Retina MacBook Too Warm?
Over the past few days my Macbook Pro has become abnormally warm, almost too hot to touch on and around the location where the display connects to the bottom portion. On the bottom of the laptop as well where "Macbook Pro" is engraved is very hot. Additionally, the 60w charger block where you connect it into the wall as well.
Nothing triggers this to happen, it is always hot from now on. I keep the unit on a glass surface.

Hey guys, first post here. I recently received this MacBook as a prize in a web design contest I won. Anyways, I notice that the temperatures are really high, all the time.
Right now, I only have Safari and Adium (an IM client) open, and I've been on the MacBook for less than an hour (it was on Sleep before that). According to the widget iStat Pro as well as Temperature Monitor, CPU A is at 62 C! And even just surfing the net on Safari, and Adium open, my MacBook's temperature never drops below 55 C. I thought the correct temperature range for "light" usage (which I assume I'm doing) was about 50 C.
I suspect it might be thermal paste issues, but I'm not that into taking apart laptops and voiding warranties. I have an Apple Authorized Service Provider near me, but they said I should call up AppleCare before bringing in my MacBook to check over the issue, because in case there's no problem they may have to charge me for "diagnostic" fees.
So my real question is, is my MacBook running too hot? Normal usage usually keeps me at 60 C, watching a YouTube video bumps it close to 70 C, and uploading photos from my camera can jump it to 80 C!! I think that is too hot...that's not normal for the MacBook is it? Should I call up AppleCare?
Also, one other issue. I have a single "stuck" pixel near the dock area. Its very distracting, and I think it is "stuck" and not "dead" because it is red under a white background...but also black under a black background, and black under a green background...is it stuck or is it dead? If its stuck, I tried using the "flashing video of RGB colours" for an hour or so, and I also tried "massaging" the pixel, but it didn't go away.

I think your temp is about right, and since it powered with intel GMA 950 with shared memory that wasn't that superb, it will kick in the fan if you try to watch you tube video.

I am planning to format my Retina MacBook Pro. However, I have a bootcamp partition. If I were to format my Mac, will the bootcamp drive be gone too?
It all depends on what you do.
If you reformat the partition containing OS X then nothing will happen to the BootCamp partition.
If the other hand you reformat the whole disk then it will be gone.
Why do you think you need to reformat the drive?

Retina Macbook Pro wifi too slow at home, other devices are fine though
I bought Retina macbook Pro 15inch couple months ago.
The internet speed seems ok at school, but when at home it is too slow that I can't do anything at all.
But my other devices like iphone/ ipad works great and has fast internet.
So I upgraded internet service, from 15mb speed to 30,
but it still is slow.
I turned off the bluetooth, and seemed like it help tiny bit with the speed but I can't have anything done with this speed.
Do I need to buy a new modem / router?

This will reveal all sorts of information about your Network and what is around you.
Look for what channel your Router is on. See if any other Routers are trying to use the same channel.
Look for the transmit level, something like -75.
Look for the transmit rate. -

I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer! When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT! I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter! 10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down... It's not hot to the touch but still warm! On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help! I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%? It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%

I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.

Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics
I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
off.
3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case.This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

Need advice for external display for my retina Macbook Pro.
I got my 15-inch retina Macbook Pro (Mid 2014) two months ago. It’s a fantastic machine but I am having some regrets concerning screen size. I want to be able to enjoy movies on my computer but 15-inch is just too small. So I am considering purchasing an external display for my Macbook Pro. I am thinking about a 25’’+ monitor (or TV) which can offer me closest experience to the retina one on my Macbook. I don’t want 4K monitors though, as most of the contents I consume are full HD 1080P. But I do care about PPI a lot (for browsing).
What kind of display can help me obtain this similar experience I get on my Mac? Any recommendations? Thanks.I have the 15" MacBook Pro, Retina, Mid 2012 also, same exact model. Kind of the same thing is happening with me. I will intermitentyl get a flickering on the bottom 1/3 of the screen, all the way across. It flickers/flashes on and off on the bottom half or third of the screen, when I am typing or when I am perfectly stil, doen't really matterl. Only happens for a split second, but can do it multiple times, or sometimes not at all. I can go tens of minutes without i hapenning, but I can also go tens of seconds with it happening multiple times.
It never goes black or grey or "out" at all, just randomly flickers throughout the day.
I do get burned-in images all the time, but they disappear within seconds. But this flickering is definitely worrysome. I did get the the Apple Care, so I am not too worried as Apple is usually good about this kind of thing, but I do have a similar problem to you and wanted to document this. I didnt find many other people oiut there with this problem, so let me know what has gone on since your post on the New Year. Any solution? Did you call Apple?

What is a good monitor for the retina macbook pro. Im looking for 27 inch that is around the price of the thunderbolt display. The only thing putting me off the thunderbolt display is that i wouldnt be able to watch stuff on my xbox on it due to no hdmi.
Im going to university so it would be useful to be able to watch tv and play games on the monitor too but Im more interested in a monitor that will work great on the rmbp and on photoshop. I need to be able to calibrate it perfectly.If I am understanding you correctly you should look at the 27 inch Samsung HD LED. Best Buy has it on sale for $340

How can I do a clean installation of Mavericks 10.9.1 on Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro
Hi I need some help -
I bought a late 2013 15' Retina Macbook Pro and it was shipped with 10.9.0 build number 13A3017.
Now 10.9.1 is out, and I wanted to download the full installation image and burn it to thumb drive and do a full clean re-installation.
But I just found Mac App Store doesn't allow me to download the full 5.29GB installation image from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x...ks/id675248567, and my current 10.9.0 can only be _upgraded_ to 10.9.1 with the 395MB incremental update package from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1712, this upgrade package is described as "It includes all updates from OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 plus system specific enhancements to improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac."
So maybe the full 5.29GB 10.9.1 which is available on Mac App Store is not compatible with the 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?
I just downloaded the upgrade package from Mac App Store and now I'm running 10.9.1 build number 13B3116 fine.
So my questions here: I really would like to do a clean full re-installation of 10.9.1. Where can I get the full installation image which is compatible with 2013 15' Late Retina Macbook Pro?There is a way to get yourself a fully functional install file for a Late 2013 model.
1. Format a USB stick
2. Reboot the Mac, and hold down CMD-R to get into recovery mode
3. Start a new installation and choose the USB stick as a target. You should be able to choose your normal hard drive as a target, too, because as long as the installer package is downloaded, no data should be erased, but when you decide to use a USB stick, you're on the safe side.
4. The Mac will be downloading the install package. This takes a while, the time remaining shown is not correct. If you need to have an idea how long it will take you, choose the log from the help menu during download, it will show you how many chunks are already downloaded (it was 504 chunks total for me).
5. When the download is ready, the Mac reboots automatically, pull the USB stick when it does. If you're not before your computer when this happens, don't worry, when you come back, you will be in the setup program. Just switch your machine off by pressing the power switch for more than 10 seconds, and then pull the stick.
6. On the stick you will find the "OS X Install ESD.dmg". Copy that file to your Mac (it's the only file you'll need from the stick. After that, you can reformat the stick and use it for the next step).
7. You can use this file to finally create a bootable USB stick if you follow the instructions that you can find anywhere on the net or in this forum. -
White spot on my Retina MacBook Pro?
Hello everyone again. I have a problem with the display (again, sadly ). This time, it isn't ghosting. The panel I have is the second generation LG panel display, or SJA2. While I was browsing on the web, I noticed a white spot visible on bright colors. I searched other forums, and apparently, it isn't a dead pixel, but another bad case of LCD Muras. I'm getting to the point where I'm tired of having to deal with flawed Apple products again. I paid a huge premium for this machine and I expected solid quality for this machine. It's ridiculous. I have heard too many issues with Retina MacBooks over the past 2 years since it debuted. And since my warranty ran out a year ago, I'm out of luck. Even worse, I didn't get AppleCare, which was my fault. I took great care of this laptop, and I never abused it, pinched it, threw it, or dropped it. I don't see how something like this could happen. So, please, I need as much help as I can get. I'm not knowledgeable on computers.
1) Do Samsung Panels suffer from the same problem as well? (I know they are not prone to ghosting, so that isn't a worry here.)
2) Is there anything else I can do to fix the LCD Mura issue, or am I going to have to replace the display completely? What else can I do?
3) Does anyone who suffered from the same issue as I have know what's going on, or know what's causing the LCD Muras? A manufacturing defect?
4) Would it be safe to buy a replacement Samsung screen from Ebay? I have to be careful just because getting a replacement doesn't guarantee an immediate fix.

Seems like non retina macbook pro is more expensive than retina macbook pro!
MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.6 GHz is $2,299.00 with the Antiglare Widescreen Display now. If I wanna upgrade it with Crucial 16GB kit ($80) and 256GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD with Data Transfer Kit ($220) it's gonna coast $2,599.00 all together. On the other hand, with the base Retina version with the upgrades (2.6 GHz, 16GB) from Apple It only coasts 2,499.00. I even save $100 for my external DVD burner if I want to get one. Most people say on this forum non retina is cheaper than retina MAcbook pro but I couldn't figure it out how please tell me if I am missing anything!
I have been looking for most discussions in this forum about retina and non retina Macbook pro. Most people think that upgrading is the biggest issue with the Retina Macbook pro but can we upgrade the non retina version more than 16GB? if we can't it's not an issue. With the SDD I guess we can go with the external ones if we really need one and I assume that external SSD's are going to get cheaper in the time too or we can get external USB3 / Thunderbolt hard drives. I just decided to purchase one of these Macbook pro and started looking for more information online to figure out which one is better but I got more confused because the numbers say the Retina is cheaper and upgrading is not that big of a deal but most people who know about Apple products more than me on this forum say non Retina is cheaper and it can be upgraded after purchasing it.
I might be wrong with my thoughts but I need some info about upgrading. What rigs can I upgrade with the non retina Macbook pro?

I am thinking of getting one of these for video editing (Final cut pro X)!Yep, the only things that you can upgrade on the non-Retina models is the RAM and the HD/SSD. I'm assuming that your calculations are correct, so you've just got to decide if you want to the Retina display model or not. For me, there have been too many issues with the Retina models to buy one just now - but I'm sure that there are a lot of happy Retina owners out there - we only hear from those having problems.

Late 2013 retina macbook pro drops thunderbolt ethernet cyclically
My new (late 2013) retina macbook pro drops the wired ethernet connection many times a day. Each time killing off all VPN and ssh sessions. This is using the apple thunderbolt to gigE adapter.
This is the second thunderbolt adapter I've received from Apple. Both do the same thing.
Here's my console log filtered on "Link". It's a continuous series of link up/link down messages.
Same problem on both thunderbolt ports too.

I'm about to that point, but it's going to be hard for them to diagnose because it's so random. I'll go in there, it'll work, then we'll stand around staring at eachother for a bit.
Then they'll say, you have to reload your OS from scratch and I'll say "but I just did that" and that will be it.
Maybe that's a bit overly cynical, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for the 3 hours time suck that a trip to the mother ship. -
I am a twelve year old boy ready to get my first Mac computer. I already have an iPad 3 and I really like it. Now I'm going to start saving up for a Mac and I am down to two choices, as listed above. I'm going to be using it for web browsing, games, drawing, word documents, presentations, movies, video calling, messages, Windows 8 and I will be using quite a few apps from the Mac App Store.
Also could you tell me how long Apple support the MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X and how long they support the MacBook Pro with the latest OS.
I also want to know if it is worth paying £200 to upgrade a 128GB SSD to a 256GB one.If past history serves, Apple will support the 2013 models for 5-7 years with new OS upgrades but there's no guarantee. However that doesn't mean the computer will be worthless. I have a 10-11 year old Mac serving as a guest computer running an OS two versions old. It still does everything our guests would want to do while they are visiting.
The 128GB drive is the smallest I'd recommend and for a teen (who is likely to collect media and lots of software) I'd call the 256GB a very good idea - especially ince you indicate you want to run Win8 too.
The retina MacBook has a gorgeous display and has a faster processor but all those extra pixels push the GPU to the max. Until faster GPUs come along I'm avoiding the retina computers. -
New retina macbook pro 13" slow animations
I am experiencing slow animations on my new retina macbook pro 13" (I have the middle 2,4 Ghz base model). This happens throughout the whole system, especially noticeable is the animation on the login screen and the laggyness when scrolling list views from inside your dock (for example scrolling your downloads or documents in "list view" mode inside the dock). But it also happens when scrolling in finder or with some window animations.
The solution that solves this problem is plugging in my external monitor which doesn't have retina resolution. Now everything is really smooth again like it should be.
I also checked a friends macbook pro (he's having exactly the same but with the more powerfull i7 processor) and it turned out he is not having those issues.
What I tried so far is resetting the NVRAM and a full new installation but neither did solve anything. I am not using any third party software which could cause this, it's also happening on a bare minimum system.I have met the same problem too!

I have been using my macbook for 2 days.
And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!
The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.
But actually the system is working and the apps are working.
And the power button can actually work.
So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.
And then everything is okay.
Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.
When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.
But after several mins, it works again.
It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.
And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.
I think it is a software problem?
Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon! -
Solution for sharp edges on Retina MacBook Pro
The sharp edges on the front of my new Retina MacBook Pro (late 2013) drove me crazy cutting into my wrists.
My solution is two pieces of self sticking velcro - the loop kind of velcro which is soft. Apply them across the top and down the front edge on either side of the trackpad all the way out to the side edges. They are not too thick so as to prevent sleep when closing the cover. They don't look too bad either. I'd say they match the black keys on the keyboad.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process (Finder) in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Firefox keeps crashing upon opening
