Retina vs. Hi Res Antiglare screen? New MBP

I am looking to pick up a new 15" MBP and am torn between the two.
(my simple in store tests didn't prove one to outshine the other, except I love the weight of the rMBP)
Portability is key since I travel and work in 4 locations in my studio alone.
I will be using it attached to the thunderbolt 27" display about 60% of the time.
Comparing the two mid range with the same processor speed (2.6GHz) and memory (8GB)
Here is my main question:
(The antiglare with 1TB Serial ATA Drive vs. the rMBP 550 flash drive.)
Is the 1tb actually more computer compared to the faster more stable flash drive?
..........then you aren't giving up the FireWire or drive?
(As I understand it there is a workaround with the FireWire for my external drives using the thunderbolt display dock)
I am guessing we will have a thunderbolt FireWire 800 available to us as soon as next month?
?How are these looking hooked up to the thunderbolt display?
Any additional considerations here?
I don't really do gaming or film editing at this point. Architect (Cad/ Vectorworks) and photo editing (adobe PS and AI) and streaming movies are my heaviest uses. Transitioning from a 17" MBP 4.1 w/ anti glare screen: 4 GB 2009
Besides the iPad I have never had a glossy screen so I have no idea if the glare will be an issue. I don't work outside very often at this point.
Appreciate any insight.

Looking at them side-by-side, the Retina display is much less glossy than the standard glossy screen, but not as 'matte' as the antiglare screen.
I just wouldn't buy a Retina display just now - all Office applications look pixelated and fuzzy, as do all Adobe CS6 applications. Rumor has it that there is a Retina display version of Photoshop in the works but Adobe has remained mum on it since it was 'previewed' at the June WWDC. I just couldn't buy a Retina just now - very few major software companies (other than Apple) have versions that support the Retina display.
If I were you, I'd go with the most beefed-up high-res antiglare MBP that you can afford. I've also added 16GB of RAM, allowing me to run dozens of RAM-hungry apps concurrently, and added a SSD, speeding up everything. I also recently added an Apple Thunderbolt Display - beautiful, functional, but glossy!

  • Macbook Pro 2011, Graphic automatic switch - High Res, antiglare screen

I have had a hugh problem with my new macbook Pro, 2011 with High Res, Antiglare screen. The automatic Graphic switching causes the screen to flicker about every 10 seconds when the comuter gets hot. It happens whenever a graphic intents piece of software has been active for some time and I return to the desktop. After two attempts to repair the computer I have installed gfxCardstatus and turned off the systems own autoswitching. This has eliminated the problem. But I hope that Apple will come up with a software update, that will make its own OS capable of controlling the autoswitch for the High Res screen.

Hey andersand! Look, I don't have a definite solution for you but I do have a 3rd Party application that I use to manually switch between graphics cards! It's called GFXCardStatus and you can choose what graphics you want to use from a drop-down menu in your menu bar.
You're right to assume that the graphics switching would cause the flickering and not something else, and I think that using this software would at least reduce the amount of flickering that occurs.
Link here, http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus and when you've installed it a tried it out, tell me if it improves at all. Good Luck!

  • How can I get ilife (iphoto/imovie) on my Used Retina ... Previously purchased new mbp 17 and have an Imac 27....

Well I just purchased another Retina mbp 15 and this ones a keeper (sold 2 before this was just looking for a mint one).  Now my issue is I cant get ilife (in particular imovie and iphoto) without purchasing it and I dont want to do that.... yet.
I did purchase a brand new mbp 17 in 2010 but not sure if I registered it or logged into the app store. Dont think I did because I dont see any downloads available in the app store.
I have an imac 27 Im using right now and I dug up the appllications cd it came with.
    My questions are:
How can I install ilife or any of the apps without buying them?
Are the applications one use only for the specific machines?
Is there any way to use the resource dvd to install onto my retina ?
(regarding this I have tried using remote disc and my retina wont show anything under remote disc when the cd is in my ima )
ANy input or help is appreciated. I did enjoy using imove and iphoto alot and would like to have them again.

I appreciate the replies. Grant if I have an Imac and the apps on the cd then what you are saying is it should be tied to my apple id and therefore I should be able to install them on my new macbook?
I dont recall when I bought my mbp 17 if it had a cd and back then it was my first mac.. dont think there was an app store just itunes. It isnt tied to my account but shouldnt it be? I guess the person who bought that 17 from me got a free bundle :/
Its not a matter of $30 I understand that fully. Its just its $30 wasted if I am able to get it.
What im confused about (and I dont care to argue apples reasoning for it) is tying ilife to 'that Mac alone" is just dumb when a new owner of a machine cant install it and has to buy it again. that means the original owner keeps the apps for any machine he wishes and it isnt for the machine.
I think im confusing myself and possibly answered my own question but ill leave it lol.

  • 15in early 2011 MBP, Can I get the screen replaced w Hi-res Antiglare?

I have a 15 Macbook pro early 2011.  I was wondering if apple could replace the current screen with the hi-res antiglare screen.

It'll cost the same amount of money as your computer did at first. If you just got your MBP (and you bought it directly from Apple via a store or online) go exchange it.

  • Monster Screen Cleaner on an antiglare screen

I know, I know. You're only supposed to use water when cleaning a MacBook Pro screen.
I have a late 2011 15" with a hi res antiglare screen. Water was fine for a while, but I was recommded Monster Screen cleaner for both my MacBook and my LCD TV. I had heard that it was quite safe from several sources, so I used the supplied microfibre cloth moistend with Monster to gently clean my MacBook screen.
At first it looked great. Now that it has dried, I notice a "vignette" around the edges of my screen: the edges that meet the bezel are darker where I didn't reach with my cloth. With light on my screen, I can easy see where I wiped with Monster, and there are some subtle streaks across the surface where I wiped.
Moreover, to my eyes, there is more glare from direct light over the general surface than in the un-wiped corners. So my question is: do antiglare MBP screens have an antiglare coating? Could I have removed this with a gentle wipe with Monster solution? I supposed I assumed that the antiglare propery was simply the matte surface of the screen, to be contrasted with the glossy layer on stock MacBooks.
I am incensed, because many parties including Mac professionals have recommended this stuff to be safe and effective.
Has anyone had a similar experience with their antiglare screen?

All I can relate to you is that I use Windex Electronics cleaner (NOT regular Windex) using a small microfiber cloth to apply it and a large one (12"x15") to wipe it with great success.  No film, spots or residue.  I recommend it and I receive no compensation from the manufacturer.
    Ciao.

  • Screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15"

When I do a screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15" and paste it into Outlook or any other program it looks huge and distorted, how do I fix this?
I'm assuming it's because I am capturing the image in Retina 2880x1400 and then trying to paste that image into a non Retina enabled 3rd party program so it scales the image down which causes it to blow up the img and distort/pixelate.
I'm assuming there is a simple common sense fix for this which  Iam obviously unaware of...?

False alarm, took memory stick back to store and fault is same on shops mbp-r.  They swapped it for a new one and now everything is fine.  Sorry apple, how could I have doubted you!!

  • Are the new MBP retina haswell all Samsung screens?

I heard that the MBP haswell retinas now all have Samsung screens as opposed to some Samsung and some LG. Does anyone know if this is true?

Apple generally doesn't make the screen model's known.  If you don't like your display upon purchase, and going to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Display -> Color and System Preferences -> Universal Access doesn't make it more legible or usable for you, you can always bring it in for return/replacement within the first 14 days, and warranty issues up to one year without purchasing AppleCare for hardware related issues.  90 days for purely Apple software related issues.  I recommend getting AppleCare anyway.

  • Glossy vs Hi-Res Glossy vs Hi-Res Antiglare vs Retina Display

Which one of these display screens is better for a designer who needs to use the MBP for long periods of time, creating presentations on Photoshop and Microsoft Office PowerPoint?  Which one is kinder to the eyes?
    Glossy Widescreen Display
    Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
    Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
    Retina display

  • MBP(Leopard) has ALL music (Amazon, my own CDs,etc) in iTunes. I do NOT want to use in new MBP(Yosemite). Now, iPodTouch64 is now stuck at "plug in to iTunes" screen. Can I plug it in to my old MBP without fear of losing ALL?

My iPod64Touch is frozen at that screen, with no way to get to settings. I have even pressed the top (on/off) button and the button at the bottom (front) at the same time, and it just returns to the frozen screen. Let it drain, recharged, and get the same screen. I'm sure this is Apple's way of forcing me to send all my 6674 items to my new MBP(Yosemite), and know it will not include my Amazon purchases and personal CDs that are on the old MBP.  I don't use videos, photos, or anything other than music on the iPods.
ITunes on the old computer, under Devices>Device backups, shows:
    iPodTouch 64 ------------------------------------12/24/14 9:33pm
    iPodTouch 64 - Feb 14, 2015 7:07pm ----12/24/14 9:33pm
I use this device in the cars only, and have played it many times until last week, when I got the frozen screen after disconnecting from my husband's car. The CAR couldn't have tried an update, right? I forgot about Sync, didn't I? I've now checked the box to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically". Why didn't I see that before now? It's possible that the update was so large, that the iPodTouch wouldn't take it and just quit, without completing the update, but left me this unresponsive screen.
So can I safely just plug the USB from the iPod64 into the older 2008 MBP and update it from there (WITHOUT DANGER OF LOSING ENTIRE COLLECTION)? Make it simple; I'm 74 and not as savvy as I used to be! I tend to zone out with long descriptions, but if you have to....fire away...between hubby and me, we can usually figure it out.
I haven't migrated from older to newer MBP or to iPad4 yet because I wanted to be selective in doing so. I am offloading all my photos, digital art, documents and important Applications onto separate thumb drives, before upgrading the old MBP, and will probably backup the whole thing on a new external backup drive, too. Then, will upgrade to Snow Leopard (the last update the 2008 MBP will take), and use it almost exclusively offline.
I have a 'Classic iPod' that I purposely haven't updated since the last of '14. All purchases from all sources are on there (as on the '08MBP) and I want to keep it that way. We keep it in players and do not plan to update it or play anywhere else, except perhaps with headphones or through the tuner occasionally. I'm assuming it is safe from the same fate?

  • Choosing new MBP purchase based on screen

My 2 year old 15" MBP bit the dust - it appears to be the GPU, but Apple can't confirm it, so they won't do a logicboard replacement. That makes it a write-off in my book; paying £750 for a 90 warranty on something that could fail again isn't something I'll do, especially when new MBPs can be found with a 12 month warranty for not too much more - plus the battery is dead, and the hard drive sounded like it was on the way out.
    Being full-time in web development/startups, I'm anti-glare only, which almost makes a new MBP buying decision easy. However, I've been wondering;
    1. Will Apple launch an anti-glare 15" soon? I'm not 100% sold on having 1920x1200 in a 17" screen. I'm used to it on my 24" Dell, but not on a laptop size screen.
    2. Will a 15" 1650x1080 anti-glare screen ever exist? That would be perfect for me - I would rather hold out for that than buy a 17" anti-glare, but that isn't really an option as I use my Mac all hours of the day for work. This week without my MBP has to be factored in as a holiday.
    3. Could I get a 15" with gloss and buy something like this;
http://www.photodon.com/MBP3-450x339.jpg or will that give unsatisfactory results?

    Hi, N.Cauldwell.
    1. Will Apple launch an anti-glare 15" soon?
    2. Will a 15" 1650x1080 anti-glare screen ever exist?
No one here knows the answer to either of these questions.
    3. Could I get a 15" with gloss and buy something like this;
    http://www.photodon.com/MBP3-450x339.jpg
Sure you could. $40 might not be too much for you to pay to find out whether or not you could get it applied satisfactorily (a real chore with any film) and live with the fuzzy image it would give you. The distance between the LCD and the antiglare film (at least the thickness of the glass, and I'm not sure whether there's also a narrow airspace between the LCD and the glass) is likely to appear to be filled with a pea-soup fog. But you won't know what it looks like until you try it.
You write, "Being full-time in web development/startups, I'm anti-glare only", as though the two things were clearly related. They aren't. Lots of people do web development on glossy displays. Have you tried one to see how you like it?

  • Is the fact that the new MBP with Retina display, has choppy scrolling in safari, a reason not to buy it? Can it be fixed through software?

I am debating buying a new MBP with Retina or a Macbook Air. I am looking for more info on wat people have been saying about lag in safari. Thanks!

Hey fredryan..did you end up getting the rMBP?  I too am a little concerned about the screen performance while I wait for mine to ship.  If you have gotten yours do you mind commenting on how Mountain Lion affected it?  Is the lag still a big issue?  Thanks!

  • New MBP-Retina (Indexing Question)

    Hello.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro - Retina yesterday.
I am having difficulty transferring files from old MBP using Migration Assistant.
The old MBP display screen has failed, so I am unable to see screen promots / menus to go through the normal Migration Assistant process.
Instead, I am just hoping that the Transfer is occuring.
It appears that new MBP-Retina is (and has ben) INDEXING overnight.
Can anyone explain if INDEXING indicates that I have indeed started the file transfer from old MBP to new MBP-Retina?
Any ideas on how to start and/or confirm Transfer of data?
    Thanks!

  • New MBP Retina Audio out

Tech Specs state, "support for audio line out"; meaning no optical out on the new Retina?  As in some sort of adapter may come out for it?  This is a rather huge selling point for me, between new Retina and going hi-res antiglare 15" with optical out.
    Thanks!!

Now this is interesting.  I just had the following reply from Apple's support chat:
    Just another minute.
We don't offer an optical port,
because today's technology would do that wirelessly.
No need to downgrade the sound with cables.
I have however found a future solution for me as I just discovered the AirPort Express base station offers the good 'ol audio minijack with both analog/optical outputs.  From what friends have told me in the past, the support staff receives their detailed information on new products day of release, so perhaps there is still some confusion on their end over whether or not the headphone minijack is both analog/digital.  Looks like i'll just have to purchase the Retina and report back

  • My MBP display is not working.  Need to move data to new MBP Retina.

    Hello.
My 3 yr old MBP display failed (display just showing vertical and horizontal lines).
I bought a new MBP Retina today.
Genius Bar told me to simply attach FireWire, then press "T" on old MBP to boot in Target Mode.
Then, look for old MBP HD icon on new MBP Retina desktop.
I cannot find old MBP icon on desktop.
I cannot transfer data from old MBP to new MBP Retina.
    Any help would be appreciated?
    Ken

Genius bar told you right - you need to start your old MBP up into target mode (booting while hold down the T key) but you need to have the right FireWire cable hooked up to the machines before you boot either. What year is your old model? Does it hve FW400 or FW800?
Here are the instructions from Apple - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661. Take a look at it and see if it helps. Also make sure that you have the Finder set so that external and remote disks will show up on your Desktop. When the disk mounts you can either just copy over files or, if you want to transfer accounts and associated directories, use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder to copy over the info.
Good luck - call back if it's not working.

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.
