Retina MBP making fan noise - Apple store unwilling to help

Hi All,
Any adivice would be appreciated with my problem.  So I got a Retina MBP when it first came out and noticed it had a ding so I took it to the Apple store and exchanged it - no questions asked.  The newer unit they gave me, which I currently have is making a very odd fan noise.  It is faint but apperent when working in quite enviroments like at my office.  Its really annoying.  I took it to the Apple store recently and explained the situation and told them that the original unit i had didn't have this problem at all so I know its not the typical fan noise.  They maxed out the CPU, RAM, etc. and said they couldnt' here it and as such, are unable to replace my unit.  I told them that I do not do that much intensive work on it and only can here it when its quite - they probably wouldn't here it in the loud store. 
As a result, I have now recorded the faint sound coming from the fans but I don't know what the best approach is to have the just replace my unit.  Should I take it back to the apple store with the recording?  Should I just call apple care?  Apple is getting worse and worse in my opinion with customer service.  I remember a time where, if i was unsatisfied with their product, they would exchange it no matter what.

Yeah Apple solved it.  I called Apple Customer Support, not "Applecare" and the person was very helpful.  I told them that i recorded the noise - it was in my downloads folder.  The person set it up so I could mail in the laptop through an Apple store and they replaced the fan.  I was without a laptop for like a week though.

    ^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
    I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
    Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

    Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
    Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
    Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
    LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

    So I have found a common denominator to this phenomenon. After having the same problem, I started to recopy my playlist of 500+ songs in groups of 10-20, 30+, 75+, and then over a 100+. Any music I have purchased from iTunes won't copy, but everything else did. Unsure if I made a playlist called "Purchased" at some point or this is an iTunes default, I also noticed it had some of the songs contained in my other playlist and was showing on my iPhone. Regardless of what I did such as dragging music from that playlist to the other and clearing songs from that playlist, I removed it altogether from the iPhone itself vs. doing through iTunes. After that, music copied fine to my playlist.
    So, my theory is that iTunes is getting tripped up on purchased tracks already showing on the phone and all songs are showing grayed out/dotted circle because iTunes can't resolve the conflict with purchased tracks.

    You don't download it.  it is built in to your iphone, unless it was originally purchased from one of the Middle eastern countries where it is not allowed.

    I ended up having them call me then was able to give them 1 of my secret questions right and they reset things so I could reset all my secret questions.
    Try going into contact support and see if you can schedule a call. There seems to be some issues with peoples' id's and this update. iTunes thought that I'd never bought anything from my computer or device before, and I clearly had, so it's like it got confused. THen I tried to get my questions reset, but the mail never came, which is why I just got a phone call because I felt it was 'real person' time.

    Facetime for iphone is not available in the App Store because it is already built into any iphone that is FaceTime compatible, and I think that includes iphone 4.  You should be able to find Facetime amongst the other built in applications that came with it.  However, it is possible that if it was purchased in certain countries where Facetime is not allowed, the App was not included.

  • MBP loud fan noise

    I'm not sure if it's the fan or not, but every now and then my MBP will just start humming real loud. It's not a high screeching sound, just a very loud wind-like sound, as if it were opening some giant program or transferring many GBs - but it's not. I'll be in Safari, looking through finder, opening files, or just plain letting it sit there and this noise will start and persist for about 2-3 minutes at a time. Not sure what's going on.

    Replacing the fans on any macbook pro is a sinch. it seems intimidating i know... but its really easy actually. I just replaced my right hand side fan just a few days ago. took maybe 20 minutes tops and it was my first time taking apart this glorious computer.
    i purchased the fan from ifixit.com check out the site. 40 bucks i think for a new one, but mind works great now.
    follow their instructions. its literally just removing a bunch of screws and pulling the old one out and putting the new one in. dont be afraid to be a little rough when pulling the top panel off. you wont damage anything.
    i dont know what the apple store charges for the fix, but if it's more than 50 bucks, just do it yourself. trust me it's way easier than you'ld think

    I'm planning to buy macbook pro 13 inch 2.9ghz. But, I heard macbook pro does have fan noises which I don't like. I heard that the retina version doesn't have fan noises but I think they're just to expensive. HELP MEE!!

    You cannot hear the fans when they are running at their minimum speed (about 2000 RPM).   If you put a load on the system, e.g., by running a graphically intense program, the fans speed up and you can hear them.  How "loud" it is is subjective.    But I copied the following from http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1171907.html

  • MBP 15" Fan Noise After OSX Update

    I have a mid 2012, 15" Retina MBP
    Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Just updated to OSX 10.8.4
    As soon as I restarted after the update, both fans started blowing hard.  The computer isn't warm to the touch at all and a review of activity monitor shows nothing sucking CPU cycles.
    This must be happening to others.  Anyone heard of a fix?

    Here's an update:
    I tried restarting the MBP a couple times before posting the issue here and that did not help. 
    Then after posting the issue, I thought that I should shut the machine down for few mins instead of just restarting.
    When I powered it back up after the full shutdown and launched the same programs that were on when I first noticed the issue (chrome, firefox, itunes streaming a Radio station) everything was normal.
    After about five minutes runnning, the fans have not fired up (or at least not so I can hear them spinning loudly as they had before.)
    So I'll continue my day and if the fans start again I'll follow the SMC reset instructions you linked to (Thanks again).
    Will follow up after I'm certain the issue is either resolved or ongoing.

    If the seller is an Authorized Apple Service Provider, then yes.  Otherwise I do not know.

    I've backed up etc and am ready to get repaired, but from what I've read it's going to be expensive if done in an Apple store.
    Is it worth considering a cheaper independent laptop repair shop?
