Retention Policy to delete both backup sets and archivelogs automatically
I configured the Recovery Window-Based Retention Policy for my database for the window=14 days. I also set up a crontab to do a full backup every Monday. So say in a month, there will be 30 archive logs and 4 full DB backup sets.
Now that I understand if the FRA gets filled up, older archive logs that are not needed for the 14 days recoverable window will be automatically deleted. My questions is what happen to the old backup sets? Will they get deleted automatically too if there is no space left in FRA? Or I need to use "DELETE OBSOLETE" to delete them?
Thanks.
One of the advantages of the FRA is, in case of space pressure obsolete objects (obsolete due to the defined retention policy) are deleted automatically. That's true for backups and archivelogs. The objects are NOT deleted automatically after the retention policy expires, but only when additional space is needed. That does not mean you don't have to care about FRA space consumption. You may have unusual amounts of archivelogs, additional backups and flashback logs (if flashback database is configured), which fill up the FRA.

Reg retention policy in Windows server Backup
Please let me know how long time the backups will be maintained in Windows server Backup.
Is there any place where I can go and modify the retention policy? The statements
"If the backup storage location is full, Windows Server Backup automatically deletes the oldest backup"
and
"If you do not delete the corresponding shadow copy, the backup sets will be always reserved."
are contradictory. As explained in the "Overview" section of the source you linked, the first statement is correct. It is not necessary that the server admin take any action to delete shadow copies in order to implement a retention
policy. When the backup destination drive gets full, WSB "automatically deletes the oldest backup version" (http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/22/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx)
This all said, this behavior and the source cited are for Windows Server 2008.
The automatic disk space management behavior seems to have changed in Server 2012 (for example see this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj614621.aspx). Unfortunately I've not been able to determine
specifically how it is different. -
Upon sync or backup, I receive the message, "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "iPhone name" because and error occurred. I have deleted my backup file and tried another computer, with no success. Also, the bluetooth function stopped working.
Hi, EJ13.
I see you are having issues with backing up you iPhone and have tried a couple troubleshooting steps. There are a couple more steps I could recommend in the article below.

Hello.
in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
I set settings:
in file syslog.conf:
*.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
in file /etc/security/audit_control:
dir:/var/audit
flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
minfree:20
naflags:lo
plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
in file /etc/security/audit_user:
root:lo,ad:no
Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
Where is the mistake? You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
And the fix is only available in S11.2.

How can delete his backup safety and totally?
My friends and I share a same time capsule ( 4th gen, 2TB), so if one day he leaves, how can delete his backup safety and totally?
Thank you for your nice recommandation of this aritle.
The reason I ask this question is becasue someome has a trouble when they want to delete the buckup directly to trash. They just can not clear the trash bin which make their Time Capsule capability still occupied by the trash file.
And the aritle says we can delete the backup by Finder directly. Just confused. -
I have CS5 production, and the Sb program, has an analog delay effect. I deleted the default setting, and it disappeared. Is there any way to re-install it?
Hi Thanks a ton.. so I downloaded Sb from Cs5 download options
and it won't take the serial number, from the box. I bought Cs5
in 2010 in the box from adobe. It lists Sb5 on the back
of the box, and it's in line, and works fine.. paid about 1000 dollars
for the software. But, the downloaded exe file will not accept the
serial number. The same serial number in my account for Cs5
production premium suite. I guess the new cloud community doesn't
respond well to BOX installers or previous customers. Thanks a lot for
your effort but, at 40$ a phone call, I'll suffer through without the default
analog delay option.. everything else runs smooth so.. have a nice
day up there in the cloud.

Retention policy for incremental cumulative backup question
Hi,
I have a production database configured with retention policy for 30 days window. No catalog is used.
The backup plan is:
Sunday - Level 0 backup.
Weekdays - Incremental 1 cumulative backup.
I also noticed that some archive logs since Mar 07 2010 has become obsolete in the recent few days.
Cannot figure out why the backup of Mar 07 2010 is going to be obsolete today.
Thanks for your help!

Hi All,
I've inherited and Exchange 2010 SP3 UR4 environment that has UM but no Retention Policy has been set. As a result, I have MP3s filling up disk space. Adding to that is that I'm a N00b when it comes to Exchange. I've more or less created
User and Room Mailboxes, etc.
This Retention Policy should address it:
New-RetentionPolicyTag "Voice Mail 60 Day Retention" -Type All -MessageClass voicemail -Comment "Untagged messages removed after 60 days." -RetentionEnabled $true -AgeLimitForRetention
60 -RetentionAction DeleteAndAllowRecovery
Thing is, just like any "set" cmdlet, I prefer to first query like everyone else with a "get" cmdlet.
Do you know if there's a way to query this first?
Thank you very much for your time,
Mr MisterYou mean you want to see if it actually works as expected? In that case I would create the policy and then apply only to one mailbox and see how that goes.

I had an external drive failure and had to buy a brand new drive. I was able to restore my info onto a new drive, about 1.5 TB of data. When I go to launch time machine now with the new drive connected and my backup connected, it treats the new drive as if it had different data and wants to create a whole new backup set when it should just append. How do I get around this?
I could just reformat the backup drive and start fresh again but would rather not do that if I can avoid it, just in case there were errors in copying etc.Hi
I should have been more clear, sorry. I work from a laptop. I have 2 external drives - one for my projects which failed but has since been replaced and restored from a backup. My 2nd external drive is the time machine backup drive.
When my project drive crashed, I bought a brand new drive and restored it using my time machine backup drive.
Now the data exists on 2 drives - the time machine backup drive, and the new drive. When I connect the backup drive now, it thinks my new drive has new data, probably since it is a new device/drive, and wants to do a brand new backup, when in fact the data already exists on that very drive. It shouldn't have to back up all 1.5 TB when nothing has changed!
Unless there is a way to tell time machine to simply append to the old backup, I think it will try and do a new backup (1.5 TB). I'm thinking maybe I should just initialize my time machine backup drive now and start over so it is only one backup set of 1.5 TB instead of (2) sets of 1.5 TB! -
Delete BOTH an event and To Do at the same time?
Just getting a handle on the To Do feature - which I've never really used. I looked into some of the other GTD apps but I don't really need anything that in-depth right now, and I can use iCal to easily sync with my Treo. Anyway ...
I read another post with the tip of dragging an event from the calendar into the To Do list - that way it adds a header above the item (ie. Yesterday, Today).
But when I delete either the To Do or the event, the other one is still there. I'm guessing ical just copied the event, and doesn't actually link it somehow. Just a bit of a PITA as I have to delete both.
Has anyone found a soluton for this? TIA.Ok let me clarify this, I got a internet connection, I got a router, Im having a problem with windows Vista when I boot up the computer its starting both the local area connection and the wireless connection at the same time, and when that happens it conflicts and cancels my internet connection, all the above suggestions I already have, done.
Im just wondering how do I setup the network so it won't conflict with the internet wireless connection and still keep the local connection alive on my home computers, or if I have to how do I shut off my local connection so that won't start up when I re-boot the computer or boot it from a cold start. Its not letting me shut down the Local Area connection when I boot with Vista, and giving me network errors!! GRRR!!

I deleted some backup folders and now i can't turn on backup
i thought i was cleaning up and deleted some backup folders. now when i click on time machine i don't have the option to turn on/off backups. if i attempt to access it via Finder it will not allow me or another networked computer connect.
Please explain what you mean by "backup folders".
Please update your "Profile" (under "My Stuff") to include the version of OS X you're using and the details of your hardware. The advice you need can sometimes depend on those details. -
How can I delete both an audio and video section of my video?
I am making a gaming video, so I kept the audio from the game and added live commentary that I did with my friend. I want to delete a section of the video and audio, but when I select the video, the audio from the commentary stays and instead it cuts off the ending audio. How do I fix this?
there's a simpler method, without leaving iMovie
(@AppleMan: I can still teach you tricks ) :
set your playhead where you want to split video+audio clip
click into the video (make it yellow bordered)
hit cmd-shift-S (Split)
tricky part: don't move the position of playhead, just select the green audio-bar underneath
hit cmd-shift-S again
repeat steps for OUT
=> the unwanted part is 'isolated', select clip, backspace, poof! erased, repeat for audio track
in FCPX: hit R (for range tool), select, erased, done ....
(I know, why I left iMovie 2y ago ..... ) -
Creating a cursor that returns both a set and a singleton
I have a situation where I have dozens of statically defined pl/sql cursors, along with result processing, where I'd like to modify the cursor definitions in such a way that they may be used to return either a single row or a set.
The effect would be to dynamically add a 'where xx.id = <variable>' predicate to the set oriented cursor to return a single row, but where if I say something (which I know I can't) like 'where xx.id = ANY', then the predicate is effectively ignored.
I don't want to use dynamic sql for performance reasons, and obviously I don't want to have replicate reams of queries and code.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?
Thanks, Jim
Edited by: 922615 on Mar 21, 2012 7:35 PMIt sounds like you just want
CURSOR cursor_name( p_id IN NUMBER )
IS SELECT *
FROM some_table
WHERE (p_id IS NULL or id = p_id );If you pass a NULL for p_id, you'll get every row back. If you pass a non-NULL ID, you'll get just the one row.

I went in and deleted my cookies and I closed my options and then went back in and one in particular was back. So, I completely closed FireFox, re-opened it and left it on the blank FireFox homepage. Then I went in and deleted said cookie again, but no matter how many times I delete it, it just re-appears. I am not going onto that website, it just wont go away.
