "place" the PDF file(s) back into an InDesign document and align them as a master for printing/cutting.  However, the crop marks are ever so slightly off (maybe 1/32 of an inch or less?).  As the cutter cuts every 2 inches, this "off-ness" gets larger with each 2" piece cut down the page so the last object ends up being maybe 1/16 of an inch off.  The original InDesign file prints exactly on-mark.
Why is this and is there a way to fix it??
    Thanks!

Getting crop marks isn't the issue, as I can do that using a variety of methods, including what you describe.  In our case, the PDF is less work because we create individual PDFs of each object (business cards, in this case) to send out for proof and we'd rather use the handy built-in method of placing a PDF to a master of several cards instead of pasting or recreating each original on the master.
I guess I'm just wondering why a robust program designed for production printing such as this has an option for including crop marks in a PDF if the PDF isn't going to be accurate when placed back into a design file?  I was hoping I made an error in my set-up somehow, which is still possible I suppose.

  • CS5 - Placed Indesign files vs placed PDF files

Does anyone have any information as to wether is better to create indesign layouts with 100+ placed Indesign files or PDF files? Does one produce more efficient / bulletproof PDF(for print) in the end? We produce many layouts with 100+ placed images and are thinking of switching to placing indesign files within a larger indesign layout.

I've noticed that placing 100's of InDesign files/ pages into other InDesign document causes my system to slow down.
In the case of placing 100's of files inside another, I find the PDFs seem to work better.
This is something I have to do when working on a book file. I don't have imposition software. So I have to use the Print Booklet from time to time.
I can place the 100 indesign files into another document. But that takes time. But I can PDF the entire book in a single go. From there I can import the 1000's of pages into InDesign via a script http://indesignsecrets.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-indesign.php
I can then proof the book on screen as it would look when printed. Something not really possible to do with a normal Book in InDesign. Checking double page spreads that break across chapters is a particular thing I have to look for and make sure are working.
From here I can make Print Booklet for in-house "proofing" and use the term "proofing" loosely, as it's just to check that the DPS across spreads are ok before sending off to the printers to get the real proofs.

  • Make Hyperlinks Active works on URL, not on PDF files

When I'm working on my site and click "make hyperlinks active" to test them, the link associated with a web page at another site on the Internet works, but the hyperlinks associated with pdf files I've selected on my computer don't work. I click and nothing happens.
When I check the files on the computer and just click on the they open fine. They won't work from iWeb, however, when I check make hyperlinks active.
When I uploaded the site, and tried to download the pdf files by clicking on the links on my site, some worked and some didn't. Some opened rather quickly, some took forever.
ANY AND ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED.
    Rex

The link to a file doesn't work in the iWeb application
Publish your site to a folder on the desktop, launch it in your browser by double clicking the index.html file and click on your PDF link to see if it directs you to its location on your hard drive.
If it doesn't, you have not set it up correctly in iWeb.
If you are uploading to a server other than .Mac, open an appropriate page folder on your server using your FTP application to see if the PDF or Zip file is actually there.

  • How to retain Transparency in PDF file while exporting?

    Hi All,
In our project we export the PDF file by using two option.
    1. By using PDF Style file
    2. By using Default settings (IPDFExportPrefs Interface)
We have one image frame in template which contains transparent image.
    1. In this case it copies IPDFExportPrefs from PDF Style file then it exports the PDF File by processing kPDFExportCmdBoss command.
But it does not retain trasparency in output PDF file.
    2. In this case it copies IPDFExportPrefs from  default settings and then it exports the PDF File by processing kPDFExportCmdBoss command.
But it retains trasparency in output PDF file.
We are not able to get exact flag that used to retain the transparency effect in PDF file.
So please help me to resolve this problem. This is very urgant.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Santosh Kadam.

I seem to have resolve this issue by setting compatibility option under Adobe PDF Preset.
We can set this option by using SetPDFExAcrobatCompatibilityLevel() under IPDFExportPrefs Interface.
In our case it was using IPDFExportPrefs::kPDFVersion13 from preset style file but it must have value  IPDFExportPrefs::kPDFVersion14 for InDesign CS4.
    Thanks,
    Santosh Kadam.

  • Why do my pdf files disappear when placing into Indesign CC?

I was working a late night rush project. When I came to the point of placing pdf files in my indesign CC document nothing worked. The first files showed up missing their header. They next file simply did not appear on the page. They previewed ok. The eventual work around was to place them in Indesign 5.5, an older program. Then they came in fine. I need to have an answer to why this happened. I was not placing the files from the cloud on somewhere on the internet but from my hard drive. I am getting very frustrated with this new CC application.

Try showing the import options and make sure the crop option you want to use is one that is not grayed out.

  • "Placing" linked PDF File in Illustrator for Markup Edits?

When I highlight text in a PDF file that is linked to an Illustrator file (PDF is "Placed" in the Illustrator file as a linked object), text highlights in the PDF file do not show up in Illustrator when I update the link.  Does anybody know why, or is there some setting or workaround to force the PDF markups to show up in Illustrator?
    Reason for Question
I often use Illustrator as a PDF editor because it is much more flexible than Acrobat's clunky editing tools.  There are some significant problems however.  If you open a PDF page in Illustrator, you lose some stuff like paragraph formatting, which Illustrator wants to left justify (same problem when opening an AutoCAD file in Illustrator).  You can also have trouble with missing fonts like Helvetica, which isn't a default system font because it is licensed and expensive.  Illustrator will swap the missing font out with a substitute so it can edit the text.  (Acrobat will do the same thing if you try to edit a font that isn't loaded in your system).
A workaround to maintain exact registration if I just want to mark up a PDF file (rather than changing the text) is to "Place" the PDF file in Illustrator.  When Placed, the file behaves like an object the isn't editable in Illustrator (you can edit a Placed object from Illustrator, but Illustrator will use the authoring application to do the edits, in this case, Acrobat).  I you are interested doing the same thing,... when I use Illustrator to mark up another file like PSD, JPG or PDF, I initially open the file in Illustrator to capture the dimensions, and then delete everything, and then "Place" the file back into Illustrator.  You can optionally link or embed the Placed object.  After Placing, I use the transform tool to move the Placed Object's upper left corner to 0,0 (XY Coordinates) to acquire registration, lock the layer, and do my markups on separate layers.
This procedure is a bit clunky and requires multiple construction files but Illustrator's vector tools are much better than the most of the markup tools (but not all) in Photoshop or Acrobat.  A Photoshop file will link to Illustrator, and you can export it back to Photoshop, but the Illustrator construction file will not be "linked" into Photoshop, so if you need to make changes with Illustrator you have a couple of options.  You can open the Illustrator smart object from Photoshop (Photoshop will launch Illustrator to do the edits), or you can delete the smart object and work on the Illustrator construction file directly and re-import.
Since you can't select the text of a Placed PDF file object in Illustrator to highlight text, I'd like to do some of the text highlighting in the linked Acrobat file upstream of Illustrator.  I should be able to bounce back and forth with both files open, the Illustrator construction file and the linked PDF file.  Problem is that when I add a highlight to the PDF file, it does not show up in the Illustrator placed object that is linked to the PDF file.
So back to my original question.  Does anybody know why PDF text highlights do not show up in Illustrator when the PDF file is placed as an object in Illustrator?  Is there a workaround to force the PDF text highlights to display in Illustrator?
FYI, I working on a business presentation and need to mark up a few pages of IRS publication 463, which is a 58 page PDF document with a bunch of "destination" links (10 to 20 links per page).  I can extract a page, do my markup edits, and then "replace" the page back into the original Acrobat file and all the links and bookmarks will still work, but registration is critical.
    I'm using CS6
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Mylenium, Thank you for your on-point explanation of why the markups don't import into Illustrator.  Based on your input, I did some digging and discovered:
I can export the Acrobat "Comments" (text highlights, but not markups?) to a FDF file
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS40A4853E-0D48-46a6-8AB6-6B9A27A22D83.html
and then optionally re-import them to another PDF, including a blank document (with the same dimensions to maintain registration) or the final output file.  I can then open the PDF (that contains the comments only) using Photoshop and save as a PSD file.  Photoshop captures the text highlight color graphic without the white background or text so I am able to achieve transparency.  I can then "Place" the Photoshop file as an object on its own layer in the Illustrator construction file as either an embed object or a linked object, but I tend to link for a number of workflow reasons.
Quite clunky, but it seems to maintain exact registration (although for some reason, whenever I place an object in either Illustrator or Photoshop I need to move (transform) the object corner to 0,0 because it is typically off by a pixel or 2).  Not sure if there is a way to also export PDF "Markups", but my objective was to use Acrobat's highlighting tools combined with Illustrator's vector graphic tools for markups, so even if I can only export the Acrobat text highlights and not the "Markups", I can still achieve my objective.
From a work flow perspective, I may optionally choose to use the text highlights only as a reference in the Illustrator construction file and turn them off when saving back to PDF.  I would then import the text highlights (FDF file) into the final PDF so they are actual Acrobat highlights rather than raster objects, but I do have the option.
I have also noted that I can print an Acrobat file to PDF to capture the text highlights, but that method introduces problems with registration and transparency (the white paper background).  I'll often print my final output to PDF rather than saving to achieve a small flat file that will render consistently on different computers, but in this case registration is important so it is better to save to PDF and live with the larger files size.
Why all the fuss?  Acrobat is good at highlighting text and Illustrator is good at drawing stuff like curvy paths with variable strokes.  Illustrator also has layers and stacking order control.  (Acrobat has clunky wannabe layers that are good for limited stuff like multiple versions, but not much help with graphic composition or stacking order).  I need workflows that can merge tools from multiple programs (Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Autocad, and Solidworks).  I could do my vector markups in Illustrator, then save to PDF and do the highlights in the final Acrobat file, but if I need to change the vector graphics later I would lose the highlights.  Doing the highlights in a separate PDF file and then exporting to a FDF file lets me make changes in Illustrator without having to recreate the highlights from scratch.
Thank you for your assistance.  If you have any additional suggestions I am always striving to improve my workflows.  btw, I've experimented with some of the 3rd party PDF editor's, but not the expensive ones (less than a few hundred dollars).  Most of them do a few things better than Acrobat, but they all have their shortcomings and I'm leery of investing my time in applications that might be obsolete in few years.  Perhaps this discussion is better suited to the Acrobat Forum, but I do a lot of PDF editing with Illustrator despite its limitations.

  • Links not passed to PDF file in RH7

I have 4 Webhelp projects that output to PDF files. RH7 is
supposed to retain hyperlinks in the PDF file and it did on the the
first volume I converted and compiled. But the second volume is not
retaining the links even though I have "Add links to PDF" and
"Retain hyperlinks" checked in the Print Documentation panel
checked. Once the PDF file is generated none of the links that
don't actually give the path work. In the first project all the
links between topics work fine...in this one they don't. Both
projects are similar age, created in RH5. This is straight text
(Compliance manuals) with nothing strange. The links were all
    created with drag/drop.
What am I missing? The first project 'just did it!". This one
"just doesn't!!". Thanks in advance for any help!!!
(this is also posted in the Other Single Source Layout
category...but no one seems to be posting there so I'm coming here
for help from all of you with all the answers!)

Good morning Leon! The second project is the same as the
first - straight text with links to other topics within the project
and links to external websites. In the first project the links to
other topics within itself work fine in the compiled PDF. In the
second project the same type of links - to other topics in the
project do NOT work in the compiled PDF. The 'little hand' never
becomes a 'pointed finger' that allows for the link. The links to
external sites only work if I actually display the full URL and
also make that URL a link within RH.
I've not yet converted the 3rd and 4th projects as I'd like
to make sure whatever has gone wrong in #2 is not carried forward
to #3 and #4. As I said in the first posting, these are simply
drag/drop links to other topics in the project - the output is
"print to PDF format" with "retain hyperlinks" marked. They simply
don't work and I have no idea why. Any help you can offer would be
    greatly appreciated.
