Retire MSPAINT.EXE

// Already reported via the official feedback tool //
Please retire the old mspaint.exe application.  In 2014, this simple image application is just useless and is barely useful as a image viewer.
Replace it with something that has capabilities similar to Paint.Net (http://www.getpaint.net/).

The whole purpose here is to make Windows better, right?  Of course there are plenty of other free options.
Personally, I use Photoshop.  On systems where I cannot use PS due to licensing, I use Paint.NET.
Yes, MSPAINT is free, light and unobtrusive.  The goal, however, is to make Windows—and all of its included applications—better.
A good example is what Microsoft did with the built-in calculator program.
The version that shipped with XP and Vista had the most basic of usefulness with only a “scientific” mode.
Starting with Windows 7, Microsoft dramatically enhanced the application to where it now includes a “programmer” and “Statistics” mode.
Also added is a history view, unit conversions, and useful worksheets.
Why can’t the same be done for MSPAINT?
Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying remove MSPAINT entirely.
I’m just suggesting it’s time to make it better and more useful.
Keep the name.  Just give the application some enhanced capabilities.

  • How can I get rid of ms Paint in windows 7?

    None of the topics dealt with my question.  I need to competely get rid of mspaint in windows 7 64bit.  There has to be some way to do it! I just can'seem to find the way!

    Since I see no reason to remove MSPaint I will at least tell you how to disable it, that way it can always be re-enabled in the future if need be.
    I am assuming your using 64bit I'm going to assume your using at the very minimum Windows 7 Professional, while there does not seem to be a way to remove it without using a third party application it is possible to use Applocker policy to make it completely
    none functional.
    1. Open your start menu and type Local Policy in the search it should show the
    Local Security Policy editor, select it.
    2. In there open Application Control Policies (near bottom of list) under this you will
    find Applocker, double click it.
    3. Next double click Executable Rules so you see the right panel show blank space.
    4. Now right click Executable Rules and select create new rule, this will pop a wizard up for you to use.
    5. On the permissions page select "deny" Everyone, click next.
    6. On the Conditions page select Publisher, click next.
    7. In the browse window go here ----> C:\Windows\System32\mspaint.exe, now move the slider up to
    File Name. Once you've done that click Create at the bottom of the window.
    8. Now that you have created the rule, over on the left (back in the menu)
    click on Applocker again, on the right in the center box click Configure rule enforcement this will pop a small window. Place a check in configured under Executable Rules, make sure the dropdown box says Enforce Rules click OK.
    YOUR DONE!
    P.S. If your really adamant about removing it then just use step 7 to find the file and delete it, but the above mentioned steps WILL make sure it can not be used at all even by someone that knows where this executable it even though it is still in it's
    proper location.

  • Gray image not shown correctly in photo app

    Hi, in my iphone App, I create a Gray CGImage. Some code is here:
    colorSpace = CGColorSpaceCreateDeviceGray();
    if (colorSpace == NULL)
    fprintf(stderr, "Error allocating color space\n");
    return NULL;
    CGDataProviderRef dataProvider =
    CGDataProviderCreateWithData(NULL,
    myimagebuffer,
    bitmapByteCount,
    NULL);
    CGImageRef cgImage = CGImageCreate(col,
    row,
    8,
    8,
    col,
    colorSpace,
    kCGImageAlphaNone,
    dataProvider,
    NULL,
    false,
    kCGRenderingIntentDefault);
    And then I use this CGImage to make a UIImage. This image shows OK in UIImageView. I also use UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum to save this gray scale image to photo album. But when I open iphone native Photo app, this image is not shown correctly.
    Anyone has the same experience?
    Thanks,

    Because I am sure other people will encounter this issue, I will post the solution here...The issue lies in what program is associated with .bmp files. In my specific case the customer had PhotoSuite 4 by Roxio associated with opening bmp files.  I am not sure exactly why (perhaps it doesn't support drag-and-drop?) but if you create a .reg file and import this it should fix the problem. • How do I make Photoshop the default Edit App for .jpg in Windows 7?

    How do I make Photoshop the default Edit App for .jpg in Windows 7?    I want to be able to right click on a .jpg file, select the EDIT option in the Context Menu, then have Photoshop edit the file instead of Paint.
    In Windows XP it was very easy to use the File Manger to associate the file type .jpg and action edit with Photoshop.    No so easy in Windows 7.  It is easy to change the default OPEN application, but I would like to leave Windows Viewer as the default OPEN application and have Photoshop as the EDIT applicaiton.

    Before I posted the original question here, I had probably spent a couple of hours trying to research it.   I hate to find no answer for something I know can be done.   So I spent some more time and found the following in the bowels of a Tech Forum that is generally way over my head.  I have modified it to be Photoshop specific.
    These instructions will update the default EDIT action for image types - jpg,png,gif and the variations.     If you are unfamiliar with editing the program registry you probably will want to back up your registry or take a system backup.
    1. Open up the registry editor (Regedit.exe).
    You will need to be signed on as a Windows user that is an administrator
    2. Find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> SystemFileAssociations -> image ->  shell -> edit -> command
    This seems like it would be easy but it is not, because there are many key names that are very close (like System.FilesAssociations).   Keep looking because you will find it eventually.
    3. Double click on "Default" (on right window pane) and update the program location.
    You should see that MSPAINT.EXE is the current program.
    Erase the existing value and enter you photoshop location in quotes followed by %1 in quotes.  For me this is "C:\Program Files  (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe" "%1"

  • Crystal Reports 10 and OLE Bitmap Objects

    Greetings, all!
    I need some help in getting a Bitmap Image file (BMP) to dynamically display on a Crystal form. We have it currently running as an OLE object inserted into the form. The actual image displayed can vary, so immediately prior to running the form, the desired image file is copied to a specific location with a specific name. This works great... until we implemented the solution on our client's system. That is our problem.
    Rather than than refreshing the BMP image at run time, the form displays the last image it was able to successfully load. When I open the form in Crystal Reports, it displays the "Updating ActiveX options" message along with the progress bar, but then puts up the message, "Some links could not be updated because their sources are presently unavailable." When I try to verify the file path and file name of the OLE object within Crystal, it says that the object is invalid.
    Here are some environment details.
    1. The version is "Crystal Reports 10 for Sage" (version 10.0.5.820). This is because the Crystal software is bundled with the accounting application software, Sage MAS 500 version 7.05.18.0.
    2. My operating system is Microsoft Windows 2000, 5.00.2195, Service Pack 4. The configuration runs great here.
    3. The client's operating system is Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, Service Pack 2. This is where it does not work.
    Here is what I have tried so far:
    1. I referenced the following forum thread...
    OLE Linked Object
    ... and tried updating the registry as it describes. This did not work.
    2. I referenced the following forum thread...
    Re: OLE object problem
    ...but I did not have a clear understanding of what it was explaining. I was uncertain about the reference of setting mspaint.exe as an OLE Automation server, etc.
    That's it. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. The client's software and operating system are pretty much fixed, so I'm afraid I won't be able to oblige any suggestings to upgrade these. If you need any additional information, I will be more than happy to provide it.
    Thanks in advance!

    This issue has been resolved. We found that when the customer ran the statement on a client workstation rather than on the server, the OLE bitmap objects refreshed as expected. I am therefore closing this issue.

  • How can I open a program using Java and then perform certain tasks with it?

    For example, and this is just an example, I want to write a Java program that opens MS Paint and then manipulates that program. This can be useful to automate certain tasks.
    My question is whether this can be done writing Java code and if so how? If not possible, would I need to use a scripting language instead?

    write a Java program that opens MS Paint and then
    manipulates that program. This can be useful to
    automate certain tasks."manipulates" is a too wide term. Let me narrow down:
    1. If you want to open (run) the program and then shut (kill) it down it is possible and fairly trivial to do in java. Look up Runtime and Process classes in java.lang package
    2. If you want to open the program and edit some image/document in the opened program. It is very difficult in java. May be possible... using some Java/COM bridge, assuming your native program is COM/Active-x compliant. Note: these things go beyond the boundary of JVM and needs to interact with host OS and involves shared memory, ipc and all "low level" stuffs.
    If you want to be able to play around with these COM/Activex apps- choose .NET instead :-)
    3) You can open the program from java and pass it some command line arg as in (1) above and then the program will load that document/image at startup automatically. You may then edit the doc/image thru that program itself. However, Java is not doing anything for you here, other than just starting off your native mspaint.exe ot notepad.exe.

  • New Bitmap missing from context menu after installing photoshop

    After installing photoshop CS6 from CD onto Windows 7x64; my context menu > New > bitmap is no longer available.  registry settings are intact and I've used Bridge ro reassociate .bmp with mspaint but the option still does not appear.  The installation of photoshop is the only change to the computer in several months.
    I can workaround by creating new txt files and changing the extension but this adds a step to a (non photoshop related) workflow that's been in place and worked well for years.

    I don't know why Photoshop would kill the system default entry for new bitmap - possibly because it has associated itself with that file type.
    First thing to look at - start Adobe Bridge CS6, go into the Edit - Preferences - File Type Associations dialog, and see if you can re-associate MSPAINT.EXE with the BMP format.  That may correct the issue, but I can't say for certain as I don't want to try it here and change my own setup.
    I don't use the New context menu functionality for making new bitmaps myself, but when I looked to see what shows up in my New context menu, I found this:
    Choosing the IrfanView BMP File entry led to this:
    If you can't recover the old functionality via the Bridge settings, it may be that you can install the freeware viewer IrfanView and have it associate itself with the BMP file type.
