Retina iphoto library too large

When I tranferred my iphoto library from my old macbook pro to a new retina macbook pro, the size went from 56gb to 113 gb without adding any new files. I also lost my albums?  What happened?  Any idea how to preserve the albums and not have the size double?

iPhoto Diet - or any application that makes changes in the iPhoto Library Folder - is not recommended and not supported.
iPhoto uses the best principles of Digital Asset Management - it preserves your original file and all operations are executed on a copy of that file. This is basic version control. There is no way to defeat this and attempting to can damage your library and even lead to data loss - that is, losing your pictures.
If you don't require version control, simply, your best bet is to use a different application.
If disk space is an issue you can run an entire library from an external disk
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you sync your library with an iPod or Mobile phone be aware that this creates a large cache inside the iPhoto Library. In my case this accounts for almost 15 gigs of my 48 gig library. The iPhoto Window reports that my library of photos is 22 gigs.

  • Iphoto library too large

So, I'm uising iPhoto for my home photography and Aperture for my professional stuff.  My iPhoto library is over 200GB.  My entire internal HDD is 500GB.  My HDD is getting too full.  I could just move my iphoto library to an exrternal HDD, but then it won't get backed up with the rest of my HDD.  I do have a lot of RAW files that probably don't need to be RAW, but exporting them to JPG and then reimporting them into iPhoto will only buy me a little bit of time until I fill it up again.
So how does one handle having a HUGE iPhoto library when I want to keep it backed up?  Is my only option to get a larger internal HDD?

    several options
    Get a larger internal HD
move the library to an external drive (of course it can be backed up - any backup prpogram you are using can I'm sure backup from  multiple volumes)

  • ITunes library too large

When connecting MBP to Apple TV prompt appears "iTunes library too large"

    iTunes prefs -> Advvanced.
SEt the iTunes library to a new drive.
It will still use the songs in the old location but new stuff will go to the new location.

  • Library too large error.

I was running tight on space on both my library and vault drives, so I referenced a bunch of masters to a third drive. The library drive now has plenty of space and the application has actually sped up. However, I'm not able to back up the vault. The drives are the same size and I'm getting a Library too large error message for the vault drive. Is there a trick I'm missing, or do I need to delete and recreate the vault?
    Thanks for the help!

OneDrive for Business/SkyDrive Pro has a 5000 item limit per Library. There is no workaround, other than reducing the number of items.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • Library too large

I use photos professionally but my Aperture Library is now becoming too large for my Hard-drive on my Macbook Air.  I need to be able to take my Macbook with me at times to work on these photos.  What's the best way for me to do this?  I also have this library backed up to a vault on the same hard drive which seems silly.  What's the best way for me to manage things without losing the functionality to work on the photos within a single library?  I thought about splitting things into multiple libraries but then if I have a recent photo that belongs with an old photo and should reside within the same project.

Get a large, fast external drive and put your library there, and bring it with you. Also have an up-to-date backup that you leave back at your home or office.

  • IPhoto library too small?

Trying to transfer iPhoto library 09.  To external harddrive.  The file transfer goes fast and the size is 237mb.  That seems MUCH too small for  the amount of photos that I have.  How do I make sure everything is ok?
2 years ago I got a MacBook Air with newer iPhoto which took a copy of iPhoto library converted it to lion and that file is 65 gb.  Since then there has been more added to the old iPhoto 09 library so I don't understand how it can be less than 1gb even with compression.
    Please help

What size is the iPhoto library on your main disk before transfering it? Yes 237 MB is very small - but with nno actually information about what you are doing (lots of information about things that have no bering on the question) it is impossibel to tell
the correct way to transfer an iPhoto library is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Photos library too large

Photos is telling me I cannot import anything as my library is too large.  I want to split the library up, but I cannot add a second library to the new Photos for OS X app.  Nothing happens when opening the app while holding down "option".
    Thanks

Photos can handle up to 1 million image files.  How much free space do you have on the drive where your Photos Library is located?

  • Aperture crashing - Library too large?

It would be greatly appreciated if someone can give me a few suggestions. I've been editing a wedding in Aperture for about 4 hours when suddenly aperture crashed. Every time I reopen, it opens and looks like it is processing previews and then crashes within 5 seconds. I have run a consistency check and rebuilt the library to no avail.
I am afraid my library has gotten too large and could be contributing to the problem. The library currently weighs in at 139GB. I typically try to keep the library size below 50GB but have been too busy to clean up my system recently. Stupid me. Could this be the problem, and if so, how do I manage my files if I can't open aperture?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Thanks to everyone for all the help. After speaking with someone at apple, I had to copy my library to an external drive, restore to a new library, check to make sure all the images were there, and then I was able to delete the backup copy. One issue I encountered was that a few thumbnails wouldn't load. After some exploration I found that these were referenced files that had been moved from there original locations and not reconnected with aperture. After relocating the original files, everything works perfectly.
Aside from this being a huge waist of time, everything worked out okay.

  • Updated now library too large

I just updated to the newest iphone os last night and now the library (photos, music, contacts, apps etc.) is 2.8gigs too large! How did that happen and how can I undo whatever happened? The phone can't complete the sync now, it locks up itunes. Is restore the only option?

Get a large, fast external drive and put your library there, and bring it with you. Also have an up-to-date backup that you leave back at your home or office.

  • My Mac's iPhoto library is larger than my iPad's photo library, despite containing the same photos???

    Hello everyone.
My iPhoto library is 22.91gb when shown in finder, and 13.8gb when shown in the iPhoto window inside iPhoto.  There are 4665 photos.  I understand why there's a difference - that's not my question.
What is confusing me is that when I sync my MacBook and my iPad, on itunes I select to sync ALL my photos from iPhoto to my iPad.  However, on my iPad they take up only 6.66gb of space, with a total of 5670 photos on the iPad (duplicates within albums, recently deleted folder and camera roll I guess).
4665 photos on mac - 22.91gb (13.8 in real terms)
    5670 photos on ipad - 6.66gb
What's going on? The quality doesn't seem reduced on the ipad at all.  I only have a little 120gb macbook air hard drive so could really do with extra space.
    thanks very much

Syncing with iTunes will store only smaller versions on your iPad, not the full sized originals, so the storage required will be less.
But the syncing will also create a cache inside the iPhoto Library with the optimised versions and require additional space on your Mac, see:  iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder

  • IPhoto library too big -- how do I sort video, size to remove/archive?

Okay folks. So my iphoto library has gotten so big, I can't even install updates on my MacBook. Normally with any files on my computer, I can sort by size...see who's hogging up space and what I don't need. Not only can I not sort by size, I really have no way of managing these files in finder.
    Advice?
Saw previous posts about "no sort by size". Someone even said "iPhoto is a photo manager, not a file manager" -- cute, but at some point the space runs out.

I really have no way of managing these files in finder.
It is strongly recommended that you do not use the finder to delete, move or otherwise modify any files within the iPhoto library - doing so risks corrupting your library and losing data
If you want to delete anything in the iPhoto library you must us the iPhoto program to do it
To identify your movies you can make a smart album for all items with the keyword = movie - selecting one and looking in the information window at the lower left hand corner will show you its size

  • ITunes Library too large - options

    Hi there
I'm looking for some suggestions to help me free up some much needed space on my MacBook.  I have a MacBook Pro Retina with 512GB with a 64GB Nifty Minidrive but I'm running out of space.  My iTunes library is taking up over 330GB in music alone (it's mainly music and some apps as I don't have too many videos).
I've done some reading on the web and as far as I can tell I have 3 main options:
Move the entire library to an external drive
I've done this before (many years ago) and I recall having permanent issues with files if I accidentally tried to access the file if drive not available.  Also, I'd like to have at least some of my content with me (i.e. I don't want to have to carry an external drive with me all the time or have to have web access to listen or transfer media)
Move part of the library to an external drive
I think this is my preferred option.  I've read several articles about people moving their video content on to an external drive.  Unfortunately for me I don't have much video content so I would be looking to move some of my audio content away.  I was thinking of moving the compilations (currently 130GB) but I don't know how this will work should I choose to add a compilation album later?  I presume I would have to add to iTunes and then manually move it across to the external drive.  I'm thinking things could get messy!
Create a second library, located on an external drive
This is a bit like option 2 but from what I can tell it means you can no longer have music from both libraries on the same iDevice.  Is that correct?  It also has the pitfalls of having to maintain the two locations so I've discounted this unless anyone can see why this is a good option.
I'd like to hear your comments to the above or any additional suggestions you might have.  I don't want to buy a new Mac just yet (will definitely get a much larger drive next time).  Just so you know, I have Amazon Cloudplayer but as I'm in the UK I can't access this from the Mac app (can access via web and iDevices though).  I have around 50,000 tracks so iTunes Match and Google Play aren't viable options for me.  I have Dropbox but I only use this for documents and photo backup.  I also have 2 x WD My Cloud network drives at home for backup, remote access and for my Sonos system.    Thanks.

    Spotty comments/observations:
If adding an item to iTunes, hold down the option key while dragging the item to iTunes.  It will leave the item in its original location.
I have multiple libraries (mostly for testing).  However, I manage my own media.  One potential issue with multiple libraries is if you use iTunes "copy media to media folder" checked (default setting) and you have one library on the external and the other on the internal drive, iTunes still only uses the same set of preferences settings.  In other words, your media for one library end up going to the wrong place.  Of course you can do as I do which is manage my own media, but that's something to consider.  To be honest, I don't know what happens if you leave "copy to" unchecked but "organize" checked.  I have always from day one had both unchecked.  It puts the onus of managing media on me but it also means I can have media wherever I like.
Yes, iTunes has conniptions when an item on an external is disconnected.  However, it is usually relatively easy to remedy the situation by quitting iTunes, turning the device on, then starting iTunes again.  If your whole library is on an external drive and iTunes defaults back to the internal drive, start iTunes with the option key held down and point it to the external.
Look into iTunes Match for travel use.  However, with 300 GB of music that may mean you have more than 25,000 tracks.  I guess Apple figures not many people can afford $100,000 of music (or even $10,000 if it's in lossless files) and don't accommodate for that in Match.

  • Library too Large for Vault?

I just bought an iMac 27" with Mavericks.  I was on an iMac running Snow Leopard and Aperture 3.2.4.  I used Migration Assistant to move everything over and updated to Aperture 3.5.1.  My Aperture Library is 550 GB (40,000 images).  Now I can't use Vault!  Every time I try (to two different external drives), it stalls and when I look I see that Aperture is not responding.  I've let it go for hours but eventually have to Force Quit.  When I look at the Vault file, it has about 33 GB in it.
The Apple Pro support people suggested that the problem could have to do with the size of my library.  Indeed, we created a very small library and it saved to Vault without difficulty.   However, I'm not wild about dividing my library and it seems odd to me that I'm having this problem now when I didn't have it with Snow Leopard and Aperture 3.2.4.
Anyone else having this problem?  Thoughts?
    Thanks!

I have found that Aperture Vaults (at least up to 100 GB) will transfer reasonably quickly to a direct connected drive.  The same is not true of transferring Vaults past about 20 GB to a network drive (to be clear - a drive that is not direct connected by wire and which is accessed by Wi-Fi).  Transfer to these network drives of vaults over 20 GB can take hours to days (if at all successful) - what is daunting is Aperture reports it is working (Status Bar and activity report in bottom left corner) but Aperture is locked up from any furthur activity and Force Quit Panel reports Aperture as not responding.  In this state, I have had files still transfer after lengthy intervals although after a couple of days I usually give up. Force Quit is the only way out.  Do this once or twice and you get the message that you need to rebuild your database.  I have found that rebuilding the database does help and speed up the transfer to a Network drive so long as you are in the under 50 GB size.  It does not seem to have any impact on larger vaults.
I have split up my big vault into smaller vaults by category and this has helped somewhat but you now have all these vaults which can be a pain.  I still have some larger vaults and these continue to be problematic for the Network drive.
I have a late model iMac and all my drive and Network Drives are Western Digital with all the latest software and firmware (as of April 2014).

  • ITunes library too large? (Video and Audio)

    iTunes 11.3.1
    Apple TV 3 iOS 6.2 (6698.99.50.31)
My iTunes library is very close to filling my 3TB external HDD. It includes music, TV Shows, Movies, podcasts, etc. I have 3 main problems.
The most annoying is when something is wrong with my internet, it takes forever to start streaming TV Shows and Movies. Up to 5 minutes to begin or more. With music files, it starts immediately. This is all taking place on my home network. My server is a Mac mini and it is sitting less than 4 feet from the Apple TV 3. When the internet is functioning fine, however, streaming usually begins within a few seconds. Nothing changes with the local network, only the connection to the internet. This should not affect streaming from iTunes to the Apple TV, but it does.
Updating metadata is a royal pain. Sometimes (and there seems to be no pattern), updating metadata takes 5-10 minutes per file, and if the track (on a playlist) changes during this process, the next file will not start streaming until the metadata finally finishes writing. This happens whether or not an image is included in the metadata change. Sometimes, it changes right away. It's maddening when I'm doing it because I have to stop what people in the household are watching to get it going again by force quitting iTunes.
The video library, especially the movie library, has gotten to where it only sporadically shows the artwork in the iTunes library. If it doesn't show up there, there is a very good chance that it doesn't show up in the Apple TV as well. If I leave iTunes alone than the artwork for the movies on the screen eventually show up, but it might take hours. Then the next time I go in and look, it has lost much of the artwork for the movies again. However, Get Info shows the artwork is actually still there, as does third party metadata tag editors. The artwork is there, but it will not show up on about half of the movie library, and it isn't always the same movies.
These problems seem to be happening more and more the larger the library grows. I have thought about making multiple libraries, however, all libraries need to remain online so the Apple TV can access them all. If this is the problem causing the above issues, the only thing I know to do is to divide the library into multiples and run them all on different.
Now, this machine also runs OS X Server, with the File Sharing, DHCP and DNS servers all running. If this isn't a result of the almost 3TB library size, could it be that the machine is overloaded?
Thanks for your help and advice in advance,
    Scott
