Retina macbook pro thunderbolt display not discovered on wake 10.8.1

Okay, so I installed 10.8.1 yesterday,
Now, when my MBP Retina wakes from sleep, for a few seconds both displays work, but then either the TB display or the MBP display blacks out and doesn't light back up until I reset the MBP.  I can still move the cursor onto that screen's "space" but I can't see it because the screen is blank/blacked out.
When I open prefereneces and try to "detect displays" the display doesn't show up/nothing changes.
I end up doing  a Shift-Option-Control / Power SMC reset after shutdown to get both screens to work again.
I did not have this problem before 10.8.1.
Any ideas?

I have a similar problem.  I updated to 10.8.2 and lost the functionality of the thunderbolt port closest to the rear of the laptop. Was using it daily for presentations, updated, and now can only use the port closer to the front of the machine.

  • Retina MacBook Pro + Cinema Display = Only 25% of images visible when opened

Every single time I open an image, I can only see 25% of it. I have to hit Cmd+, Cmd- to zoom in & out every single time. It's ridiculous. I think the problem might have something to do with the fact that the retina display has twice the pixel density. This is just a theory, but I'd bet money that it's the culprit. I just realized that the problem doesn't exist when I don't have my external monitor plugged in.
Here's what I see on the external 27" monitor:
Then after hitting Cmd+, Cmd-, this is what I see (this web form has scaled this image down, but you get the gist):
Can someone please tell me how to avoid this maddening annoyance? I've contacted Adobe Tech Support, and they can't help me with this problem. They have given up; they simply ignore my emails at this point.
I'm using the latest version of Photoshop CC on a fairly new 15" retina MacBook Pro with a 27" non-Thunderbolt Apple Cinema Display.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Ah, it's nice to have a friendly and knowledgeable person replying to my question for a change.
Here are my display settings from Mac systems prefs:
The problem exists regardless of the Application Frame setting or the zoom tool's Resize Windows to Fit setting. I'm using windows, not tabs. Here's another example of what I see when I open an image:
And here's what I see after hitting Cmd+ followed by Cmd-
It's really just an incredibly annoying inconvenience.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Retina Macbook Pro thunderbolt ethernet adaptor issue

    Hi there,
My retina macbook pro is recognising my thunderbolt to ethernet adapor in system profile but it wont connect to the internet.
I tried the same adaptor in my macbook air where it works.
has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it?
    Many thanks
    Ryan

Reset the SMC. If that doesn't fix it take it to an Apple Genius Bar and have them Fix It. That is why they are in business.

  • Retina Macbook Pro PHY MODE not connecting to 801.11n... slow wi-fi!

I've had the Retina Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks and im really getting tired of the slow wi-fi connection this past week! I tried looking at the advanced wi-fi options (opt+click on the icon) and the PHY MODE always says 801.11g. Heres the catch: I did the same thing on my iMac and it says 802.11n!
I tested this in a few ways:
speedtest on the retina macbook: 2-4 mb/s
    speedtest on iMac: 12-15 mb/s
    speedtest on iPad: 12-15 mb/s
speedtest on friends PC laptop: 10-15 mb/s
Really crappy speeds on the retina macbook right? I'm about to throw this out the window! Also, I resetted my Netgear WNR2000 router to factory settings 2-3 times just to make sure I'm not overlooking anything on there.
Any way that I can change the PHY MODE to 802.11n on the macbook? or should I bring it into apple and have them check to see if the network adapter is faulty?

    I have found a solution!
I took the laptop to apple 'genius' bar and they could not figure out the problem. They told me to download mountain lion to see if it would work. Didnt work! So there was one thing left for me to try: BUY A DUAL CHANNEL ROUTER.
After purchasing that and connecting to the 5ghz channel (make sure you're on WPA2 as well) my speeds are fast like my other devices. I'm assuming the laptop is sensitive to these things! Kinda stupid but oh well; makes sense as the channel is clear from other devices on my network.
So if you're still having these problems try buying a new dual channel router. If it still doesn't work, return the router and have apple repair your laptop (or take it back if you still can).

  • BENQ FP241W on Retina Macbook Pro - native resolution not supported?

    Hi there,
I have tried connecting my BENQ FP241W monitor to my new Macbook Pro with retina display via HDMI.
The monitor appears to be displaying at only 1600x900 and looks very blurry since the native resolution of the monitor is 1920x1200. I have actually tried this with an older 2009 model macbook pro and the same thing happend, although I was using a dispaly port to HDMI adaptor and never investigated further to the reason the native resolution was not supported.
Going back to the Retina Macbook and the BENQ FP241W. It gives the following resolution options for scaled: 1080p, 1080i and 1600x900. When I choose 1080p or 1080i it looks the same as 1600x900 i.e very blury and not even close to the sharpness that is capable of the display - true 1080p should look sharper than how it looks selected so I dont believe it is actually displaying 1080p. It also has the option for 'best for display' which I would expect it to show native resolution of 1920x1200 - unfortunately it still apears to be 1600x900.
Can anyone help me out? Is this a driver issue or something else?
    Thanks
    Rich

I can sort this out by just using a HDMI > DVI cable which works fine. I think there must just be an issue with the BenQ HDMI input supporting 1920x1200. Its annoying because the screen is also connected to a PC workstation by DVI so it would be good to have the HDMI for the Macbook so I can quickly switch the display by pressing a button instead of having to unplug cables...

  • Retina MacBook Pro Late 2013 not charging?

Bought my MacBook about a year ago, and very happy with it.
However just a couple of days ago, it stopped charging? The light wouldn't come on at all..
So I opened up my spare MagSafe 2 charger and tried that in a different power outlet and it still didn't work
I've done some research and I have checked that the battery is still in 'good' condition (checked it in the utilities or something) and that it does not need replacing at the moment
so perhaps something is wrong with the port?
stupidly enough I have not backed up my laptop, and it has plenty of important files
    what should I do?

    Hi ridgeleyy,
If you are having an issue with being unable to charge your MacBook Pro's battery using either power adapter, I would suggest that your next step would be to reset the system management controller. Use the steps in this article -

  • External Hard Drives for retina Macbook Pro - Thunderbolt vs. USB 3.0

I already bought a G-Tech FireWire800/USB 3.0 external hard drive and just bought a second one.
And I just found out that USB 3.0 does not daisy chain (and the G-Tech drives only have one port each), and I also read that USB 3.0 hubs are not working well on the Mac.
I think of selling the drives again (at a loss, of course) and buying a Thunderbolt drive:
    Here are the two options:
    1. Western Digital:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/890519-REG/Western_Digital_wdbusk0080jsl_n esn_8TB_My_Book_Thunderbolt.html
This drive seems to have two external hard drives. Would it be possible to use one of them as the main external hard drive, and the second one as the back-up hard drive?
    2. G-Tech
G-Tech also sells Thunderbolt hard drives like this one here - but it's a RAID 0 drive - can I also use both discs separately as main drive and backup drive without using RAID 0? I just trust G-Tech more than Western Digital:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/858463-REG/G_Technology_0G02272_8TB_G_RAID _External_Hard.html
    What's your take on it?
    Thanks!

The NEXT THING which is upcoming now that SSD prices are dropping is Firewire to SSD, or Thunderbolt to SSD.
Now THAT will be a "did you see that?" improvement.  A few home brew folks are already making their own.
run the two discs separately as one disc for storage? Yes, I however I have never had the desire or need to setup such a daisy chain. Autonomous data storage for safety is a rule I live by.
Backup VS. storage, is really a distinction without a difference.
My main PDF collection is 14 Terabytes, so...............  Yes, it depends on what you need, just remember the religion of storage, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Never consider any computer a data storage device, rather a data creation ,sending, and manipulation device. Any who thinks any data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time even under ideal conditions
burn important data onto multiple copies of archival DVDs and store same in cool dark fireproof safes, hidden places, secret places, multiple places
always consider and expect thy computer’s hard drive to completely crash anytime, at all times, and keep a cloned and updated hard drive handy at all times to return to immediate productivity and avoid program and parameter reinstallation and tweaking

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • Retina macbook pro with thunderbolt display causes speaker issues

I have a thunderbolt display and used the speakers fine on old macbook pro. I now plug in my new retina macbook pro 15" with mountain lion and the sound plays fine for a while then starts to crackle real bad and then stops all together. If I switch the the laptop speakers then switch back after 30 or so minutes the thunderbolt speakers will work again for a short amount of time then again crackle and stop.
This may be mountain lion related but I have tried another non-retina version macbook pro with mountain lion and did not notice the issue but it was only for an hour or so. So this leads me to belive its the computer.
Any suggestions? its really really anoying and wasting my time trying to fix it.

I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved.

  • Can I wirelessly display the screen of my 15 inch retina Macbook Pro to a Thunderbolt display ?

Can I wirelessly display (like via bluetooth) the screen of my 15 inch, late 2013, Retina Macbook Pro, to a thunderbolt display ?

They can fix it, but not for free. Macbook repairs supposedly are classified into 3 tiers by an Apple Rep, I for least amount of damage and III for most. I have a dent in the corner of my MBP and it would require new housing to get it fixed. $450 (tier I) or ~half the cost of a Macbook Air on education discount... HA.
If it doesn't affect your everyday computing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's awful, but welcome to the club

  • Can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
    thank you

    ken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.
