Retina display: 13 ins or 15 ins macbook?

With the educational discount, similarly specced 13in and 15 in Macbook Retinas are the same price; I prefer the smaller footprint of the 13in, but wonder whether the quad processors, larger battery, and potenatial for upgrades would make the 15 in a better buy.
I travel quite a lot, and don't game much, but the machine would be used a lot. I've also noticed that my current 13in MBP (2009) gets quite warm in use, don't know whether the larger processors working 'quietly' would be better than the dual core working their little socks off
Any informed opinions?
Thanks
Fax

My sense from the little I have seen is that nothing will be upgradeable on the 13 in (the order form even states you should think carefully about RAM as well as Flash memory, as once it's done, it's done), but am I right in thinking that most things are upgradable on the 15in?
I assume, BTW, that even on the 13in, one could replace the battery once it's packed up (assuming one keeps it so long). My three year old 13in MBP now only lasts about two-three hours on battery alone...
Like you, I'd prefer to see the reviews before deciding; my constraint in the educational pricing, which would save my up to 20% over retail (the three year warranty is a lot cheaper through Universities, for some reason).

  • Macbook pro Late 2013 retina display battery questions and issues

    Hi,
So I was a bit suspicious about my macbook pro 2013 13 inch retina display models battery, its the latest macbook pro 13 inch. The website says that it will last for 9 hours but mines lasted for only 6.19 hours. All the apps I used were probably Xcode (doing coding projects), Photoshop, Safari and Notes. I did keep the brightness high and also had bluetooth on for a while. Is this a good battery life for my mac or should I go back to the Apple Store and tell them to fix my battery?
I have all the battery logs below:
    Standby Time: 1:13 PM

I wasn't using it for one day straight by the way, I used it for 2 days without charging with these logs.

    Fayk1,
carefully review that Web site’s claim; under what conditions does it claim that a charge would last for up to nine hours? (Note those key words — “up to”.) Did your conditions exactly match those conditions? If you want a charge to last as long as possible, then make the display as dim as you can stand it, and minimize your use of Bluetooth and energy-hungry apps like Photoshop and Xcode compilers. To maximize the battery’s life, start recharging it when it gets down to 20%.

  • Keep Macbook Pro w/Retina Display?

So I recently went out and purchased (not even a week ago) a Mid Tier, Mid 2014
Macbook Pro with retina Display 13' because of my previous Macbook Pro 13, mid 2012
base model had reached the end of its life cycle.
Or so I thought. I mustered up the courage and took it in to the local Apple Store to get it
check out since it had display issues,  and they ran their test said it was fixable,
so I took the leap and had it repaired.A few days later it turns out they repaired a the logic board,
plus the HDD, and the display at no extra cost. So old machine is back to working condition
Now that I have the old machine back in my possession, I'm not sure if they new
Macbook Pro w/retina display was worth the buy since they old one is fixed.
So would it be wise to keep the older one, and return the newer one.
Or just keep the new one and sell the other one since problems could always arrive after
    the 90 warranty period?

I would keep the Retina display model and sell the older one.

  • My Macbook Pro 15" with Retina Display did not come with an "iWorks" app.

As I read the specification of my Macbook Pro 15" with Retina display, my laptop, it states that Macbook Pro 15" with Retina Display comes with Pages, Keynotes, and Numbers, app for free along with "iLife" apps. But Apparently my laptop didn't come with "iWork". Is there anyway I can I get it for free, or should I buy it in app store to have it?

    Hi Astronap,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
iWork applications for Mac including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the Mac App Store for qualifying Mac computers. The specific information from the articles I have pulled out for you, but is located in the smaller print toward the bottom of the article.
    Apple - Pages for Mac
Pages is free on the Mac App Store for qualifying Mac computers purchased on or after October 1, 2013. OS X Yosemite required. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.
    Cheers,
    Joe

  • High end MBP 15" or low end MBP with retina display?

I am having trouble deciding between the two laptops so I wanted to get some opinions.
I use photoshop and dreamweaver a lot. I ususally will have tons of applications/tabs open at the same time, including a lot of pages with different video players. I use iMovie at most once per month. I do like to plug in multiple displays through the thunderbolt ports so having 2 and an hdmi port would be nice. It mainly comes down to is the macbook pro with retina worth losing .3Ghz per core on the retina. To fix the memory (not RAM) I figured when necessary I would just get a thunderbolt external hard drive. And finally how much more space would the OSX and/or a program take up with so many more pixels. I also need this computer to last a while because I will most likely have to wait more than 4 years to update, but I can upgrade the ram of the mbp with retina display later to 16gb, but the macbook pro 15 has a 3.6ghz processor. Once again if i need more space I will just get a thunderbolt external drive. So could I please have some oppinions on what I should chose?

Even my 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM.  I would be VERY surprised if the 2012 model cannot handle 16 GB RAM once macsales.com and crucial.com test enough of the available RAM types to find the most-compatible type.  Apple advertises limitations based on testing with "commonly available" parts.  2x8 GB RAM chips are still around $150, so Apple probably did not test them.  But only time (and those willing to test with their brand-new units) will prove that.
As to the actual increase is speed from the extra 0.3, I would not hazard a guess because you will run a very specific set of software under a very specific CPU and GPU (graphics processing unit) load.  But I would suspect the Retina unit will run faster than the non-Retina IF you buy a non-Retina with a HDD instead of the SDD.  SDD will outperform HDD in most cases.
My humple opinion, Retina units are lighter and lack utility ports.  But they have the quad-core CPUs people want and more display-ports.  Those who program computers will likely buy the non-Retina units.  Those who play with pictures will buy the Retina units.

  • How do I downgrade my MacBook Pro Retina Display from Mountain Lion to Lion?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro Retina Display that came with OS X 10.8.1.
I´m an audio engineer so I work with Pro Tools, tons of plug-ins etc... Some of my software doesn't work with Mountain Lion just yet. Some of them haven't upgraded, and some of them I need to purchase a latest version, which is not cheap at all in the audio world. So I'd like to hang on to Lion for a while until I decide to upgrade everything to Mountain Lion.
I've seen other posts about this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4148927?start=0&tstart=0
This one in particular managed to make the downgrade. However, he used to have OS X 10.7.4 in his retina display when he bought it. Which is something that doesn't happen in my case.
If you read the other post you can see that several methods have been tried.
Is it really safe to completely erase my hard drive and to a clean install of Lion? Will it work perfectly fine on my Retina Display?
I went to one Apple Store, and the guy asked around and told me they haven't done it before, so since they didn't know whether it was going to work they couldn't do it. He told me to do it myself and if something happened to my laptop, "just bring it in and we'll reinstall the stock OS X again."
Since the laptop is brand new I don't mind erasing everything, all my stuff is already backed up.
    So help me please?

The short of it is if it came with 10.8.1 you can't install an OS less than that.

  • Facetime and iMessage on Macbook Pro Retina display slow after Yosemite 10.10.3 Update

    Hi
I recently updated my Macbook Pro Retina display to Yosemite 10.10.3 update. I see that the Facetime and iMessage has become relatively very slow. Like for example when someone calls on my phone it takes like more than 15 seconds + to show up on my macbook. Earlier it used to be like instant!
I started seeing this problem on Yosemite 10.10.3 update only. Also the same is the story with iMessage. When I get an SMS or an iMessage from my friends it takes like a good 30 seconds + to show up on my macbook pro.
Just for your information, this is the version of macbook i am using
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    251GB Flash storage
As Suggested by someone I also tried RESETTING my computer's PRAM. That didn't seem to help either. Can anyone help. If it is a genuine bug in Apple Yosemite, I'd like to file a bug in the community.
    Regards
    Shreyas

  • Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro with Retina Display?

Hi I am an architect, I just bought a new Macbook Pro on January. I was wondering if there is a way of upgrading it or changing it for the new Retina display version?

Yes you can certainly get the new model. There is nothing stoppiing you from doing that.
Just sell your current MBP and then take that money and the extra needed and buy one of the new models.
Not sure why people keep posting this type of question.
You could also keep your current model and buy the new one. No one at the store will say "Don't you already own a MBP, so you can't buy a new one".
By the way Apple stores do not take trade ins. It is not a car dealership.

  • Macbook Pro vs Macbook Pro with retina display

    Hi,
I'm getting a new laptop in december and I'm trying to figure out wich one I should buy. Here are my two options:
    Macbook Pro (non retina)
2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
    And
    Macbook Pro (with retina)
2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    256GB Flash Storage
I use a ableton live and logic (a lot) with many plug-ins and final cut for some basic video editing. I was wondering if the processor is good enough and if the RAM is gonna be a factor.
I also heard that having only one stick of ram is not as good as having two.
The hard drive is not really an issue because I keep most of my stuff in external hard drives.
    Thanks a lot.

In reality the Retina display isn't that really noticeably better than  a high resolution display, we compared them side by side ourselves.
The difference is the non-Retina has a anti-glare option, uses less power, can be upgraded by the user later, can play cd/dvd's, the optical drive replaced with another drive for more storage, more RAM added and first and foremost, runs a heck of a lot cooler and has no screen image issues like the Retina displays have.
If you search these forums and online, you'll see what I mean about these Retina displays, ghosting, spots etc. apparently a problem with LG Retina displays and Apple is in competition with Sam Sung but they make the better Retina displays.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034848
So you won't know what you'll get in the box, but you can find out.

  • Can you install Windows 8.1 Pro using Parallels on a new MacBook Pro without retina display?

I am starting a graduate school program and I would like to purchase a MacBook Pro. The options for the non-retina display fit my needs best, but it sounds like the resolution requirements for Windows 8.1 Pro do not match the MacBook Pro without retina. I need Windows to run a statistics program (SAS) and ArcGIS for mapping. Any thoughts or experience installing Windows 8.1 Pro on MBP without retina?

The native res on my 13-inch non-Retina is 1280x800. You might check with Parallels support or their forums to see if this is a problem.
If you go with the non-Retina 13-inch, I'd recommend getting 8GB RAM (standard is 4GB) because Win emulators need a fair bit of memory.

  • Photoshop resolution on Macbook Pro 15" Retina display too small

I've just bought a Macbook Pro 15" and I'm trying to use Photoshop, but the resolution its displaying the images at for 100% are too small. I have to design for the web, so need to be intricate with detail, but I'm finding it adjusts the resolution of the image right down. (I mean you can see the image clearly, but it's too small to edit). When I look at Safari and see a web page at 100% it's clear, but the same page displayed in Photoshop CC appears 50% of the size (even though it says it's 100%)
If I move the application window to another screen it adjusts it correctly  – leaving all the pallettes, menus and tools correctly sized as they are on the retina display
Is there some way to adjust the way Photoshop CC displays images so it is more consistent with what you actually see?
There doesn't seem to be any answer on the Adobe forum, so hopefully someone here can shed some light.

    quaetapo wrote:
Well that certainly helps in terms of making the image larger – only problem is with the low resolution there's a loss of clarity and pixelisation of the image; so not the same level of quality...
In System Preferences/Display, what resolution do you have your screen set to? Try changing that also to see if the two settings can work together. Also, since the vast majority of users (Mac or PC) don't have Retina Displays, isn't what you're seeing with Low Resolution checked in Photoshop closer to what most people will see? Remember that Apple's software, such as Safari, have been upgraded to take full advantage of the rMBP display; most other browsers, especially in Windows, haven't.
And if you want to tinker with the rMBP's resolution even further, check out "Eye-Friendly" in the App Store.

  • How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display?

How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display? When I click Get Info, the "Open in Low Resolution" box is marked and locked. How can I unmark this box? I currently run 10.9.1. I can open Adobe Photoshop CS6 in high resolution without any problem. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no such thing. In CS6 only PS itself is Retina compatible. You would have to use CC for full Retina support.

When I click mirroring to turn it on, teh Apple TV screen goes blank (from its home setting)
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi!
I figured it out! It was a firewall issue.
I use Handsoff and I checked it before i wrote here. There was no "user defined rule" that denied the communication but when i changed to "All rules" the program displayed several rules regarding AppleTV and its IP.
So if anybody has the same problem make sure you see all rules of your firewall and get rid of the AppleTV related rules generated by the program itself. You dont need to update to the latest iOS on the AppleTV!
I hope that I can help some people with this info to fix the problem.
