Retina Macbook Pro Freezes after sleeping...

Hello, I just purchased a brand new macbook pro retina (13inch) base model. Its been really annoying to have to force shut down the computer almost everytime it has been asleep for a while and I open the computer to type in my password. Everything is up to date and I have no idea what is causing this. I wouold love to find out if there is anything I can do before I return my Retina Macbook Pro. Anyone's help would be super awesome. Thank you!

Hi,
I have a late 2012 13 inch Retina and have exactly the same problem since the last EFI V1.1 update. This update is supposed to enhance performances during sleep, but now the MacBook is hotter in sleep than in wake!
Before the update, there where no sleep problem, but now
Hop Apple's guy will see this post, if not I’ll call support next week.
Regards.

• Macbook pro freezes after sleep, after 6 months of not having that problem

Hello,
I'm really frustated with my macbook pro. Like the tittle says, my computer freezes after waking up and the only thing to do is use the On/Off button. It is a macbook pro '13 2010.
This problem first happened around 6 months ago. Around Feb '11, i experienced the same issue. First thing i noticed was that the wifi suddenly stopped working. To try to fix it, I turned airport off and then couldn't turn it back on and had to restart my machine. Then when closing the lid and then opening it again, my computer would work for about 5 min and then freeze. Nothing worked and I had to shut it down using the power button. Then the problem got worse because the computer started freezing randomly. I know it wasn't an application problem because it happened using different apps. I took my computer to an authorized apple service provider and they told me the harddrive had some bad sectors i think, and they replaced the harddrive because I was still under earranty at the time.
Now, Sept '11, the problem came back. First the airport problem happened and now my computer freezes when waking up, the exact same thing that happened 6 months ago. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permisions and still no solution. My warranty expired last month so calling apple won't be of any help. I installed lion the day it came out and was working without any problems until now, so I don't think lion is the problem.
Has anybody had this same problem with their computer? I don't know what to do or how to tell if my harddrive is causing the problem again.
Thanks

All of the new unibody MBs/MBPs can use (6GB 4X2GB)
But yes you should definitely make sure the RAM is seated correctly and you didn't touch the gold part of the RAM during installation. Though if something was seriously wrong it would have made loud obnoxious sounds while you tried to start up.
Aside from Installation issues, you should reset the PRAM as noted previously. Hold down command-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice.
OP, looking at Super Talent's website they don't even have 1066MHz chips listed in their DDR3 chips. All I see is a jump from 800MHz (DDR2) to 1333MHz (DDR3).
Either way, I can't imagine you got that great a deal for the RAM that even if it is seemingly the correct RAM you can get better deals in the links I posted in my other post.

• Late 2012 13-in Retina MacBook Pro Freezing

I am having a problem with my MacBook Pro freezing and I cannot for my life figure out why. It seems that this started occuring about a month after my update to 10.8.5 and I have not installed any new programs since doing so. The screen will flash blue quickly (not every time) and then my keyboard and trackpad are un-responsive for 30-seconds to a minute. I took it to an Apple store and they thought it might have something to do with Apple TV but offered no real solution. I have bluetooth totally turned off as well. • Brand new Macbook Pro freezes after iTunes-update??

Updated itunes to 10.5.1 last night and now itunes and my brand new Macbook Pro freezes whenever I open iTunes. I got it last week and it has worked perfectly, but now it freezes and has trouble finding the wifi. What to do?? Can I somehow undo the update?

Is this Java based game Runescape? I experience the same crashes, ive tried using other things in-game other than the OpenGl and i still experience crashes, much more often when i have iTunes running while trying to play. Ive never had problems like this before, even while using older computers with much less memory, etc.. This is my first mac and id have to say it's not leaving a good impression. I planned to be able to play some games on this and consider Runescape requires very low CPU this is kind of sad that a Mac can't process it without crashing. Ive been reading lots of similar posts online and it sounds like Apple should be worried more about customer satisfaction than their own stocks. Hope something works out soon!!

• Macbook Pro Freezes after wake up from sleep

My Macbook Pro 5,5 with mountian Lion freezes after waking up from sleep. i have 8 GB RAM and did a hardware test wich was passed. I also have a SSD of 240 GB in the optical drive. this is my startup drive. Another HD is my workdrive. The first thing I see is that the Airport does not come back and it seems that is does not wake up. After that the whole finder freezes.
What can be the problem?

• Macbook Pro freezes when sleeping after Lion install

Anyone else experiencing this? I have the early 2010 Macbook Pro 15".
Has always ran flawlessly. Installed Lion last week and over all Lion is running great on it.
However occasionally when I close the lid and open it later my MPB doesn't wake up. Screen is black. Keyboad lights up.
I tap my keyboard, the track pad. Press the power button quickly. Nothing. I have to do a forced restart.
Initially it was doing it may once a day (maybe once every 9 or 10 times I put it to sleep).
Then it started doing it more frequently.
Yesterday it froze and I did a forced quit and a lot of my prefrence/system files got trashed apparently. Many of my apps stopped working or didn't recognize thier passwords and such or reported missing critical files. I tried various apps to repair the HD/files but it was obvious too much damange had been done. fortunately I had a Time Machine back up 12 hours old so I just did a complete restore (worked great btw).
Everything's working great again except the sleep issue is still there.
I've reset the SMC/PRAM. Still get the sleep/freezes.
I'm concerned more forced restarts is going to trash my system folder again.
Any ideas on what to do next?

So should I just purchase new RAM and install it?

• Macbook pro freezes after coming out of sleep mode

Lately my 13" early 2011 Macbook Pro has been locking up when in sleep mode. All I get is a blank screen and the cursor which responds, but no buttons pushed on the keyboard resolve issue. Resolution thus far has been to hard boot the macbook... Anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot or determine cause of issue?

Try Reset SMC.

• MacBook Pro Freezes after successfull 10.5.2 update

I downloaded and installed 10.5.2 last night, and experienced no problems. The installation was smooth. However, this morning my MacBook Pro (2.33 ghz Intel, 2GB Ram) froze twice during normal use. First I was using Safari and the screen froze, no cursor movement, nothing. I had to restart with the power button. Then, a few minutes after the restart, I was composing an email in Mail, and the same freeze happened. No cursor movement.
I have since downloaded the iLife 08 update and Leopard Graphics Update. So far, no problems and no freezes, but its only been a few minutes.
I searched the forum, and didnt see any similar posts. Please let me know if you have this same problem, or if you have heard of any fixes.

I have the same problem!!!!
It has happened 4 or 5 times already, just exactly the way you've described it! No problem installing 10.5.2, installing the iLife update, installing the graphics update. But ever since after that when i use Safari it totally freezes, no mouse movement, keyboard, lights stay lit up, doesnt respond to closing lid for sleep mode or powerbutton. Have to restart by holding down powerbutton.. So strange.. Havent seen other posts yet but heres someone just like you supporting your post ! If i find any more information on this ill let u know ! xoxo - lindsay

• MacBook Pro Freezing After Screen Replacement

I recently took my MBP in to get the screen replaced due to a screen separation issue. When I got it back it froze every now and then, but it kept continuing. Everytime I restart the computer after a freeze it will freeze up sooner and sooner. At first I thought it was a RAM issue since it particularly did it while watching videos, so I bought new RAM and it continued to freeze. Tested the new and the old RAM, but they were fine. I took it to the Genius Bar and the guy said it was a failing harddrive. Got a new harddrive upgraded to Lion and it is still freezing. I asked if something could have gone wrong when the screen was replaced and he assured me no and even if something had gone wrong they wouldn't cover it unless the actual screen was broken.
If I leave the computer off for a day it will take about 30 min before the 1st freeze, then after restart about 15 min, then 10 min, then 5 min until it will only log in then freeze.
Any guesses as to what could be causing the freezing and if it would be worth fixing as this MBP needs a new battery, a new drive (since the drive is on loan), and has the flickering screen issue?

Thanks for the reply. As an update, I took it into the Apple store again and it froze while they were trying to run the test. This time the guy said it was covered by the repair warrenty. After 2 weeks without a computer because something was wrong with the graphics cards they called me back and said they were just going to give me a late 2011 mid-range MBP. So I currently have a brand new MBP with no issues
Yeah... 3.5 years and they just release that fix for flickering screens. I hope it works for everyone. I know some people had some major issues with it.

• MacBook Pro freezes after clicking 'Shut Down' and won't remember 9600M GT

After choosing 'Shut Down' from the Apple menu my MacBook Pro (1998, 5,1 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) freezes and the Grey Screen of Death appears.
Strangely this only happens when I'm using the lower-power GeForce 9400M graphics card. When I use the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card my MacBook Pro wil shut down normally.
Ever since upgrading my system to Mac OS X 10.6.3 this problem occurs. But since then also other problems arose. After installing Safari 5 my MacBook didn't boot, and I had to zap the PRAM to get the system booting again. Since then my system won't save the 9600M GT setting in the Energy Saving panel. I can logout from the 9600M and login to the 9600M GT, but after a reboot it switches back to the 9600M card.
Today I did a combo update to Mac OS X 10.6.4, but all the problems still occur. Also I did maintenance tasks with 'Cocktail' and 'Maintenance', but that didn't help either.
Also sometimes after choosing the GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, OS X logs out and hangs in the blue screen instead of displaying the login screen.
I hope someone can help me out with this!

Unfortunately the problem reoccured, alltought less. The last weeks my MacBook froze two times.
The report I send to Apple contains the following:
... Sat Jul 17 12:42:23 2010
panic(cpu 1 caller 0x124fc5b): "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED : rdar://7254528"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-2.8.63/k ext/AGCPowerManagement.cpp:849
Backtrace (CPU 1), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)...
Anyone a clue how to solve this problem? Thanks!

• 17" MacBook Pro freezes after Capture to external hard drive!!!!!! HELP!!

Ok, so i just got my new MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio last week, and i was so excited, until this happened. I was trying to log and capture a clip to my 500GB LaCie Big Disk and everything seemed to be going fine until the clip got to the end of it's alloted time and then the computer just froze. When I closed the lid and let the laptop sleep and opened it again the clip is in place and everything seems fine. I tried capturing then w/ the LaCie plugged into the FW8oo port and my miniDV Deck plugged into the FW4oo, and it froze again after capture and then worked fine after closing the lid. Thinking I was crowding my Fire Wire bus I hooked up an external USB 2.0 drive and my deck to the fire wire , but the same thing happened. So then I tried capturing to my internal and it worked fine. I've captured to an external on my 17" iMac G5 w/ Final Cut HD for years and never had a problem. Any tips? This closing the lid thing just isn't going to work.
MacBook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.6)

nope, david is right on the mark. powermacs with one firewire bus choke like this. i can't understand why apple continues to design with one firewire bus but i'm not a designer. anyone, ANYONE who uses firewire harddrives and firewire tape machines/cameras for editing NEEDS to invest in a seperate sort of firewire card (pick your flavor) and then we'd see this behavior go away. then there will be those that will whine "this never happened before!" it's happening now, firewire cards a cheap insurance against these issues.

• Macbook pro freezes & after a hard restart i get a grey screen & horiz bar

i have a intel 2.3ghz macbook pro that is freezing up... and the only way to unfreeze it is to do a hard restart.... then when it is starting i get a grey screen with a while apple logo and a horizontal progress bar near the bottom of the screen? the computer seems to run fine after it starts until it freezes again... usually it freezes a couple of times a day... i have run disk utility and repaired the permissions and also done a disc check.. the disc check said that the hard drive was ok.... i have backed it up via time machine and superduper back up... my laptop is running osx 10.6.7 and it says that the software is up to date... the hard drive is a 500 gig hitachi and was replaced a couple of months ago... i have 105 gigs of free space... any ideas on what is going on? and what i can do to fix it... i am heading out of the country for a couple of weeks on monday...

I reloaded OS X 10.6 with the install disk (CD) and then upgraded back to 10.6.6 using the downloadable 10.6.6 Update Combo file from the Apple site. Below was the exact sequence:
1. Download 10.6.6 Update Combo file connected via a direct ethernet connection. I wasn't able to accomplish the download via wireless because my computer crashed before I could get the entire file. I saved this on an external hard drive, also, just in case. I also backed up vital files.
2. Reinstall 10.6 via install disk. Put disk in drive and restart holding down "C", per the instruction blurb on the CD. This took about 45 min. Note that the "progress" time didn't seem to match what was going on.
3. After the 10.6 install was complete, I opened and ran the 10.6.6 Update Combo
After (3), everything has been fine. Total time was about 1 hr. All of my files/programs seem to have made it through untouched.
I've been tempted to try the 10.6.7 Update, but am still gunshy from the experience. I have a feeling that if one were to use the 10.6.7 Update Combo in (3), things would work out fine. I'd love to know if this is the case, but for right now, I'm pretty happy that my computer is back to normal. Hope this helps.
BTW I think you can probably restore via Time Machine, but the above is what I did.

• Macbook pro freezes after login

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15" with a Core i7 2.66GHz processor. Sometime after upgrading to Lion, I started getting the spinning beachball of death just after login. Unlike many posts about freezes on similar MacBook Pros, mine is not freezing before login, but after. I start the machine, login, and then if I try to open any application, the beachball appears and I have to do a hard shutdown with the power button. Then if I restart again, it is usually fine. I was able to fix this problem some time ago by deleting a preference file (plist) for one of my apps (I think), but the problem has surfaced again and I cannot remember how to correct this. Anyone having similar problems, please let me know if you've had any luck fixing it. I am running 10.7.3 (in fact, it seems like the problem may have resurfaced just after the update to 10.7.3, but I'm not sure.)
FYI, I have auto graphics switching off and am still experiencing this problem.

Don't worry about the auto graphics switching. Go to "Users & Groups" in system preferences. Then click on login items and removes all of them. I haven't pinned down exactly which one was causing the problem but I suspect it was one associated with my HP printer. I have verified that Dropbox and Magic Menu from StuffIt are OK to leave in the login items. Just remove what you have there and add them back in one at time (if you can't live without them) until it starts to give you trouble again. Let me know if this helps.

If those articles don't help, the next time the problem happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. • Macbook Pro freezes after upgrade to WD 1TB (WDC WD10TPVT-00HT5T1)

Hi All,
I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 1TB of sweet space. I choose to upgrade to Western Digital 1 TB. Got it from Amazon and following are the drive details:
Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,886,016 bytes)
Model: WDC WD10TPVT-00HT5T1
Revision: 01.01A01
Upgrade was simple enough as the steps are well documented on multiple sites. I chose to install fresh copy of Mac OS from Install DVD. I migrated applications and documents using MacOS Install System Wizard. Everything went fine and I started enjoying this massive space available at my disposal.
Problem started happening when my laptop freezes regularly (every 30 minutes or so). It recovers after 30 secs period. I went through multiple discussions but could not find any mention of it. All 1TB owners are happy and never reported this problem. I started digging in OS logs and found following log:
+Dec 5 08:04:53 macbook-pro smartd[47]: Device: IOService:/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/SATA@B/AppleMCP79AHCI/PR T0@0/IOAHCIDevice@0/AppleAHCIDiskDriver/IOAHCIBlockStorageDevice, failed to read SMART Attribute Data+

Next time when my laptop froze, I found same line is system log. I decided to run SMART tests on my drive. It reported SMART is disabled on my new drive.
I enabled it using following commands:
+smartctl -s on /dev/disk0+
+smartctl 5.39 2009-12-09 r2995 [i386-apple-darwin10.4.0] (local build)+

I am still facing the same freezing problems. I tried running some SMART tests and here is the output:

It still report SMART is disabled and lot of tests failed.
I then tried Smart Utility and I ran short tests using it. It got stuck and I had to cancel the test. I got following message in system log.
+Dec 5 14:12:45 macbook-pro SMART Utility[1828]: smartctl returned error message: A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.+
Is somebody else experiencing this issue? I will be really thankful if somebody can help me to figure out the problem and potential solution.
Thanks

No idea what's wrong with your drive, but the best thing to do is to bug Western Digital about it. Be sure to have the serial number when you call. they can help you to troubleshoot it, and if they determine it is faulty, they should replace it under warranty.
I've not heard of this kind of problem before. How did you format it?
If this drive has the built-in shock guard technology, there may be a conflict with Apple's built in Sudden Motion Sensor. If so, you can disable the Sudden Motion Sensor and see if this helps:

Good luck!
