Retiming in secondary storyline......

When I try to retime in secondary storyline.....all the clips move forward with position as well as select tool......can I replace things when I drag a clip forward to retime....such that the position and length of the secondary storyline doesn't change....?

No. Retiming is going to change clip duration. You have decide how you want to retime and change content to maintain the same length. If you're working with music you can use beat times are add markers to reposition when you retime.

  • Secondary storyline issue in 10.0.6

    Hello.
I am having an issue that I don't remember happening in 10.0.5.
I want to move a clip in the secondary storyline while skimming through it in the process.
Normally this happens at the point where your playhead is.
However, since upgrading to 10.0.6, this has become an exercise in frustration because when I move the
clip, the viewer is showing me the footage that is in the primary storyline at the point where the clip in the secondary
storyline connects with the primary storyline.
Did something change?  Is there a setting that I am not seeing?
    Thanks.

I understand about the new playhead behavior but I don't think the issue I'm having is directly related to this new behavior.  If it is, it doesn't make any sense.
Let me see if I can explain better. (I've attached three images to illustrate.)
Let's say you have a gap followed by a video clip on the primary.  Then you add a video clip to the secondary right at the head of the video clip on the primary.  Once this is done, a connection point should have been made between the two clips (image 1 with connection point circled in red).
Ok, now, put the playhead over the gap so that you don't see anything on the viewer.  Now grab the video clip on the secondary and move it left.  Even though the playhead is on the gap and doesn't move, the second you start moving the clip the connection point starts acting like the playhead and in the viewer you will see whatever the connection point is moving over on the primary storyline.  If the connection point is over the gap, the view will be black (image 2).
If you move the secondary clip to the right until the connection point is over the video clip on the primary, you will start skimming that clip (image 3).
I don't remember this being the case before.  If I'm not mistaken, if the playhead was over a clip on the secondary and you moved the clip, the viewer would show you skimming through that clip at the point where the playhead was.
    I hope this makes sense.

  • Can't make a secondary storyline

I have a couple of clips and a secondary storyline
when I select all the clips along with that secondary storyline I don't get an option 'create secondary storyline' in right click
    sometimes I do,I couldn't figure out when.
Also is there a way to break apart a compound clip without loosing transitions.... ??

I would say compound clips do lose transitions -> if you have a secondary storyline in there.
I had this the other day, very frustrating, and no way out of it, I could see.
If a compound clip could break apart and create a secondary storyline on the outside (from the secondary storylie inside it) it would work. But it can't do that. So the transitions in your secondary storyline (in the compound clip) are toast if you want to break it apart.
I spent a good deal of time on the timing and type of transitions in my secondary storyline. But I had no choice to break the compound clip apart -> therefore no choice but to break apart the secondary storyline inside it -> which gave me no choice but to lose all the transitions.
    Not enough choices in there.

  • Secondary storyline weirdness

After converting a few video and stills to a secondary storyline and opening one of the still up in Photoshop, I cannot no longer scale or color correct any of the clips in the secondary storyline. They all scale up.
    1. All the images and video in the secondary scale up to some unknown scale. Looking at these clips and stills in the inspector shows normal parameters (100%) with no crop or distort.
    2. After the above, the clips are no longer able to take a color correction.
    3. Not all edits in the secondary storyline have transitionsm but some do. And sometimes after by removing one of the transitions the clips that were under the transition will let me scale and color correct.
I'm telling you this is really weird.

Here are before and after PS screenshots. All you can really see is scalling and cropping set to default. This secondary storyline has 3k still images. After opening this photo up in PS and saving, all the images in the storyline are zoomed in like this one. Definately a bug! Removing the transitions allows me to rescale manually, but with transitions no scaling or color correction is applied when changing paramerters.

  • Adding a Secondary Storyline

I am trying to sync 2 cameras using PluralEyes.  I have an A roll which is a few clips totaling about 50mins on the primary storyline.  I have the b camera clips spread out above the primary storyline.  They are conected and pretty close to being synsced.  PluralEyes didn't do to well on the first couple of attempts.  The A roll was split apart.  The instructions for PluralEyes recomends....If one device has several clips, select them in the Timeline and group them as a secondary storyline.
When I select all of the b roll clips I am not able to use create storyline under clips.  It's grayed out.  If I select just one clip ( the first one ) I can create a storyine and the first clip has sort of a gray bubble above it. If the first clip on that line is a stroryline are all of the following clips part of the new storyline?
Any insight would be much appreciated.

In the way of an update,  I tried making the A roll a compund clip, in an effort to keep  PluralEyes from putting a gap in it.  This resulted in an error when it exported from PluralEyes.
I guess I just need to figure put how to get the B roll clips into a secondary storyline.  Any Idea why I cna't sleect all of the B roll clips and make them a secondary storyline?
Unless there were software udates in the last week I have the latest versions of FCPX and Snow.

  • Transition in secondary storyline affects the entire screen

    Hi Everyone,
I don't know if this is a bug but it certainly troubles me a bit.
I found that if I have secondary story line which its size is reduced (like a picture in picture effect), the transition in the secondary storyline will affect the entire screen. For example, if there is a fade to black effect in the secondary storyline, I would like the fade to black to be only effective on the reduced picture in picture area. But now, the primary storyline footage (entire screen) will be affected.
    Any solution for this?
    Thanks.

pls post a screenshot of your timeline....
And.... Whenever you can, AVOID secondary story lines.... Avoiding those are equal to avoiding a grand case of bad mood ;-)

  • Connecting a title to the secondary storyline

I have the title connected to the primary storyline (at the end of it), but I want to connect it to the secondary one, because I want to end the primary before than the secondary, leaving untouched the title...
    How can I do?

  • I am getting quicktime error 50 when I attempt to export a retimed project in fcpx to youtube. I mix and match retime rates. I usaully have no issues. The entire project is retimed.

I am getting quicktime error 50 message when I try to share a project to youtube. I use retime frequently, mixing and matching rates with no issues. I am having trouble with this project. The entire project is retimed ( which  I have done before), it is four minutes and change in length. I used different rates, holds as well, and
secondary storylines ( retimed to match the primary clip rate ). Any suggestions would be helpfull, thank you.

    I figured it out:
FCPX does not support NTFS drives, even with Paragon NTFS working perfectly for everything else on the system.
I guess Apple (just) assumes that nobody will, or should, be using any other filesystem than Mac with FCPX.
I wasted hours looking for a solution, when a better error message besides a misleading "cannot allocate memory" could have been something more useful.
    Not impressed.

  • Retiming moves my audio clips

I am trying to make a movie to demonstrate some software at work.
So, I ran the software features I wanted to show using screen capture. Now I've got my video. Then I wrote a script and used the Record Audio tool to create a series of audio clips in sequence. These clips are often "attached" to various video clips in my timeline by some mysterious rule I haven't figured out.
What I want to do is use retiming to pause the video in various places while I wax eloquent in the audio. The problem is that as soon as I add another Hold section (Shift H), all of the previous audio clips move seemingly at random. They are all over the place. I can understand the audio clips that fall later in the timeline moving maybe, but not the ones earlier in the sequence that were all just fine.
I would like to detach the audio clips from the video clips so that whatever I do to the video, the audio just lays there not stretched, not moved, not anything.
    How do I do this?

While it took me a while to read up on secondary storylines, this is just what the doctor ordered. This has really taken the sport out of the whole thing.
    I'm in your debt forever!
    Thank you.
For those that don't know, to create a secondary storyline, you just select a number of clips (video or audio), then right click and choose "Create Storyline". Now both clips are embedded into a gray box. And all of the relative positions within this storyline stay fixed no matter what happens outside.

  • How do I insert a clip into my Primary Storyline?  Every time I try to insert a clip the way instructions say, it goes into the title storyline (at top) instead.

I have been unable to find out how to select the storyline where I want a clip inserted.  Every time I try to insert a clip at the beginning of my project, it goes into the Title Storyline, not my primary one.

What does the instruction say? Are you pressing the Insert button? Are you using the W key? Are you tryin to drag into the storyline?
If you have a secondary storyline, make sure it's not selected when you do the edit.

  • Replace clip on primary storyline with connected clip?

    Hi!
Is it possible to replace a clip on the primary storyline with a connected clip?
A possible scenario where this would be useful is if you want your recorded voiceover on the primary storyline. If you have a blank clip where the voiceover goes and put the b-roll on a secondary storyline connected to the blank clip, it would be easy to just drag the recorded voiceover on to the blank clip to replace it.
Any idea if this works? I think I have tried dragging with all the modifiers...
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
One scenario I often have is that I work in parallel with the reporter writing the voiceover. I usually put down the b-roll while he writes it to save time. Thats why I would leave a gap for the VO.
I could always leave the b-roll on the primary storyline and have the VO connected, but to me it makes sense to use the primary storyline for voiceover and sync to take advantage of the magnetic timeline.
Overwrite to Primary Storyline doesn't really work for this since it overwrites instead of replace, so if the VO is longer than the empty clip you end up overwriting your next clip too.

  • Moving clips to Secondary time line

I've created a compound clip When I open it up my primary video is on the secondary story line. Primary audio and a wide shot is on the primary story line.
What' the easiest way to lift the Wide Shot to cover primary video as a relief shot.No longer than 5 seconds.I've been using cut a paste but the clip always slides into the primary story line and I move it above the secondary time line.Is there a shortcut?

Do you mean Secondary Storyline, or Connected Ciips?  The simple act of creating a Compuond Clip only creates a Primary Storyline with Connected Cliips, unless you started with a Secondary Storyline.
Highlight a clip, or multiple clips at once, right-click, "Lift From Primary Storyline".   They will become Connected Cips, and replace in the Storyline with Gap Clips.

  • Transitions above primary storyline

I've created a video to explain the problem:
    http://youtu.be/xWlyLQtBAJ4
I've tried to find solutions online, but it seems like it's just the way FCPX works now. I just wanted to give one last try to be sure.
The problem is that when you add a secondary storyline or compound clip "above" the primary storyline and then add a transition to the beginning and end, the transition affects the primary storyline and not just the secondary storyline or compound clip.
The steps I use to get around this are way more work than the previous version of FCP, so I'm really hoping there's a better way or that Apple fixes this terrible workflow.
    1. Make compound clip for content going above primary storyline
    2. Double click to get inside compoound clip
    3. Add transitions
    4. Right click on transitions and turn off "Transition to/from black"
That's a lot of work for something so simple! Is there a better way?

For Transitions over the storyline, most of them will need to transition into a slug rather than be "open ended" in order to work as  you would expect it to. If you add a slug adjacent to a clip over the storyline and then add a transition, FCPX will automatically convert it to a secondary storyline.
You can create a slug in Motion by opening a New Generator project and saving it as "Slug" to a category of your choice. There is nothing further that needs to be done. You could elect to Export the Motion Project to create an actual "empty" video...
If you don't have Motion and don't have a slug, you can download one here:

  • Lock Audio Levels of a Storyline

I'm working on a Project where a woman is describing several processes/instructions on how to do things (like assemble a small box for a book cover).
She pauses often mid sentence (English is her second language).  It's really bad, a 3-5 sentence ends up being 10+ because she pauses for 2-3 seconds after every 2-3 words. (often times it's because she can't say what she is doing & actually show it at the same time).
So, I need to delete/remove the audio pauses & then match it to the video (basically remove the some video from when she is talking)
I Detached the audio & then made it into a Secondary Storyline.   I then select a range (using the waveform of the audio to delete the pause)
The only problem is that 50% of the time the audio levels change when I drag & drop the range (IE the horizontal line for the audio track changes levels with the drag).
Is there a way to keep the Audio waveform but remove the built in audio level adjustment?  Can it be turned off?

Huh?  I don't want to adjust the audio level in the any clip(s).
The photo above was to show the audio level adjustment feature found in a clip on the timeline.
I'd already edited out the pauses in that timeline.
Each demo I'm editing are single take multicams (2-3 cameras) that range from 5-30 minutes long (sometimes there are more than 1 take but I simply incorporate each take into a single multicam.
Here is another picture of my next edit.
I don't want to adjust levels & there are no adjacent clips.
I simply want to remove anywhere from 20 frames to 4 seconds of dead audio
    When it works correctly:
I turn range selector on, I then click & drag to create a range (see pic).  Then hit delete. Repeat.
    When it works incorrectly:
I turn range selector on, I then try to click & drag to create a range, however a range isn't created, the audio of the entire clip is adjusted. Obviously because the mouse was over audio adjustment feature of the clip.    I want to turn that feature off/lock the audio levels so they can't be adjusted.
I should also point out that the in the photo, the timeline has been magnified for visual purposes.

  • Independent Storyline's for video installation with two projections

    Hi Community,
I work on a project where I wish to have two videos played on two different Projectors.
During the process of making them I wish to synchronize them and finaly make two different independent exports from them (somehow like two synchronized Projects)
Any ideas how to do that. I thought about something like independet Storylines. Like that I could make both video-sequences in one project and synchronize them in the timeline and treat them at the end like two independent movies (projects). How can I do that?
Thanks a lot for any answer!

Create the first edit in the Primary Storyline.
Create the second monitor edit in a Secondary Storyline above it.
Select the first clip of the Primary Storyline, resize to 50%, move to the bottom right corner, copy that clip.
Paste Attributes to the rest of the clips in the Primary Storyline for size and position.
Do the same for the Secondary Storyline, except move it to the top left.
Select the first clip in the Prim Storyline, shift-click the last clip, assign the Video role of "Projector 1".
Select the first clip in the Secondary Storyline, shift-click the last clip, assign the Video role of "Projector 2".
When done with the full edit, slect all and reset the Transform section in the Inspector.
Export each Role seperately for each projector.
